Today I’m talking with Judy Graham. She’s the founder of WomenHood, where she provides specialist support for women who are childless not by choice. 20% of Australian women do not have children when they reach midlife, or the end of their reproductive years. For many women, not having children involves deep sadness, and can really rock their sense of identity and belonging. When society has such a strong emphasis on motherhood, women without children often say that their friendships and relationships are also impacted by their situation; that friends and family often don't really...

Menopause, by definition, is one point in a continuum of life stages for a woman and marks the end of their reproductive years and most women experience menopause between the ages of 45 and 55 years of age (World Health Organisation). 20% of Australian women do not have children when they reach midlife, or the end of their reproductive years. For many women, not having children involves deep sadness, and can really rock their sense of identity and belonging. When society has such a strong emphasis on motherhood, women without children often say that their friendships and relationships are also impacted by their situation; that friends and family often don't really understand, and so they grieve their losses silently.
If you’re like me, and you’re shocked to hear that 20% of women - our friends, colleagues and family members - don’t have children and may be feeling isolated with their experience, then please listen in, because this is a conversation about women supporting women and making the invisible, visible.
Please leave a review or direct message me with comments or suggestions. I would love to hear from you.
