The Notes from the Podcast

I did a biblical studies session on the Last Supper through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is podcast episodes 288 through 295, eight episodes. I read every record chronologically from all four Gospels of every event from The Last Supper through the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

To help the listener follow along, I have arranged the Scriptures in chronological order, reading from one gospel to another in each event one at a time. The Syllabus for each episode is in the Show Notes with the Podcast. The teaching can be found on the podcast and on my website, stevejaynes.com.

Jesus had two triumphant entrances into Jerusalem, where everyone loved him. He had just healed Lazarus, who had been dead for four days. Everybody in Jerusalem heard about it. The people loved him and started to follow him.

The scribes and chief priests wanted to have him destroyed, saying, “It would be better for one man to die than that we lose our place in Jerusalem.” Jesus Christ became Public Enemy Number One.

John 13:1 “Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.

How would anyone act if they knew that this was going to happen next? Think about an outlaw who knew his time was up.

We see that this was not the Passover meal. The Passover had many stipulations, like the Passover Lamb having to be a male of the first year, the Passover meal being eaten standing up, and the Passover lamb being slain outside the city's gates. You can read about other stipulations in The Book of Exodus. Not to mention that Jesus Christ was our Passover Lamb a few days later.

Mark 14:17 And in the evening he [Jesus] cometh with the twelve.”

This is the start of the new day, Monday the thirteenth of Nisan, which started at sunset.

At the Last Supper, Jesus Christ installed the memorial of the Communion, which we still have today. This is a very simple figure of speech called a metaphor, which is stronger than a simile. A simile compares two things using the words 'like’ or 'as.' A metaphor uses the word 'is,' which can be replaced by the phrase 'represents.' 'This bread represents my body,' etc.

The Passover was a memorial also to help Israel to remember what God did in getting Israel out of Egypt. They were to remember it yearly with many stipulations and things to do. We have many memorials to help us not forget, pictures, like statues, and other things to help us remember events in our country. The Communion is a memorial to help us remember. It starts with Jesus Christ at a common eating and drinking a meal commonly found at a dinner table, just like it is with us. Every meal commonly has bread and something to drink.

Luke 22:14-16 “And when the hour [the hour supper was to begin] was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.15And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer: 16For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”

Luke 22:17,18 “And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves: 18For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.”

Matthew 26:26-29 “And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. 27And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; 28For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 29But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom”

1Corinthians 11:23-30 “For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: 24And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.[for healing] 25After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament [covenant] in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. 26For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come. 27Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup. 29For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation [judgment] to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. 30For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep”

1 Peter 2:24 “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”

The two things that we are to remember are our sins have been forgiven once and for all. No matter what we've done in the past, it's over, forgotten, our sins are forgiven. Two, by his stripes, we are healed. It's available; complete healing that's what Jesus Christ came to make available, and it is still available

John 13:2 & 3 “And supper being ended [the text reads “taking place“ or “beginning to take place“], the devil [“Satan” in Aramaic] having now [already] put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him; 3Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;”Here's the thing to see and understand: Satan, the devil, can put thoughts into people's hearts. We are to guard our hearts, watch over our hearts, and make sure that what's in our hearts is Godly and not devilish.

John 13:20 & 21 “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. 21When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.”

John 13:22-30“Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake. 23Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake. 25He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? 26Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. 27And after the sop Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. 28Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him. 29For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor. 30He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night.”

John 13:31-36 “Therefore, when [or 'after'] he [Judas] was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him. 33Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. 34A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

[These men, Apostles, and disciples lived in a very unique period of time. They lived through three different Administrations, The Law Administration, The Christ Administration, and the new one that we now live in, The Age of Grace Administration or The Administration of the Mystery]

Look at how Jesus interacts with his disciples. They ask Him questions, and He answers them, like what we can do in small groups. Jesus continues teaching his disciples as they finish their time and walk through the Mount of Olives to the Garden of Gethsemane as they leave the location of the Last Supper. It is very inspiring to read the Last Supper through the resurrection of Jesus Christ in chronological order, one event at a time.

May God Bless Abundantly
