*Heads Up- This is a re-release episode going way back to episode 19 of the podcast. Please note in this episode there is use of ableist language where I reference the term ‘blind-spot.’ I am sorry for perpetuating harm by using this term. Below in the show notes are resources to help educate on ableism and ableist language. Please take a few minutes to do research on ableism as this is one step we can all take in creating a just and inclusive culture* _______________________________ I’m sure you’ve heard the expression “train people how to treat...

Today on the podcast I am talking about how "financial freedom" is a farce and a terrible money goal to have for yourself. While there may be variations on how one defines "financial freedom" for themselves- it's still quite common for most folks to have "zero debt" as a pre-requisite of "financial freedom." Put another way, this means you can't be financially free if you are paying back debt. And this my friend, is the problem. In fact, it's not just one problem- there are TWO problems with this definition. This is such a problematic concept...

Today on the podcast we are talking about the power of progress. We live in a society and culture that is very much results oriented. I think there is such a hyper-focus on outcomes, results, and goals that we can miss a lot the goodness that comes along the way. In this episode I also shared about a major podcast goal that took almost 2 years to complete. If I’d only focused on the goal I would have missed out on countless wins, learnings, aha moments, and goodness along the way. And life is too short to miss out on goodness! I will be covering...

Today on the podcast we are talking about the power of practicing radical self-advocacy. I call this radical because for many folks who have marginalized and intersectional identities, the practice of standing up for yourself can be a radical act within a society and culture that does not recognize the humanity and rights of all individuals. Practicing self-advocacy is a form of self-love and of self-care. For women and folks impacted by misogyny and sexism, there is a risk in practicing self-advocacy because we are socialized as girls and women to...

In some areas we are brimming with self-trust, and in other areas...not so much. And that's okay. The process of cultivating self-trust is a life-long practice. Because of this, it helps to be reminded that doubt is part of the human experience. This can include doubt and uncertainty when it comes to making decisions about money. When it comes to making money decisions, our thoughts and beliefs about money are guiding our actions. Money does not spend itself. Money does not save itself. Money does not invest itself. Money does not...

"On The Other Side Of Rest Is Flow" which is a quote and teaching I've learned from one of my friends and mentors Ixchel Lunar. I'm very excited to be back and releasing new episodes of the OutSpoken Girlfriend podcast. I thought that I was going to take a shorter vacation and be back on the mic in June...but here we are over halfway through July and this was the time I needed. Today is a behind the scenes episode. Slowing down created space for me to really pay attention to what was going on within me and to just rest. Here's the thing, although I was taking time off for...

Today I’m taking you behind the scenes on the podcast today. Join me as I share some “in real-time” challenges in front of me- and what I’m doing to embrace rest and reject perfectionism. Here’s a hint- awareness of the need for rest and relaxation does not immunity from the culture of relentless productivity. I encourage you to continue taking time for rest, for relaxation, for creativity, and to just BE. It can be difficult sometimes to take a break for yourself. When you care about others, when you are accustomed to being of service in some capacity to others- it may feel...

We live in a culture that rewards creativity and innovation for the purpose of consumption and profit. The economics of capitalism tells us we are creating value only when there is an economic gain tied to that creation. And in part, this what encourages folks to turn something they love doing, something they love CREATING into a side hustle or a business. This is when folks are told do something you love and you will never work a day in your life. Well this is the type of creativity we are NOT talking about on today's episode. We are not...

Today on the podcast I'm talking about the various falsehoods being promoted and upheld within the personal finance and personal development space. These are the falsehoods that infiltrate our minds and our hearts when it comes to money, debt, worth, value, purpose, and passion. These are the falsehoods that can bring up feelings of shame and doubt around how we think about ourselves and our efforts. These are the falsehoods that also spread misinformation about whose work in the world is treated with dignity and respect-and whose work in the world is...
info_outlineOn today's episode we are talking about money, expectations, and how to navigate both of these during the holiday season which here in the US really kicks off in late November through the month of December.
Expectations are something we all have and they definitely will come to the surface during the holiday season.
The key is to manage expectations in such a way where we are being true to ourselves and from that point of truth- we then can determine how best to manage the expectations of others.
Because it can get difficult when there is a wide gap between expectations and reality, and we see this come up a lot with money issues.
Listen to today’s episode to get insights on the following:
- How spending money has become intertwined and connected with the holiday season
- Why understanding this connectivity is important to managing expectations
- How marketing has influenced our culture as a society and within our family traditions
- How our brain chemistry can impact our spending behavior
- Why it’s important to understand the difference between our reality and our ideals
- How to make gift exchanging something you want to do- not something you feel obliged to do
Although in this episode I am focusing on money and expectations during the holiday season- the content I cover today can be applied to any circumstance that involves people, money, and expectations- so tune in!
Naomi
