Enjoy Video Games!
This week we journey back to 1986 and celebrate the revolutionary release of The Legend of Zelda, created by Shigeru Miyamoto. Inspired by childhood exploration, fantasy literature, and a desire to let players discover secrets on their own, Zelda dropped players into Hyrule with no hand-holding and no instructions beyond a wooden sword and courage.
We relive dungeon bosses, secret bombable walls, cryptic old men, and the unforgettable music composed by Koji Kondo. From Aquamentus to Ganon, from Second Quest surprises to Silver Arrow victories, we explore why this game still resonates four decades later, and why sometimes the best adventures are the ones where nobody tells you what to do.
Have you played through all of The Legend of Zelda? Let us know! First person that emails me with the subject line, “You have acquired a sword!” will get a special mention on the show. Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to EnjoyStuff@RetroZap.com
