The greatest adventures rarely start out intentionally. They begin with a simple idea. They are debated. Inevitably someone will say it's impossible, it can't be done, and whoever attempts it will surely perish from the effort. Once the impossibility has been decided there always seems to be one man - one dumb man, who sets out to defy the odds (usually to impress a girl) and will risk his life to do so (and hopes that she's watching). The best stories aren't always fiction. Before we begin I would remind you - this actually happened.

Newly emancipated Blacks used their labor to buy farmland, start businesses, and provide for their families. In addition, they became literate and built successful communities all during the time of the lynching, mob violence, segregation, and political backstabbing. A look at our history shows a series of accomplishments that our current generation hears little of. With this podcast, we are going to connect our present circumstances with the successes and failures of our past. The future ascendency of our community will be much greater when our collective minds are guided by lessons of our past. We have many great success lessons to build upon.

The Detroit History Podcast returns for Season Six with a menu of programs as diverse as wrestling, bebop jazz, and a failed automobile. We'll look at the life of The Sheik, who threw fire and terrorized fellow grapplers during his wrestling career, which peaked in the 1960s and beyond. We saw something different on the road while we prepped for Season Six: an Edsel, which was the biggest flop in automotive history when it was introduced in 1957. We wanted to know: how could the smart people at Ford Motor Company fail in such a big way? We'll hear about the Bluebird Inn, a west side jazz club where Miles Davis played in 1953 and 1954. And we'll explain how the Detroit Institute of Arts grew in the 1920s, acquiring priceless Van Gogh paintings at a time when nobody knew who he was. New episodes drop every Sunday night at 8.

America was forged. From nothing came everything we believe in. But the America our grandparents once knew is not the America we now know. Pete Roberts explores how our ancestors used their minds, hands and daylight to build this great nation. Have you forgotten your history? Have you forgotten that you and me, men and women are the ones who drive true change. Have you forgotten that our independence was won through the sacrifice of our ancestors. That what we have is the sum of their works. A movement of the people is the true power we have. But the greatest legacy they left is not the bridges and buildings, it's this thing we call Freedom. That unified we can move mountains. It's not business as usual, Pete builds parallels between the past, the present and the future. He discusses how to reconstruct the grit, values, and work ethic through his personal experiences and of those who have been there.
