Ep 24 - Taking Responsibility
10/24/2023
Ep 24 - Taking Responsibility
Choosing to blame others as the response to a situation, means that you are degrading yourself. You see, when we continuously blame others it can reinforce a negative self-image. It suggests that we view ourselves as a victim rather than someone who is in control of their life and who has the ability and power to make choices. Blaming others can serve as a way to avoid facing uncomfortable truths about ourselves and our actions. It can be a form of escapism that hinders personal development. So if you constantly hear yourself saying things like, "it's not my fault", then you may be suffering a lack of personal responsibility - also known as blaming others. By doing this you are distancing yourself from your problems, allowing yourself to play the victim and worst of all, keeping yourself stuck. Responsibility requires us to meet our obligations and fulfill our duties. At some point in our lives we all engage in blame, especially when faced with challenging situations. However, if blaming others becomes a chronic pattern in our behaviour and negatively impacts our life, then that needs to change, or we're destined to keep repeating the same mistakes, and giving away our power. Taking responsibility for our actions and choices is a powerful and crucial step towards personal growth and well-being. ------------- If you're ready to change your life, then check out my new course - where we take 28 days to work together and transform your mindset and your life. Ep 23 - Managing Your Mind
10/12/2023
Ep 23 - Managing Your Mind
If there's one thing I've learned in my life, it's that managing your thoughts is the ultimate game-changer for life, for business, for relationships… Seriously, it's like having the control panel of your mind right there in your hands. Because here's the truth: if you're not actively taking charge of your thoughts, then they are taking charge of you. And let me tell you, that's a slippery slope to feeling fed up, out of control and disconnected from the life that you truly desire. Picture this: every thought you entertain is like a seed you plant in the garden of your mind. And those thoughts? They determine what grows in your life. It's a simple equation: our thoughts shape our reality. They mould who you are, what you do, and what you can achieve, and they also control how you feel. So, in the words of Henry Ford: whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right. But here's the kicker: most of us let our thoughts run wild on autopilot, and guess what? The default setting tends to be negative. Trust me, I've been there - in my 20s, I had no clue about the power of managing my thoughts. It was like being caught in a whirlwind, with thoughts just happening to me, leaving me feeling lost and unfulfilled. Goals? I didn't even know what they were at that time. But let me tell you, all of that changed when I learnt about the tremendous power of managing your thoughts. Nowadays, my conscious mind is on a mission of optimism and productivity. I've got a toolbox full of affirmations, visualisations, and positive thoughts that I use every single day. It's not always smooth sailing, though. Random thoughts still pop into my head, and I'm sure you can relate. ------------- If you're ready to change your life, then check out my new course - where we take 28 days to work together and transform your mindset and your life. Ep 22 - The Discipline Identity
10/03/2023
Ep 22 - The Discipline Identity
Woody Allen said, "The only thing standing between greatness and me, is me." We all have excuses - in fact I am the queen of excuses. Didn’t go to the gym? I needed the lie in. Didn't do that networking event? I had to stay in and catch up on some programs. Ate too much? I was 'treating myself' (for the 6th day this week) Forget about motivation- there is only one thing that is going to get you to your goals and that’s discipline. Contrary to popular opinion: Discipline is in fact freedom. In the words of Jim Rohn “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments." The best version of you is the disciplined version of you, it’s the version that does the things you don’t feel like doing regardless of how you feel in the moment. Discipline doesn’t hit snooze, discipline is never too tired, discipline doesn’t skip workouts, discipline measures progress, discipline shows up, discipline keeps its commitments, discipline is persistent and unbeatable. When we hear the word 'discipline' it may conjure up images of soldiers and drill sergeants, many people mistakenly think that discipline is an unyielding force that crushes spontaneity or drains the joy out of life. But in reality, it's more like an empowering compass that guides us towards our aspirations. Discipline allows us to shape our days intentionally. It's not about rigidly adhering to a set of rules; rather, it's a tool that helps us make conscious choices that are aligned with our goals. ------------- If you're ready to change your life, then check out my new course - where we take 28 days to work together and transform your mindset and your life. Ep 21 - The Comfort Zone Fallacy
09/04/2023
Ep 21 - The Comfort Zone Fallacy
It's funny how we often wrap ourselves in the warm, cozy blanket of our comfort zones, believing that it's our safe haven. But what if I told you that what you perceive as a comfort zone is actually just a cunning mirage and doesn't really exist? What am I talking about? Well, I've been banging on about how we must get out of our 'comfort zones' for years. Yes, my friends, the so-called "comfort zone" is nothing more than an attachment to familiarity that's keeping us stuck. When I was 14 I went into the first year of my GCSEs - General Certificate of Secondary Education - these are 2 year courses in the UK that all school kids do between the ages of 14 and 16. You have to do mandatory subjects like English, Maths, Science, etc. I remember walking into my favourite Biology teachers class and she said something that blew my mind, she said: "I want you to forget everything we've taught you up until now, that was all a lie". WHAT? Our teachers had been lying? Not quite. Our teacher went on to explain that basically they had over simplified their teachings until now, and that we needed to forget all of that because they were going to give us the 'warts and all' version. ---------- If you're ready to change your life, then check out my new course - where we take 28 days to work together and transform your mindset and your life. Ep 19 - Failing to Win
It's great to get out of your comfort zone, but there are occasions when we get this feeling and this experience of discomfort, and we have no idea of the impact that it will have later in our lives. The first time I ever went abroad, was when I was 18 and it was just 4 hours from the UK and I was with 21 friends, but I felt hugely homesick. At that moment, I was adamant that I did not like going abroad. It turns out that I was wrong - I was so wrong in fact that I now live on the other side of the world. Feelings of discomfort can lead us to mistakenly think that we don't like something, when in fact, it is the start of a fantastic adventure! ---------- If you're ready to change your life, then check out my new course - where we take 28 days to work together and transform your mindset and your life. Ep 18 - Growth Mindset & Education
Today we are going to talk about learning, formal education, mindset and about how war shaped the world wide school system! When we are young we naturally do hard things: learning to walk, speaking in your mother tongue, and if you're in a developed country then almost 100% of us will be lucky enough to get a formal education by attending primary and secondary school to learn reading, writing, maths and science, etc, but as we get older we start to do less and less learning in a formal environment. After you learn to drive and you pass your test, or after you finish secondary school, then the percentage of people that stick with formal education of some sort and enrol in college or university drops to between 38% in the UK, to 50% and 61% in Australia and America respectively. The numbers for apprenticeships or trade courses are even less. So, why do we stop learning? And more importantly, why do we have teachers and educators for things like algebra, English literature and physical education, but we don't have people to teach us essential life skills? ______ If you're ready to change your life, then check out my new course - where we take 28 days to work together and transform your mindset and your life. I didn't consciously create change in my life until I was in my 30s. Don't get me wrong, I'd move jobs and cities, leave relationships, but all of this was done in silos, without any real strategy or game plan. So what changed? I did! I started reading books on personal development, listening to podcasts, attending seminars and hiring coaches of my own. I literally spent thousands of dollars on upskilling myself. Ep 14 - Agitating Discomfort in Your Life
Are you too comfortable? Of course, everyone wants to be comfortable emotionally, financially, physically there's nothing better than feeling safe and secure, however this can be a problem. I was recently listening to a podcast that had Alex Hormozi as a guest - if you don't know; Alex Hormozi is now a millionaire, but he is also someone that went from having it all: having a safe secure job at the age of 22 being able to afford a nice apartment having a great salary and then he threw it all in, and he quit his job and he went to open a gym on the other side of America where he lived and basically ended up working 20 hours a day and sleeping in his gym. Basically, he agitated discomfort in his life, and I did the same when I quit my safe, secure job and moved to the other side of the world. In this episode we talk about the benefits of agitating discomfort in your life to get outside of your comfort zone and take the opportunities that your gut knows are there. Ep 13 - Procrastination
The irony of the fact that I started writing this episode on procrastination in January 2020 (no I am not joking), and that I am only now getting round to publishing it, is not lost on me. I promise you, I did not do that on purpose, but now that I have done it - it's a GREAT example of procrastination. Procrastination is something that we all do, every single one of us, but why? Procrastination is a common struggle that many of us face in our daily lives. Whether it's putting off a task at work, delaying a project, or avoiding a difficult conversation, procrastination can have a significant impact on our productivity, well-being, and overall success. In this episode we talk about the fact that no one is actually a procrastinator, we just sometimes exhibit procrastination as a behaviour. Ep 12 - Weekends with Purpose
I'm betting that your weekdays are on point and are dialled in: you know exactly what you’re doing and when, you know what time you’re getting up what time you’re getting breakfast and it's the same for the rest of the family; you know what time you’re dropping the kids off and picking them up from school, at work you have all of your meetings scheduled, you have a to do list or a calendar with everything in one place - you are an organisation machine. But if you're like 99% of people then what happens at the weekend is that it all falls down: you don't have plans, or everything is left to chance, you were thinking of having a lie in and then you wake up and end up scrolling through your phone only to realise it's nearly lunchtime and you've achieved nothing. This used to be me - during the week I was on fire, I was super organised and I got A LOT of work done, but then come the weekend I would achieve nothing in terms of my personal goals. Don't get me wrong, I'd get the housework done and maybe some cooking, but outside of that I didn’t have a routine, I didn’t really have a purpose on weekends. This talks about how to plan and execute a weekend with purpose so that you achieve your goals. Karen Davies is a coach, engineer, podcaster and human being. Ep 11 - Getting Unstuck
Feeling stuck can be a frustrating and overwhelming experience, but with the right mindset and tools, you can break through those barriers and start moving forward towards your goals. So, what does it mean to feel stuck? It's that feeling of being trapped, like you're not making any progress in some, or all, areas your life, whether it's your career, your relationships, or your personal growth. It's important to recognise that feeling stuck is a normal part of the human experience. We all go through periods of stagnation and uncertainty, but the good news is that there are practical steps you can take to get unstuck and start living the life you want to live. The first step to getting unstuck is to identify where exactly it is that you feel stuck. Is it a particular relationship, maybe you're in a relationship is draining and not going anywhere, maybe you feel trapped due to financial or emotional dependence. Maybe you feel that you're stuck with some habits that you want to change; such as smoking, drinking, overeating, watching too much TV or not exercising. Another place people often feel stuck is with negative thoughts and beliefs: For example: maybe you (wrongly) think that you are not smart enough or not capable of success. Or maybe you (again, wrongly) believe that you're "too old" or "too young" or "not ready"… sound familiar? A common complaint of some of my coaching clients is Career dissatisfaction: they feel stuck in jobs that they don't enjoy or that don't align with their values, and sometimes they feel trapped due to financial or professional obligations. In this episode I talk about how I gave up alcohol which helped me to become unstuck in some areas of my life. Karen Davies is a coach, engineer, podcaster and human being. How do you view failure? What are your most cherished failures? In this episode I share with just some of my multiple failures in life, and how they turned out to be blessings in disguise, or at least have silver linings. Failed relationships, failed jobs, failed moves, failed hobbies, the list is endless. I talk about why failure isn't a sign to stop - it's a sign to keep going - to try something new, to find another way, to do something different. And I encourage you to look at your own 'failures' and see what good came of them. You would be surprised at what's there when you look. So what are you avoiding failing at right now? Ep 9 - Knowing When to Ask for Help
03/19/2023
Ep 9 - Knowing When to Ask for Help
From being 'self sufficient' and never asking for help, to falling from a step ladder and breaking my leg - this was the journey that taught me that asking for help can be a skill and a gift. This episode is packed full of stories. So if you, like me, are a recovering "I can do it myself" addict, then may I suggest that you give your friends and family the opportunity and the gift of helping you. Ask yourself, "where am I holding back? Where am I keeping people at arm's length with this approach?", because that's part of it too - when you don’t ask for help then you don't need to let people in. It took me a long time to realise that this was part of it, and even longer to accept it, but here we are. My life is now so much richer for learning this skill - and it is a skill - the skill of asking for help - it's not just a skill though, it's also a gift, and one that you should embrace. Knowing that, I now embrace it - but it also means learning the art of patience and tolerance - people won't always do things the way you want or the way you would have done them, but that's ok - it's just an opportunity to learn something new, something different. I really hope that this has given you some food for thought and that you are able to start asking for help - and when you do, take note of exactly how it impacts those around you - especially if it’s a new trait for you - you may be surprised by how happy people are to be given that opportunity. And you get bonus points if you can use the words, "I really need your help" or "can you please help me?" - because that's the magic word. It turns from a chore to an opportunity and opportunity is all that is needed to make someone's day. Karen Davies is a coach, engineer, podcaster and human being. When I was younger, my mother said to me "jealousy is one of the most useless emotions, it serves no purpose" and for a long time I agreed with her. Jealousy is such a negative emotion, it is often thought of as an emotion that is associated with envy, possessiveness, and mistrust amongst other things. We are taught from an early age that jealousy is bad and that you shouldn't be jealous. However, what we are not taught, and what I have learnt is that jealousy is USEFUL. Ep 7 - Doubt Your Self Doubt
Many people think that self-doubt is just something that happens, that it's something that sneaks up on them. I used to think that too but then, after a lot of soul searching and some self-reflection I came to the realisation that Self-doubt is a choice, whether conscious or unconscious, it is a natural reaction to growth, it is, essentially the fear of growth. Your brain, your consciousness wants to stay in its comfort zone where it's all safe and it has certainty. Humans thrive on certainty. Our ability to grow is only limited by our own self-doubt If you want to grow whether that's in work, in relationships, in earnings, in certain skill sets - you need to be able to face those doubts and overcome them. If you're not doing something, it doesn't matter what reason you state, the real reason is because you are doubting yourself. Not enough money? Self-doubt. Not enough time? Self-doubt. Not sure you want to do it? SELF. DOUBT. For more information:

Ep 6 - Comfort Zones
Comfort zones are safe and reliable: you know exactly where the boundaries are, you feel assured and there are no challenges. If you like your comfort zone and you don't want to grow, you don't want to learn, you don't want to change, then this podcast episode is not for you. However: if you're ready for change, then keep listening. To change something, you have to leave one comfort zone to create a new one - paradoxical, yes, but also worth it. I talk about my experiences of getting out of my comfort zone: changing my life, making the decision not to be in debt anymore, not to be over weight, not to live pay cheque to pay cheque, I didn't want to be a music promoter any more, I wanted to move to the other side of the world and change my career, and my life. The first time I set foot on a construction site was when I was 30. I started my engineering degree when I was in my 30s, performing dance routines and sketches, all of this was outside of my comfort zone at one point and now it's firmly part of it.
