Hi, I’m Gina Leggio. Having been a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist for over 20 years, I’ve observed how the mental health field has emphasized self-esteem. I’ve also noticed how this can be counterproductive because it involves self-evaluation, which causes insecurity, anxiety, and more. I define Selfless Esteem as freedom from self-consciousness by focusing on our Creator, who is “the Beginning and the End” (Revelation 1:8). The result is joy and peace. Dear Selfless Esteem, I feel so depressed sometimes that I don’t get out of bed. My family tells me to snap out of it or they try to cheer me up but it’s not helping. I’ve also noticed how this can be counterproductive because it involves self-evaluation, which causes insecurity, anxiety, and more. I define Selfless Esteem as freedom from self-consciousness by focusing on our Creator, who is “the Beginning and the End” (Revelation 1:8). The result is joy and peace. Dear Selfless Esteem, I think I’m a victim of religious trauma because I’m such a perfectionist. I’ve been this way since I was a child, and although there’s some things I’m grateful for in my upbringing, religion isn’t one of them. Whenever something bad would happen to me, a church leader or a church member would say God’s punishing me for some unconfessed sin.
