When You Resist God Long Enough | Hosea 13:7-8

Our text today is Hosea 13:7-8

So I am to them like a lion;
    like a leopard I will lurk beside the way.
I will fall upon them like a bear robbed of her cubs;
    I will tear open their breast,
and there I will devour them like a lion,
    as a wild beast would rip them open. — Hosea 13:7-8

People love the idea of God being loving. Fewer people are comfortable with the idea of God opposing them. But that is because people misunderstand God’s love. It is not soft indifference.

God is holy. And when people persistently resist Him, reject Him, harden themselves against Him, and refuse every warning He gives, eventually they experience not only His kindness but His opposition.

In our text, God is pictured as:

Lion.
Leopard.
Bear.

These are not random animals. They are kings of the jungle. Hunters. Protectors. Violent. Protective. They describe the seriousness of what happens when people continue resisting the God who loves them.

And this is difficult for many modern believers because we have created a version of God that only affirms, comforts, and accommodates. But the God of Scripture also confronts, disciplines, restrains, and judges because He knows where rebellion ultimately leads.

A loving Father does not stand by while destruction consumes His children.

That is why this passage should not merely scare us. It should wake us up. And yet, even here, the warning itself is mercy. Because God is still speaking.

If He truly wanted to abandon His people completely, He would stop warning them altogether. But Hosea exists because God keeps confronting people He still wants to rescue.

And maybe that is what this moment is for you.

Maybe God has been pressing on something in your life for a long time: a compromise, an addiction, bitterness, pride, a relationship, a hidden sin, or an area of stubborn resistance. Do not keep hardening yourself. The longer the compromise is defended, the harder surrender becomes.

But hear this absolutely: God’s confrontation is not proof He hates you. It is proof that He still loves you enough to stop you from destroying yourself. So stop resisting Him. Respond while your heart is still soft enough to surrender.

DO THIS:

Stop defending one area of compromise or resistance today and honestly bring it before God.

ASK THIS:

1. What conviction have I been resisting repeatedly?
2. Where has my heart started growing numb?
3. Am I treating God’s warnings as mercy or annoyance?

PRAY THIS:

Father, do not let my heart grow hard toward you. Help me respond quickly to your conviction, surrender honestly, and trust that your correction comes from your love for me. Amen.
