Women Who Lead is a podcast dedicated to women who make a difference in the real estate industry. Join us as host Teresa Smith, the Chief Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Officer at HomeServices of America, interviews various female executives and business leaders who have found success and forged their own path in the world of real estate. With a family from Colombia, Teresa conducts each interview with a cup of coffee in hand (because that’s how she bonds and spends time with others.) In today’s episode, I chat with three leading ladies: Jessica Cook, Lina King, and Susie Wright, on how they’re developing connections to help simplify the home buying process for everyone. Lina King, Manager, myNHD, Susie Wright, Senior Vice President, Business Operations, NAF Homes America, Adapting to Industry Changes to Better Serve Clients Lina highlights how wildfires have been a major problem for her clients. To help them out, she found a tool that her agents can use to provide fire and flood zone information. This is to help her agents better serve their clients during the home buying process, so they don’t have a surprise after everything is done. Susie discusses how her industry is facing a settlement change, and to help serve her clients, she started educating herself on these recent changes. Then, once she learned about the changes, she began educating her loan officers and leadership teams to prepare them better to provide clients with information. She also states how, even though challenges are scary, when you take the time to educate yourself about them, you’ll learn how to embrace them. Jessica explains when it might be time to make changes in the organization to help adapt to industry changes and serve clients better. If one person wants to stay in a specific spot, it may keep a company from growing. Innovation With AI Technology Jessica highlights how the Home Team Inspection Service implements AI tools to enhance its inspection process. This is to help increase efficiency and expedite obtaining necessary information, allowing inspectors to verify data more quickly and accurately. For agents, they have developed an AI app to serve clients better with booking and customer support. Expanding on the theme of AI, Susie also shares its potential to create internal efficiencies and improve processes. Offering a cautionary perspective, Lina advises that when it comes to checking properties for flooding or fire zones, it’s best to ask the professionals and not AI. She knows how AI technology can help with some tasks; however, you can’t always rely on it to give you updated and correct information. Meet The Leaders Jaynie Atanasoff, Vice President, Shared Success Center, HomeServices of America, Jan Hayse, President, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Beach Properties of Florida, Katie Stephans, Vice President, Enterprise Applications, HomeServices of America, Becoming Real Estate Leaders Katie joined the real estate world during one of the worst years, which was in 2008. But thanks to her technology background, she was able to bring fresh ideas into the industry to help businesses grow during that time. Jaynie comes from an HR background, which helped her transition into the real estate industry effectively with a customer service mindset. Also, realizing how important feedback is during change helped her excel in her transition into her new role. Jan joined the real estate industry in 2011 after leaving the banking industry and wanting a professional career that would work around her kids’ schedule at that time. Always up for a challenge and networking with others, she was able to get outside her comfort zone to become a real estate agent. Embracing Adversity Jaynie shares her experience of when her mother developed dementia and how it helped her embrace a new perspective of change. Things happened unexpectedly, and there’s nothing you can do about it besides adapting and keeping going. Reflecting on this experience allowed her to learn how to handle tough situations professionally and get through them. Katie shares another personal experience of her struggles with infertility. You expect it would be easy to enter motherhood, but for her, it was a ten-year struggle. This showed her you always have to put one foot forward and never give up, no matter how challenging the situation is. Embracing AI technology has not always been easy for Jan, and it was even harder having to help train her team. However, by surrounding herself with other leaders, she was able to embrace the change and help her team out. Creating Space for Life One of the hardest challenges every woman faces, no matter what industry they’re in, is balancing work and personal life, especially when working from home. If you’re a Type A person, like Katie, she shares how important it is to have boundaries when it comes to spending time with family and friends. Jan shares why a morning routine can help create that “me time” that every woman needs before starting her day. It helps put you in the right mindset to tackle the work tasks at hand. Jaynie likes to be mindful of what is going on at the moment. Also, when work is done, she completely turns the computer off to enjoy fun activities like golf, being with friends, and bowling. Don’t focus on just the numbers; engage meaningfully with your audience. Now, she works with everyone, from new agents learning the basics to experienced agents navigating negotiations of luxury properties. Beth started her career right out of college. She loved it immediately and stuck with it, despite starting as an agent in 2007! Debbie’s sister was in real estate and Debbie joined her. Debbie was a part of an early team before there were many other teams! Debbie no longer sells, she works more directly managing agents. Guiding Teams Through Difficult Times Debbie: Challenging times bring opportunities. While change can be uncomfortable in the moment, learning to navigate it can lead to amazing growth. Mentees drive these relationships, so don’t be afraid to ask for help! Debbie: Her most impactful mentors were not formal mentors but people she connected with over the years. As a mentor herself, she focuses on giving. Veronica: Mentees have a responsibility to work for their growth – they have to want to grow. Last month, we celebrated Black History Month with three incredible leaders. In this episode of Women Who Lead, we shared ‘un cafecito’ with Anita Legacy Blue, Alicia Knapp, and Dr. Courtney Johnson-Rose. Listen in to be inspired by their advice for future leaders and their views on creating a legacy. Meet the Leaders Alicia Knapp - President & CEO, BHE Renewables Anita Legacy Blue - LGBTQ+ Real Estate Alliance 2024 President Dr. Courtney Johnson-Rose - President of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers The Leaders’ Journeys Alicia moved up through Berkshire Hathaway by always striving to exceed expectations. She had the courage to take on challenging positions early in her career. Anita has always been a servant leader. She was offered the opportunity to work at the national level when other leaders saw her willingness to show up and be accountable. Courtney was “tapped on the shoulder” to move up into leadership roles, and initially, she said “no.” The push she received from a mentor convinced her to consider the opportunity. Understanding and Responding to Biases Anita was in the Air Force for 35 years. She understands being in a male-dominated world. She knows how to rise up, call out injustice, and bring truth to light. Courtney has learned how important consistency is. Gaining respect is not about inspiring fear in others - instead, we must consistently carry ourselves in a way that demands respect. Alicia worked with very few women on the front lines in the construction and utility businesses. She became the executive sponsor of the women’s employee resource group, so she had the opportunity to encourage women to enter roles in male-dominated industries. Mentoring Others Alicia recommends leading by example. We also have to show up and put effort in when working with those we are mentoring. Courtney’s responsibilities get in the way of mentoring individuals, but volunteering and acting in service are great ways to connect with mentors. Anita recommends learning to be mentored. Good mentors must be good mentees - don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Dealing with Conflict Anita suggests being empathetic and listening to others, but ultimately, we have to maintain integrity and lean into what’s right. Courtney advises people to solve problems by upholding the rules that keep our organizations working. Leading assertively is easy for Alicia, while empathy does not come as naturally to her. She keeps people around her that balance her and hold her accountable. Advice for Future Leaders Courtney: Be a leader that others want to follow. Anita: Excellence in all you do, and lead by faith. She still works as a realtor serving clients, but she also serves agents from the local to the international level. After a career as a school teacher, her path shifted when she became a mother. Jan fell in love with being a real estate agent the moment she took her first class and has found her passion and many amazing personal connections. Pam’s career in real estate began when she joined a real estate network. Though she loved the work, she worked in PR for many years. She returned to real estate because she enjoyed it so much! Overcoming Obstacles in the Industry Pam: Realtors have a responsibility to educate people on what agents actually do. Help buyers and sellers understand how agents can help them and how they help the community overall. Vicky: We have to evolve with the times. Skilled, knowledgeable realtors will be successful during this time. Do not stop learning so that you can offer value to clients. Jan: Being open-minded and willing to make changes is so important, but we also have to ignore some of the noise we hear - we are responsible for being on the ground with an awareness of how the industry is, and continue to defend it and build it up. Mentorship and Sponsorship Jan: Take inspiration from others, even if you can’t find a mentor to work with. Jan is inspired by many women. One of her mentors/inspirations is Toni McGowan. Pam: People like to be asked for help! If there’s someone you respect, just ask them out for coffee and just see what you can learn. Vicky: She had doors opened for her by Nancy Suvarnamani and Elizabeth Mendel-Hall, to name a couple. Belinda was an attorney looking for a career where she could also have the freedom to be involved in her kids’ lives. Nathaly is a natural saleswoman. Her #1 priority is to offer her kids an excellent education, and pursuing this led her to real estate. Mistakes Made Along the Way Belinda’s experience as an attorney gave her a mindset of driving points home and winning. She had to relax and remember that real estate is about people. Nathaly used to let negative thinking hold her back. Also, as an agent, she had to learn to care for herself and her body’s wellness rather than give all her time to clients. Tabitha reminds us of the importance of quality family time. Agents are always reachable, so we must make time for our families. Achieving Goals Nathaly reminds herself of her goals every day. She writes them down, uses pictures, and maintains a positive mindset to keep her going. Tabitha uses number-focused goals and puts them on her computer so she sees them daily. Also - she maintains clear lines of communication all the time. Her goals are always the goals of her team. She continuously educates herself and those around her. Someone who was already in the industry met her and said, “You need to be in real estate!” Susan was working for Bill Beazley Homes and was selected by Mrs. Beazley to take over her role in the business. Cara fell in love with financing and lending while working part-time in a bank. She then worked for mortgage companies and then started her own real estate business! How Do You Lead During Unstable Times? Susan: Real estate is an ever-changing market. Change quickly and fail quickly if you need to! Take new tech in stride and investigate it thoroughly. Cara: She thrives when the market shifts. Challenges help her jump into action. Part of being a good leader is staying positive and calm so your team stays engaged. Sylvia: Even though the market is always changing, there are always going to be sales. During good and bad times, we need to be practicing and honing our skills. Setting an Example of Work-Life Balance Cara: Her advice to young leaders is to make time for themselves or the stress will catch up with them. Introspecting helped her let go of the guilt and shame that came with self-care. Sylvia: Learning to say “no” has helped her focus on the important things in life, especially taking care of herself and staying present. Susan: She still struggles with work-life balance! Meet the Leaders Dr. Chitra Dorai – CEO/Founder of Amicus Brain Dr. Vanessa Montanez – Senior VP and Community Lending National Sales Manager at Citi National Bank Desiree Patno – CEO/Founder of Women in the Housing & Real Estate Ecosystem The Leaders’ Journeys Vanessa has been in residential lending for 27 years. She fell in love with helping families achieve their homeownership dreams, and that passion took her all the way to thinking of the big picture and helping families at a national level. Chitra was with IBM for 20 years as a top technical leader, CEO, and IBM fellow. She started her company for personal reasons – her mother was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and she realized she was not alone in dealing with the challenges of being a caregiver. Desiree has always been a problem solver. She loved selling homes, but was always looking for the next problem to be solved – in the foreclosure crisis, she became a connector and solution strategist to protect communities. The Moments When Everything Changed Dr. Chitra was VERY successful at IBM, but when she became one of her mother’s caregivers, she knew she had to throw herself behind a new passion. Her product uses AI to support caregivers at all stages of supporting those with neurological degenerative disease. Dr. Vanessa’s moment came when she was laid off. She took her severance package and decided to spend it on something she truly loved: learning. She went back to school to understand more about executive leadership in the wake of the 2008 crisis. Desiree was recruited into working in the gender space of highly wealthy people in real estate. “Clubhouse” is a collective-created audio app that grew out of the pandemic shutdown to bring people of many specializations together to connect and share ideas. Their job is to make sure that a client's home-buying process goes as smoothly as possible. Buyers and sellers entrust them with personal information, money, and to ensure that they get them a good title. The protectors pay attention to the trends to make sure that they understand where the business is heading. They understand the customers' needs and adapt to fit their needs. How do they overcome challenges? Tonia says that everyone faces challenges but if you commit to doing your best and serving your client, you will flourish. Amy has realized that everyone has challenges and in her career, she has found success by working hard and being pragmatic in her decision-making. Lisa found strength in being confident in herself and trusting herself. What advice do they have for future leaders? Lisa recommends a leadership development group. During a leadership development group, she learned how to lead large teams during times of rapid change. Tonia says to be open to volunteering and stepping up in your organization. Meet the leaders - COO at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Northwest Real Estate - President First Weber Inc. - Chief Executive Officer at Long Realty Company How the leaders got started in real estate Reneé started in a mortgage organization working as a loan officer. 22 years ago she got the opportunity to move to Tucson and work for Long Companies where she now serves as CEO. Tammy started her career in retail and found very quickly that she loved helping people put together their wardrobes. She discovered her love for service and was recommended by a close family friend to start doing real estate. Melanie was introduced to real estate through family relations and spent the first part of her career on the title and escrow side of the business. She now serves as COO at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Northwest Real Estate and Real Estate Professionals in Oregon and Washington, overseeing all aspects of operations. What's the secret to creating a great work environment? There is no secret about it, Tammy recommends getting out of your corporate office and in front of your people. Treat everyone with respect and make a point of listening to your staff. Positively impacting people's lives in any way possible. Make everyone you interact with feel important and a part of the goal. Have an authentic desire to serve and surround yourself with people who share the same philosophies. Spend the majority of your time in the field with your staff. What has been a life-changing event for the leaders? Reneé remembers early in her career when she was 22 years old and was given a chance by her leaders to oversee mortgage operations. This changed her career and gave her an opportunity to prove herself. The great recession had a massive impact on Melanie because she had employees looking to her for answers. She was able to lead during adversity and also reinvent the way her organization ran. 20 years ago Tammy found herself in a boardroom with 10 men signing papers to become a full partner. At this time there were not a lot of women in executive leadership. This experience motivated her to prove herself every single day. What is the biggest risk they have taken? Tammy says she takes risks every day and that if you want to be successful in your field, you need to be willing to take risks. Reneé’s biggest risk is the same experience she shared as her life-changing event… and jumping out of an airplane. Melanie’s biggest risk was pivoting her career into a new path. What advice would you give to your younger self? Don’t let anybody else define you and learn to draw boundaries. When a problem surfaces, address it immediately. Learn to make difficult decisions and act. Choose to do something you are passionate about and commit to it. It won’t always be easy but it will be worth it. You can do anything that you want to do as long as you work hard and continue to move forward. How have you overcome bias? Tammy says that a powerful man is admired and a powerful woman walks a fine line. As a young woman trying to start an organization, Reneé faced lots of discrimination. Her advice is to earn people's respect by going above and beyond. Melanie has overcome bias by blocking out the noise and putting in the extra effort. These inspiring women share their thoughts, experience, and insights working in a professional environment and how their culture, values, and upbringing paved the way for their success. Meet the Empowering Latinas: Rosamaria Acuna, Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties Monica La Crue, Affordable Lending Manager at Freddie Mac Angelica Silveyra, Director, Customer Service at NV Energy How they get started in their businesses: Monica began by accident, becoming an assistant in the real estate industry and progressing to her current career at Freddie Mac helping agents and mortgage professionals make relationships with their clients. Rosamaria left to earn her degree, and she’s thankful her family’s strong bond allowed her to pursue an education and own a home by her early twenties. Angelica became a summer intern at NV Energy and eventually applied for a job in customer service at the same company. The program paid for her education, and she’s remained at the company ever since. Growing up in immigrant families: Angelica’s family was extremely close-knit, and her parents taught her the value and importance of hard work to get where she wanted to be. Rosamaria is the second-youngest in her generation of kids in her family. Hard work and caring for others are integral to her and her family’s morals. Today, Rosamaria instills those values in her two daughters. Growing up with two languages and cultures made navigating school challenging. However, the love and support of her friends and family helped her overcome. She couldn’t advocate for herself then, which is why she is so passionate about advocating for others now. Monica grew up in a single-parent household, with her dad raising all four children. However, because he was in the Marines, she was raised by her family in a collaborative and loving atmosphere. Advocating for mentorship: Monica used to see her age and experience as limiting factors. Having mentors who encourage you to push past boundaries to meet new expectations is helpful and promotes professional growth. Real estate can be a second career for many people looking to put in as much as they’re willing to. After realizing there’s a gap in knowledge of real estate agents, Monica loves that Freddie Mac educates and informs agents to help them do their best work. Advice to younger self? If there’s anything you want to accomplish, the worst that can happen is that you’re told no. Always find the positives. Apply for jobs and careers and opportunities you’re interested in. Even if you check half the requirements, apply. Don’t apply just because you aren’t the “perfect” candidate. Surround yourself with role models because we rise and grow by lifting those around us.
