Addressing Firearm Injuries in Children and Teens

Target Audience
This activity is targeted toward primary care and pediatric healthcare providers and advanced providers.

Statement of Need
Firearm injuries are now the leading cause of death in persons 0-24 years old, surpassing auto accidents. Yet, providers may not consistently ask parents/guardians about firearm ownership as a part of the wellness/preventative exam. Or, they may not be comfortable addressing firearm ownership and safety. Research and statistics have concluded that children who live in a home with a firearm are at increased risk of death by suicide or unintentional injury compared with children who live in a home without firearms. This podcast will discuss the guidelines for safe gun ownership as well as effective communication strategies in addressing gun ownership with parents/guardians as well as adolescents. The American Academy of Pediatrics has issued guidelines for safe gun ownership that will be reviewed as well as guidelines for providers.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to:
  1. Discuss the epidemiology of firearm injuries in children.
  2. Discuss the current trends in intentional and unintentional firearm injuries in children.
  3. Describe effective strategies to discuss firearm safety with families.
  4. Review the evidence-based practices to reduce the risks of gun-related injuries to children and teens; including screening recommendations and firearm storage/safety.
