EX CH 6

 

1But the Lord said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will send them out, and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land.”  WHEN I’M FINISHED WITH EGYPT PHAROAH WON’T JUST LET YOU GO, HE WILL DRIVE YOU FROM THE LAND

 

2God spoke to Moses and said to him, “I am the Lord. 3I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself known to them.  SEE EX 3:14 HE WHO CAUSES THINGS TO BE/EXIST … NAMES OF GOD WHICH DON’T DEFINE HIM BUT DESCRIBE WHAT HE’S DOING, IN THIS CASE WHAT GOD IS DOING IN EGYPT IS DIFFERENT FROM WHAT HE DID WITH ABRAHAM, ISAAC AND JACOB; “I TOLD ABRAHAM, ISAAC AND JACOB I WOULD MAKE THEIR DESCENDANTS LIKE THE SAND OF THE SEA AND GIVE THEM THE LAND OF CANAAN, BUT THEY DIDN’T SEE ME DO IT … NOW YOU, MOSES/AARON/ISRAEL, WILL SEE ME DO IT AND YOU WILL KNOW THAT I AM THE LORD/YAHWEH.  THINK OF ALL THE TIMES IN THE BIBLE WHERE GOD SAYS AFTER I HAVE DONE ____; “THEN THEY WILL KNOW THAT I AM YAHWEH” 

 

4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land in which they lived as sojourners. 5Moreover, I have heard the groaning of the people of Israel whom the Egyptians hold as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant. 6Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will deliver you from slavery to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment. 7I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8I will bring you into the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. I will give it to you for a possession. I am the Lord.’” 9Moses spoke thus to the people of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses, because of their broken spirit and harsh slavery.  THE ISRAELITES BELIEVED AND WORSHIPPED WHEN MOSES AND AARON FIRST SHOWED THEM THE MIRACULOUS SIGNS … THEY’RE NOW OVERTAKEN BY THEIR DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES AND RESIST GOD’S DELIVERANCE, ALSO, REMEMBER EZEK CH 20 WHERE GOD REVEALS THAT THE PEOPLE HAD BECOME IDOLATORS WHILE IN EGYPT AND RESISTED THE LORD EVEN BEFORE THE EXODUS BEGAN.  BACK TO MOSES

 

10So the Lord said to Moses, 11“Go in, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the people of Israel go out of his land.”  GET BACK TO WORK, MOSES!  12But Moses said to the Lord, “Behold, the people of Israel have not listened to me. How then shall Pharaoh listen to me, for I am of uncircumcised lips?”  CIRCUMCISION WAS ON MOSES’ MIND AFTER THAT INCIDENT WITH ON THE ROAD WITH ZIPPORAH! 13But the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron and gave them a charge about the people of Israel and about Pharaoh king of Egypt: to bring the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt. GET BACK TO WORK!

 

EXODUS NOW GIVES US A MINI-CENSUS.  ISRAEL IS ORGANIZED BY FAMILIES, CLANS & TRIBES

14These are the heads of their fathers’ houses: the sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi; these are the clans of Reuben. 15The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of a Canaanite woman; these are the clans of Simeon. 16These are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari, the years of the life of Levi being 137 years.  EXODUS NOW BREAKS DOWN THE TRIBE OF LEVI, MOSES & AARON’S TRIBE, INTO GREATER DETAIL 17The sons of Gershon: Libni and Shimei, by their clans. 18The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, the years of the life of Kohath being 133 years. 19The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. These are the clans of the Levites according to their generations.  NOW EXODUS GOES INTO EVEN GREATER DETAIL TO BRING US TO MOSES AND AARON’S FAMILY 20Amram took as his wife Jochebed his father’s sister, and she bore him Aaron and Moses, the years of the life of Amram being 137 years.  MIRIAM WAS NOT LISTED HERE.

 

21The sons of Izhar: Korah, Nepheg, and Zichri. 22The sons of Uzziel: Mishael, Elzaphan, and Sithri. 23Aaron took as his wife Elisheba, the daughter of Amminadab and the sister of Nahshon, and she bore him Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 24The sons of Korah A MAJOR BAD-GUY DURING THE EXODUS WHO ALSO HAPPENED TO BE A LEVITE: Assir, Elkanah, and Abiasaph; these are the clans of the Korahites. 25Eleazar, Aaron’s son, took as his wife one of the daughters of Putiel (HEBREW “PUT” A LOCATION IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF LIBYA WHERE PEOPLE WERE BLACK SKINNED) and she bore him Phinehas (TRANSLITERATION OF EGYPTIAN PIN-E-HAS, WHICH LITERALLY MEANS BLACK-SKINNED ONE).  SO, ELEAZAR WILL BECOME THE SECOND HIGH PRIEST AFTER AARON DIES, THEN HIS SON, PHINEAS (BLACK-SKINNED ONE) BECOMES THE THIRD HIGH PRIEST … AND IS A MAJOR CHARACTER AT THE END OF THE EXODUS.   

 

A NOTE FROM WIKIPEDIA ABOUT ELEAZAR: Displeased with the immorality with which the Moabites and Midianites had successfully tempted the Israelites (Numbers 25:1–9) to inter-marry and to worship Baal-peor, Phinehas personally executed an Israelite man and a Midianite woman while they were together in the man's tent, running a javelin or spear through the man and the belly of the woman, bringing to an end the plague sent by Yahweh to punish the Israelites for sexually intermingling with the Midianites.

 

Phinehas is commended by Yahweh in Numbers 25:10–13, as well as King David in Psalm 106 (Psalms 106:28–31) for having stopped Israel's fall into idolatrous practices brought in by Midianite women, as well as for stopping the desecration of Yahweh's sanctuary. After the entry to the land of Israel and the death of his father, he was appointed the third High Priest of Israel, and served at the sanctuary of Bethel (Judges 20:28).

 

KEEP IN MIND THAT AS THE NATION OF ISRAEL WAS GROWING IN EGYPT THEY WERE INTERMARRYING WITH GENETICALLY DIVERSE NON-ISRAELITE PEOPLE WHO ALSO LIVED IN EGYPT AND THAT INCLUDED BLACKS, ASIANS, ETC … AND ALL OF THEIR OFFSPRING WERE INCLUDED AS PART OF ISRAEL … THE NATION WAS GROWING … AND ONCE YOU’RE AN ISRAELITE, EVEN BY MARRIAGE, THEN THE PROMISES GIVEN TO ABRAHAM, ISAAC AND JACOB ALSO BELONG TO YOU … THE STRICT RESTRICTION ON MARRYING NON-ISRAELITES COMES MUCH LATER AFTER THE BABLYLONIAN EXILE WHEN THE PEOPLE ARE RETURNING TO ISRAEL WHERE NON-BELIEVERS WERE INHABITING THE LAND.  AT THE BEGINNING OF THE EXODUS ISRAEL WAS GENETICALLY DIVERSE AND AFTER THE LAW WAS GIVEN THERE WAS A PROCESS THAT A “SOJOURNER” COULD FOLLOW TO OFFICIALLY JOIN THE NATION.

 

BACK TO v25 … These are the heads of the fathers’ houses of the Levites by their clans.26These are the Aaron and Moses to whom the Lord said: “Bring out the people of Israel from the land of Egypt by their hosts.” 27It was they who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt about bringing out the people of Israel from Egypt, this Moses and this Aaron.  THE MINI CENSUS DOES NOT CONTINUE AFTER MOSES AND AARON’S LINEAGE IS DETAILED, NOTE THAT REUBEN AND SIMEON’S LINEAGE WAS LISTED BECAUSE THEY WERE THE OLDER BROTHERS OF LEVI.

 

28On the day when the Lord spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt, 29the Lord said to Moses, “I am the Lord; tell Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I say to you.” 30But Moses said to the Lord, “Behold, I am of uncircumcised lips. How will Pharaoh listen to me?”
