info_outlineFinancial freedom is often painted as the ultimate goal for entrepreneurs—but what happens when you actually reach it? In this episode, Robert and Kay Lee Fukui sit down with Mike and Carolyn Neubauer to unpack the real story behind building wealth together as a married couple. From humble beginnings—him as a firefighter and her as a stay-at-home mom—they share how they transitioned from trading time for money to creating a life centered on freedom, flexibility, and family. But their journey wasn’t smooth. Their first real estate investment nearly strained both their marriage and sanity, forcing them to confront misaligned expectations, communication gaps, and the true cost of “success.”
What makes this conversation powerful is how quickly it moves beyond tactics and into what actually matters. The Neubauers reveal that financial freedom isn’t about hitting a number—it’s about aligning your life with your values. Through trial and error, they learned how to define a shared vision, stay in their respective strengths, and build systems that supported both their business and their marriage. Instead of chasing scale at all costs, they chose intentional growth, prioritizing time, peace, and relationships over maximum profit.
For married entrepreneurs, this episode is both a wake-up call and a roadmap. You’ll hear why chasing more money can quietly sabotage your home life, how to avoid common investment mistakes, and why true freedom is measured in choices—not dollars. If you’ve ever felt torn between growing your business and being present at home, this conversation will help you rethink what winning actually looks like.

Mike and Caroline Neubauer
Mike and Caroline Neubauer went from broke, exhausted, and trading time for just enough to get by… to financially free, working on only things that light them up, and raising their son while investing across multiple markets. They didn’t do it with a trust fund or a tech exit. Mike was a full-time firefighter on Maui. Caroline was a stay-at-home mom.
Their first move into real estate investing was a leap of faith, a spreadsheet, and a whole lot of YouTube. But once they went all in, that one deal kicked off a five-year sprint to financial freedom. Today, their portfolio spans short-term, mid-term, and long-term rentals, private lending, and passive investments across multiple states. They built a life that protects their peace, gives them time with their son, and still pays them while they travel.
Together, they host The Our Family Invests Podcast, where they interview entrepreneurial couples who are building wealth without losing their minds or their marriages. They talk about strategy, alignment, and how to grow a business that actually serves your life.
They're not trying to be the biggest name in real estate. They're focused on living intentionally, building a life that aligns with their personal compass while raising their son Nico with presence.
