Stop Wasting Your Pain | Hosea 13:12-13

Our text today is Hosea 13:12-13

The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up;
    his sin is kept in store.
The pangs of childbirth come for him,
    but he is an unwise son,
for at the right time he does not present himself
    at the opening of the womb. — Hosea 13:12-13

Pain can either change you or harden you.

God uses a great image here: childbirth. Israel was experiencing pain that was supposed to lead somewhere. New life. But instead of responding correctly, they resisted the process.

“He does not present himself at the opening of the womb.”

So now the image gets a little bizarre. In other words, the pain was trying to produce something new, but they refused to eject from the womb. Nice image, right?

But we all do this. When pain comes into our lives: conflict, failure, heartbreak, loss, disappointment, exhaustion, consequences, correction, suffering.

And our first instinct is almost always to try to escape the pain. But sometimes the better response is to consider a reflective question: “What is this trying to change in me?”

This is because pain has a way of exposing things that comfort never reveals. Pain exposes pride. Pain exposes idols. Pain exposes unhealthy dependence. Pain exposes false identities. Pain exposes where we have been pretending to be stronger than we really are.

And if we are willing to surrender during painful seasons, God often uses them to birth something new from us. New levels of humility, wisdom, dependence, courage, and spiritual maturity.

But I have watched as many people waste their pain. They stay bitter instead of becoming softer.
They become defensive instead of teachable. They get angry instead of surrendering. They grow numb instead of transforming. And eventually they repeat the same cycles because the pain changed nothing.

Do not waste what God may be trying to produce in you right now.

Instead of only asking God to remove the pain why not learn the lesson God wants to teach you through the pain?

Here are some practical ways to stop wasting your painful seasons:

Stop numbing yourself with endless distraction.
Stop blaming everyone else immediately.
Stop pretending you are unaffected.
Talk honestly with God about what hurts.
Invite trusted believers into your struggle.
Ask what patterns, sins, fears, or idols are being exposed.
Stay teachable instead of defensive.
Let suffering deepen your dependence on God rather than push you away from Him.

Faithful believers have always learned that God often does His deepest work in painful seasons—not comfortable ones. So stop wasting your pain. Let it birth something better in you.

DO THIS:

Write down one painful situation you are facing right now and ask God specifically what He may be trying to teach, expose, or change through it.

ASK THIS:

1. How have I been responding to pain lately?
2. Am I becoming softer or harder through suffering?
3. What might God be trying to produce in me right now?

PRAY THIS:

Father, help me stop wasting painful seasons. Teach me through suffering, soften my heart through difficulty, and use every hardship to draw me closer to you instead of farther away. Amen.
