Episode Overview
Artificial intelligence is raising familiar questions about whether technology will eliminate jobs or reduce the value of human work. Steve uses the transition from e-commerce to smartphones and modern digital systems to illustrate how technologies that once seemed novel can become an ordinary part of daily life.
He then shares the story of a clinical laboratory that needed to process thousands of samples while facing a growing shortage of qualified medical technicians. Although the laboratory invested in automation, the technicians understandably worried that the project could eventually replace them.
By asking the technicians which parts of their work mattered most to them, the project team reframed automation as a way to reduce paperwork, calculations, sample tracking, and other repetitive tasks. This allowed the technicians to spend more time analyzing difficult cases, applying their expertise, and remembering the patients, doctors, and families waiting for answers. The episode concludes with a discussion of how AI can elevate uniquely human capabilities rather than diminish them.
