Exodus Chapter 7 Deep-Dive: God Confronts Pharoah

EX CH7

1And the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron shall be your prophet. REMEMBER, THIS WAS NOT GOD’S ORIGINAL PLAN, AGAIN WE SEE GOD INTERACTING WITH HIS CREATION AND CHANGING HIS PLAN DUE TO MOSES’ REACTION 2You shall speak all that I command you, and your brother Aaron shall tell Pharaoh to let the people of Israel go out of his land. 3But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I multiply my signs and wonders in the land of Egypt, 4Pharaoh will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and bring my hosts, my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great acts of judgment. GOD IS PREPARING MOSES FOR THE PUSHBACK HE WILL RECEIVE FROM PHAROAH … HE KNOWS THAT MOSES IS EASILY DISCOURAGED … JUST BE FAITHFUL, MOSES, AND WORK THE PLAN … YOU’RE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RESULTS, I AM… 5The Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, YAHWEH/HE WHO CAUSES THINGS TO BE when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring out the people of Israel from among them.” IT’S THE SUCCESSFUL DEED OF BRINGING THE PEOPLE OUT THAT WILL CAUSE THE EGYPTIANS TO KNOW THAT YAHWEH IS HE WHO CAUSES THINGS TO EXIST. 

THE MIRACLES / SIGNS PORTION OF THE EXODUS BEGIN AT THIS POINT.  LET’S STOP AND REVIEW THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD UP TO THAT TIME:

CREATION & FALL OF MAN … REBELLION OF MAN & HEAVENLY BEINGS

THE FLOOD … EVERYONE KILLED BY GOD, EXCEPT, THAT GOD REFINES HUMANITY DOWN TO THE FAMILY OF NOAH WHERE 1 OF 3 BROTHERS IS A REBEL

THE TOWER OF BABEL … CONTINUED REBELLION, GOD CREATES LANGUAGES TO DIVIDE & SLOW DOWN HUMANITY’S DESCENT INTO FURTHER EVIL THEN TURNS THESE NEW LANGUAGE GROUPS OVER TO BE ADMINISTERED BY DIVINE HEAVENLY BEINGS Deut 32: 8When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind, he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God/DIVINE-HEAVENLY BEINGS.

GOD CHOOSES ABRAHAM & PROMISES TO MAKE A GREAT NATION OUT OF HIM, A NATION THAT WILL BE GOD’S PERSONAL NATION … ISRAEL, MY FIRSTBORN SON.

WORLDWIDE FAMINE ENDS THE BRONZE AGE AND DRIVES PEOPLES TO EGYPT WHERE JOSEPH IS SAVING HUMANITY … ABRAHAM’S SEED WHICH HAS GROWN INTO JACOB AND HIS 12 SONS (70 PEOPLE) ARE PLANTED IN EGYPT

400 YEARS AFTER THE WORLDWIDE FAMINE HUMANITY HAS REGRESSED INTO THE IRON AGE LIMITING THE ABILITY TO CREATE LARGE NATIONS/ARMIES, AND ISRAEL HAS GROWN TO ABOUT 1.5 MILLION PEOPLE WHO ARE NOW ENSLAVED BY THE EGYPTIANS

THE EXODUS WILL BE THE NEXT MIRACULOUS WORLD-WIDE EVENT DONE BY GOD … HOW IS IT WORLDWIDE?  THE SIGNS & MIRACLES DONE IN EGYPT ARE THERE FOR EVERYONE TO SEE … IMAGINE VISITING EGYPT IN A TRADING CARAVAN WHILE THOSE SIGNS ARE GOING ON AND BEING AFFECTED BY THEM … WATER TO BLOOD, FROGS, GNATS, DARKNESS, DEADLY HAIL, THE DEATH OF EGYPTIAN FIRSTBORN, THEN THE SPLITTING OF THE RED SEA … THEN RETURNING TO YOUR HOME COUNTRY AND SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT WHAT WAS GOING ON IN EGYPT.  CONSIDER WHAT RAHAB THE HARLOT SAID TO THE ISRAELITE SPIES AS THE NATION IS ENTERING THE PROMISED LAND 42 YEARS AFTER THE EXODUS BEGAN Josh 2:8 8Before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof 9and said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. 10For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt,(42 YEARS AGO) and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction.(A FEW MONTHS AGO) 11And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.

SO, THE EXODUS IS GOD SHOOTING OFF MIRACULOUS SUPERNATURAL FIREWORKS … ONLY GOD COULD DO THOSE THINGS … THE ONE TRUE GOD, GOD OVER THE EGYPTIAN GODS … AND HE’S NOW BRINGING FORTH HIS NATION AND PRESENTING IT TO THE WORLD.  DON’T BE DECEIVED BY THE FACT THAT THE EXODUS TOOK PLACE IN THE LIGHTLY POPULATED SINAI PENINSULA … THE WORLD KNEW WHAT WAS GOING ON.

SO, CREATION & FALL, WORLDWIDE FLOOD & NOAH, BABEL & ABRAHM, WORLDWIDE FAMINE & EGYPT/FALSE GODS VS ISRAEL/YAHWEH … GOD CONTROLS EVERYTHING AND ALL CIRCUMSTANCES TO WORK HIS WILL

ONE FINAL THOUGHT … THIS IS NOT GOOD PEOPLE VS BAD PEOPLE, ISRAELITES VS EGYPTIANS … THE ISRAELITES WERE JUST AS “MORALLY BAD” AS THE EGYPTIANS … EZ CH 20 EXPLANS THAT … THE ISRAELITES WERE IDOLATORS STEEPED IN EGYPTIAN CULTURE, THE DIFFERNCE IS THAT ISRAEL IS YAHWEH’S NATION, AND EGYPT IS THE NATION OF THE FALSE GODS.  EZ CH 20 EXPLAINS WHY THE EXODUS TOOK PLACE … Ez 20:9 But I YAHWEH acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations among whom they lived, in whose sight I made myself known to them in bringing them out of the land of Egypt. 10So I led them out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness. 

Acts 17:24 PAUL IN ATHENS SPEAKING TO THE GENTILE PHILOSOPHERS & USING HIS NEW COVENANT DECODER RING The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, 25nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. 26And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him.

OK, BACK TO MOSES IN EX CH 7

6Moses and Aaron did so; they did just as the Lord commanded them. 7Now Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron eighty-three years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh.  THIS IS MOSES’ THIRD ACT: 40 YRS AS PHAROAH’S GRANDSON TRAINED IN ALL THE WISDOM OF EGYPT, 40 YRS AS A HUMBLE SHEPHERD FOR HIS FATHER IN LAW JETHRO, THE PRIEST OF MIDIAN, NOW … CALLED BY GOD TO LEAD HIS PEOPLE OUT OF EGYPT … TRAINED AS AN EGYPTIAN NOBLE, AND, AS A SHEPHERD …

8Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 9“When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Prove yourselves by working a miracle,’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and cast it down before Pharaoh, that it may become a serpent.’” 10So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron cast down his staff before Pharaoh and his servants, and it became a serpent. 11Then Pharaoh summoned the wise men and the sorcerers, and they, the magicians of Egypt, also did the same by their secret arts. 12For each man cast down his staff, and they became serpents. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. 13Still Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them, as the Lord had said. 

LET’S LOOK MORE DEEPLY AT THESE WISE MEN, SORCERERS AND MAGICIANS OF EGYPT.  REMEMBER, EGYPT IS PROBABLY THE OLDEST NATION ON EARTH AT THIS POINT PROBABLY CLOSE TO THE AGE OF BABEL / BABYLON (CODE OF HAMMURABI).  THERE HAD ALREADY BEEN AN OLD KINGDOM OF EGYPT, THEN A MIDDLE KINGDOM, AND NOW THE NEW KINGDOM WITH LARGE PERIODS OF TIME BETWEEN THEM.  EGYPTIAN WRITTEN LANGUAGE WAS HIEROGLYPICS - PICTOGRAPHIC … USING HUNDREDS OF SYMBOLS … THERE WAS NO ALPHABET. LEARNING TO READ WAS DIFFICULT AND MOSTLY LIMITED TO THESE PRIESTS SO THAT THEY COULD READ ANCIENT TEXTS FROM THE OLD & MIDDLE KINGDOMS.  PRIESTS IN THE ANCIENT WORLD WERE PRIMARILY TECHNICIANS, AND NOT SPIRITUAL REPRESENTATIVES … SACRIFICES TO THE GODS WERE DONE PRIMARILY BY HEADS OF HOUSEHOLDS, OR INDIVIDUALS, AND NOT BY PRIESTS.  THE CREATION OF THE ISRAELITE HIGH PRIEST AND PRIESTHOOD WAS A NEW INNOVATION INSTITUTED BY GOD IN THE ANCIENT WORLD.

SO, IF YOU WERE AN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN AND YOUR CROPS WERE FAILING YOU HAD TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT BECAUSE CROP FAILURE EQUALED STARVATION, SO, YOU WENT TO A PRIEST TO FIND OUT SPECIFICALLY WHAT SHOULD BE DONE … THEN YOU MADE THE SACRIFICE AS DIRECTED BY THE “EXPERT” PRIEST.  THOSE PRIESTS WERE ABLE TO READ AND REFER TO ALL THE RECORDED “WISDOM” OF EGYPT.  IN THE CASE OF PHAROAH AND MOSES WHEN MOSES DOES A SIGN OR MIRACLE THEN PHAROAH LOOKS TO THE WISE MEN, SORCERERS AND MAGICIANS FOR GUIDANCE BASED ON THE RECORDED “WISDOM” OF EGYPT … WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO TO FIX THIS?     

REMEMBER, THIS IS NOT GOOD GUYS/ISRAEL VS BAD GUYS/EGYPT … ISRAEL IS JUST AS BAD AS EGYPT AND AS BAD AS THE REST OF THE WORLD … GOD IS DOING THIS FOR PHAROAH, PHAROAH’S PRIESTS, EGYPT, ISRAEL AND THE WHOLE WORLD … SO THAT THEY MAY KNOW THAT I AM GOD!

KEEP IN MIND THE PEOPLE (INCLUDING PHAROAH HIMSELF), AND ALL OF HIS PRISTS BELIEVED THAT PHAROAH WAS THE EMBODIMENT OF THE EGYPTIAN GOD, HORUS, SON OF RA – THE SUN GOD.  PHAROAH EXISTED IN THE EARTHLY AND SPIRITUAL REALMS AND SO CONNECTED MAN WITH THE GODS.  PHAROAH’S JOB WAS TO MAINTAIN “MA’AT” THE PROPER REGULATION OF EVERYTHING; SLAVES STAY SLAVES, NOBLES STAY NOBLES, PLANTING & HAVEST DONE AT THE PROPER TIMES, PROPER SACRIFICES ARE MADE TO ALL OF THE GODS, EVERYTHING IN ITS PROPER PLACE, ETC., PHAROAH WAS RAISED TO BELIEVE THIS – IT’S INGRAINED IN HIM – PEOPLE OFFER SACRIFICES AND OBESCIENCE TO HIM, HIS PRIESTS & WISE MEN SUPPORT THIS VIEW … THE 10 PLAGUES WILL SEEK TO SHAKE PHAROAH LOOSE FROM THIS BELIEF … KEEP THAT IN MIND WHEN YOU CONSIDER PHAROAH’S HEART BECOMING HARDENED.  ALSO, THE CONCEPT “MA’AT” REQUIRED THAT WHEN MEN DIED THEIR HEARTS WOULD BE WEIGHED AGAINST “THE FEATHER OF MA’AT” AND IF THEIR HEART WAS HEAVIER THAN THE FEATHER THEN THEY WERE CONSIDERED TO BE IMMORAL AND WOULD BE CAST INTO ETERNAL DARKNESS.  SO, THE IDEA OF “HARDENING THE HEART” WAS A VERY EGYPTIAN WAY OF SAYING “DOING THE WRONG THING.”  THIS IS TIED IN WITH THE IDEA OF “CIRCUMCISING YOUR HEART” … AN EGYPTIAN IDEA THAT GOD USED, THROUGH MOSES, TO COMMUNICATE TO THE ISRAELITES WHO HAD JUST LEFT EGYPT … THEY WERE ALL FAMILIAR WITH “MA’AT” … THAT THEIR HEARTS MIGHT BE “HARD” OR SINFULLY RESISTANT TO GOD.

YAHWEH IS CLEARLY CONFRONTING ALL OF THE GODS OF EGYPT WITH THESE PLAGUES AND IS IN THE PROCESS OF PULLING THE RUG OUT FROM UNDER THE WAY HUMAN CULTURE FUNCTIONED TO THAT POINT … SO, IT’S PHAROAH’S JOB TO CONFRONT THE THREAT THAT MOSES AND AARON ARE GIVING HIM … THEY WANT TO DISRUPT “MA’AT AND LEAD THE HEBREWS OUT OF EGYPT … IMAGINE PHAROAH SAYING; “HEY, EGYPTIAN PRIESTS, WHAT SHOULD WE DO ABOUT THIS?”  IN THE MEANTIME, YAHWEH IS CAUSING WIDESPREAD FEAR AND PANIC WITH THESE CLEARLY SUPERNATURAL PLAGUES AND, CONSEQUENTLY … BECAUSE HE LOVES THE WORLD … GIVING EVERYONE AN OPPORTUNITY TO REPENT…  THE FEAR OF THE LORD IS THE BEGINNING OF WISDOM.

ONE NOTE ON THE GODS OF EGYPT … THE EGYPTIANS WORSHIPPED A LOT OF GODS AND HISTORICAL INFORMATION REGARDING THEM VARIES.  ANCIENT PEOPLES BELIEVED THAT MOST THINGS IN LIFE, GOOD & BAD, WERE RELATED TO THE “GODS”, BIBLEBONESANDLIGAMENTS IS FOCUSED ON HOW DIFFERENT PARTS OF SCRIPTURE FIT TOGETHER SO WE WON’T BE GOING INTO GREAT DETAIL ABOUT HOW EACH PLAGUE IS TIED TO A SPECIFIC EGYPTIAN GOD.

BACK TO EX 7 THE TEN PLAGUES … The First Plague: ALL Water Turned to Blood

14Then the Lord said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is hardened; he refuses to let the people go. 15Go to Pharaoh in the morning, as he is going out to the water. TO BATHE, REMEMBER, EGYPTIANS ARE OBSESSED WITH HYGIENE Stand on the bank of the Nile to meet him, and take in your hand the staff that turned into a serpent. 16And you shall say to him, ‘The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, sent me to you, saying, “Let my people go, that they may serve me in the wilderness.” But so far, you have not obeyed. 17Thus says the Lord, “By this you shall know that I am the Lord: behold, with the staff that is in my hand I will strike the water that is in the Nile, and it shall turn into blood. YAHWEH IS SAYING “I CONTROL THIS RIVER … I CAN BRING LIFE OR DEATH FROM IT … 18The fish in the Nile shall die, and the Nile will stink, and the Egyptians will grow weary of drinking water from the Nile.”’”  THE NILE WAS CENTRAL TO LIFE NOT ONLY IN EGYPT BUT FOR MUCH OF THE ANCIENT WORLD BECAUSE ALEXANDRIA SHIPPED A LOT OF GRAIN THROUGHOUT THE ROMAN EMPIRE … EGYPTIANS BELIEVED THAT THE NILE WAS, OR WAS INHABITED BY … A GOD, AND THAT LIFE LITERALLY CAME OUT OF THE NILE AS IN THE FIRST MEN CAME FROM THE NILE … BACK TO MOSES & AARON 19And the Lord said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their rivers, their canals, and their ponds, and all their pools of water, so that they may become blood, and there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, even in vessels of wood and in vessels of stone.’”

20Moses and Aaron did as the Lord commanded. In the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants he lifted up the staff and struck the water in the Nile, and all the water in the Nile turned into blood. 21And the fish in the Nile died, and the Nile stank, so that the Egyptians could not drink water from the Nile. There was blood throughout all the land of Egypt. 22But the magicians of Egypt did the same by their secret arts.  BUT THEY COULDN’T FIX IT!  So Pharaoh’s heart remained hardened, and he would not listen to them, as the Lord had said. 23Pharaoh turned and went into his house, and he did not take even this to heart. 24And all the Egyptians dug along the Nile for water to drink, for they could not drink the water of the Nile.

25Seven full days passed after the Lord had struck the Nile.  THE AMOUNT OF TIME YOU CAN LIVE WITHOUT FRESH WATER … AND THAT WILL END CH 7
