Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Lord Echo
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Lord Echo (MP3 Podcast on ) 2019-02-16 New Zealander Mike August, aka Mike Fabulous, aka Lord Echo (and a few more different pseudonyms), is one of those unique multi-instrumentalists/producers you can't pigeonhole in a specific style, blending reggae, funk, Caribbean disco, house, soul & afrofunk — but who's first and foremost a dub artist, just like our own Grant Phabao on the other side of the world... Between 2010 and 2017, he's put out three times the same album: with nearly the same title, cover artwork & musicians, and roughly the same blend of styles. All three, Melodies, Curiosities and Harmonies are fantastic and deeply recommended to our readers/listeners. There's also a handful of limited edition 7 inches pressed and released in Japan only, appearances on records from The Black Seeds, Shogun Orchestra (two bands Lord Echo's been a member of) or The Frightnrs, and a few other timeless recordings to hunt down. While constructing this mix, we picked something like 30 amazing tunes produced by, or featuring Lord Echo, and had to reduce the selection by half, to build this podcast... All that to say there's A LOT of music from the man for you to discover. He'll be touring Europe this year in late april/early may, mostly opening for >Fat Freddy's Drop. Try not to miss these, and in all cases, get those 3 albums as soon as possible, the vinyl reissues won't last long! (Hint : we have all three Lord Echo LPs plus a few CDs and rare EPs at the …) Tracklisting : 01. Fabulous/Arabia - Henry (from 'Henry' 7 inch, 2019 / Wonderful Noise Productions) 02. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Andrew Ashong
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Andrew Ashong (MP3 Podcast on ) 2019-12-29 A South Londoner of Ghanian descent, Andrew Ashong is a singer, guitarist, DJ and producer who's only released two EPs so far. On a house, soul and jazz tip, those gained him comparisons with Marvin Gaye, Roy Ayers, Bill Withers or Lewis Taylor — which should intrigue already enough for you to be eager to give this mix a listen. He's been heard collaborating with various musicians such as Tony Allen, Auntie Flo, DJ Yoda, Nightmares On Wax, Theo Parrish, Hector Plimmmer, Sbtrkt, Submotion Orchestra or Swindle… So if you're not excited by now, then you either suffer from musical ignorance or you have a deep reading problem. Anyway, at Paris DJs, we feel this guy has a unique soul sound, combining a smooth cosmic voice with sweet and deeply layered grooves. Hence this mix gathering tunes from his two EPs long with various appearances and collaborations… Hopefully we'll hear more from Andrew Ashong in 2020! Tracklisting : 01. Paris DJs Soundsystem - The Highlife Express - Deep & Funky Africa 80's
Paris DJs Soundsystem - The Highlife Express - Deep & Funky Africa 80's (MP3 Podcast on ) 2017-06-30 Hot on the heels of the first season of 15 episodes of Paris DJs & Le T-shirt Français "Wearplay" series, combining clothing, music and graphic design, we're already back with the first episode of the second season! While we won't be able to release a new episode every day of the week this time, we've tried our best to add a new wow factor to our concept. Paris DJs co-founder Loik cooked a hypnotic mix of deep & funky tunes from 1980s Africa, a perfect summer selection, destined to grow on you after repeated listening. Paris DJs' in-house sound engineer Grant Phabao then carefully mastered the mix, while poster artist Ben Hito draw an illustration inspired by the theme and music. Then Clément, the main man behind Le T-shirt Français, printed it on a cotton-brushed, made in France T-shirt of his own production. This mix is available as a free download in compressed MP3 format on Paris DJs' podcast, or as a high-quality audio file on , through a unique download code printed on the back of the Wearplay T-shirt. Last week's heat wave had us think : when it's that hot, it's high time to get on the groovy train and catch the "Highlife Express"! Whether people call it simply Highlife or Frimpong style, with a pinch of Afrosynth, funky, digital and cosmic vibes (check the second part of the last song!), this is a highly addictive sound. Acting like a soul massage for the heart, it's purely designed to make you feel good. We're proud to share with you these good vibes, through a selection of 80's vinyl mainly from Ghana, supposed to take you on a deep and groovy ride... Tracklisting : 01. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1985, 1986 & 1987 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.26
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1985, 1986 and 1987 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.26 (MP3 Podcast on ) 2017-06-13 We've reached 1985 and most of music is in a really bad shape. Music marketing is starting to morph thanks to the Grateful Dead who re-invented the direct-to-fan business the previous year, but music production is still hitting an unsurpassed low, almost everywhere. It might come as a surprise to everyone following this series of mixes of cover songs all recorded or released the same year, but there's no much sense in keeping on digging for many more months through mid-1980s music, while there's so much quality music from other periods… Which is why we've decided to hurry things up a little bit, with a mix gathering covers released between 1985 and 1987. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1984 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.25
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1984 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.25 (MP3 Podcast on ) 2017-01-30 1984 is the tipping point, the limit before things start to go really sideways for a few years in music… Out of the 12 tracks we picked here, two were already released in 1982 on small labels or pressings, and one was recorded live in Japan in 1983, so we're cheating a little bit. But the point is to make this mix of covers from 1984 enjoyable to the ears, right? It doesn't really matter, we found our way with some colorful doo-wop, reggae, blues, gospel, new-wave, p-funk, jazz and hip hop cover songs all from records released in 1984! Next week-end we should host a new Afrotropik mix from Loik and the next one we'll put up the follow-up to this yearly series, while every day of the week we'll release a new musical T-shirt in our "Wearplay" series, so stay connected! Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Friends & Family Vol.1
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Friends & Family Vol.1 (MP3 Podcast on ) 2016-02-15 For quite some time we wanted to cook a new "extravaganza" mix digging into the vast selection of current artists, bands and producers from the unique "Paris DJs universe". We started gathering recent and upcoming releases from friends, from people we’ve worked with in the past, from many of those musicians who just kill it out there, while being unheard on the radio. It would be impossible to feature them all in one mix, so we stopped at 50 tunes, from 50 different artists and 50 different records. Then we sorted them out by country of origin and found out half were coming from the USA! Maybe you haven’t heard of all those bands yet. How come? It really is a mystery. Anyway we cut the selection in two halves of 25 track each, and here’s a two-hours long selection of Paris DJs’ American friends & family for you to enjoy. And of course we’ll be back soon with another two-hours platter, of many more friends from all over the rest of the world! Tracklisting : 01. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1983 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.24
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1983 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.24 (MP3 Podcast on ) 2017-01-30 Things have been jumpy lately. The hard drive where ParisDJs.com was hosted died, we had to move to a new server and re-install all the backup. The website has been unavailable for a couple of weeks but we're back up finally, and it was high time we put up this selection of covers from the year 1983, which has been finished for a couple of months already! As you can imagine, since we're approaching the middle of the 1980s, things ain't getting any easier. As a record store owner was telling us some while ago, in 1983 cheap synthesizers landed on the market, sounding as cheap as their price, eveybody started using them, so music stopped being that interesting globally. Which doesn't mean there ain't no gem to find digging the crates, only that the digging has to go deeper than before! And that's how this mix was prepared, through hours of checking releases from 1983, hoping to find interesting, rare grooves from that year, which were covers of other songs… Well we found a private pressing more than inspired by Stevie Wonder, soulful, funky or tropical covers of Weldon Irvine, Rick James, Captain Beefheart, Sly Stone, Al Green, Led Zeppelin or David Bowie, and an early Danny Elfman take on Cab Calloway which will inspire him to re-do it for the "Nightmare Before Christmas" soundtrack (as the "Oingo Bongo song"). Tracklisting : 01. Calvin B. Rhone - We've Come To Praise Him (from 'Intimate Friend' album, 1983 / C.B.R.) STEVIE WONDER cover, more info on 02. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1982 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.23 (MP3 Podcast on ) 2017-01-09 Even though it's a brand new year and we have many projects cooking for Paris DJs in the coming months, let's not forget our fan-favorite ongoing series of mixes of cover songs. Michael Jackson released "Thriller", Prince somehow was already in "1999" while Talk Talk admits "The Party’s Over". Thankfully crate-digging can also lead to good surprises, as proven in this selection of blues, reggae, funk, disco, electro, P-Funk and new wave cover songs… Tracklisting : 01. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1981 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.22 (MP3 Podcast on ) 2016-11-02 From a groovy/tropical point of view, Interesting cover songs from 1981 weren't that easy to find. The sound of Sly & Robbie, present twice in this mix (with productions for The Tamlins or Bits & Pieces), was an obvious choice, but we've also dug up for you some classic soul, early electro/hip hop, New Orleans backbeat, deep reggae and leftfield grooves. Even with the hardest constraints, the Paris DJs sound rises like a phoenix everytime (no Conchita pun intended). Tracklisting : 01. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1980 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.21
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1980 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.21 (MP3 Podcast on ) 2016-09-23 Here we are in the deep sea of the 1980s hunting for cool and groovy cover songs. The Betino's Record Store in Paris pointed us towards Gnonnas Pedro's version of James Brown 'I Got You' but we we had mixed and mastered the selection a few hours earlier so it didn't make the cut. Someone on facebook asked if we played Snatch's version of 'Another Brick In The Wall' but we didn't. Digging into this decade is a different kind of fun than the 60s or the 70s, and we think we managed to find some very exciting numbers. You'll let us know what you think. And suggestions for 1981 and 1982 are more than welcome! Tracklisting : 01. Paris DJs Soundsystem - Jazz For Tiziano
Paris DJs Soundsystem - Jazz For Tiziano (MP3 Podcast on ) 2016-09-05 Tiziano was one of the top backers of Paris DJs' third crowdfunding campaign during the summer of 2015. He choose the reward with the 15 CDs and the exclusive mix, saying: "I like the music you offer and the idea of getting an exclusive cooked just for me got me interested. I like jazz and experimental music, I grew up with rock. I ESPECIALLY like trumper (Jon Hassel, Paolo Fresu, Mark Isham, Miles Davis of course, etc.). So if you could blend your selections with some trumpet, some jazz…". Damn! This one was not easy. It took us months to figure out something fitting those directions, while still being essentially a Paris DJs thing. Thankfully, Tiziano was patient, and loved the mix. He also gladly accepted that we share an mp3 of it with the rest of the world, so here you go. Enjoy! Tracklisting : 01. Ellis Williams - This Is The Call (from '' album, 2016 / self-released) 02. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1979 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.20
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1979 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.20 (MP3 Podcast on ) 2016-08-12 20 years already! This series of mixes, of cover songs recorded or released during the same year, started with 1960, and we've now reached 1979! The 1960s and the 1970s have been fully covered — pun intended. For this closing chapter on the seventies, we've been diggin' heavily into Jamaican music once again, with reggae adaptations of The Drifters, Sam Theard, Ann Peebles or Bob Dylan, and a reggae/disco take on a Chic classic. But there's also a slowed-down but very groovy version of The Crusaders' hit 'Street Life', a really tight and soulful cover of Hot Chocolate, the traditional 'Misirlou' in nearly-cheesy disco fashion, a James Brown cover (there's always at least a cool one every year), Marvin Gaye revisited in punk-funk mode, or Lalo Schifrin on a worldbeat tip! We even cheated a bit since the last one, 'Mission Impossible' by Lizzy Mercier Descloux, extracted from a recent reissue of her 1979 album 'Press Color', was actually recorded at Carnegie Hall Studio in NY in 1980 — hinting at what's coming next : the 80s!! Tracklisting : 01. George Faith - Please Stay (from 'Soulfull' album, 1979 / Hollywood) BURT BACCARACH cover, more info on 02. Serge Gainsbourg - Vieille Canaille (from 'Aux Armes Et Cætera' album, 1979 / Philips) SAM THEARD cover, more info on 03. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1978 - Standards, Versions & Revamps Vol.19
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1978 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.19 (MP3 Podcast on ) 2016-04-17 Damn things are not getting easier as I'm approaching the 1980s. In 1978 there's just SO MUCH of disco in the groovy records. There's also a vast amount of punk and pop/rock released of course, but that's not really what we're about in this series of mixes here. 1978 was not that bad a year, I could list many classic albums out by the likes of Frank Zappa, Elvis Costello, Bob Marley, Little Feat, The Band, Talking Heads, Rick James, Kraftwerk, Herbie Hancock, Chic, Devo, The Clash or even Sun Ra, for example, but the main event is clearly happening on the P-Funk side of things, with great LPs from Funkadelic, Parliament, Brides Of Funkenstein, Parlet , Bernie Worrell or Bootsy Collins, all released in 1978. You'll feel it in this selection of cool covers from the year, which includes P-Funk spin off act Parlet covering Parliament-Funkadelic vocalist Fuzzy Haskins' "Cookie Jar" (later recorded by Prince), R&B/soul group The Dells covering Parliament's "All Your Goodies Are Gone", and funk band Platinum Hook covering Funkadelic's "Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On". Definitively, 1978 was the year of the P!! Tracklisting : 01. Soul Children - Signed, Sealed, Delivered (from 'Can't Give Up A Good Thing' 7 inch, 1978 / Stax) STEVIE WONDER cover, more info on 02. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1977 - Standards, Versions & Revamps Vol.18
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1977 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.18 (MP3 Podcast on ) 2016-04-18 1977 was the year of the Punk explosion, but it was also the year the famous Studio 54 opened in New York. Elvis Presley died during the summer, Marc Bolan followed in september, and "Saturday Night Fever" was released at the end of the year. On the albums front, besides the obvious P-Funk gems (Parliament, Bootsy Collins, Eddie Hazel), there were Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, The Clash, Kraftwerk, The Talking Heads and Bob Marley. The times were A-changing once again… As for album, cool covers were getting scarce and Kiss was the most popular band in the USA. But that didn't stop us from gathering a full hour of handpicked funky and soulful versions of classics, all released during 1977!! Tracklisting : 01. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1976 - Standards, Versions & Revamps Vol.17
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1976 - Standards, Versions and Revamps Vol.17 (MP3 Podcast on ) 2016-04-05 Some say that 1976 wasn't the best year for music. They might be forgetting many great recordings from the likes of Marvin Gaye ('I Want You'), Steely Dan ('The Royal Scam'), Grateful Dead ('Steal your Face'), Parliament ('The Clones Of Dr. Funkenstein'), Funkadelic ('Tales of Kidd Funkadelic', 'Hardcore Jollies'), Led Zeppelin ('The Song Remains The Same'), Zappa ('Zoot Allures'), Stevie Wonder ('Songs In The Key Of Life'), Bootsy Collins ('Stretchin Out In Bootsy's Rubber Band')... It was also the year punk incubated and rap was created. Disco was everywhere and not only in clubs anymore, but reggae had also become extremely popular, and many classic records in the genre were released, for example by Burning Spear ('Garvey's Ghost', 'Man In The Hills'), Bob Marley and The Wailers ('Rastaman Vibration'), Bunny Wailer ('Blackheart Man') or Lee Perry and The Upsetters ('Super Ape')... If 1976 wasn't the best, and yes there is a lot to forget, it was still a very cool year to dig for music! Tracklisting : 01. Paris DJs Soundsystem - African Mashed Potato Popcorn Vol.10
Paris DJs Soundsystem African Mashed Potato Popcorn Vol.10 - When Afrobeat Meets Jazz (MP3 Podcast on ) 2016-03-14 This mix was cooked with only one person in mind: Collen Chandler, from Liverpool, who supported our 15 CDs anthology crowdfunding campaign and asked us to try on a when afrobeat meets jazz theme, mixing the modern & old with an emphasis on the modern. While preparing the selection, we found out this new mix fitted perfectly our decade-old 'African Mashed Potato Popcorn' series! Thankfully, Collen loved the mix, and let us share it with the rest of the world, so here's a new selection of African and African-influenced grooves from the past and the present. You might recognize some familiar faces, Dexter Story who came to DJ with us recently in Paris, Karl Hector who's done a handful of exclusive mixes for Paris DJs, a production from his brother on his own Philophon label, German singstress Bajka who've we been heavily supporting along the years, Berlin afrojazzfunksters Onom Agemo & The Disco Jumpers who first appeared on a Paris DJs compilation, Black Flower's afrojazz from Belgium, led by our friend Nathan Daems, the amazing Golden Dawn Arkestra from Austin, Texas, produced by Adrian Quesada, NYC's afrofunksters Ikebe Shakedown, or Dr. Lonnie Smith, who's back 45 years later on Blue Note with a truly great album….
