Information Technology Has Been a Key Driver of Domestic Earnings Over The Last Two Years
Consensus estimates point to 12.50% earnings growth for the S&P 500 Index in 2025, with elevated expectations visible in the information technology, consumer discretionary, and health care sectors. As information technology has been a key driver of domestic earnings over the last two years, the sector has comprised a larger and larger share of overall index earnings. The current level is not necessarily concerning, but the concept bears consideration. Elevated earnings concentration can introduce index-level volatility should estimates change, especially given that the sector in question constitutes 33% of the S&P 500 Index. On the contrary, we see potential for diversification of earnings within the U.S. market. As earnings growth from the “Magnificent 7” tapers, contribution from a broader subset is expected in 2025. Robust earnings growth across a more diversified slate can stoke a more inclusive rally in the domestic equity market. Managing your own $500K+ portfolio? Avoid these things for your financial health.
Are you managing your own portfolio or outsourcing to a professional? If you’re looking at an investment structure, why not think of individual stocks? Tax intricacies on mutual funds are muddy as best. When stocks work against us it's our job to harvest the loss, bank it and set it aside. You can use those losses for years to benefit your bank account when pulling money out for a big project, to buy a house, or anything else that would incur capital gains. This tax harvesting strategy is possible with the purchase of a well-diversified portfolio of individual stocks. With mutual funds the intricacies around taxes aren’t as clear. But with individual stocks and the right professionals in your corner, you could have a significant difference in payout when you’re realizing capital gains with a well-diversified portfolio of individual stocks. #56: You missed the cocktail party, but the reception is just about to begin - Q4 Quarterly Edge Report
Watch the episode on YouTube here https://youtu.be/slP0qDhDuU0 In a changing domestic environment, a thoughtful assessment across and within asset classes is required. This includes an evaluation of both the sector and capitalization composition of investment portfolios. The domestic fixed income market has run in recent months, but we think bonds will continue to provide greater value than money market funds in the year to come. Welcome to the Quarterly Edge report by Blue Chip Partner’s Chief Investment Officer Daniel Dusina, CFA being interviewed by Managing Partner Daniel Seder, CFA, CMT, CFP®. At the sector level, history indicates that consumer staples and health care can offer the strongest performance at the start of a rate cutting cycle. Along the same lines, small cap stocks have historically outperformed larger publicly traded businesses after the Federal Reserve begins to cut rates. In fixed income, domestic bonds can offer additional value relative to money market funds in a declining interest rate environment. Short-term Treasury yields tend to decline ahead of Fed rate cuts, and income distribution from money market funds generally follows shortly thereafter. Help Protect Your College Kids with These Documents While Their Brains are Still Developing
As your child gears up for college, things change. They have gone from being a minor and not able to sign contracts to becoming an adult. Once your adult child turns 18, you as parents do not have rights to ANY of their finances, healthcare information, or school records. If your kid got into a car accident, was unconscious, and you went to the hospital and needed information from the nurse, you would again be denied information. There are certain documents that make the transition to adulthood easier for you and your kids. In this episode of Blue Chip Now, hosts Daniel Dusina, CFA, Matt Mondoux, , and Dan Seder, are joined by special guest to explore essential legal documents every parent should consider as their children transition into adulthood and head off to college. S2 E29: Company Retirement Plan Strategy for Long-term Success. Understanding Traditional vs. Roth 401(k) plans
Watch the full video of this podcast on YouTube ! In this episode of Blue Chip NOW!, we discuss the best ways to allocate a 401(k) plan properly, common mistakes people make, and how to get the most out of your workplace retirement plan. Join Daniel Dusina, Matt Mondoux, and Dan Seder as they explore different investment options, the benefits and drawbacks of various 401(k) structures, and why reviewing and adjusting your allocations regularly is essential. Many people think of their 401(k) as a separate entity. Most are not going to be tapping in anytime soon so they treat it differently compared to other investments. Generally speaking, this is a large part of an individual's investable assets and a huge component of their overall balance sheet. 401(k)s have changed. There didn't used to be as much excitement around retirement accounts. There are now Roth options, after tax options, brokerage link options, and more. Many have the option to self-direct their 401(k) and invest in individual stocks which opens the possibility for personal gain that before wasn’t an option for most. If you have not looked at your 401(k), 403(b) or even your 529 plan in a while you may want to or hire a professional to help. Key Points From This Episode: [00:01:07] Changes in 401(k) investment options and the introduction of Roth options. [00:05:34] Advantages and disadvantages of a traditional 401(k) versus a Roth 401(k). [00:10:08] Investment options within workplace retirement plans and the pitfalls of a "set it and forget it" approach. [00:12:54] Overview of target date funds, their pros and cons, and why visibility into them is crucial. [00:16:22] Analysis of international investments within target date funds and their performance relative to U.S. markets. [00:20:18] The importance of coordinating 401(k) allocations with other investable assets. [00:23:11] Observations on the impact of plan size on fund costs and the importance of expense ratios. S2 E28: International Investing- a drag or diversification strategy?
Watch the full podcast video on YouTube ! In this episode of Blue Chip NOW!, , and explore the topic of international versus domestic stock investments. They discuss the concept of being underweight in international stocks, why this is their current strategy, and the various factors influencing this decision. The conversation spans the challenges of finding innovative companies abroad, the impact of multinational companies on domestic portfolios, and the role of benchmarks in investment strategies. They also touch on the historical performance of international markets compared to the U.S. and analyze potential shifts in market leadership. Key Points From This Episode: [00:00:00] Make sure investing internationally is actually worth your while. [00:02:23] Explanation of what underweight means and how it is applied in their model. [00:03:26] Comparison of U.S. and international market cap indices. [00:04:02] Diversification strategies and the role of international stocks in a portfolio. [00:05:28] The importance of multinational companies in providing international exposure. [00:06:28] Revenue sources for domestic companies and their international exposure. [00:08:29] The impact of U.S. innovation and technology on market performance. [00:09:57] Challenges in finding high-growth companies in international markets. [00:10:45] The sector composition of international indices and its implications. [00:12:31] The diversification benefits of international stocks during market downturns. [00:15:08] Exploring the conditions for increasing international exposure. [00:17:09] The importance of innovation spreading to international markets. [00:18:44] Challenges of attracting IPOs to international exchanges. A message from the team: We are underweight in international stocks but NOT international economies. Our model weight is 8%, while the average advisor had an allocation of 21% last year. We are also underweight relative to global indexes. Or are we? When we choose which stocks to invest in, we like to ask the question, “Where is revenue actually coming from?” Our approach to international markets at Blue Chip Partners leverages exposure to large U.S.-based multinationals instead of mimicking a traditionally weighted international segment. We are exposed to international economies in what we believe to be a more fruitful way by investing in domestic companies that have international reach. It makes it easier to manage risk if you’re investing in a way that blends in exposure instead of picking a country. The target date funds/portfolio is your classic set-it-and-forget-it global “diversification” strategy. Target date funds are NOT how we diversify here at Blue Chip. To repeat, we’re underweight in international stocks, but NOT international economies. Q3 2024 Quarterly Edge: Politics play no role in your portfolio - The market doesn’t care who is president
Watch the full video episode on YouTube ! With the presidential election coming up, what does that mean for volatility in stocks? We believe that politics don’t cause volatility in the market: uncertainty does. Welcome to a special Quarterly Edge episode of Blue Chip NOW!, where Chief Investment Officer Daniel Dusina CFA® and Managing Partner Dan Seder CFA®, CMT, CFP® share their outlook for the financial quarter ahead. In our conversation, we discuss trends in the equity market, the influence of the presidential campaign, and why investors need to adjust their expectations. Discover what the future holds for fixed-income investments, why bonds remain a smart choice, key AI investment insights, valuable strategies to prepare for market volatility, and more! If you read , you will recall that elections in and of themselves have no observable impact on calendar year performance. Returns experienced by investors in U.S. markets in Q2 2024 were meaningfully different than those seen in the first quarter. In Q1, the S&P 500 Index provided a double-digit return, the average S&P 500 stock advanced at a high-single-digit clip, and bond market returns ended in negative territory. In Q2, the concentration of returns seen in 2023’s equity market was again evident.
