Platinum vs Gold in Engagement Rings
Platinum Price / Oz $ 929.35 | Gold Price per Ounce $1,554.10
Pros of Platinum (vs Gold)
- Malleable, Finer craftsmanship
- Better jewelers work with platinum
- Hypo-allergenic
- Rarer than gold
- Hold value in spite of financial fears and turmoils
- Often considered a symbol of prestige
- Heavier and more durable than white gold
- Tends to look more expensive
- Develops a stunning Patina over time
Cons of Platinum
- Is significantly more expensive than white gold (even though it looks nearly identical)
- Will get scratched (and dull over time. Not everyone loves patina)
- Isn't yellow if you're looking for gold
- Not all jewelers are qualified to work with Platinum
Pros of Yellow Gold
- The most hypoallergenic of all the three gold colors. But not against Platinum
- Historically the most popular metal used for wedding and engagement bands
- The most malleable and easiest for jewelers to manipulate
- All jewelers can work with it
- Easily matched with diamonds of a lower color grade.
Ben's Opinion: If you are deciding between Platinum vs White Gold?
Antique History of Platinum and Gold
Up until 1900) Georgian, Victorian -> Only Yellow Gold and Silver
(1900 - 1910) Edwardian -> Mix of Platinum and Yellow Gold
Art Deco -> Just Platinum
(White Gold became commercially available as of 1912 in Pforzheim, Germany and gained popularity in the mid-to-late 1920s as a low-cost substitute for platinum)
Rant: Almost all real Art Deco is NOT made with White gold.
Rant: Very few high-class recent jewelry pieces are made from gold since platinum has been around...
Graff Pink, a rare 24.78 carat pink diamond -> Platinum
Hope Diamond 5.52-carat deep-blue diamond -> PLATINUM
