#351: 3 Ways to Attract Top Talent: Autonomy, Title & Flexibility
OVERVIEW Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, talks about how to attract the top talent to your team when starting or running a new business. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: If you’re launching or starting a new business, building a team of talented people is important for growth. When you have a great team, you can deliver great products and service. When it comes to hiring new employees, position the benefits of working for your company, especially if you can’t offer a big salary. One advantage of working for an entrepreneur is autonomy – often not found in the corporate sector. There are layers, meetings and bureaucracy you have to go through with larger entities in the corporate world. Talented people want room to grow and the ability to make decisions. This includes managing budgets and teams, as well as being able to create and come up with solutions. When employees can make decisions, they feel empowered and have a sense of pride in their work. Another perk you can promote is providing a title. This boosts morale and can serve as a stepping stone for your employees further down the road if they decide to pursue other opportunities. Flexible hours help your employees improve their work-life balance. Beyond hours, flexibility can also include working remotely and having time to take vacations. If you want to attract the top talent to your team, verbalize, communicate and market the benefits of working for your new business. Do this across all channels including job boards, your website and during interview questions. Hiring the top talent allows you to take your business to the next level. #350: When Should you Discharge an Angry Customer?
OVERVIEW: Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast talks about the best way to manage irrational and overly demanding customers. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: When you own a business, complaints are something you can't escape. There are ways you can manage angry customers while maintaining the integrity of your company. Be empathetic and listen to what unsatisfied customers are saying. Put yourself in their shoes and really listen to the core reason behind their complaint. Unhappy customers are louder than happy customers. They're going to make more noise. Always try to resolve the situation before it gets worse. Managing customer expectations, especially customers who escalate easily, can be correlated to the price of your product or service. Minimize the opportunity to complain. If your costs are higher, you'll attract a higher quality customer. Believe it or not, sometimes the customer isn't always right. Don't be afraid to discharge them from your business. Jason shares his former general manager's philosophy and how it resolved sticky situations in the past. Don't feel guilty about taking charge and putting a stop to irrational and insistent customers. TWEETABLE QUOTES: “Unhappy customers are louder. They're gonna make more noise than a hundred happy customers.” – Jason Duprat “Discharge your irrational customers, because at the end of the day, it's not worth it – as long as you know you did everything right.” – Jason Duprat CONNECT WITH JASON DUPRAT: | | | | RESOURCES: Sign up for one of our free business start-up Masterclasses by heading over to Have a healthcare business question? #349: From Pharmacy to Agency: How David Lu Changed His Trajectory with Video Production
OVERVIEW: “We're not competitor-obsessed, we're customer-obsessed. We start with what the customer needs and we work backwards.” — Jeff Bezos Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, sits down with David Lu, Founder of Axon Video Strategy. In this episode, David shares how he combined his years of Pharmacy experience, passion for Business, and for Video Production expertise to build his value-driven career today. We also learn what separates a regular skill from an in-demand, client-centric service. Tune in to learn more of David's timeless wisdom. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: David grew up with a passion for business-related topics. David's sister started her own Film Production Company in LA and he worked for her for several shoots. He studied Video Production on his own and eventually did Video side projects alongside doing Pharmacy work. He wanted to do what he loved and empower others to do what they loved, so he combined his interest in business with his Video Production skills to pursue that. One of David's techniques for overcoming Impostor Syndrome is practicing gratitude. Whenever he feels discouraged, a trusted friend reminds him of his accomplishments and helps him to be grounded. It's one thing to provide a service, but another thing to provide a metrics-focused result. Rather than focusing on providing Video Production, the highlight of David's business is providing inquiries or leads for businesses. David niching down to serving medical practitioners came down to three factors: Leveraging his existing background in healthcare Who would benefit from his products and services Who is willing and able to pay for his services. When choosing an editor, choose someone who can tell your story. If they don't know the objective of the video, the edit's going to be pointless. You can reach David through or his email, . TWEETABLE QUOTES: “If someone has Impostor Syndrome, all it means is that they're human. #348: 7 Tips for Mitigating Data Breaches & Hacks
OVERVIEW Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, talks about why your business should get cybersecurity insurance and different ways to mitigate risks regarding your business' data being hacked or stolen. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Are you taking the right security measures when protecting yourself and your business' data? The recent attack on SolarWinds Orion software is one of the greatest US cybersecurity breaches and affected close to 18,000 companies. The breach led to massive data compromises in big corporations, including governmental agencies, and will take years to identify the damage that's been done. The cybersecurity of your business should always be one of your biggest priorities. Your online data footprint is vulnerable to an attack at any time so protect yourself by purchasing cybersecurity insurance. Use two-factor authentication, which sends a pin code to your cellphone to verify logins. Review your password management protocol. Change your passwords every 6 months and use unpredictable passwords – including a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, along with symbols and numbers. You can also use third-party password software tools such as LastPass. Never plug anything unknown into your computer, such as a thumb drive or CD. They can contain malicious codes that can compromise your computer's files. Set up your routers properly. Change the username and password and check if your router password is encrypted. Make sure you turn on automatic updates for your software to periodically check for viruses. Remember to also include Windows Updates as well. Use open networks with caution. Invest in your wifi hotspot on your phone to prevent unwanted data breaches from suspicious open networks. #347: The Importance of the KISS Principle

#347: The Importance of the KISS Principle
OVERVIEW: “Keep it simple, stupid!” – A design principle noted by the U.S. Navy Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, talks about keeping your business “Simple.” Jason shares one of the most common traps new business owners fall into – chasing “Shiny Objects” or feeling the need to be “Extraordinary.” You don't need to do extraordinary things to achieve extraordinary results, and in this episode, Jason explains why. Tune in until the end to hear about Jason's new rank-topping book! EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: “Keep it simple, stupid” is a powerful motto Jason has followed since he heard it from his high school teacher. People often believe they need to be wildly “extraordinary” and accomplish “complex” feats. In an interview, Warren Buffet once said, “you don't have to do exceptional things to get exceptional results.” Instead of doing extraordinary things, strive to do simple things extraordinarily. In business, complex systems can cost you effectiveness and efficiency. Keep things at a level where it's easy for everyone to understand. Simple systems and processes benefit you during turnover, as it isn't difficult to pass on responsibilities if they are easy to understand. Pursue businesses that are simple and boring but deliver exceptional results. Business owners who dislike doing “boring” work and are distracted and chase down new, exciting, shiny objects usually deliver subpar results. Moving from “good to great” and “great to exceptional” takes a lot of time, effort, repetition, and going through the “boring” things that feel as if they don't make any progress. As an example, Jason and his team are in the process of simplifying their business. He will consolidate his different business entities into one overarching brand called “Healthcare Boss” to avoid the complexity of using several accounts for several apps. TWEETABLE QUOTES: “Keep it simple. If you have a complex business model with complex systems, you're setting yourself up for failure because those take a tremendous amount of resources and mental energy.” – Jason A. Duprat “Every time you're making a business decision about systems, processes, operations, and marketing, think forward and anticipate the impact it's going to bring years down the road.” – Jason A. #345: Automating Business Processes with Workflow, Tools and AI to Improve Efficiency
OVERVIEW: “Efficiency is doing better what is already being done.” – Peter Drucker Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, talks about the importance of systems and processes. In business, every single second of every single team member counts, so in this episode, Jason teaches us how to streamline workflows and maximize efficiency and productivity through automation, software, and A.I. tools. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: All businesses run on a series of workflows, wherein much of what our team members or we do is repetitive. Jason runs us through his repetitive workflow when producing and publishing his podcast as an example. Jason learned some of his workflow efficiency strategies from Richard Winters, part of his Mastermind Group and a previous guest on this podcast. Document every step of your or your team's tasks or job functions. All the individual steps in these processes require multiple clicks and much time. We can optimize any workflow by reducing repetitive tasks to a minimum. To help streamline his business processes, Jason ensures he's always up-to-date with the latest software and technology and utilizes whatever is most beneficial. A Standard Operating Procedure (S.O.P.) is a step-by-step list of instructions for doing something in your business. Start utilizing S.O.P.s, software tools, and automation strategies while your business is small. Once your business grows and is at max capacity, it'll be difficult to build these systems. A benefit of having S.O.P.s is it makes turnovers easier, as all the tasks new people need to be trained on are all located in the same place. TWEETABLE QUOTES: "Anytime a human is involved in anything, there's a chance of making errors. Software tools and automation help make workflow less error-prone." – Jason A. Duprat "Build your systems and processes while your business is still small or before you even start your practice. #344: The Importance of Unique Criteria and Headhunting Your Manager
OVERVIEW: “People are not your most important asset. The right people are.” – Jim Collins Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, talks about the best practices when hiring for managerial roles. In this episode, Jason recalls his experiences with recent mis-hires, his key takeaways to avoid potential hiring mistakes, and red flags to consider when screening applicants. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Jason recently had mis-hires for the marketing director position of his business. He's since learned from these experiences and has solidified his hiring process. For your business to grow 3x or 5x, you'd want to hire someone with proven experience. Use personality tests to identify an applicant's compatibility with a role. Jason suggests doing a minimum of three interviews to evaluate an applicant thoroughly. Write precise job descriptions with included KPIs they'll be responsible for. To attract great people, ensure a great working environment with excellent company culture. Hire people who fit your company's culture and core values. Hire people who are genuinely passionate about what they do, not those who work for money alone. From Alex Hormozi: Don't hire entrepreneurs. Hire intrapreneurs. Avoid hiring unemployed managers, as they may be underperformers who were terminated. Check out Jason's book . TWEETABLE QUOTES: “Hire managers for their experience, not their potential.” – Jason A. #342: Understanding The Bell Curve of Entrepreneurship
OVERVIEW: Challenges are gifts that force us to search for a new center of gravity. Don't fight them. Just find a new way to stand.” – Oprah Winfrey. Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, talks about the Realities of Entrepreneurship through the "Bell Curve of Entrepreneurship." In this episode, Jason shares his advice on how to deal with frustration as a business owner, a challenge he has faced lately in his business, and how he overcome that situation. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Bell Curve of Entrepreneurship consists of X and Y axes, wherein the Y-axis indicates the probability, while the X-axis indicates the distribution of the dataset. Most entrepreneurs running decent businesses are in the middle (mean score) of the bell curve. On one side of the bell curve is Extreme Satisfaction or Elation, On the other side is Extreme Dissatisfaction or Frustration. As an entrepreneur, you won't always be satisfied with your business. There will be days when you will feel extreme frustration. One common challenge businesses face is finding great talent with adequate leadership skills, especially in marketing. It takes a lot of work to find online marketing experts. Those with marketing degrees are often into traditional marketing instead of the newer digital marketing. Marketing is one of the most critical business components you should invest in. You need a strong marketing arm to keep up with your business plans. Frustration is normal and makes you better. Don't beat yourself up about it. Keep your eyes on the prize, focus, and always seek the advice of experts who've overcome your same struggle multiple times. Jason recommends joining Masterminds to get together with like-minded experts miles ahead in their progress. If joining Masterminds has yet to be an option, you may also join communities. TWEETABLE QUOTES: "Not every day are you going to be satisfied with your business. There are going to be moments of frustration, and that's the reality of business." – Jason A. #341: How to Use the Value Ladder to Scale Your Business From Free to Premium
OVERVIEW: "When the customer comes first, the customer will last." - Robert Half Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, talks about the Value Ladder, a vital strategy to scale your business. In this episode, Jason shares the importance of the Value Ladder, how it can increase Customer Lifetime Value, and the examples of services included in his Value Ladder. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Jason enumerates various products and services that are part of his Value Ladder. The Value Ladder consists of low-level to high-level services. With each step up the value ladder, the higher the investment and the higher the value for the customers. The first step in Jason's Value Ladder is free services such as his Podcast and Newsletters. The second step is Jason's book, "Clinic Launch Secrets," launching soon. The third step is Jason's courses: Ketamine Academy, IV Therapy Academy, and the newly launched Med Spa Launch Academy. Jason and his team are working on tiers even higher than that, such as SEO tools. No matter the kind of business you own, always have free content or services available to your customers. Jason recommends sharing free content on YouTube as it's the second-largest search engine and is run by Google. As a customer, with free content, you have to do all the work yourself. However, when you pay more, you're paying for best practices to save yourself from potential mistakes of financial losses. Not everyone immediately jumps to the higher tiers. They may start with the free content or services and then move up when they're interested in more advanced services. The biggest challenge for clinic owners is the marketing of their service, lead generation, and customer retention. The essence of the Value Ladder is to keep your patients coming back or the Lifetime Customer Value (LCV). TWEETABLE QUOTES: "If nobody knows about your business, you won't have any customers. The best way to get yourself out there is through free or low-cost entry points." – Jason A. #340: A Guide to the Product Life Cycle, Cash Generation, and the BCG Matrix
OVERVIEW: Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, talks about the Product Life Cycle and what it means for your business. In this episode, we'll learn how Cash Generation ties in with Cash Usage as Jason elaborates on the Growth Share Matrix and its four quadrants. Tune into this episode to learn more about leveraging your business income! EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Jason uses the BCG matrix, a diagram that helps to put things into perspective what big companies go through when they have multiple products and divisions and they're trying to work towards the following product or service line. The BCG Matrix is also referred to as the Growth Share Matrix. This applies to you if you have a business, big or small, whatever industry. If you want to keep growing, you must leverage your Cash Cow's revenue to start a new product or service line. The problem with cash cows is that the product can die down. The delivery can get stale, and new competition can come in.” You can't just sit on one Cash Cow and expect it to last forever. What most businesses do is they'll invest the money earned from that Cash Cow. Throughout the episode, Jason discusses different services they're working on as an example of how to leverage the BCG Matrix. While this isn't a hard rule, Jason suggests not putting all your time and investment into “Dogs” because that's not where the business growth opportunities are. Solving your existing customers' problems is much better for ROI and increases your Customer Lifetime Value (CLV). TWEETABLE QUOTES: "The Cash Cow is what your business leverages to produce the income necessary to develop, add, create, or build additional products or services." – Jason A. #339: The Proper Way To Execute Your Side Hustle
OVERVIEW: “Good things happen to those who hustle.” – Anais Nin Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, talks about the proper way to execute your side hustle. Coming from experience, Jason shares how side hustles should be done discreetly and wisely when you have a full-time job and the possible consequences of not doing so. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Many individuals start their side hustles while working full-time for an employer. Jason highly encourages you to start a side hustle. Don't burn bridges along the way. Be careful not to let your employer find out about your side hustle, as they could view it as you not being fully committed to your job. In the worst-case scenario, you might get an ultimatum from your employer. If you are pursuing a side hustle, do it discreetly without revealing the details to everyone. Once your business is enough to sustain your cost of living, transition out of your job, which is what Jason did. To do your side hustle discreetly, refrain from doing things that will draw a lot of attention to you being the business owner, such as having your name in the business and having your face revealed on the business' website. Share your business ideas and express your enthusiasm only to your clients, team, and family, not your co-workers. There are substantial tax advantages, your business could scale and exceed the income from your full-time job, it is fun and challenging, and you have complete autonomy. TWEETABLE QUOTES: "I encourage you to definitely start those side hustles because they can be life-changing." – Jason A. #338: Build The Business of Your Dreams: Aesthetic Medicine for the Primary Care Physician with Rebecca Weiss
OVERVIEW: "Before buying anything, it is well to ask if one could do without it." – John Lubbock Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, sits down with Rebecca Weiss, Co-Owner and Family Medicine Practitioner of Norterra Family Medicine, Co-Owner of Main Street Medical, Owner/Physician of Paradise Medspa and Wellness, and CEO of Tox & Tonix, LLC. In this episode, Rebecca shares practical wisdom from her years of experience, and how her past mistakes helped shape her success today. Tune in to learn about common traps new business owners should look out for and how to avoid them. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Rebecca Weiss' entrepreneurial journey began when she decided to leave a job she didn't enjoy, was bombarded with clients, and wasn't able to give her clients complete care as much as she wanted. As a proponent of Direct Primary Care, she believes in making medicine affordable, getting rid of 3rd-party insurance, and making patients' generic medications cheaper. Rebecca doesn't buy warranties for her devices. Instead, she pays for any repairs separately, which is more cost-effective in the long run. Draw the line between employer and employee. Don't abuse her authority. She ensures that everyone feels valued and is part of the family. Figure out what motivates your employees to ensure a healthy work environment. Spend money on marketing. Get the ball rolling, and once your brand is known, you can cut back your costs. You don’t need every device to start your business. Don't be married to a brand, and don't fall for the sales pitch. Maintain rational decision-making above all else. 337: Why It's Important to Optimize Your Clinic's Website for SEO
OVERVIEW: “Best known always beats the best product.” - Jodelle Yount Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, talks about Search Engine Optimization and how it can help you grow your business. In this episode, Jason shares his experience with SEO, several components you should take note of, and how his business has grown and reached more audiences because of it. Tune into this episode to hear about a special service Jason wants to offer to his loyal podcast listeners. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Optimizing your clinic's website so various search engines can discover your website and rank it higher on searches. Get into the top 3-5 search rankings. An overwhelming majority of search clicks happen on the first 5 search results that pop up. Without SEO, to get people to your website, expect to pay a lot for ads, market yourself on social media, or rely on word-of-mouth referrals. The current recommendation is to have blog posts of no less than 500 words—the more words, the better, as long as they're high-quality keywords and topics. Ideally, you would want a blog or multiple blogs with relevant keywords and topics posted per week. Google has Web Crawlers which are AI that go to every page on every website and scan the data in the website. When writing blogs, consider which text you format as Headings as those are the tags targeted by Google when scanning pages. You can't duplicate content because Google tracks it and puts it lower on the search rankings. TWEETABLE QUOTES: “Search Engine Optimization can help get you free patients.” – Jason A. #336: How to Get Exactly What You Want From Your Business
OVERVIEW: To have it, you have to want it. Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, discusses defining your goal and achieving it. Jason teaches us how to block our time each day and identify if what we do each day is aligned with our goals. If you feel like you’re falling short of what you want, tune into this episode. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: If you have big goals but haven't met those goals yet, Jason challenges you to do things differently. The overwhelming majority of successful people are not any smarter than the average person. However, they manage their time way better than the average person. One of the things that Thomas Jefferson did was manage his time into blocks. Jason recommends starting out by blocking your 24 hours a day to 4 hours each, leaving you with 6 chunks of 4-hour time blocks. 2 chunks (8 hours) are usually dedicated for sleep, leaving you with 4 chunks (16 hours). You have to make some extra sacrifices because you have less time in the day to build what you need to build. What separates high-level entrepreneurs from others is their ability to utilize their time to generate value better than the average person. Redefine your goals based on what you're willing to give up and sacrifice. If you want to be in the 1%, you have to do what the 1% does. There's nothing wrong with not striving to be part of the 1%. The idea is to understand exactly what you want and set your priorities accordingly. TWEETABLE QUOTES: "If you spend your time doing something else, it means you valued that more than your goal. In other words, you didn't want your goal bad enough." – Jason A. Duprat "You need to give up the things that need to be given up to get the results you're looking for." – Jason A. #334: How Do You Not Feel Like You Need To Be Working In Your Business 24/7 And Prioritize Some Downtime?
OVERVIEW: Rest is part of productivity. Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, talks about taking the pressure off of being an entrepreneur. In today’s episode, Jason’s text community asks for advice on how to step away from the pressure of running their business and focus on downtime. If you’re an entrepreneur who feels almost burnt out, working 24/7 non-stop while chasing success, this episode is for you. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Join Jason's text community, and send a message to 386-284-4955. Community Question #1: "How do you not feel like you need to be working in your business 24/7 so you can prioritize some downtime?" Jason was part of a mastermind group called 2CCX Mastermind with Russell Brunson. Jason's mindset Coach, Lindsey, was using a framework that was really common in the therapy and coaching space: "Your circumstances influence your thoughts. Your thoughts impact how you feel emotionally. How you feel emotionally is going to have a lot of control over the actions you take." You have no control over your circumstances, but you have control over your thoughts. If you're hitting 80-85% of what you would generally target, you're on the right trajectory and can make improvements to reach higher. Community Question #2: "How do I get comfortable stepping away from my clinic?" People commonly think that no one can do what they do as well as they can. If you're hiring the right people, that won't happen. Hire people who can do 80-85% of what you would normally do in terms of quality and standard. Have the proper training, systems, and procedures in place to delegate responsibilities while you're away. TWEETABLE QUOTES: "You can't control every single thought that enters your mind, but you can control how long that thought stays, your response to that thought, and your feelings towards that thought." – Jason A. Duprat "You will burn out as an entrepreneur if you put too much pressure on yourself to produce a certain level of results within too short of a time period." – Jason A. #333: "Is Now The Time to Go All In With My Practice?"
OVERVIEW: “If you buy things you do not need, soon you will have to sell things you need.” – Warren Buffet Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, answers a question from his text community regarding making big purchases. In this episode, Jason runs us through a step-by-step calculation to determine whether or not an expensive purchase is worth it. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Jason features a question from his text community. The inquirer recently opened a MedSpa and is looking to purchase expensive equipment. They’re wondering if now would be the right time to continue with that purchase. Purchasing the equipment will add five additional services to what they can offer. There are no consumables related to those offers, and they can buy the laser at a discount. Jason recommends going back to the numbers. Typically, you don't want to finance anything that loses you money. However, in business, if you can buy something and pay for it over time while it makes you money, it's called Leveraging. You can look up free Amortization Calculators on Google. Don't focus so much on that big number. Instead, focus on the monthly payments and the number of patients required to execute and pay for this particular device. The first rule of business is to use Leverage to grow your business and your income. TWEETABLE QUOTES: “If you want to get an opportunity to buy an expensive piece of equipment, try and sit on it for a day or two. Don't let anybody pressure you into making quick, rapid decisions. Let your emotions simmer down and look at it from a rational, financial standpoint.” – Jason A. #330: Build An Aligned Community To Find Your Tribe and 10X Your Business Growth
OVERVIEW: “The job isn't to catch up to the status quo; the job is to invent the status quo.” – Seth Godin Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, talks about creating tribes, communities, and movements to help your business thrive. In this episode, Jason shares some of his takeaways from Seth Godin's book entitled “Tribes,” and encourages us to challenge the status quo and become the leaders we were born to be. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Jason has been studying how to create a tribe for #HealthcareBoss to help healthcare professionals who want to go against the status quo. To learn more about community-building, Jason is studying Seth Godin's book entitled “Tribes.” Instead of focusing on marketing, Seth Godin challenges business owners to create tribes, communities, and movements. You're not challenging the status quo if you're not getting on anyone's nerves. The way to create the community is to connect people with the same ideals of challenging the status quo. “Build your loyal followers and don't treat them as numbers.” – This is a common concept taught throughout Jason's courses. #329: Be Obsessed Or Be Average: An Innovator’s Guide To Building A Virtual Care Company With Guy Friedman
OVERVIEW: Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, sits down with Guy Friedman, CEO and Co-Founder at SteadyMD and HigherNext. In this episode, Guy shares the story of how he built his businesses from the ground up, the rationale behind each process, and how virtual care has contributed to the massive change in our healthcare system. Tune in to learn more about the greatest instrument he's wielded since childhood: his mindset. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Guy grew up questioning things and thinking of new innovative solutions to any problem he could think of. He started venturing into start-ups around 2010, then later translated his businesses into telehealth and digital health. SteadyMD was the highest version of virtual primary care you could access online in 2017. In 2020, they had an influx of other digital health companies asking to hire Guy's clinicians on their platform. This signaled the existence of a large market, so they geared the business into an on-demand 50-state clinician workforce wherein digital health companies can tap into. When hiring programmers, Guy recommends outsourcing from other countries for cost-effectiveness but always prefers to have at least one person from the US. Guy spent six months doing extensive research on telehealth, and digital health, and identifying how the healthcare industry could be improved for all. In fundraising, resign yourself to having hundreds of meetings and repeating yourself a lot. Do your best and keep grinding. Don't get discouraged and impatient. Treat it as a rite of passage, a battle you have to get through. Be diligent when listening to questions and adjust your pitch based on those, not on what you think is the most convincing argument. There's no excuse for not knowing everything about your industry, company, and competitors. With the convenience of the internet today, there's no excuse for not keeping up with the industry happenings. You can't fail if you don't give up. TWEETABLE QUOTES: "Always assume that systems aren't optimized in the best way possible; that there's room for innovation." – Guy Friedman "Do your research. #328: The #1 Production Hack to Alleviate Stress & Remain Organized
OVERVIEW: Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, talks about the importance of staying organized and shares what he's learned after years of running a business. He also discusses a great software tool that will help you manage your projects, team, and communications more efficiently. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Making mental to-do lists, using sticky notes, or keeping track of tasks through a calendar is fine, but having a systematized way to handle everything that needs to get done for your business is an absolute must. Asana is one of the best software tools Jason uses across multiple projects. One of the benefits is creating teams and managing communications for specific projects within the software program. Asana can be used to organize personal tasks as well, which is something Jason does. When you log in to the dashboard, you can easily see your to-do list for the day. Letting a software program organize your tasks or to-do lists leaves your mind free to think and work more creatively. Projects aren't stressful; the details are. Become a production expert and alleviate stress. One great software tool to help you do this is Asana. Communicating via email can be confusing and it can quickly create disorganization when several people are involved in a single project. This is particularly true if you're working with dozens of contractors, freelancers, and staff. #327: Psychedelic Law & The Use of Ketamine with Hilary Bricken and Ethan Minkin
OVERVIEW: Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love for humanity.” – Hippocrates Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, talks with Hilary Bricken, Partner and Attorney, and Ethan Minkin, Attorney with Harris Bricken, an international law firm. Hilary and Ethan discuss the legalities of psychedelics and ketamine. They also highlight the value of entrepreneurship for moving psychedelic efficacy and advocacy forward. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Ethan started his law career in 1999 with an interest in healthcare regulatory work, litigation, and transaction. He joined Harris Bricken 1.5 years ago with a focus on psychedelics. Hilary is a partner at Harris Bricken, and her expertise is in controlled substances regulation, legal reform, and policy reform. Psychedelics and ketamine have a potentially broader reach if regulations are relaxed. The path of entrepreneurship is critical for building a full suite of services for psychedelics. Hilary and Ethan are proponents of off-label ketamine because it’s innovative, guarantees an income stream, and is advantageous over its traditional use. Controlled substances can be prescribed through telemedicine under certain circumstances. Ketamine should be part of a treatment plan and not a one-stop option. Therapists and psychologists should be involved in a patient’s care plan. In the last three years, many clinics have added mental health therapy as part of their provider services. Combining ketamine and concierge care is possible as long as it's compliant with laws and regulations. False advertising is penalized under consumer protection laws, so credible studies must be cited in the literature. TWEETABLE QUOTES “A first-mover advantage is a thing, but if it’s ketamine, you’re dealing with a very antiquated, heavily regulated, extremely consequential system, so proceed accordingly.” – Hilary Bricken “If you’re treating someone for a mental health issue, make sure they’re also seeing a therapist or a psychologist, and not just getting ketamine and being sent on their way.” - Ethan Minkin CONNECT WITH JASON DUPRAT: | | | | RESOURCES: Sign up for one of our free business start-up Masterclasses by heading over to Have a healthcare business question? #326: Create Financial Freedom through Pseudo-Passive Income
OVERVIEW: Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, talks about creating a roadmap to becoming financially free through pseudo-passive income. He weighs in on three methods to do this. He also presents the advantages of owning a business - especially a medical practice - as one of the most effective methods for achieving financial gains using pseudo-passive income. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: There’s no such thing as passive income because you always need to do initial legwork and research. Jason prefers to call it pseudo-passive income and has identified three methods for this type of income to become financially free. One method is to decrease expenses. There are several experts on YouTube talking about how best to do this, many in the homestead space. This method also includes penny-pinching, clipping coupons, or searching for the best deals. This can be referred to as living a scarcity lifestyle. The second method is to increase your income by starting new businesses and building new revenue-generating streams. This is often referred to as choosing an abundant lifestyle. The third method is a hybrid model. It includes getting rid of bad debt and keeping your expenses reasonable while also increasing income. If you’re a budding entrepreneur, it’s better to build a new business from scratch rather than buy one and leverage its debt. When you build a business, you develop the necessary skills required to be an owner and generate cash flow. The ultra-rich invest and reinvest their cash flow into assets that don’t require a lot of work. They build businesses they can eventually extract themselves from so the business can run on its own and/or by a team. This provides a compound effect that has the potential to massively change your life. Jason encourages healthcare professionals to consider creating a business by owning a practice. #325: Finding A Medical Director 101: When Do You Need One, How Can You Find One, & How Much Should You Pay One?
OVERVIEW: “Play by the rules, but be ferocious.” – Phil Knight Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, relives the discussion about a widely-requested topic of Medical Directors. Do you need a Medical Director? How do you find a Medical Director? How much should you pay a Medical Director? Tune into this episode as Jason dives deep into each of these questions. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS A Medical Director’s role would include overviewing everything clinical-related in your practice, such as protocols, forms, standing orders, etc. If you don’t have a healthcare license, you need a Medical Director to oversee your practice. In some states, a physician is required to be the Medical Director and, sometimes, even own the medical practice or run a Management Services Organization. Review your state’s Nurse Practice Act to see if you can practice independently. To find a Medical Director, start by scouring your network with someone you know, like, and trust or posting on job sites with a thoroughly detailed job description. Be prepared to pay a professional salary. A Medical Director’s fee would be somewhere in the range of $750-$1,500 or more per month, depending on various factors. Have a backup plan. Use platforms to hire your Medical Director, and it will save you tons of time and money in instances where businesses shut down due to the absence of a Medical Director. TWEETABLE QUOTES “Trying to find the cheapest way is not always the best idea. You usually get what you pay for.” – Jason A. Duprat “You are paying for valuable service and you should be ready to compensate people on your team according to the amount of value they’re delivering.” – Jason A.
