The Main Thing Podcast
The Neighbor I Thought I Knew For twenty years, Irv lived directly across the street from Skip. They weren’t strangers. They had shared meals. Shoveled snow. Looked out for each other during power outages. By any reasonable definition, they were good neighbors. Skip thought he knew Irv. Then, one late-summer weekend, a simple request for a fair gave him a reason to cross the street. In this short Skip’s Quips wisdom story, Skip recounts what happened when he agreed to check on Irv while the rest of the family was away. What was supposed to be a quick visit turned into a long conversation,...

As President of Concord University, she now helps prepare a new generation of students while preserving the close-knit community that makes Concord distinctive. Welcome back to The Main Thing Podcast! The Teachers We Never Chose Sometimes our greatest teachers don’t stand at the front of a classroom. They arrive disguised as hardship, disappointment, illness, financial pressure, failure or seasons we never would have chosen. When fellow podcaster Rick Barron accepted my invitation to join me on The Main Thing, I expected to hear great stories from his remarkable 42-year career in Silicon Valley. What I didn’t expect was to come away thinking about failure, gratitude, resilience and the unexpected teachers that shape a life. Rick’s journey...

Ep. 145 – Skip’s Quips: Who Do We Stop For? There’s a strange thing that happens to us when we drive. Over time, certain people begin to fade into the scenery—not because we are cruel, but because the human brain is constantly filtering what deserves our attention and what can safely blur into the background. In this short “Skip’s Quips” episode, Skip reflects on a cold spring morning in Appalachia, a man named Jim sitting near an interstate exit, and an unexpected encounter involving two stray dogs on a grassy hillside. Along the way, this essay explores attention, habituation,...

A Wisdom Conversation with Amie Breedlove
There’s a pretty good chance you’ve already heard Amie Breedlove’s voice.
If you’ve used the self-checkout at Target, that’s Amie reminding you not to forget your receipt. Before voiceover became her full-time career, she spent years in radio in West Virginia and Alaska. Her work today spans commercials, corporate projects, e-learning, video games, character voices and voice coaching. But this conversation goes well beyond the microphone.
Amie and I explore the wisdom of voice, attention and health—what it means to notice what your body is telling you, to make room for stillness, and to appreciate the ordinary things that are easy to overlook when life moves too fast.
Her stories range from a childhood cassette recorder and a career in broadcasting to tai chi, nature, family loss and a health journey that changed the way she experiences everyday life.
Why This Episode Matters
Sometimes the things worth hearing aren’t the loudest things. Amie’s story invites us to pay closer attention—to our surroundings, to the people we love, and to the signals coming from within.
Her health experiences have even changed the language she uses around ordinary chores. Instead of “I have to,” she increasingly thinks, “I get to.” Grocery shopping. Cooking dinner. Even cleaning the toilet becomes evidence that today she is able to participate fully in life. That shift stayed with me.
A Memorable Quote
“It’s so funny because I didn’t really think about it. I just kind of moved through life.”
