Court Victory! $6.2 Million Restored in Lambda Legal’s Big Win for LGBTQ+ & HIV Orgs - July 21, 2025
Family, this is your favorite queer radio personality Anna DeShawn and you’re listening to Queer News, your weekly pod where race & sexuality meet politics, culture, and entertainment. Only on E3 Radio. This week, I’m coming to you with a heart full of gratitude and a story full of hope. Amidst a chaotic week caring for my family, a bright moment stopped me in my tracks: Lambda Legal won a massive legal victory that restored $6.2 million in funding to LGBTQ+ and HIV organizations. I knew we had to talk about it. So I sat down with Jose Abrigo, Lambda’s HIV Project Director, to break it all down. Because even when the world feels heavy, there’s still good news worth celebrating. We honor Jewel Thais-Williams, Wisconsin moves to ban conversion therapy, and BET+ brings ballroom to television - July 14, 2025
Episode Description: Family, this week on Queer News, Anna DeShawn honors the life of Jewel Thais-Williams, a Black lesbian pioneer who built spaces that saved our lives. In politics, Wisconsin’s Supreme Court clears the way to finally ban conversion therapy, while a sobering new report reveals foundation funding for LGBTQ+ causes has plummeted nearly 20%. In culture & entertainment, Artis restaurant keeps fighting to stay open, American Airlines refuses to back down under conservative pressure, and BET+ debuts House on Fire, a docuseries spotlighting the legendary House of Miyake Mugler. Her club became a refuge for Black, Brown, trans, and queer people during a time of police raids and exclusion. Beyond nightlife, she founded the Minority AIDS Project, opened Rue’s House for women and children living with HIV/AIDS, and brought holistic health care to underrepresented communities. Jewel passed away at 86, but her legacy of love, resistance, and safe spaces lives on. 📉 Funding for LGBTQ+ Organizations Plummets A new report from Funders for LGBTQ Issues shows foundation support dropped nearly 20% in 2023 — about $49 million. Factoring in inflation, it’s closer to 22%. Funding for Black LGBTQ+ communities fell by 41%, for trans communities by 24%, and for youth by 42%. Major funders even chose to stay anonymous for fear of federal backlash. It’s a reminder: our liberation needs resources, and sometimes, as history shows, we have to save ourselves. ⚖️ Wisconsin Supreme Court Clears Path to Ban Conversion Therapy In a 4–3 ruling, Wisconsin’s Supreme Court stopped lawmakers from blocking a ban on conversion therapy, calling out the Legislature’s overreach. This decision not only protects LGBTQ+ youth but also strengthens the executive branch’s power to enact protections in areas like public health and the environment. A reminder that our fight isn’t only cultural, it’s structural. Culture & Entertainment 🍽️ Artis Restaurant Still Fighting to Stay Open After the tragic shooting outside Artis, a Black lesbian-owned restaurant, the owners are fighting aldermanic efforts to close them down. They’re asking us to call the alderman’s office and support them, and there’s also a to help cover mounting business costs while they can’t operate. Our safe spaces matter — and they deserve to stay. ✈️ American Airlines Refuses to Fold Under Pressure Conservatives tried to pressure American Airlines into leaving the Human Rights Campaign’s Equality Index, claiming inclusion hurts business. But the airline’s shareholders overwhelmingly rejected that idea, and the board doubled down on their commitment to LGBTQ+ employees and customers, including sponsoring Dallas Pride again this year. 🏠 BET+ Debuts House on Fire The new docuseries follows the legendary House of Miyake Mugler, capturing the beauty, struggle, and truth of ballroom culture. For many networks, these stories felt “too risky,” but BET+ invested in telling them. As house members say, this visibility is a sign that change is happening — and it matters deeply to Black and Brown queer communities. 🌈✊🏾🏳️⚧️✨ 📣 Stay Connected Subscribe for news & queer deals: Queer News Newsletter, Follow Anna @annadeshawn on social for the latest queer news updates! Medicaid will no longer cover gender-affirming care, and birth certificates must match sex assigned at birth erasing visibility and safety for trans Iowans. 🩺 UPenn Erases Lia Thomas’ NCAA Titles Under Trump Pressure Facing threats to freeze $175 million in research funding, UPenn caved, stripping Lia Thomas’ titles and banning trans women athletes from women’s spaces. Advocates say this isn’t about fairness, but about erasure. 🕊️ Chyna Long’s Murdered is Sentenced in Milwaukee Two years after she was murdered, the man responsible has been sentenced to 50 years. Chyna’s family remembers her joy and truth, knowing nothing will bring her back but hoping this stops future violence. Culture & Entertainment 🏳️🌈 100,000 March in Budapest Pride, Defying Government Ban Despite threats, surveillance, and fines, LGBTQ+ Hungarians and allies marched in their largest Pride ever reminding the world that Pride began as resistance. 🍽️ Chicago’s Artis Restaurant Faces Closure After Mass Shooting After tragedy struck outside this Black lesbian-owned safe space, city officials push to close it down. The community is rallying to keep Artis’ doors open and protect what it stands for. 🎬 Noah’s Arc: The Movie Makes Streaming History The first all-Black gay film to break into Paramount+’s Top 10, proving again the hunger and need for authentic Black queer stories. 🌈✊🏾🏳️⚧️✨ 📣 Stay Connected Subscribe for news & queer deals: Queer News Newsletter, Follow Anna @annadeshawn on social for the latest queer news updates! The Supreme Court fails trans youth, NIH grant cuts ruled discriminatory, and Black queer joy shines in Noah’s Arc: The Movie - June 23, 2024

Skrmetti decision, which upholds Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors. We remember Taylor Casey, who disappeared one year ago in the Bahamas, and report on the Trump administration’s cruel move to defund the LGBTQ youth lifeline. Judge defends trans inmates’ rights, Native Son celebrates Black gay brilliance and drag entertainers crash Trump’s Kennedy Center debut - June 16, 2025
In this episode of Queer News, Anna breaks down one of the most significant legal wins for trans rights this year—a federal judge blocking Trump’s ban on gender-affirming care for incarcerated trans folks. We remember Laura Schueler, a beloved Black trans woman murdered in Cincinnati, and we honor the 49 lives lost at Pulse Nightclub nine years ago. Plus, we celebrate the power of protest and performance: four drag queens crashing Trump’s Kennedy Center return with defiance and dignity. A Special Pride Episode: Just Anna - Raw Reflections on Pride, Resistance & Rising Hate
In this special episode of Queer News, Anna drops the script and speaks directly from the heart. As Pride Month begins amidst a wave of political attacks, rising hate crimes, and corporate retreat, Anna reflects on the importance of joy as resistance and why we must never stop telling our stories. From celebrating her upcoming WorldPride panels in DC to spotlighting a heartbreaking hate crime in Illinois, this episode is raw, unfiltered, and full of fire. We also hear from contributor Jake Wittich of Windy City Times, who reports on a recent anti-LGBTQ hate crime in Illinois that’s rocked the local community. If you’re moved by the story, please consider donating to the survivor’s GoFundMe — the link is in the show notes. This is not just news — this is truth-telling, soul-centering, and community care. This historic vote marks the first step in a broader effort to bring state law in line with constitutional protections for LGBTQ+ people. 📚 Victory in Iowa: Blocking the “Don’t Say Gay” Clone Iowa activists and legal advocates have successfully blocked several key components of SF 496—a bill modeled after Florida’s "Don’t Say Gay" law. This is a powerful win for students, families, and educators across the state. 🕯️ Justice for Jazlynn Johnson: A Mother’s Mission A year after the tragic loss of 18-year-old trans woman Jazlynn Johnson, her mother Susan provides a heartfelt update on the case. The shooter has been sentenced, but Susan’s journey continues as she turns her grief into action by launching Jazlynn’s Legacy, a scholarship and advocacy effort for families affected by violence. 🎭 Culture & Entertainment 🏆 Scott Evans Wins a Webby: House Guest Gets Its Flowers Emmy-nominated journalist and host Scott Evans secures a Webby Award for his series House Guest. With engaging interviews and authentic storytelling, Scott is representing Black queer excellence on national platforms—and we are here for it. 🗞️ Windy City Times x Queer News: Media Collaboration in Action Our growing partnership with Windy City Times kicks off with contributor stories from Jake Witich and Jerry Nunn, covering Brave Space Alliance’s “Partners in Dignity” gala and the Critics Choice LGBTQ+ TV & Cinema celebration. This is a major milestone in media representation. 💔 Sending Love to Big Freedia We close this week honoring Big Freedia, who recently lost her partner of 20 years, Devon Hurst, to complications from diabetes. Trans servicemembers get a win, Laverne Cox’s Clean Slate gets canceled and the LA Sparks will retire Candace Parker’s jersey - April 21, 2025
This week on Queer News with Anna DeShawn — we’re talking legal wins and loses, representation on-screen, and unmatched excellence on the basketball court. A U.S. federal appeals court deals a blow to Trump’s anti-trans military ban, affirming the right of our trans siblings to serve with pride. But across the pond, the UK Supreme Court drops a devastating ruling stripping trans people of legal recognition. In culture, we lift up the groundbreaking TLC show Jay & Pamela — a love story breaking barriers around disability, queerness, and visibility. We mourn the cancellation of Clean Slate, Laverne Cox’s bold sitcom, and celebrate WNBA icon Candace Parker as the LA Sparks announce her jersey retirement this Pride Month. And to close, we honor Black lesbian poet Pat Parker for Lesbian Visibility Week with her searing classic, my lover is a woman. This episode is a ride through pain, pride, power — and the poetry that keeps us grounded. Let’s get into it, family. 💜🏳️🌈 🏛️ Politics 9th Circuit Court Blocks Trump-Era Trans Military Ban Federal appeals court upholds preliminary injunction, allowing trans servicemembers to serve while the legal battle continues. UK Supreme Court Strips Trans People of Legal Recognition A devastating ruling ties legal gender strictly to birth sex, nullifying Gender Recognition Certificates and setting back trans rights. 🎭 Culture & Entertainment TLC’s Jay & Pamela Shines Bright in Disability & LGBTQ+ Representation A great new reality show follows a trans man and his fiancée as they navigate love, life, and layered identities. Prime Video Cancels Clean Slate, Starring Laverne Cox & George Wallace The heartfelt sitcom — Norman Lear’s final show — gets cut after just one season. LA Sparks to Retire Candace Parker’s Jersey During Pride Month The WNBA legend will be honored June 29th, solidifying her place in history as one of the game’s greats. ✊🏽 Anna’s Word Honoring Pat Parker for Lesbian Visibility Week Black lesbian poet and activist Pat Parker’s legacy lives on through her revolutionary work, including her iconic poem “my lover is a woman.” 🌈✊🏾🏳️⚧️✨ 00:00 - Welcome to Queer News 00:40 - Leave a Queer News Tip, Email info at e3radio.fm or leave a message here 01:08 - Join the QCrew, 01:38 - Queer News Headlines 02:14 - 9th Circuit Court Blocks Trump-Era Trans Military Ban 06:07 - UK Supreme Court Strips Trans People of Legal Recognition 13:30 - TLC’s Jay & Pamela Shines Bright in Disability & LGBTQ+ Representation 16:41 - Prime Video Cancels Clean Slate, Starring Laverne Cox & George Wallace 19:25 - LA Sparks to Retire Candace Parker’s Jersey During Pride Month 21:55 - Anna's Got A Word 📣 Stay Connected Subscribe for news & queer deals: Queer News Newsletter, Follow Anna @annadeshawn on social for the latest queer news updates! Celebrating political wins in Colorado, Anna named to The Curve Foundation 2025 Power List & NFL’s Khalen Saunders to host LGBTQ football camp - April 14, 2025
Family, this week we’re celebrating political wins in Colorado and Boise, shining a light on the Curve Foundation's Power List, and spotlighting NFL player Khalen Saunders for creating space in sports for LGBTQ athletes. From politics to pop culture, Anna brings the stories that matter to our community—amplified, unfiltered, and with plenty of heart. In Politics: Colorado Comes Through: The state House passes groundbreaking bills protecting gender-affirming care, shielding trans kids and their families, and recognizing abortion as a constitutional right. Boise Stands Tall: Despite Idaho’s ban on flying non-governmental flags, Boise Mayor Lauren McLean affirms the city will keep flying the Pride flag. The best part? The bill has no enforcement mechanism. Sometimes resistance is as simple as staying the course. In Culture & Entertainment: Curve Power List Honors Anna: That’s right — our very own Anna DeShawn made the 2025 Curve Power List! Shoutout to the Curve Foundation for recognizing LGBTQ+ women and nonbinary folks shaping culture and policy. What an honor to be listed among such icons. Chicago Tops Queer Travel Safety Index: Misterb&b names Chicago the #1 safest city for LGBTQ+ travelers in the U.S., beating out places like Seattle, San Francisco, and Honolulu. Come through, Chi-town! NFL Allyship in Action: Saints player Khalen Saunders is hosting a football camp for LGBTQ+ athletes in St. Louis, co-led by bisexual former Cowboy RK Russell. Saunders says being an ally means showing up — and he’s doing just that. GLAAD Awards on Hulu: Don’t forget to stream the 36th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, now on Hulu. Let’s celebrate those who tell our stories right. 💬 Community Shout-Out Royal’s TDOV Voice Note: We close out our Trans Day of Visibility series with Royal, reminding us all that you are right on time — no matter when you arrive. Thank you to the 21 voices who made our most listened-to episode of the year. 🌈✊🏾🏳️⚧️✨ 00:00 - Welcome to Queer News 01:43 - Leave a Queer News Tip, Email info at e3radio.fm or leave a message here 02:28 Join the QCrew, 03:27 Queer News Headlines 03:59 Colorado Comes Through 07:14 Boise Stands Tall 10:03 Curve Power List Honors Anna 13:22 Chicago Tops Queer Travel Safety Index 15:11 NFL Allyship in Action 18:08 Annas Got A Word 📣 Stay Connected Subscribe for news & queer deals: Queer News Newsletter, Follow Anna @annadeshawn on social for the latest queer news updates! This week, we’re turning up the volume on resistance and resilience. From nationwide “Hands Off” protests to major political wins in Wisconsin and Montana, the people are making their voices heard. We Speak Their Names: Linda Becerra Moran, a Latina trans woman in LA killed by police while in mental health crisis. Kaitoria “Kai” Bankz, a Black trans woman shot on Trans Day of Visibility in Alabama during a suspected setup. 🎭 In Culture & Entertainment: AIDSWatch 2025: Anna shares her powerful experience advocating on Capitol Hill with 560 advocates to fully fund HIV/AIDS services and Medicaid.
