Research has shown that certain lifestyle factors can significantly lower the risk of breast cancer. Let's talk about three actionable steps you can take toward prevention.
The K.I.S.S. ~ Prevention is key!
One of the obvious things that must be done is your annual mammogram. Have you had yours yet? Because it's not obvious unless you do it. And for those who are wondering if it hurts, the answer is no. It can be a little uncomfortable. But for the most part, it's a slight discomfort to save your life. If you think of it that way, you can endure it for a few minutes.
So, let's look at some preventative ways.
1. Engage in regular physical activity: Regular exercise has been found to have a protective effect against breast cancer. According to a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, women who engaged in moderate to vigorous physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day had a lower risk of developing breast cancer compared to those who were less physically active. Physical activity not only helps in weight management but also reduces estrogen levels in the body, which can contribute to a reduced risk of breast cancer.
2. Maintain a healthy weight: Obesity has been linked with an increased risk of breast cancer, especially after menopause. Excess body weight can lead to increased estrogen production, which can fuel the growth of breast cells and potentially lead to cancer. By maintaining a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise, individuals can reduce their risk of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends following a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and limiting the intake of processed foods and sugary drinks.
3. Limit alcohol consumption: Numerous studies have shown that alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, even small amounts of alcohol can increase the risk. It is recommended to limit alcohol consumption to no more than one drink per day for women. By reducing alcohol intake, individuals can reduce their exposure to a known risk factor for breast cancer.
Adopting a healthy lifestyle can significantly reduce the risk of developing breast cancer. Engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and limiting alcohol consumption, and get your annual mammogram. These are simple yet effective steps that you can take to protect yourself.
