Show notes: In this week’s podcast I am excited to share my thoughts on another book I recently read The Plan: Manage Your Time Like a Lazy Genius by Kendra Adachi. I am a huge fan of Kendra’s podcast, books and how she is able to break down problems into manageable pieces. I never miss an episode so when the opportunity to be part of her book launch came up, I jumped right in. Executive functioning skills are something that I have struggled with my whole life. I am so glad I have women to help me learn time and project management while acknowledging the realities of being a woman, a mom, a business owner, a teacher all while having an ADHD brain.

EP 244: Fresh Starts in All of Life’s Transitions with Olivia Dreizen Howe
Show notes: This week has been a lot. Sunday morning I found myself unexpectedly crying for three hours trying to figure out why I felt so overwhelmed even though everyone in my family was doing so much invisible work. Things I discovered included that I had extroverted way too hard, that all things on a to do list do not carry the same emotional weight and my hate of 90+ degree weather was still very much felt. Monday couldn’t come soon enough. Thankfully I was able to connect with a kindred spirit to talk all about fresh starts. I definitely needed one. I love a do over more than most people because do overs are how I keep going in life. Olivia Dreizen Howell and her sister Jenny started a divorce registry three years ago when they both were in the midst of life changing break ups. When I first heard this concept I couldn’t believe someone hadn’t thought of it before. It makes so much sense! We shower brides and babies with gifts marking a new life transition, but what about all of the other life transitions: divorce, death, graduation, job loss. In today’s world of marrying later and cohabitation before marriage it seems like a lot of people go from one toaster as a single person to two toasters as a couple to one toaster during cohabitation or marriage to NO toaster when you split up. I’m just saying that the time we need a new toaster is likely not at the beginning of a marriage, but rather at the end. I knew I had to interview the brains behind this brilliant idea and also the woman who started that national conversation around women having privacy in the voting booth. If you’ve spent any time online where people are talking about post it notes in the bathroom encouraging Republican women to cross party lines to vote for Kamala Harris because that you vote is public, but who you vote for is private then you’ve seen Olivia’s viral idea in the wild. In this week’s episode I am sharing my conversation with Olivia about Fresh Starts, Voting Without Fear and how self-care is often the first thing to go when you are changing the world. In case you haven’t yet met… Olivia Dreizen Howell is Co-Founder and CEO of , a clinical hypnotherapist, neuro linguistic practitioner, certified life coach, and single mom. After her 2019 divorce, Olivia noticed that while society celebrates weddings and babies with registries, there’s little support for moments when people truly need to rebuild their lives, like divorce or job loss. This realization led her, alongside her sister Jenny Dreizen, to create Fresh Starts Registry, the first and only platform that helps people through life transitions by offering both expert guidance and essential home items. She is also the co-founder of the , dedicated to empowering Americans to vote safely. With a strong background in marketing and communications, Olivia has worked on global campaigns and TV shows, founded March Lion Media, and led social media efforts for brands, celebrities and TV shows. Since founding Fresh Starts, she co-hosts and produces A Fresh Story podcast and has written over 250 scripts to support people through life changes. Olivia has been featured in Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, and more. She’s also the founder of YentaList, a job-posting site, and uses her platform to support single parents, empower women, and advocate for mental health and emotional resilience. EP 243: A Pep Talk for Fall 2024
Show notes: I have been thinking a lot about where we were 6 months ago. I had barely been diagnosed with ADHD, we were still in limbo with a bunch of stuff with my kid, and all I wanted for my birthday was my best friend to still be alive so we celebrate our birthdays together like we did pre pandemic - eating our way through West Coast cities with our pal Jeannie and laughing all weekend. March is one of my big grief months and this one hit particularly hard. During that week I recorded a podcast called: . In that episode I talked about all things I want that can’t be bought at the mall: quality and affordable child care, paid parental leave, hell just parental leave, universal preschool. Those little social safety nets, oh I really mean economic issues that are standard in other countries around the world. (Go listen - you’ll be shocked how much maternity leave you get in Bulgaria). It was in that episode that I referred to participatory democracy as a group project. And people still laugh/ groan every time I say it. Many of us are still outraged by group projects. Maybe it is because you were stuck in a group with people you didn’t like or didn’t share interests with. Maybe it is because you were stuck in a group with people who didn’t care about the outcome and they didn’t do their part of the assignment. Maybe it is because you were stuck in a group with people who didn’t even understand the assignment and made zero effort to get it together for the good of the group. And you were stuck doing all the work. And everyone got the same grade. In this week’s episode I am sharing a Pep Talk for Fall 2024.

EP 241: Everything No One Tells You About Parenting a Disabled Child: Your Guide to the Essential Systems, Services, and Supports with author Kelley Coleman
Show notes: Happy back to school aka new year! While I love the fresh start energy of a new school year, it also brings a deep feeling of anxiety. Will the teacher like my kid? Will the teacher be fair? Will the other kids include mine and be kind to her? The second day of kindergarten was the first time I got a behavior call from school and I have spent every beginning of the school year since educating teachers and administrators about disabilities and disability rights within the public school system. We have had to learn about special education laws and disability rights all while raising our little firecracker. Sometimes I feel like the universe had this kid in mind for me because what else would explain my past work as a lobbyist, a public school teacher AND a coach? These jobs gave me the skills to go to bat on her behalf. But not all families have the time, money, expertise or experience to help their students. This is lonely work for parents of kids who don’t fall into the school system because of learning and thinking differences. A lot of times we parents share similar struggles as our kids. Between me and my husband we have 36 years of direct classroom experience. AND THIS IS STILL A MYSTERY. The education system needs help and no place is that more apparent than in special education. If your student needs an IEP or a 504, uses a wheelchair or other medical equipment or has ADHD you have to know a whole lot more stuff than parents who never deal with special education. The craziest part of this is so much of special education is settled law. It should be this hard to access services legally required for students under settled law, right? Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) guarantees students with disabilities free and appropriate education was passed in 1975 and updated in 2004. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was enacted in 1990 - 34 years ago. Why is this still such a struggle? <blood boils> I recently asked my friends, neighbors and former teacher colleagues what they wished everyone knew about special education. They came through… everyone feels like every single part of the system is set up to fail. I just discovered our school district has been under scrutiny since 2017 about their failure in special education. They have been involved in lawsuits and are just now trying to get it sorted. Needless to say I will be throwing in my two cents because this has been a shitshow. People who aren’t directly involved have no idea how much extra work we are all putting in trying to sort out a complicated and confusing process. It is a privilege to not have to advocate for your student. People who live this every day are exhausted and anxious because we all want the same thing for our kids: a quality education that will help them be lifelong learners. This isn’t the last you’ll be hearing from me about systemic changes in education, but I did want to share a resource I found. Of course I immediately checked this out from the library, devoured the contents and then reached out to the author to be a guest on the podcast. . Kelley Coleman is a feature film development executive turned author and advocate for parent caregivers and individuals with disabilities. Her book Everything No One Tells You About Parenting a Disabled Child: Your Guide to the Essential Systems, Services, and Supports draws upon over a decade of experience, including her own experience parenting a child with multiple disabilities. Kelley lives in Los Angeles with her husband, two boys, and her son’s trusty service dog. Who can you share this episode with? Does anyone you know know a student with thinking and learning differences like ADHD, autism, dyslexia or other learning difficulties? Do you know a family that has visible disabilities? Do you know a teacher, principal or school board member? Please pass it on.

EP 239: ⚡️⚡️Absolutely Electrifying⚡️⚡️
Show notes: Have you been tuning in to the DNC this week? I am utterly stunned because we have never seen anything like this before. Politics is usually stuffy and boring. Not this year. The energy is absolutely electrifying! I am absolutely delighted with every speech. The roll call with a DJ and the playlist for every state? Perfection. Streaming the convention on YouTube and Tiktok equals no commentary to get in the way of the goodness. The Democrats inviting new media creators to cover the convention was absolutely brilliant because every day people are showing the convention from their perspective. A stroke of genius! Tonight is the last night of the DNC and I am left with one feeling: IT IS UP TO US. When we show up we can make big changes happen. It’s up to us to get out the vote. It is up to us to show up with so many votes there is a clear mandate for progressive change. 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊 What ways are you showing up for change? While I was first introduced to the idea of function over form in my late 20s, I still suffered from internal battles about beauty standards and our cultural obsession with thinness. It was the 90s and early 2000s when heroin chic was a thing. It wasn’t until I got into my serious yoga practice in my late 30s that I began noticing again the functionality of my body. Some days I could do endless Sun salutations and other days I could barely get off the floor. Thankfully where I was practicing was one that asked us to practice self-compassion and acceptance while we were on the mat. Anna was one of the people who I connected with online. She had been using yoga as a tool to relieve her frequent migraines. She has always lived in a bigger body and finding a safe place to practice was a challenge. So she created her own. Show links:

Show notes: I have such a complicated relationship with the 4th of July. It is my mom’s birthday and she’s been gone 9 years. She would be so proud of the life and business I have built helping women with self-care and rebalancing the domestic labor at home while also helping to create more equity in the US. I am so sorry she isn’t here to see it. Independence Day hits differently for me now. Living through historical times is no joke. The veil over the story that America is the land of free and home of the brave is gone. Very few of us are free. We are in the biggest fight for democracy since before World War II. EP 230: More Time Means More Joy with Christine Landis of Peacock Parenting
Show notes: Our guest this week used to work in corporate America and this is what she had to say about becoming a parent: Most people want to leave work behind when they get home, but I found myself leaning into the leadership qualities from my past work life. I naturally turned to experts, built teams to support my partner and me, and recognized that I valued my time differently than every other parent I knew. And interestingly, I seemed to also be genuinely happier than the parents around me, proudly parenting in a way that put my time at the forefront so that I could show up more joyful for my family. Meet Christine Landis. Hi, I'm Christine! Former CEO turned Peacock Parent. I am passionate about empowering parents to delegate like a #boss at home, so they can take more control of their time. By applying the skills I learned in growing and selling a multi-million dollar business to my personal household, I’ve been able to treat the home like a growing company. Delegating low-joy tasks, outsourcing chores, and managing teams at home, ultimately buys my partner and I more quality time with our family. And time is the real luxury in life.

EP 229: The One To Call When You Need An Assistant with Ashley Chang CEO of Sundays
Show notes: How are you? Remember that time in the 90s when Hilary Clinton said it takes a village to raise a child? It turns out she had visited Africa and that it is a very common African proverb attributed to her, but I digress... I could sorta see it then, but the notion that we are all interconnected and rely on one another in small and big ways has been made clear especially during the pandemic. Family Success Team is a term I came up with when we became parents. I define members of our FST as anyone who helps us be successful in any way. People who are on my FST include: school/teachers who work well with our neurodiverse kid, her OT, our therapists, our babysitters who played endless games of Thomas the Train and Duplo, all the neighbors/friends who pick up or drop off my kid when I am not able, all the housecleaners we’ve hired over the years, Carly - our professional organizer who helped me learn how to use our house spaces better, my hairstylist because she saves me time, money and product, my chief of staff Katie who does all the behind the scenes work in my business, the grandparents for taking care of themselves and having a good relationship with our kid, my walking buddies, my yoga teacher, my strength training coach, my parenting coach, my health coach, my business coaches, my physician, my friends who show up day after day, my biz besties, the public library, my Fair Play colleagues, all the authors who have helped me be a better version of myself. I could go on, but I think you get the point. We really aren’t made to do life alone. There is simply too much to be done and we can’t be experts at everything. There is a beautiful surrender to that if you ask me. Imagine having so much to do it is keeping you awake at night, wishing you had a personal/executive assistant, but not having the time or the energy to find someone to add to your Family Success Team. I found the person to talk to at Mom 2 in Nashville. Meet Ashley Chang. , an executive assistant service for working parents. Their goal is to accelerate parents in their careers while creating more time for family. Sundays can help with family, with your home stuff and with your work stuff. Examples include: scheduling medical appointments, helping your kids get a passport, making your vacation itinerary and reservations, getting teacher appreciation gifts, canceling cable/subscriptions, finding and booking a swim teacher or math tutor or nanny. Sundays can also help you get quotes for movers, order photos, replace your house filters and replace appliance pieces. In other words, Sundays help reduce mental load and get those nagging tasks out of your head and on to the DONE list.

EP 225: Failure, Addiction and the Long Game with Jess Lahey

EP 225: Failure, Addiction and the Long Game with Jess Lahey
Show notes: One of the most pivotal life choices I ever made was changing my career from politics to teaching. [You can read about my unconventional career path]. Before studying to be a teacher I had a very fixed mindset. I believed that people were smart or not. I believed that you were born with it or you weren’t. I believed failure was the end of the line and the worst thing that could happen. The philosophical nature of my yoga practice coincided with the timing of my career change. I was seeking something…better. I was choking on the black and white thinking I was used to. Whispers of new ways of thinking crept into my mind while I was on my mat. As I entered my teaching credential program I set the intention to have a beginner's mind. I didn’t have to have the answers already, I was seeking learning. I was allowing myself to show up vulnerably. I was showing my professors and my classmates I was humble enough to learn new things, make mistakes, and try something different to get different results. This simple shift of being okay with not already knowing changed my life forever. Perfectionism had its grip on me for the first 30+ years of my life, and it felt terrible. Teaching allowed me to be present for learning. Not the good scores and college acceptance letters to post on social media. But the real kind. We send our kids to school to learn, but how many of us are okay with making mistakes, failing, not getting what is taught and having to figure it out? Learning means acquiring knowledge or skill in something. That means you start out not knowing anything about it. Then, you learn about it and realize how little you know. With practice, study, and data collection, you can apply what you’ve gained to what you know, and if you stick with it, you’ll eventually become competent. In other words, learning is a hard, ugly process. And it absolutely rocks if you can get beyond the shame of not knowing or being terrible at stuff in the beginning. Anyway, I got to interview Jess Lahey about her books about failure and addiction and I really tried not to fangirl too much.

In other words, I am ready for a little R&R this weekend for Mother’s Day. So many have told me lately that all they want for Mother's Day is some silence and solitude, perhaps a meal they don’t have to think about or clean up after. Me too! So that’s what I requested from my family. I will also be reading by a pool and swimming. Nice way to spend a Sunday if you ask me. So excited to share my interview with Melissa Llarena. We talked about how our imagination is the secret weapon to getting the life and career you want. I love how her mind thinks! EP 222: What Self-Care is Decades Into Your Life with author Jennifer Louden
Show notes: Have you read You Can Heal Your Life? I only understood about every third word, but one big takeaway is: change is possible and you have the power to make it happen. I was sold on the concept, but I needed something a bit more practical to help me in my everyday life. Then I found this book, and everything changed. It set me on the path I am on today. The Women’s Comfort Book: A Self-Nurturing Guide for Restoring Balance in Your Life by Jennifer Louden. Fast forward a few decades and I had a major epiphany: authors are people. People are on social media. ✨poof✨ I found Jen on Twitter and sent her a message telling her how her book had changed my life. She responded (🤗🤩🥳) And now we are BFFS!!! Just kidding! (Sort of)…. In case you haven't met yet. JENNIFER LOUDEN wanted to be Harriet the Spy when she was eight, an enlightened master when she was twelve, and a brilliant comedy writer when she was twenty-two. She penned her bestseller, The Woman’s Comfort Book, after her first why bother time. She’s the author of five additional books including The Woman’s Retreat Book and The Life Organizer. She has inspired millions of women through her books, her retreats, and her newsletter, but probably not through her cooking or her typos. I hope you’ll give this week’s episode with Jennifer Louden a listen. I tried really hard to not fangirl too much. I loved hearing how self-care has evolved over the decades since Jen first wrote her self-care best seller.

EP 221: Five Years!

EP 221: Five Years!
Show notes: Five years ago I published my first 100% Guilt-Free Self-Care episode. I promised myself I would release a season because I knew I had ten things about self-care I wanted to share with you. I had no idea what the show would grow into. 🤯 Over the five years, we have learned from so many authors I admire. We have seen how self-care impacts women in all kinds of industries and professions. Deep dives into Enneagram and Getting Good at Grief gave me a chance to collaborate with my pals and learn more about myself (and you) in the process. Self-care for the 9-5er came about from a question from an audience member. I couldn’t do this without you.

EP 219: Sharing Our Stuff and Adult Friendships with author Laura Tremaine

EP 219: Sharing Our Stuff and Adult Friendships with author Laura Tremaine
Show notes: After I attended an author's panel last year I introduced myself to Laura Tremaine. It was a super nerdy moment for me because I love her books and podcasts. I love her storytelling. I am super intrigued by her. Our backgrounds are very different—she grew up in very conservative Oklahoma, and I grew up in the liberal San Francisco Bay Area. But she moved to Los Angeles in her 20s and has talked about how that has impacted her. Because I wanted to learn more about her, I asked her to be a guest on my podcast; she said yes! Then I made it weird. I didn’t reach out to schedule for almost a year. 🫣 Let this be a lesson to us all: people are lovely even when you leave them hanging for months.
