What we’re Enjoying
Jay has been diving into The Anatomy of Genres by John Truby, a deep exploration of storytelling structure that breaks down what makes different genres tick. He’s been enjoying how it analyzes narrative “beats” and provides insight into crafting compelling stories across multiple genres. Shua has been getting creative with sculpting, using leftover clay to craft a fun bobble-head of a school mascot. He also created a Mother’s Day gift by sculpting figures of his two dogs.
Sci-Fi Saturdays -
This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay spotlights Ready Player One (2018), a visually exciting adaptation of Ernest Cline’s novel. While it differs from the book, the film still delivers a fun and accessible dive into a pop culture-filled dystopia, making it a worthwhile watch for both fans and newcomers. Read his article on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. This week he’s added some new locations from Daredevil: Born Again season 2. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU.
Enjoy the Loin Cloth!
Step into a misty realm of magic, monsters, and muscles as Shua and Jay return to the age of sword and sorcery films. Inspired by the success of early fantasy hits, the 1980s unleashed a wave of low-budget adventures filled with epic quests, dramatic villains, and plenty of unintentional comedy. We explore what made these films so memorable, even when they weren’t exactly “good.”
Along the way, they discuss a variety of films that defined (or tried to define) the genre, from cult classics to bizarre oddities. And Jay plays a fun game that challenges him to distinguish between barbarian names and heavy metal bands.
