Meet the Coaches: Founder, Karen McMahon's Story
This episode is being shared from the Divorced People podcast which Karen McMahon was recently interviewed on. Divorced People is a podcast about divorce, marriage, and relationships. The host, Nicole Quallen, a divorced person and collaborative divorce lawyer, speaks with story-tellers who have been through the difficult, beautiful, complicated, super-stigmatized institution and are brave and ready enough to share their experience with us all. Here is Nicole's introduction to this episode: Karen McMahon is the founder of Journey Beyond Divorce, a podcast and divorce coaching practice, and Karen has seen some sh%t! Karen is wise and kind and fun and funny and we had a blast sharing her long, incredibly difficult, and ultimately triumphant story. Karen began her divorce process 20 years ago, and is just now sharing her story for the first time in such detail. We talk about what it looked like to raise her children from elementary school-age through their early adulthood, how to make the big big leap to leave, mantras for the times of self-doubt, and lots about the transformative power of tough times. All Things Parenting: Long Distant Parenting: The challenges, rewards and best practices with Carrie Norwood
Distance parenting was a new term to me when I found today’s guest and given that I have been in the divorce field for over a dozen years, that surprised me. So today we are discussing “Long Distance Parenting: The challenges, rewards and best practices.” The term Distance Parenting refers to those who are parenting from afar…another state, region or country….physically very far away from their children. Carrie has been a distance parent for over two decades. She explains some of the circumstances that create this dynamic, addresses the stigma around it and shares some of the unique complexities faced by those navigating distance parenting. Carrie Norwood is also a bit unique in that she is not a ‘professional expert’ like so many of my guests. She’s actually a techy by trade. Carrie divorced over 20 years ago and found herself needing to long distance parent her 3 year old. She wasn't able to find a single piece of information on how to do it but was certain that failure was not an option. Carrie figured it out, began supporting other parents in a similar situation and ultimately founded distanceparent.org in 2003. is the internet's only comprehensive resource for long distance parents and Carrie has been a long distance parenting community facilitator since the organization’s inception. JBD Team Talks: You’re Not Crazy Part III - Exploring the Voices in Your Head
Part 3 of our series focuses on how to appreciate and benefit from the different voices in your head and their unique perspectives by using “The Brain Huddle” , a practice author Jill Bolte Taylor, PhD refers to as a “Power Tool for Peace”. The four voices or characters generated by four different types of neural tissue in our brains are somewhat stereotypical in their behavioral patterns which means that the more that you are willing to observe their responses/reactions to circumstances the more freedom you (and they) will have to work together to support you in a “whole brain life” Listen to Lisa and Karen review our four characters and introduce you to the five steps of the “The Brain Huddle”, a practice that starts with using your breath to calm the stress center of your brain. Once you’ve passed the 90 seconds it takes to step back and out of the stress response you’ll be able to hear and access the unique skills, knowledge, and perspectives of the other parts of your brain that are equally you. Lisa and Karen share real life examples of using the Brain Huddle to navigate challenging situations that arise during divorce and in life in general. If you want to move beyond the experience of fear, isolation, and despair that arises during divorce and be more effective and happier in your life, this show is for you. The neurons in our brains are not all alike. Our brains think and feel in four different ways, every one of us. JBD Team Talks: You're Not Crazy Part I - Exploring the Voices in Your Head
It is an all too human tendency to react to stressful situations in counterproductive ways, to attack out of intense emotion without a clear purpose, to accommodate long after it's healthy to do so, or to avoid addressing situations that are destructive. While these are rarely wise strategies, they are disastrous strategies prior to, in the midst of, and post divorce. During this episode and the following two Team Talks, Karen McMahon and Lisa Brick discuss an alternative approach to attacking, accommodating, and avoiding, help you to understand what part of your brain gets hijacked when you do, and how to be proactive, forward looking, and purposeful. When you use all of your brain, not just the hijacked parts, to handle the challenges that arise around divorce you begin to master your situation. These three Team Talks are based on the research and findings of neuroanatomist Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor in her 2021 book, Whole Brain Living: the Anatomy of Choice and the Four Characters That Drive Our Lives. Life After Divorce: A Roadmap to Deep Inner Peace Using the Four Characters in your Brain
Today Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor and I are discussing “A Roadmap to Deep Inner Peace: Understanding the Four Characters in your Brain”. We are exploring Jill’s concept that our brain has “Four Characters”. She shares the role (dare I say personality) of each of these characters. She also shares a powerful tool she has created called the Brain Huddle. This tool guides us to consciously invite all our characters into conversation with one another. We can then tap into their respective strengths and choose which one to be led by in any given situation. Dr. Jill was a brain scientist at Harvard when she experienced a severe stroke that wiped out the left hemisphere of her brain. It took eight years for her to completely recover and her new book ‘Whole Brain Living’ is what she learned from that experience. You might recognize her as the author of My Stroke of Insight, her TED talk on the topic was the first to ever go viral. Meet the Coaches: My High Conflict Divorce changed the Trajectory of my Life w/ JBD Coach, Tammy Oswald
Tammy shares her personal and professional experiences related to divorce in this episode. She grew up as a child of divorce with an absentee father, living in poverty and experiencing physical and emotional neglect as a result. Having no contact or support from her father, Tammy’s mother worked 3 jobs to make ends meet, making her unavailable physically, mentally and emotionally while struggling financially to care for two children on her own. Tammy shares her story of the day her heart for service was born and some of the struggles she overcame growing up in relation to divorce and the impact it had on her life. Tammy took her experiences and her heart for service and spent nearly three decades in the child welfare system as a social worker and child advocate before branching out into life and wellness coaching, and eventually, divorce and relationship coaching. Being a child of divorce, being Catholic and seeing marriage as a sacrament, and being a social worker who worked to help families every day, she talks of that being a trifecta for her staying in a marriage that she would never have left. It took serious and painful experiences that could not be undone, along with a high conflict divorce process to get her to face her fears and take a look in the mirror and see who she really was. That was the day she set out to make some changes, in her life and in herself. Tammy shares that everything she has learned to be an expert in are areas she has experienced personally, which fueled her desire to learn, grow and heal and use what she learned professionally to help others. Her passion is for helping others to empower themselves during crisis or conflict and to take a journey of self-discovery and self-love to reach their true and authentic self and get to a place of thriving! Voices of Celebration: How His Betrayal Led Me to Trust and Honor Myself
Trish reached out for coaching post divorce. She had already done so much work even prior to finding out about her spouse’s infidelity that became the beginning of the end of a 17 year marriage. With three children ages 11-18, Trish faced a harsh wake up call. She had been running on auto pilot, doing almost all the work of the household and raising the kids and her spouse was always ‘out working’ and not that involved in the family. She had stopped asking questions. While she navigated the divorce details with tenacity and resolve, when her ex and affair partner became ‘official’, she knew she hadn’t grieved the ending of their marriage and needed outside support to emerge whole and healthy. Trish dug into coaching and experienced the shift and freedom she wanted. Working with JBD Coach, Carrie Doubts, she learned how to use centering and boundaries to overcome some of the toughest times, detaching from her emotional reactions and creating concrete steps to move forward. An exercise addressing the affair partner also brought her the much needed closure Trish was looking for. Trish was afraid of losing access to my kids, telling people about her ‘failed’ marriage, and the financial doom and homelessness she envisioned. Today, she shares how none of those fears came true. How she is no longer afraid. She doesn’t have to double check with anyone, she feels more independent and she knows she will never again let someone treat her as if she doesn’t matter. Once you decide to divorce, the question of who to tell, when and how much can be overwhelming. In the early stages of divorce we experience a powerful emotional sting. Coming to terms with the fact that divorce IS part of your reality often happens when you begin to tell others about it. When telling your spouse, children, family, friends and others about your divorce fear and resistance arises. It is important that you prepare for the questions that you want to ask yourself prior to telling. Being clear on what you want to say and who you are ready to tell and what your boundaries are around discussing this tender topic will enable you to take this step with greater confidence. Everyone will have their own emotional reaction. Preparing for that as well is key to managing your own needs and peace. Throughout the process, being aware, making conscious decisions and setting an intention for how you want your divorce to unfold will enable you to feel empowered, stay calm and negotiate effectively. JBD Team Talks: I'm Anger: Don't Be Mad at Me with JBD Coach, KP Towers
Today Karen and KP examine the emotion of Anger. We explore it's value, why so many of us are afraid of it and how it can both inform and guide us in ways that can bring value. Understanding the root of our relationship with anger informs our conflict oriented, conflict resistant or conflict neutral approach to disagreements. The book, "Dance Of Anger" by Dr. Harriet Lerner describes anger as "a signal & one worth listening to". Dr. Learner wrote this book as an invitation to give ourselves permission to open to the lessons of our own anger and how we choose to respond to it.
