The day it launched it became a #1 Amazon Best Seller in 2 categories; this podcast is designed to expand the conversation discussion of what it really takes to create, develop, and maintain a high performing organization. Results Driven Organizations podcast, will host curated conversations with C-Suite leaders and those who support organizational growth and development. Our conversations will be centered around my Results Driven Philosophy of Strategy, Leadership, Teams and Customer Experiences. The goal of this podcast is to create conversations that are: 1. For over a year now, I've been talking about the necessity of developing employees' skills and mindsets. But recently, after facilitating a meeting, I had a revelation that stopped me in my tracks, I mean, it hit me like a ton of bricks: leaders need to be upskilled and reskilled too. Think about it for a moment. How effective can an organization truly be if all its employees are growing and developing, but the leadership remains stagnant? It's like trying to sail a ship with a modern, high-tech crew but an outdated navigation system. Allow me to break this down further. In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, three key areas stand out as critical indicators that our leaders need developing too: critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and the ability to lead multigenerational teams. First, critical thinking. In an era of information overload and complex challenges, leaders must be able to analyze situations from multiple angles, make informed decisions, and solve problems creatively. Without these skills, how can they guide their teams through uncharted waters? Second, emotional intelligence. The days of the stoic, detached leader are long gone. Today's effective leaders need to understand and manage their own emotions while empathizing with others. EQ is a crucial skill for building strong relationships, motivating teams, and navigating the human aspects of organizational change. Third, let's consider the challenge of leading multigenerational teams. Today's workforce is more diverse than ever, with up to five generations working side by side. According to a 2020 Deloitte survey, 64% of business leaders cited managing a multigenerational workforce as a significant challenge. Each generation brings its own strengths, values, and communication styles to the table. Gen Z, the newest entrants to the workforce, are particularly reshaping workplace dynamics. Born between 1997 and 2012, they're expected to make up 27% of the workforce by 2025. A study by Dell Technologies found that 80% of Gen Z aspire to work with cutting-edge technology, and 91% say technology would influence their job choice. Moreover, a report by Glassdoor revealed that 77% of Gen Z workers value a company's diversity and inclusion initiatives when considering job offers. Our leaders need to be equipped with the skills to bridge these generational gaps, fostering understanding and collaboration across diverse teams. They need to know how to leverage the unique strengths of each generation while creating a cohesive team environment. For instance, harnessing Gen Z's digital nativity and desire for social impact can drive innovation and corporate social responsibility initiatives. However, a 2022 survey by Hibob found that 54% of HR professionals believe their managers struggle to lead multigenerational teams effectively. This underscores the urgent need for leadership development in this area. Leaders must learn to adapt their communication styles, mentoring approaches, and team-building strategies to cater to a diverse workforce. By upskilling our leaders in multigenerational leadership, we can create more inclusive, dynamic, and productive work environments. This not only improves team performance but also enhances employee satisfaction and retention across all generations. Leaders must be adept at bridging generational gaps, leveraging diverse perspectives, and creating inclusive environments where everyone can thrive. This requires a level of adaptability and cultural intelligence that many leaders may not naturally possess. So, what's the solution? It's time we expanded our focus on upskilling and reskilling to include your leadership. This means investing in leadership development programs that go beyond traditional management skills. Let’s create opportunities for leaders to challenge their assumptions, expand their emotional capacity, and gain practical experience in navigating the complexities of today's workforce. Imagine the potential of an organization where both employees and leaders are continuously growing and adapting. The synergy would be incredible. Teams would be more innovative, more resilient, and better equipped to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. As we continue to emphasize the importance of employee development, let's not forget the critical role that leadership plays in organizational success. Active Listening Exercise: For everyone: Practice the "HEAR" technique: Halt: Stop what you're doing and give full attention. Engage: Make eye contact and show you're listening. Anticipate: Look forward to what the speaker will say. Replay: Summarize what you've heard to ensure understanding. Try this in your next meeting or one-on-one conversation. Feedback Sandwich for Leaders: When giving feedback, use the sandwich method: Start with a positive observation. Address the area for improvement. End with an encouraging statement or another positive point. Example: "Your presentation was well-researched. I'd like to see more eye contact with the audience. Overall, your delivery is improving significantly." "I" Statements for Team Members: When expressing concerns, use "I" statements to avoid sounding accusatory: Instead of: "You never listen to my ideas." Try: "I feel frustrated when I don't have the opportunity to share my ideas fully." Practice crafting "I" statements about a current work situation. Question Framing Exercise: For leaders: Instead of asking "Why didn't you finish the project?", try "What obstacles are preventing the project's completion?" For team members: Instead of saying "This won't work," ask "How can we modify this to achieve our goals?" Practice reframing three common workplace questions or statements. Empathy Mapping: Create an empathy map for a colleague or team member: What are they thinking and feeling? What are they seeing and hearing in their role? What are their pain points and potential gains? This exercise can help both leaders and team members understand different perspectives. Non-Verbal Communication Awareness: For one day, pay close attention to your non-verbal cues: Body posture Facial expressions Tone of voice Gestures Reflect on how these might be perceived by others and adjust accordingly. Clear Expectation Setting: Leaders: Use the SMART criteria (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) to set clear expectations for a current project. Team members: Write down your understanding of your role and responsibilities, then compare with your manager's view. Appreciation Circle: In your next team meeting, have each person express genuine appreciation for another team member's recent contribution. Conflict Resolution Role-Play: With a colleague, role-play a difficult conversation: Person A presents a concern Person B practices active listening and empathy Together, brainstorm solutions Switch roles and repeat Communication Style Assessment: Take a communication style assessment (like DISC) and discuss the results with your team.
