Anxiety: Things NOT to say | Anxiety Chats S02E68
When people discover I’m an anxious person, they usually try to help with suggestions – and that’s so sweet. I really appreciate people trying to help me with anxiety. But some people end up saying things they shouldn't, maybe because they've never dealt with an anxiety disorder or because they don't really want to understand what it's like. This led me to difficult situations that I want to share with you. They are (unfortunately) sooo relatable… Things not to say to an anxious person? I’d love to hear your thoughts. People assume that anxious people can't record themselves due to being socially judged. Yes, maybe social anxiety prevents some of us from doing this – but not everyone struggles with fear of recording! Starting to record my routine and sharing my anxiety journey has been amazing for me. Test anxiety is AWFUL! | Anxiety Chats S02E64
I had a really tough time with high school exams. My mental health was quite bad when I was at school with the anxiety and agoraphobia and my time seemed to be focused on keeping stable rather than exams and test anxiety. I remember crying at school from anxiety, feeling overwhelmed and freaking out. But all I got was scolded for "making it harder on the other students”. "I remember walking up to the school door and crying, like hysterical crying." I know I had the potential to be an "A" student with the right teaching methods. But the system never supported us – prioritizing my mental health was the best decision I’ve ever made. How do you cope with your test anxiety? I’d love to hear your thoughts! My breakup anxiety story | Anxiety Chats S02E61
I suffered from breakup anxiety in a long-term relationship, and it was so hard to walk away from, even though I felt it was the right thing to do. My first relationship started when I was about 16 and lasted 6 years. In the end, we just fell out of love — I convinced myself that I’d never find another person who could love me with my anxiety. When we finally broke up, what really happened was: yes, breakup anxiety hit me hard, but I had to relearn how to be single. I also met my current boyfriend some months later, who I’ve been dating now for 4 years. 🧡 This breakup was so important to help me heal and realize who I am as an individual and how valuable I am as a partner too. I understood I deserved to be happy and feel loved being single or dating. Self-love is everything!!! Have you ever felt breakup anxiety? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Giving birth is one of the most unforgettable and beautiful experiences! And although motherhood is amazing, it’s difficult and often overwhelming. So let’s talk about postpartum anxiety! I am joined by Jessica, a lovely first-time mom, who is struggling with depression and anxiety after having her baby. Jessica and I had a super honest chat about the pressure of taking care of a brand-new tiny human and how hard it is to distinguish being a mom from being an individual because of the judgment that comes with motherhood. Far more women experience postpartum anxiety and depression than we even realize, so I think it’s a super important topic to discuss, and that new moms feel validated and embraced! 🧡 I know this is a sensitive topic for many moms, but I’d love to hear your thoughts about new mother struggles and postpartum anxiety. Overcoming anticipatory anxiety | Anxiety Chats S02E59
Are you feeling anxious about your anxiety? I call it “Anticipatory Anxiety” and I’m sharing my story about it today! I pick up my goddaughter from school each week and the amount of “what if’s” swirling around in my head beforehand, sometimes gets overwhelming to the point I don’t think I can do it. Like a lot of people, I’m constantly worried about the future. I’m worried about something that might happen rather than about “in the moment” feeling anxious – i.e., anticipatory anxiety. Even though I know anxiety is just in my mind, it’s hard to stop overthinking. But here's the good news: we can manage our anxious thoughts! It’s an ongoing process, but you can do it too. 😊🧡 If you have a story about a time you felt so anxious but it turned out not nearly as bad as you thought, I’d love to hear your thoughts about your anticipatory anxiety! What is it like to have a daughter with anxiety? | Anxiety Chats S2EP57
Get ready for an extra-special episode, my loves! Today, in honor of Father's Day, we are joined by my amazing dad, Dominic! He’s here to talk about what is like to have a daughter with anxiety (that's me!) and what parent support looks like for him. Interesting fact: this video was my first experience interviewing someone all by myself! I wanted to test how I would feel about it, so I called someone I trust and feel comfortable with. I couldn't have chosen better. 🧡 Well, anxiety has been a part of my life since I was 9 and I don’t know where I’d be now if weren’t for my family’s unwavering support and unconditional love. In particular my dad, even a few episodes ago I shared the moment I realized I could count on him for everything. He's been there for me through the toughest moments, and it got me thinking: what was it like for him? How did he handle raising a daughter with anxiety and what thoughts went through his mind? “I didn’t know that could be that debilitating. I didn’t know anxiety could be all consuming. […] Your mum and me, we didn’t know how to deal with this.” One thing's for sure: he did an amazing job and I'm forever grateful to have him by my side. Not everyone is lucky enough to have such an incredible support system. After all, our parents are human, and they have their own ways of dealing with these situations. But I really really hope this video inspires other parents to see the incredible impact kindness and compassion can make in their children’s mental health journey. 🧡 Are your parents supportive? I know how tricky it can be having a son or daughter with anxiety! I’d really love to hear your thoughts. Please, leave them below. 👇 🌟 Join the Chat! One of the worst panic attacks of my life | Anxiety Chats S02E55
Today I'm opening up and sharing a deeply personal experience with you: the story of one of the most intense panic attacks episodes I've ever experienced. When I was about 19, my dad – who’s my anxiety rock – thought it was a great idea to go on a wee holiday, not too far away to a beautiful place up north Scotland. A lovely place where we could just chill out and relax for a couple of days – bless him! Oh boy, little did we know that I was about to have one of the biggest panic attacks ever… It turned out to be one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. From almost the moment we left until we finally got home – the same day we left, and through a snowstorm. Nothing I tried calmed me down and I truly felt like I could die. “Feeling physically horrific while also mentally battling all of these really really scary thoughts.” Looking back – although very scary, this trip is the reason I feel so safe with my dad and the moment he realized how serious anxiety can be. I’m definitely so lucky for having such an understanding and kind dad. “The silver lining was – I now know there is somebody that gets my specific anxiety and understands how hard it actually is.” But more than that – I want this story to serve as a gentle reminder that tough times come and go, and we always come out on the other side, stronger than before. It's all about pushing through and believing that we'll be okay. 🧡 If my story resonates with you? – Panic attacks are horrific! I love hearing your thoughts. Georgia-Leah shares her journey as an autistic girl | Anxiety Chats S02E54
Imagine: growing up, dealing with bullies, and constantly switching schools, all because of communication and social challenges. And then, one day, discovering that you're an amazing autistic girl! That’s the beginning of a story of resilience and bravery from the sweet Georgia-Leah, our dear guest in this episode. Georgia-Leah is an autistic girl who has experienced different anxiety disorders. She had really hard times in primary school even though she was trying hard. “I couldn’t speak in lessons, people used to ask me questions and I wouldn’t be able to speak”. The lack of support from the school made things even tougher, and she only found out about her diagnosis as an autistic girl when she was older, which made it even harder to adapt and cope. But like a lot of people with autism and anxiety, she found an escape in the arts – theater was her big passion! On stage, she felt safe and free to be her authentic self. In her 2020 journey working in the arts, she was invited by a teacher to join in a beautiful project dedicated to empowering and educating girls with autism and learning disabilities. Such important work! Having a heart-to-heart with Georgia-Leah and hearing about her journey as an autistic girl was beyond amazing. I hope her story resonates with many other girls and women, making them feel seen, validated, and inspired by this incredible warrior. 🧡 Maybe you’re an autistic girl or boy too? Now 23 years with anxiety holding them back, they finally muster up the courage to go on a walk by themselves – something they’ve never being able to do EVER! “My anxiety a year ago wouldn’t even let me leave the house or drive a car”. In this story their pride and happiness are absolutely contagious! To make it even better, I’m joined by the lovely Shawna DeJong to discuss this anonymous story. OCD Intrusive Thoughts: an open conversation with Krista | Anxiety Chats S02E51

Her dad made her have a panic attack | Anxiety Chats S2E50
Today’s anonymous story is from an absolutely brave and amazing 16 year old. They find extremely difficult to cope with sudden changes to their normal routine, this often leads to a massive panic attack. When you deal with severe anxiety, it’s normal to develop some habits or behaviors to feel safe, and for this person it was drinking ice cold water. So an ice machine was the perfect gift to receive, this meant they always had super cold water after they felt a panic attack coming on or just to feel calm. It’s already hard enough trying to cope with mental health issues, but even more so when not everyone close to you is supportive. This story describes what happened when a family member starts using the ice machine without asking and how it triggered an anxiety attack. Made worse by the fact this family member didn’t seem to care and wasn’t interested in understanding. This heartbreaking story is not really about the “ice machine” but more about how important understanding, compassion and love are when supporting sufferers of crippling anxiety and what happens when those needs are not met. I was so thrilled to be joined by the lovely Yeliena, a hypnotherapist who helps woman with anxiety. Yelena also offered some beautiful heartfelt thoughts for this person and also touches on the importance of healthy communication and the impact of personal filters. Like this person at 16 I was also struggling with my mental health and I really understand that real need to feel safe, to feel supported, and to be understood. I felt really honored to read this story and offer my thoughts too. Does your family support you when you have panic attacks or are misunderstood? What do they do? Please, leave your comments below. 👇 👇 👇 Join the Chat! Contact us through e-mail or our social media and share your story! Getting better from my OCD disorder | Anxiety Chats S02E49
Having a mental illness can be disabling, but I want to share my story to show you that you can get better from an OCD disorder. My obsessive thoughts are mainly focused around “getting sick” or “having panic attacks” and present if I don’t follow particular patterns. For example, even though I was 100% sure that stepping on a crack wouldn’t make me sick, my OCD led me to believe that it would. It may not seem logical, but it feels so so real! At times I felt like my OCD disorder gave me the feeling of being in control, control over my mental health especially when I was anxious. That’s why the healing process can be very tricky, so I really hope my journey inspires you to overcome your OCD disorder. 🧡 Have you ever had obsessive thoughts? I’d love to hear your OCD disorder experiences in the comments below! 👇 👇 👇 Join the Chat! Contact us through e-mail or our social media and share your story! Anxiety alternative coping methods | Anxiety Chats S02EP47
What an awesome and inspiring story! Thank you so much to the anonymous person who sent this story in. In this episode, we are reading a story about using alternative coping methods to overcome anxiety. Although, this person struggles with depersonalization, derealization, ADHD and anxiety, they are always looking for alternative ways to feel more control over their own body and mind. And while looking for anxiety alternative coping methods, they discovered the “ice bath method” and share their journey so far. I know that finding grounding takes vulnerability, bravery and a lot of energy, so it is so inspiring to know that they decided to do something helpful for themselves by being proactive when it is hard to be. This week I’m joined by the amazing Dr. Traci Potterf, a PhD and functional medicine anxiety detective, to chat and share our thoughts, show our support and understanding to this person. Dr. Traci also talks about the body’s ability to heal. I’d love to hear any alternative coping methods that you’ve tried. Please, leave your comments below! 👇 👇 👇 Join the Chat! How therapy helped with my anxiety | Anxiety Chats S02E45
In this episode, my co-host Leila and I are reading an anonymous positive story about anxiety therapy. This anonymous author shares with us how with the help of a therapist, they were introduced to tools, in particular one called the “Anxiety Curve”, which helped them relieve their death anxiety. With their therapist’s follow-up and practice of self-validation of feelings, their panic attacks got easier and easier, until they realized that it's totally possible to have a great life being an anxious person! Leila and I also took the opportunity to chat about how death anxiety can be hard to deal with and the important role of the therapist during the healing process. Even with all the stigma about this type of treatment. Also, I know that experiences with therapy may not always be positive, so it was really nice to share with you a story of someone who really enjoyed it. 🧡 I’d really love to hear your opinions about therapy. Moving in with a partner having agoraphobia | Anxiety Chats S02E44
I had my first experience moving in with someone, which means that I moved out of the safest place in the world, my beloved tiny old flat. I went through a lot in that place and leaving it behind was hard because it made me feel comfortable and safe for so long. The whole process of moving was terrifying because of my agoraphobia. I was so nervous about being with another person all the time and about the possibility of feeling like I would have no place to go with my partner living with me. But since I took this step and I feel so privileged for living here today. I hope my story helps you to make a good decision if you’re feeling insecure or scared about moving in with someone. 🧡 Do you live with your family, partner or on your own? In this episode, we are reading the story of an anonymous follower who mustered up the courage to tell her family about her decision to start a new anxiety medication. Unfortunately, older generations may not be supportive about mental health issues, so she had to deal with her mom’s negative ideology around medicines. This story gave space to my co-host, Kezia, and I to chat about the importance of having familiar assistance, but also how sometimes we just need to do what we know is best for our mental health. Shawna shares her story of health anxiety after misdiagnosis | Anxiety Chats S02E40
In this chat with Shawna, she told us the story of how a wrong diagnosis caused her health anxiety. After receiving some misdiagnoses of panic attacks instead of the actual illness, arrhythmia, she started to suffer from health anxiety. She was constantly worried about her health and the possibility of having another illness, which led her to deal with OCD as well. She shared with us ways that she found to better live with her anxiety after all that happened, including exposure therapy and changing some of the behaviors and thoughts that she didn't think were healthy. Since Shawna has been a nurse for 15 years, we also had a great conversation about her view on how the pandemic affected workers all over Canada, especially people in healthcare.
