40. Cultural appropriation in the yoga industry with Prageeth Jayathissa
Today I am joined by Prageeth Jayathissa, we unravel the tangled web of cultural appropriation woven through the modern yoga industry. From the colonial roots of yogic practices to the commodification of sacred symbols and the misrepresentation of feminine deities, we hold nothing back. We dive into how capitalism distorts ancient teachings, the unsettling rise of “light supremacy,” and why the chakra system you think you know might be more Jungian than yogic. How do we respect yogic roots, serve the community, and still keep the lights on? Join us as we dive into the heart of a powerful, uncomfortable conversation about honoring yoga’s essence, not just its aesthetics. Prageeth Jayathissa stems from Sri Lankan origins, but bred in Aotearoa. He fuses his teaching from his grandparents, with ancient scripture, and modern philosophy, to revive and reinvigorate a timeless tradition. He works in sustainability and climate change by day, and explores its integration with yoga by night. Prageeth wrote a flow chart book around this topic and we reference this as our guide throughout the podcast. This episode is not intended to point fingers or to conjure blame or shame, it is purely to bring light to parts of this practice that is asking for collective healing. This discussion is not asking you to stop engaging with yoga, it’s asking us to look at our blind spots, to continue our education within this realm and to honour this ancient tradition on and off the mat. What we cover: The colonisation story of the Indian subcontinent. Understanding the cultural history of yogic tradition Woman in yoga The chakra system we know today is based on Carl Jung’s work. The cultural appropriation of feminine deities. Please stop calling your sacred sexuality workshops “Tantra” Light supremacy Capitalism and yoga How can we be off service and still pay our rent? 26. Understanding The Fluid Field with Cranio-Sacral Therapy
Kia ora honeys, welcome to Āio. Grateful you are here. In todays epsiode we are exploring Cranio-Sacral therapy, a non-invasive form of medicine that focuses on the manipulation and balancing of the craniosacral system. It works on the nervous system, and if you are on any kind of healing journey you will know the impact of cultivating a calm working nervous system. I am joined today by Jaqs Clarke, a practicing cranio-sacral therapist with an introduction to the Fundamentals of Cranial Osteopathy through the Centre for Continuing Education Osteopathy in Canada. She is deeply attuned to brain health, because she believes that tuning the bio- rhythmic coherence in the cranio-structure is not only essential for overall health, but also for our spiritual evolution both individually and collectively. We unpack what the fluid field is, what ailments you might be experiencing to see a cranio-sacral therapist and how this work can affect your whole system, a true holistic practice. We explore how water systems in cities mirror the water systems inside of us, how galaxies are strange attractors and the importance of drinking good water. What we cover: What is CranioSacral Therapy Understanding the fluid field The body is like an ocean Draining your brain Brain health Holographic Breathing How Water systems in cities mirror the water system inside us. 19. Reindigenisation is the revolution! Learning Māori abroad with Amelia Butler
Moving our mindset to a more indigenous view will help heal this world. From education to agriculture, from mental health to being community led. The indigenous view communicates our oneness with nature, it highlights a holistic approach and awakens ancient medicine. Today I am speaking to Amelia Butler, an educator and lover of Māori culture and language. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree and Māori Land Law degree from the University of Auckland. She lives on Turtle Island (USA) and runs a business called Learn Māori Abroad, teaching Māori and non Māori about Māori culture, language, haka and poi. She is on a mission to educate about the term “reindigenisation” and feels it is a powerful word to reclaim our Māoritanga. How can we move away from centering the colonisor on our reclamation journey and instead feed ourselves with indigenous practices to develop a more indigenous mindset and way of living. Whether you are on your Te Reo Māori journey or curious about indigenous culture this episode is hugely educational, insightful and inspiring. 17. Education & Decolonisation
In today’s episode, we are talking about education and decolonisation. Two massive topics. Let’s dive in. We talk about creating a pepeha as a pakeha person in Aotearoa and the unique experience of being pakeha that attended a full immersion Māori school. On the podcast, today is Kiridwen (Kiri) Olds. She passionate about education, social justice and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Kiri graduated from Victoria University in 2015 with a BA in Environmental Studies, Te Reo Māori and Māori Studies, and received her Masters of Teaching and Learning with Distinction from AUT in 2021. Her passion for education stems from a belief that our tamariki are powerful motivators for change, individually, within whānau, and across communities. She believes that it is important, now more than ever, for our tamariki to grow up with a strong connection, understanding and respect for Papatūānuku and a belief that what they do makes a difference. She has been involved in many community organisations including as co-director of The Brothers & Sisters Collective (a creative collective that works across community, arts, and education). We discuss a fascinating philosophy called ‘The Pikler Theory’ that surrounds infants and children, and the need for change in our educational system. Kiri co-facilitates courses about the Te Tiriti of Waitangi and discusses her position as a tangata o te Tiriti and how that plays into her obligation to educate on Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Kiri is one of my closest friends, I am honoured to bring this conversation to you. What we cover: Creating a pepeha as a Pakeha person in Aotearoa Children's rights The education system in Aotearoa The Pikler Theory and how it can support infants and toddlers Language with our kids Consent with children Culture needs to match biology Emotional Literacy in schools The Treaty of Waitangi - Kiri’s unique position of being a Tangata o Te Tiriti & educating on the nuances of this agreement -Tangata o Te Tiriti (people of the Treaty), where do you belong?
