The Laws of Connection David Robson | #10
On today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host, founding drummer of “Maroon 5”, and as of now… officially licensed therapist, Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for an eye-opening conversation with David Robson, a fantastic Science Journalist known for “The Laws of Connection”. Despite growing up with terrible social anxiety, David has become an incredible writer and speaker. His ideas will change the way that you think about the mind, and in this episode, the three men discuss several of the laws of connection he writes about in his books, including “The Liking Gap”, the “Beautiful Mess Effect” and more. As Duck points out, we are all the “Stars of our own Movies”, and as such we immediately tend to be harder on ourselves than we are on anyone else. We think that people don’t like us, and we’re quick to point out all of our own flaws. David’s science cracks open the ways that we are able to better connect with others, and moreover, why very intelligent people can be drawn to conspiracy theories, cults, and more. It is one of the most fascinating episodes yet on the “Harder to Breathe” Podcast, and will quickly change the way that you look at the mind, social connection, and how the two are intrinsically linked with one another. 0:00:36 Introduction & Officially Licensed! 0:04:07 Seeking Validation 0:07:36 The Six-Year Journey 0:09:20 Finding the Positivity & Healthy Apologies 0:15:06 Navigating Fundamental Disagreements Within Society 0:19:51 Today’s Guest: David Robson 0:21:06 “Severance”: What Would You “Sever” from Your Life? 0:27:21 David Robson Joins the Podcast & Duck’s Anticipation 0:28:31 David’s Extensive Background 0:30:08 The “Science of Shyness” & The “Liking Gap” 0:38:51 The “Beautiful Mess” Effect 0:41:01 Seeking Human Connection 0:48:20 David’s Book: “The Laws of Connection” 0:55:21 Boundaries Within Family Relationships 1:02:56 “The Intelligence Trap” 1:07:21 Falling Prey to Motivated Reasoning 1:10:56 Mob Mentality 1:14:37 The Ultimate Catfish 1:16:31 “The Expectation Effect” 1:24:39 Absolving Yourself of Shame 1:31:31 Embracing Public Speaking from Shyness 1:389:18 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on David Robson: Official Website: https://davidrobson.me/ David’s Substack “60 Seconds of Psychology”: https://substack.com/@davidarobson David’s Books: X: https://x.com/d_a_robson?mx=2 Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

Twin Peaks, Riverdale, & Mental Health with Mädchen Amick | #9
On today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host, founding drummer of “Maroon 5”, and licensed therapist, Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for a conversation with iconic television star and mental health activist, Mädchen Amick. Mädchen was organized and well put together from a young age. She moved to Los Angeles at just 16 years old, and quickly found her footing in the world of acting and modeling. Her big break came with the premiere of David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks”, a TV Show that continues to make waves more than 30 years after its debut. Her passion for mental health began when her son faced issues surrounding Bipolar Disorder. Trying to figure out the best way to help him presented her with the realization that there are way too few mental health resources available, and consequently, many people are suffering and aren’t receiving the support that they require. Today, her “Don’t Mind Me” Foundation aims to create a center in Palm Springs designed to help hundreds of individuals within the community, regardless of circumstance or background. The three all share a great passion for both the arts, and for mental health, and their commitment to making the world a better and healthier place is admirable. One Size Does Not Fit All: Talking Addiction with Dr. Robb Kelly | #7
On today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and founding drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for a riveting conversation with Dr. Robb Kelly: a psychologist, speaker, life coach, and author with some controversial opinions regarding addiction. In what is perhaps the most respectfully contentious episode of the podcast yet, Dr. Rob Kelly and Ryan have the chance to debate the definition of addiction– specifically in how it relates to alcoholism. Dr. Kelly’s stance is that alcoholism is not a lifelong condition, and that it is something that can in fact be cured. That the alcohol itself doesn’t control the mind, but instead the mind rewires itself to believe that alcohol is necessary. That “alcoholics are born, drug-addicts are made”. Ryan’s real-life experience stands in opposition to Dr. Kelly’s stance. Ryan never had a family history of alcoholism, and simply drank in moderation for the first decade of his time drinking. It was only when he started to really use it as a method of coping, that he ultimately found himself unable to go a certain period of time without drinking at all. Ultimately, the three men agree on the most important thing: that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to addiction, and that every individual needs to take a different approach to their recovery. It’s a fantastic episode of the “Harder to Breathe” Podcast that will make you examine how you define addiction for yourself. 0:00:00 Introduction & Speaking to Gen Z at NYU 0:04:51 A More Open & Vulnerable Generation 0:09:38 Music That Goes Straight to the Heart` 0:17:45 Adam Levine and Phil Collins 0:18:52 Today’s Guest: Dr. Robb Kelly 0:23:12 Dr. Robb Kelly joins the Podcast & Shares his Background 0:26:15 A Revelatory Moment on Addiction 0:29:04 Managing Addiction while Living on the Street 0:30:55 Drug Addiction vs. Alcoholism 0:34:50 Ryan’s Respectful “Push Back” 0:41:13 Acknowledging the Family Member’s Perspective 0:44:00 Validating Emotion & Choosing Compassion 0:49:25 Making an Inventory of Fears & Resentments 0:51:28 A Frustrating Day in Graduate School 0:54:10 Can Each Person Have Their Own Sobriety Journey? 0:59:10 The “Matrix” Model of Understanding Addiction 1:00:53 How Dr. Kelly Works with Families 1:05:34 Dealing With Trauma… After Dealing with Addiction 1:06:25 When is the Appropriate Time to Deal With Trauma? 1:11:25 Applying Addictive Tendencies to Career Success 1:17:15 Dr. Robb’s Elton John Story 1:19:35 Where to Find & Contact Dr. Robb Kelly 1:22:38 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on Dr. Robb Kelly: Official Website: https://robbkelly.com/ Instagram: LinkedIn: Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

Therapist vs. Anti-Therapist | #6
On today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and founding drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for a respectful debate with the “Anti-Therapist, Therapist” Diana Mandell. Diana’s personal experiences in life have led her into interaction after interaction with poor therapists. She feels that, as a general note, the majority of therapists out there are doing either “nothing” for their clients, or worse… having a negative impact on their clients’ lives in some way. After Diana’s own life hit rock bottom– losing her business, relationship, friends, home, and more– she decided the only way to move forward was to become her own therapist. Her method proved a success, as she was able to not only dig herself out of the hole, but grow an entire career as a coach on the other side of it. But, as we’ve come to expect on the “Harder to Breathe” Podcast, Ryan and Duck always come prepared with their own distinct points of view. Ryan, as a therapist himself, has personally experienced a selection of really fantastic therapists in his life– many of which are eager to utilize progressive methods and improve their practice for their clients. These differing points of view make for a really great, respectful debate between the “Anti-Therapist”, a Therapist, and Duck, who serves as the much needed voice of the audience. 0:00:34 Introduction & Early Rising 0:02:34 Examining Duck’s Frugality 0:07:14 Ryan’s Relationship With Money 0:11:04 Benefits of Having a Rainy-Day Fund 0:14:49 Money as a Stressor 0:15:22 Scarcity Mindset vs. Mindset of Abundance 0:22:54 Today’s Guest: Diana Mandell 0:24:46 Diana Mandell joins the Podcast 0:25:54 How Diana Entered the World of Coaching 0:32:03 Recognizing Issues in the Therapy Space vs. Coaching Space 0:33:39 Discrepancies in Level of Client Motivation 0:39:49 Sitting in Trauma vs. Tossing it Out 0:45:04 Combatting Binary Thinking 0:49:20 Overreliance on Outdated Information 0:52:44 Diana’s Education Background 0:58:59 Clarifying Issues Within Therapeutic Education 1:02:04 Ryan’s Experience with Progressive Therapists 1:04:26 Does this Contribute to the Stigmatization of Therapy? 1:19:30 What Business Coaching and Lifestyle Coaching with Diana Looks Like 1:20:54 Reframing & Redirecting 1:32:09 Trickle-Down Behavior 1:33:54 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on Diana Mandell: Official Website: dianamandell.com/ Instagram: instagram.com/dianamandell/ LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/dianamandell/ Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

Revisiting ‘Songs About Jane’ w/ Record Producer Matt Wallace | #5
On today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and founding drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for a very special in-person conversation with Matt Wallace: the Record Producer for “Songs About Jane”. Ryan and Matt crossed paths at exactly the right time in both of their lives. Maroon 5 was on the cusp of greatness, but they needed someone who could collaborate on a vision for the sound of their first record. Despite being a low paid position, Matt trusted his gut and took the job. Together, their collaboration resulted in an album that would change all of their lives forever. As good as that was… things weren’t always sunshine and roses. Matt struggled in a major way with anxiety attacks, as well as finding time in his busy schedule to be a good father for his autistic son. Finding a healthy mental state and a sustainable work-life balance is hard for anyone, but when you’re trying to produce a record for a group of young “headstrong” men like the band members of early Maroon 5, it can feel almost impossible. Undoubtedly this is a can’t miss episode of the “Harder to Breathe” Podcast. No matter your interest, whether in music, mental health, growth, therapy, or all of the above, you’ll find something to love in this fascinating and vulnerable conversation. 0:00:34 Introduction & Duck’s New Family Member 0:02:29 Ryan’s New Year & Navigating OCD Tendencies 0:13:13 Writing our own Diss Track (watch out Joe Rogan) 0:14:46 Today’s Guest: Matt Wallace 0:16:40 Matt Wallace Joins the Podcast & Relives his History with Maroon 5 0:27:19 Matt’s First Impressions of Each Band Member 0:30:00 Attitude Regrets & Creative Tension 0:34:39 Compromise vs. Standing Firm 0:37:02 Recounting A Tense Moment During Production & Apologies 0:42:37 Prioritizing Self-Care 0:45:49 Managing Panic Attacks & Anxiety 0:53:19 The Upside & Growth on the Other Side 0:55:37 Learning Patience Through an Autistic Child 0:59:46 Becoming a Better Parent Through Experience 1:04:46 Benefitting From Work Relationships 1:06:48 Matt’s Deep Appreciation for Ryan’s Story & Work 1:10:02 The Gifts That Came From the Struggle 1:13:48 “This Too Shall Pass” 1:17:46 Finding the Part of You that’s Worth Saving 1:20:38 Matt’s Solutions to Anxiety in Present Day 1:22:13 What’s Going On Now & Musical Connection 1:29:30 Musician Based Therapy 1:32:29 Do You Need Pain to Create Great Art? 1:35:10 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on Matt Wallace: Official Website: https://www.wallacematt.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/wizardwallace/ Youtube Studio Link: https://www.youtube.com/user/liveatstudiodelux Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

On today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and founding drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for an in-person conversation with Ryan’s longtime friend, Podcast Host, Author, Speaker, and Financial Guide, Chris Panagiotu. Chris is an all-or-nothing guy, and he wears that designation proudly. He carries that passion and energy in every aspect of his life, whether in his relationships or in his business… and it’s absolutely contagious. There is much more to Chris than just his energy and enthusiasm, however. Throughout their conversation, Ryan and Duck are able to get Chris to open up about his Rocky Relationship with his Dad, as well as his struggles growing up with Crohn's Disease. Despite the difficulties of his past, Chris will be the first to tell you that the lessons he’s learned have shaped him into who he is today. It’s another really fun, yet deep and thought provoking conversation on the “Harder to Breathe” Podcast. Breaking into vulnerable topics with successful people in the realm of sales can sometimes prove challenging, but Chris is a fantastic example that it IS possible to be a great business person AND be truthful, passionate, honest, and forthcoming as well. 0:00:34 Introduction & Duck’s Fashion Choices 0:01:31 Thanksgiving Emotions 0:08:28 Today’s Guest: Chris Panagiotu 0:10:55 Chris Joins the Podcast & Shares his History with Ryan 0:18:24 Cutting Out the Bullshit 0:210:29 Resilience & Handling Crohn's Disease 0:26:17 Chris’s Rocky Relationship with his Dad 0:30:29 Authentically Helpful 0:33:24 Creating Business Loyalty 0:38:56 “Life is a Choice” 0:44:57 Blocking Out Trauma 0:49:55 The Emotions Chris was Escaping 0:53:19 Mental Models 0:56:17 Letting Go of Resentment & Choosing Forgiveness 1:02:20 “The Best Revenge is a Life Well Lived” 1:08:16 Looking Back on Childhood 1:11:31 Yearly New Year’s Resolutions 1:17:28 Compounding Success 1:20:41 Ryan’s Biggest Regret 1:21:47 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on Chris Panagiotu: Podcast Website: Podcast Instagram: Book Link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B5FG9FZY Business Website: www.capitalizeyourfinances.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/christopher-panagiotu-cfp%C2%AE-crps%C2%AE-13a573176 Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

Putting Away the Concealer: feat. Celebrity Makeup Artist Jamie Greenberg | #3
On today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and founding drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for a fascinating conversation with celebrity makeup artist, influencer, and CEO, Jamie Greenberg. Duck’s relationship with Jamie goes back to their days together at Ithaca College in a co-ed dorm space. In the years since, Jamie moved from job to job before finding her true passion in make-up by taking on a minimum wage job at Ulta. After moving to Los Angeles, opportunities arose for Jamie who has since climbed the ladder to become one of the biggest names in the celebrity makeup space. Her hard working nature got her in the door, but it’s her personality and dedication to authenticity that has given her the success she’s found at every level– a charisma and charm that is evident even to us as audience members. As it often does on the “Harder to Breathe” Podcast, The conversation ultimately finds its footing in Mental Health, most notably when the three all find common ground around the allegory of the “sad clown”: the character whose job it is to make other people happy, but struggles to find happiness for themselves. From there Ryan, Duck, and Jamie touch on the psychology behind being a “people-pleaser”, the intimacy of working as a makeup artist, and so much more. 0:00:36 Introduction & Duck’s Fancy New Lighting 0:02:59 Maximizing Potential in the New Year 0:06:16 The “Ick Factor” of Business Promotion 0:12:40 Facing the Fear of Public Perception 0:18:11 Today’s Guest: Jamie Greenberg 0:19:34 Jamie Greenberg joins the Podcast & the Co-Ed Dorm Experience 0:22:11 A Life of Many Moving Parts 0:28:11 “Doing More” as a Coping Style 0:31:16 Positivity and Authenticity in Social Media Content 0:36:01 Being Conscious of “Vibes” 0:37:16 The Intimate Relationship with the Makeup Artist 0:38:43 How Jamie Got Started in Makeup 0:43:57 Breaking Into Celebrity Makeup 0:46:40 Approaching Heavy Topics in an Intimate Space 0:49:40 The “Sad Clown” 0:53:52 Avoiding Compassion Fatigue through Family 0:57:12 The Business and CEO Mindset 1:05:47 The Importance of the Caregiver 1:09:47 Learning to “Roll With It” 1:13:17 The Second Job: Promotion 1:15:07 Bathrooms At Softball Fields (and Concert Venues) 1:17:07 Jamie’s Social Media Integration 1:25:05 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on Jamie Greenberg: Official Website: www.jamiemakeup.com/ Instagram: www.instagram.com/jamiemakeup/ Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

Holding Our Breath: Grief, Fun, and the LA Wildfires | #2
On today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and founding drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard to break down the impact, fear, and trauma surrounding the current LA Wildfires. Afterwards, the duo are joined by the host of the “Dopey” Podcast, David Manheim, for an incredible conversation surrounding Recovery, Fun, and so much more. Living in LA during the greatest wildfire the city has ever seen has led Duck and Ryan, and many other LA locals, to a great deal of emotion and uncertainty. The two share their concerns surrounding the current events in Los Angeles, but ultimately decide that the best way to find comfort is by moving forward, and as such they’ve chosen to continue with their plans to speak with David. With David on board, the conversation quickly becomes one of the funniest, and also heaviest that we’ve ever had on the “Harder to Breathe” Podcast. That dichotomy is perfectly on brand for David, whose entire “Dopey” Podcast is based around comedic stories about his drug-use and addiction before he got sober. In a far-reaching discussion, the three men talk at length about the 12 Step Program, about “Fun” being a defining motivation for finding connection with other human beings, about dealing with the Grief of losing a friend and Podcast Partner, and so much more. It’s a great showcase for why David has been so successful with his own Podcast, because he is able to walk the fine line between humor and recovery– an approach that has reached and helped many people over the years. The chemistry between the three is undeniable, and it makes for an absolutely can’t-miss episode of “Harder to Breathe”. L.A. A Recovering Narcissist: Ben Feldman | #1
On the season two premiere of “Harder to Breathe'', host and founding drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for a conversation with Emmy Award Nominated Actor, Ben Feldman. Ben has played iconic roles in shows such as Mad Men and SuperStore. He found quick success out of College, immediately booking an understudy role on Broadway, as well as a role in a TV Pilot. From the jump, success came pretty easily for him, and these experiences launched both his career… and his ego… to new heights. In a fantastic and honest conversation, the trio discuss the challenges of working as an actor: How it requires a certain level of confidence and “delusion”, but that every single “high” can just as easily be followed by a “low”– even for actors working at a high level like Ben. In typical “Harder to Breathe” fashion, the conversation turns to Ben’s experience growing up as the child of an alcoholic mother, and how the experience of growing up in that sort of environment— and subsequently seeing his mother’s sobriety and recovery before her death— impacted the way that Ben perceives the world. It’s an impressive conversation that shows the power of vulnerability in understanding the behavior of others, and it makes for a can’t-miss Season 2 Premiere episode of the podcast. 0:00:00 Introduction & Political Fatigue/Anxiety 0:05:12 Taking Solace in History 0:08:52 Recognizing Privilege in Politics 0:13:40 Today’s Guest: Ben Feldman 0:17:36 Newfound Openness in Old Relationships 0:24:15 Ben Feldman Joins the Podcast & Talks Past Relationships 0:26:53 First Impressions in College 0:30:31 Confidence Within Deep-Seated Insecurity 0:33:50 The Humbling Moment(s) 0:37:30 Understudying on Broadway 0:42:00 A “Recovering Narcissist” 0:43:53 Ben’s Mother’s Alcoholism 0:49:21 Is This Just How Parents… Are? 0:52:25 Ben’s Sober Mom vs. Drunk Mom 0:53:56 Caretaking Within Other Relationships 0:55:34 Life Experience Meeting Casting Opportunities 0:58:20 Preparation For Ben’s Role on Mad Men 1:04:36 The Contrast of Ben’s Role on “SuperStore” 1:06:28 Referencing Psychosis Prior to Working on Mad Men 1:09:35 Growing up With 2 Advertising Parents 1:11:08 Peaks and Valleys 1:13:14 The Effect of SuperStore 1:18:06 Having Kids 1:23:34 Upcoming Projects: “Population 11” 1:26:57 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on Ben Feldman: Instagram: IMDb: Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

Our First Season: Looking Back & Looking Ahead | #28
On the season one finale of “Harder to Breathe'', host and founding drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for an honest conversation about the first season of the podcast, how things have gone so far, and how they hope things will go moving forward into season two. Putting together honest, truthful, and authentic interviews about mental health requires a certain level of vulnerability from the hosts themselves. Ryan and Duck take this opportunity at the end of the year to do just that: expressing their own emotions, struggles, victories, and much more. In a bit of a shift from their usual “therapist-client” relationship, Ryan opens up to Duck at length, for the first time on air, about issues that he has faced over the past year. He speaks about his mother’s health issues, and how they have required him to take on the caregiver role. He also confides in the audience about the separation of himself from his partner, and how it has felt to be properly alone for the first time in a long time. The relationship between Duck and Ryan is the core of the “Harder to Breathe” podcast, and their vulnerability about not only their lives, but the state of this podcast is admirable. They’re willing to talk about the difficulties that come along with trying to find an audience, but they also take the time to stop and thank YOU… our existing audience. So if you’re reading this, THANK YOU, from all of us at “Harder to Breathe”. If this has helped you in any way, please let us know! Mrs. X Can Suck It. | #27
For today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and founding drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for an incredibly beautiful and pure conversation with best-selling novelist, Allie Larkin. Allie’s warmth and compassion is unmistakable. Her earnestness finds its way into everything she says, and the conversation between the three flows effortlessly. That is no doubt in part due to Allie’s pre-existing relationship with Duck, which goes all the way back to their first ever acting class at Ithaca College in New York State. Despite Allie’s pleasant demeanor, she’s dealt with some struggles in her life, which have led her to separating herself from her biological family and being very intentional about creating community for herself. Beyond that, she has also had to learn how to navigate ADHD, and through her understanding of her diagnosis, has come to realize that she actually IS a very smart and capable person, despite what her teacher might have said. (Suck it, Mrs. X!) It’s the exact sort of discussion we aim for on the “Harder to Breathe” Podcast– a conversation that is relatable, eye-opening, authentic, and promises that there is in fact an enjoyable and exciting life on the other side of whatever it is that you may be going through. 0:00:00 Introduction & Duck’s Triumphant Performance Arc 0:05:45 Ryan’s Take on Duck’s Performance 0:09:22 Duck’s Touching Family Experience 0:12:57 Recognizing the Great Moments as an Adult 0:15:49 Accepting Praise as Shared Appreciation 0:18:31 Today’s Guest: Allie Larkin — 0:22:06 Allie Larkin Joins the Podcast & Shares her Relationship with Duck 0:30:54 The Impact of Allie’s College Experience 0:37:32 Handling and Growing Through ADHD 0:40:49 Finding the “Zone” within Hyperfocus 0:44:03 Navigating Feedback as a Bestseller Fictional Author 0:54:40 What Ryan is Most Proud Of 0:55:58 Working Through Difficulties Through Writing 0:58:04 Chosen Families vs. Birth Families 1:03:14 Are The Books “Chick Lit.”? 1:07:26 Ryan’s Connection to Family 1:13:21 The “True Hearts Collective” 1:21:11 How to Join the Collective 1:24:44 Allie’s Next Book 1:25:17 The Harder to Breathe Lightning Round 1:31:13 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on the Allie Larkin: Allie Larkin’s Website: www.allielarkinwrites.com “The People We Keep” Book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW2KMG6V? Thriving in Marriage, Parenthood, & Recovery feat. Jessica & Aaron Winder | #26
For today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and founding drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for a conversation with a powerhouse couple in recovery, Jessica and Aaron Winder. Jessica is an author and in-demand career coach, and Aaron is a Personal Injury Attorney based in Las Vegas, Nevada. In one of the most heart warming and affirming episodes in the series yet, Jessica and Aaron share their own personal stories of recovery from addiction. Jessica dealt with many years of alcoholism– an addiction which led her to the point of regularly vomiting blood– while simultaneously studying and keeping up high-functioning appearances. Aaron’s struggles were more centered on an addiction to Marijuana, but they eventually led him to getting hooked on harder drugs. That’s when he decided that he needed to make a change. Early in Jessica’s Recovery, and several years into Aarons, the two met online and their fairy tale romance began, one in which both partners have given so much to each other throughout their years together. Jessica has already had twin girls, and is now pregnant again with another set of twins. The two are clearly very much in love, and it’s a testament that no matter how “far gone” you might feel, there is always hope and a light on the other side of recovery. It’s perhaps the most encouraging episode of “Harder to Breathe” to date, and an absolutely can’t miss listen. 0:00:00 Introduction & Slowing Down 0:04:25 Organic Discovery 0:06:10 Benefits of Journaling 0:12:37 Poetry as Therapy 0:16:05 Today’s Guests: Jessica & Aaron Winder — 0:20:35 The Winders Join the Podcast & Jessica Shares Her Recovery Story 0:24:20 Aaron Shares His Recovery Story 0:26:36 What Led to Substance Abuse as Successful People? 0:32:38 The Start of the Winders’ Relationship 0:35:54 Doing it for You vs. Doing it for Someone Else 0:40:14 Quickly Moving From Engagement to Marriage 0:46:13 Current Twins… and Upcoming Twins 0:48:28 Navigating Professional Life vs. Parenting and Romance 0:52:06 Acknowledging the Struggle 0:56:52 Leaning Into Values, Purpose, and Meaning 1:01:12 Personal Life Coming into Coaching 1:04:17 What Would You Say to Your Younger Self? 1:09:32 Betraying Your Established Identity 1:17:33 What is it About Jessica That Made Her The One? 1:22:22 What is it About Aaron That Made Him The One? 1:23:50 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on the Winders: “The Hidden Gem Within” Book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BW2KMG6V? Ato is an actor who has found his way onto all of our screens at one point or another, through iconic roles in “Garden State”, “Blood Diamond”, and many more. Now, he has been thrust into the limelight once again through his powerful role on the latest season of “The Diplomat”, now available on Netflix. Ato and Duck had a special opportunity to work together on set in the past, and it speaks well to Ato’s warmth and charm that the two have maintained a connection all these years later. Ryan and Duck are quickly able to connect with the struggles that Ato has faced in growing his career as an actor, and his resilience and determination is inspiring, regardless of your background or career. It’s a wide-reaching conversation that spans from parental approval, to authenticity, to recent health scares. Our mental health and our physical health are much more connected than many of us realize, and as such there are huge connections between our changing bodies and how those changes affect our minds and our emotions. Dr. Suzanne is a world-class expert on all things womens’ health, and her appearances on shows like the Drew Barrymore Show and others have brought her an enormous following, a huge market for her book “Menopause Bootcamp”, as well as a long waitlist to gain access to her as a personal physician. Through their fascinating and illuminating conversation, Dr. Suzanne gives Ryan and Duck a great deal of information regarding womens’ health that is all too often kept private. The bodies of both men and women frequently change as we age and go through our lives, and regardless of gender, people are much better equipped to handle it when they have the required information. Drumming Up Conversation with Darrin Pfeiffer of Goldfinger | #23
For today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and founding drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined for a special one-on-one conversation with another legendary drummer in his own right… the founding drummer of Goldfinger, Darrin Pfeiffer. On Paper, Darrin and Ryan have had pretty similar life experiences. Both were founding drummers of iconic bands, and both ultimately stepped away from the position that initially brought them into the limelight. And while they certainly do have drumming in common, the experiences they faced while in their respective bands and the circumstances that pulled them away could not be any more different. Darrin’s experience with Goldfinger was one of many ups and downs, including an insane (World Record Setting) touring schedule, and many bouts of heavy conflict with his bandmates. Throughout the conversation with Ryan he goes into detail about some of the issues that he’s faced, primarily with frontman John Feldmann, and how they’ve worked to come to terms with their relationship over the years. In typical “Harder to Breathe” fashion, Ryan and Darrin also manage to connect on mental health, and the way that ADD has played a large part in Darrin’s upbringing and growth as a human and as an artist. The two are truly a perfect match, and here they come together for a fantastic, interesting, and engaging conversation on drumming, music, and mental health. 0:00:00 Introduction & Duck’s Absence 0:05:22 Today’s Guest: Darrin Pfieffer of Goldfinger 0:08:25 Ryan’s Experiences Singing Lead 0:09:33 Singing & Anxiety 0:13:00 Enjoying the Afterparty 0:14:39 Darrin’s Life After Goldfinger — 0:16:40 Darrin Pfieffer Joins the Podcast 0:17:57 The Whirlwind of Goldfinger 0:24:42 Managing the Mental Stress of Touring 0:27:22 Managing the Physical Stress of Touring 0:31:31 ADD as a Child and an Adult 0:40:28 Drummers & Their Frontmen 0:51:05 The Push & Pull of Band Relationships 1:06:01 Darrin’s Reasons for Leaving Goldfinger 1:10:51 The Aftermath and the “Relief” of Leaving the Band 1:23:37 Darrin’s Current Projects 1:28:30 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on Darrin Pfeiffer: The “Dangerous Darrin” Podcast: Punk Rock Karaoke: https://www.originalpunkrockkaraoke.com/ Instagram: Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

Finding Authenticity in Silicon Valley with Alessandro Chesser | #21
For today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and founding drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for an encouraging and thought provoking conversation with the CEO and Co-Founder of GetDynasty.com, Alessandro Chesser. Alessandro grew up in Silicon Valley, the child of hard working Cicilian Immigrants. He saw firsthand the wealth that so many of his friends' families had acquired by being part of various startups… and he became determined to do the same when he got older. He has accomplished all that and so much more. After running several companies and building Millions of Dollars worth of sales, Alessandro has already achieved an incredible amount in his life. However, While many may think that his success has been all happiness and roses, oftentimes it has very much been the opposite. Alessandro is an open book, and the vulnerability and struggles he shares through this conversation on the “Harder to Breathe” Podcast are really inspiring. He goes into the physical manifestations of the anxiety that he’s experienced, how he’s turned to substance abuse in the past, and how becoming a father has changed the way he sees the world entirely. It’s a lesson in the value and importance of authenticity, not only in business and sales, but in life. 0:00:00 Introduction & Duck’s “On Location” Life 0:01:10 The Guilt of Separation From Family 0:05:14 Duck’s Production of “Once” 0:07:20 Ryan’s Exciting Announcement 0:09:40 The Harder to Breathe Book 0:13:25 Today’s Guest: Alessandro Chesser ***** 0:16:56 Alessandro Chesser Joins the Podcast 0:22:36 Mental Health Struggles in the World of Silicon Valley 0:25:56 Finding the Sweet Spot for Avoiding Work Anxiety 0:29:01 The Sources of External & Internal Pressure 0:34:41 Changing Times & Ease of Dopamine Hits 0:35:48 The Manifestations of Stress on Alessandro’s Life 0:40:41 What People Miss About Understanding Substanc Use 0:47:46 The Effect of the Loss of Natural Structure 0:51:00 Honesty and Transparency in Business 0:55:31 The Emotional Approach to Alessandro’s Work 0:59:01 The Cycle of Authenticity 1:03:30 Managing Anxiety and Coping Strategies 1:07:11 One Proudest Achievement 1:09:01 Are You “Happy” Now? 1:14:38 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on Alessandro Chesser: Alessandro’s Company: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alessandro-chesser-84763748 Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

Verses & Vulnerability with Songwriter Jenna Andrews | #20
For today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and founding drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard to share a fantastic conversation with Jenna Andrews: musician, songwriter, and producer for the the likes of icons such as BTS, Drake, Jennifer Lopez, Tori Kelly, and so many more. Having gotten started as a musician herself, Jenna has the unique vantage point of understanding both the artistic and administrative aspects of finding success in the music industry… and on the flipside, she knows what it's like to find herself in the middle of a Panic Attack in the middle of an important session. The three have an instant connection, perhaps most epitomized by their shared agreement that all aspects of life, whether intentionally planned or otherwise, have the ability to come back to serve you in a greater purpose down the road. Yes, even dealing with anxiety. Ryan, Duck, and Jenna all agree that perceptions surrounding mental health have improved from where they used to be… but that there is also still a long way to go. The challenge is especially prevalent in positions of leadership. Thankfully, through Jenna’s “The Green Room Talks” Podcast, and hopefully through our own “Harder to Breathe” Podcast as well, more and more people will consider honesty and vulnerability not as a liability but instead, as a useful tool for human connection, sympathy, and understanding. 0:00:00 Introduction & Ryan’s Nicknames 0:04:30 Duck’s Covid Recovery 0:06:15 Delay & Technical Issues 0:06:50 Today’s Guest: Jenna Andrews 0:08:55 How to Navigate an Unhealthy Family Situation — 0:18:09 Jenna Andrews Joins the Podcast 0:19:09 Adjusting to the Move to Nashville 0:22:34 Dealing with Anxiety as a Budding Artist 0:27:33 Changing Times in the Music Industry 0:29:24 Having No Regrets and Growing from Negative Experiences 0:32:45 Transitioning Into Songwriting and Producing 0:35:04 Anxieties Working Behind the Scenes 0:38:24 Challenges as a Woman in a Leadership Role 0:39:59 Getting Up After Failure 0:43:24 Fortune, Luck, Preparation, & Opportunity 0:48:29 Life’s Journeys Coming Together 0:52:24 One Defining Moment 0:53:14 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on Jenna Andrews: “The Green Room Talks” Podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/0aRS6rn84LMHLS2MD1Ocaf Instagram: /thejennaandrews Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

Facing Fear through Faith: A Discussion with Dr. David Rosmarin | #19
For today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and founding drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard to share a truly profound discussion with Dr. David Rosmarin, author, speaker, and founder of the Center for Anxiety. So often in the medical space, spirituality is totally dismissed. On the other hand, in many spiritual circles, science is passed over in favor of faith. With Dr. Rosmarin, the two things can– and in fact should– live together in harmony… especially when it comes to approaching mental health and anxiety. Dr. David has spent his professional career seeking ways to better handle his own issues with anxiety, and doing what he can to help others who are struggling in the same way. Through the conversation with Ryan and Duck, we learn pretty quickly just how relatable and useful his advice is, and how each of the men has used his “4 Steps” to get on the other side of a pretty intense anxiety attack. No matter where you stand from a Spiritual Perspective, it’s an absolutely can’t-miss conversation. Dr. Rosmarin recognizes that each one of us, at some point in our lives, feels the need to connect to something greater than ourselves. In doing so, we allow ourselves to take a step back, and accept whatever might come our way. It’s a conversation that sits right at the heart of improving mental health, openness, and vulnerability, the primary goals here at the “Harder to Breathe” Podcast. 0:00:00 Introduction & Cream Colored Polos 0:01:08 Today’s Guest: Dr. David Rosmarin 0:03:06 The Varied Voices of the Podcast Guests 0:05:31 Duck’s Foundational Moment & Ryan’s Advice 0:18:08 The “Holding Hands” Analogy ***** 0:23:20 Dr. David Rosmarin’s Origin Story 0:31:08 The Scientific and Spiritual Approach to Mental Health 0:34:48 Spiritual Influences: Personally and Professionally 0:44:28 Dr. David’s Rosmarin’s Journey Today 0:47:36 The Center for Anxiety 0:50:28 Treatment Options for Clinical Mental Health Issues 0:53:33 4 Actionable Steps in Life to Ease Non-Clinical Anxiety 0:58:50 The Intersection of Spirituality with the 4 Steps 1:03:48 Duck’s Connection to Anxiety 1:08:31 “Give Up Control to Gain Control” 1:09:22 Ryan’s Passover Story 1:15:38 Dr. David’s Personal Experience Through Spirituality 1:17:42 Where Anxiety Continues to Creep Up 1:18:58 Upcoming TedX in Nashville 1:20:08 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on Dr. David Rosmarin: Website: https://dhrosmarin.com/ Instagram: Center for Anxiety: https://www.centerforanxiety.org/ Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

The name and concept of “Big Talk” is simple, but the execution is nuanced, complex, and changing lives around the globe. As Kalina explains, “Big Talk” is simply the opposite of Small Talk. It’s a set of questions that are designed to improve the conversations that we have with other people. She has sorted the questions into a deck of cards, which provide the encouragement we need to dive into a discussion from a Deeper Place… and avoid superficial conversations that leave us feeling unfulfilled. Kalina has used government grants and global travel to test out the concept of “Big Talk” with people all around the globe, and its widespread success simply proves how universal the human experience is. We all deal with love, loss, grief, pride, success, and failure and discussing these topics is the easiest way we can connect with other people. Ultimately the trio share in a few rounds of “Big Talk” for themselves, and have the opportunity to open up with each other and quickly dig into some vulnerable topics; the bread and butter of the “Harder to Breathe” podcast. 0:00:00 Introduction & Duck’s Bad Week 0:01:32 Technical Difficulties Update 0:05:06 Working Through Duck’s Anger & Family Frustration 0:11:10 D.B.T.: Dialectical Behavior Therapy 0:17:45 Ryan Finding His Center & Balance 0:19:45 Adam Levine’s ADHD & Ryan’s OCD 0:23:19 Embracing The Concept of “Choice” 0:34:15 Today’s Guest: Kalina Silverman — 0:35:15 Kalina’s Project: What is “Big Talk”? 0:39:26 The Mission Behind the Project 0:41:08 Male Friendships & Activities 0:42:10 The Desire to Dig Deeper into Relationships 0:42:50 The “Mixed Race Student Coalition” & Experiencing Multiculturalism 0:48:00 Newfound Perspective 0:49:28 Kalina’s Dark Side 0:51:45 Fighting Loneliness & Depression 0:55:39 How to Classify “Big Talk” 0:59:10 Navigating the Business Side & Grants 1:03:50 The Cause of Loneliness in the World 1:05:20 Kalina’s Goals Surrounding “Big Talk” 1:07:50 Some Big Talk of Our Own… “What is the Best Part of Your Day”? 1:13:50 “If You Could Change Anything About the World…” 1:20:25 “If You Could Live Anywhere Else for a Year, Where?” 1:26:36 Where to Find “Big Talk” And What’s Next for the Movement 1:28:20 Kalina’s Favorite Questions in the Deck 1:30:00 How Kalina Got Through Her Parents’ Divorce 1:31:00 The Arts & Music Within Mental Health 1:35:50 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on Kalina Silverman & “Big Talk”: Official Webpage: Purchase Your Own “Big Talk” Deck: Download the App: Instagram: Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

Tuning In and Reaching Out: The Legendary Rob Cavallo Speaks on Mental Health | #17
For today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and former drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for an incredible discussion with an absolute legend… It’s the one and only Rob Cavallo. If you aren’t familiar with his name, you’re familiar with his music. He has produced records for Green Day, Linkin Park, My Chemical Romance, The Goo Goo Dolls, Fleetwood Mac and more… all of which have combined to sell over 130 million copies worldwide. Rob and Ryan were first introduced in the 90’s when Rob produced “The Fourth World” for Kara’s Flowers, the band that would eventually become known as Maroon 5. They’ve kept in contact over the years, giving us the incredible opportunity to hear about Rob’s personal connection to his work and to mental health. The ease with which Rob goes from talking about producing some of the biggest albums of all time to talking about his own personal struggles with PTSD, speaks to how much he prioritizes mental health, therapy, and increasing accessibility to those who might otherwise be unable to afford it. Whether you’re someone with a fascination surrounding the music industry, music production, have an interest in mental health, or all of the above, Rob, Ryan, and Duck cover it with precision. It takes a certain kind of creative mind to be able to produce a catalog like Rob’s, and it’s such an incredible opportunity to get a small sample of what makes him tick here on the “Harder to Breathe” podcast. 0:00:00 Introduction & Duck’s Ailments 0:01:15 Duck’s Musical Booking & Associated Anxiety 0:05:22 The Difference Between Self-Efficacy and Self-Esteem 0:07:20 Choosing Growth Opportunities 0:09:40 Connecting with a Therapist Over Past Trauma 0:10:56 Today’s Guest: Rob Cavallo ***** 0:13:27 Rob Cavallo Joins the Podcast 0:17:03 “Jawbreaker’s Influence on Rob’s Early Career 0:20:50 Making the Art You Want to Make 0:27:12 Consistency Through Authenticity (The Green Day Story) 0:29:38 PTSD & Mental Health Issues Following Success 0:41:59 Techniques for Maneuvering Anxiety 0:45:59 Improved Relationships After Therapy 0:47:51 Duck’s “American Idiot” Story 0:50:03 Acquiring the Tools to Succeed as a Music Producer 0:57:52 The Influence of Kara’s Flowers on Music 1:06:53 Creating The Fleetwood Mac Reunion 1:12:43 The Impact of Jerry Finn’s Death 1:20:53 Rob’s Focus on Mental Health in the Music Business 1:25:49 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on Rob Cavallo: Wikipedia Page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rob_Cavallo Music Speaks Official Webpage: https://www.musicspeakstherapy.com Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

Dealing with Trauma from the Bottom Up | #16
For today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'", host and former drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard to discuss a highly effective form of therapy known as “Somatic Experiencing” with licensed professional, speaker, author, and coach, Jen Guidry. Jen reached the highest level of career success in the Mortgage world, having achieved a 7 figure income, and constantly in high demand. Everything was great… until she was diagnosed with cancer. The near-death experience totally rocked her world, and it forced her to realize that she was working in a space that wasn’t fulfilling. She wanted to help people. As she explains, after surviving several high-intensity Panic Attacks while driving her vehicle, Jen was introduced by a friend to Somatic Experiencing– which at its core is a form of therapy intended to target the body and the way that the body physically manifests trauma. From there, she went down a deep rabbit hole, eventually becoming a licensed specialist in the area, writing books, and now coaching many people on the benefits every single day. It’s an amazing and highly balanced conversation. Ryan walks us through his personal experience with Somatic Experiencing and how it was effective for him in a way that traditional talk therapy was not, and Duck represents us, the audience, as a mediator of the discussion to ensure that those of us who aren’t quite as familiar with the practice understand exactly what it’s about. It’s a fantastic discussion, and another can’t-miss episode of the “Harder to Breathe” Podcast. 0:00:00 Introduction & Revisiting Former Podcasts 0:04:27 Relating Talk Radio to Podcasts 0:07:48 Balancing the Subjectivity within Therapy 0:11:56 Ryan’s Experience as a Recovery Center Volunteer 0:14:33 Today’s Guest: Jen Guidry — 0:18:51 Jen Guidry Joins the Podcast 0:20:10 Making the Choice to Change Careers Mid-Life 0:24:14 Jen’s Personal Connection to her Work 0:24:32 Dropping Stress & Burnout as a “Badge of Honor” 0:29:33 Dealing with vs. Escaping Something Painful 0:31:17 Can a Well-Balanced Person Become Successful? 0:35:27 Duck’s Cancer Scare 0:37:52 Regulating the Nervous System 0:45:17 The Process: What is Somatic Experiencing? 0:50:27 Ryan’s Experience with Somatic Experiencing 0:56:47 Traditional Therapy vs. Coaching 1:00:27 Jen’s Preference for Specialization 1:04:52 Growing Up the Child of an Alcoholic 1:09:47 Working with Jen Guidry 1:13:17 Wrap Up & Conclusion

Each of the three approaches the conversation from a different angle: Destini Ann as a single mother with ADHD, Duck as a Father of an 11-Year-Old Son, and Ryan without children, but who regularly works with parents as part of his therapy practice. Getting Radically Transparent with Nikki Sharp | #13
For today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and former drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard to welcome a true Renaissance Woman and multi-hyphenate in the amazing Nikki Sharp. Nikki is a Former Model, and Present-Day Speaker, Health Professional, Author, Podcaster, and Coach, but despite all her labels, one thing you’ll learn quickly is that the only label that truly matters to Nikki is “Nikki”. Being herself. It’s that sort of Radical Transparency that has guided her through some troubled and stressful times in her life, including overcoming an Eating Disorder and getting through her recent divorce. Throughout the Course of the discussion, a recurring theme is choosing yourself through Self-Love and everything that it entails… but also avoiding the pitfalls that come along with over indulging in unhealthy coping mechanisms. How do we find the balance between the two? From there the conversation finds its way to the concept of “Masks” or “Alter-Egos”. Are we truly being ourselves if we act differently in different surroundings? When is it healthy and when is it hurtful? Being Transparent and Authentic is easier said than done, but Nikki’s “Zero F***s Mentality” is contagious, and you walk away from the conversation feeling ready to break through any emotional or physical barriers that might be holding you back. It’s a fantastic discussion, and another thought-provoking and memorable episode of the “Harder to Breathe” Podcast. 0:00:00 Introduction & Duck’s Skating Accident 0:02:00 Duck’s Free Therapy: Radical Transparency vs. Romanticism 0:10:10 Application in Ryan and Duck’s Relationship 0:13:31 Today’s Guest: Nikki Sharp 0:16:18 How Intergenerational Trauma Most Commonly Shows Up —-- 0:18:33 Opening With (Radical) Transparency 0:22:35 Living Life by the Zero F***s Mentality 0:23:37 What Nikki “Thought” She Wanted (But Didn’t) 0:24:59 Turning to & Avoiding Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms 0:29:30 30 Days of Self-Love 0:30:25 Finding the Sweet Spot Between Self-Love and Over-Indulgence 0:34:25 How Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms Present Themselves 0:42:00 Being Proactive in Your Wellness instead of Reactive 0:45:35 Parallels Between Ryan and Nikki’s Experiences 0:47:15 Dealing with Imposter Syndrome in Front-Facing Spaces 1:00:39 Choosing to Wear Masks… For Yourself 1:05:42 When the “Alter-Ego” Takes Over 1:09:25 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on Nikki Sharp: https://www.nikkisharp.com/ - Official Website https://www.instagram.com/nikkisharp/ - Instagram https://open.spotify.com/show/1GAevNAjs86inVYIqyIAAK - “A Sharper Life” Podcast Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

For today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and former drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for a discussion with successful entrepreneur, speaker, and coach, Bill Faeth. Bill has been at the helm of many start-up businesses, has had countless employees, and has acquired an enormous Net Worth over the years… and even he has room to open up about stress, family, and leadership. You would think that “artist-types” Ryan and Duck wouldn’t have much in common with a Type A Personality like Bill, but as the discussion progresses you’ll have the chance to watch Bill’s walls come down in real time as he moves from mentioning the remarkable work he has done in the business sector, to confiding with us about the role he plays at home and with his family. Bill is an incredible individual to hear speak, and will be the first to tell you how he is extremely organized and put together. For today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and former drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for a discussion with Ryan’s Father, Kenny Dusick. Together the three share a fascinating conversation surrounding the ups and downs of a father-son relationship that has spanned success, addiction, and everything else in between. Kenny, or “Uncle Kenny” as he likes to be called, is the life of the party, and his humor, charm, and charisma is part of what has given him so much success as an attorney, and within his personal relationships. But underneath the surface, he has had to deal with many issues of his own throughout his journey, and the vulnerability he expresses regarding codependency, control issues, and the relationships with his own parents is all laid out in this discussion. It may be one of the deepest conversations we’ve seen yet on the “Harder to Breathe” Podcast, as Ryan and Kenny talk through their own former codependency, and how ultimately creating some separation was what was needed in order for Ryan to be able to grow as a human being and as an artist. It all culminates at the “House of Blues”, where Kenny and Ryan had a bit of a revealing argument in the past… but it proved to be an essential conversation in opening up a much healthier relationship for them moving forward. 0:00:00 Introduction & Living in California 0:03:00 Today’s Guest, Ryan’s Father Kenny Dusick — 0:06:28 Introduction to Ryan’s Dad & the Origin of “Uncle Kenny” 0:08:53 What Kenny Thought When Ryan invited him on to the Podcast 0:12:36 Kenny’s Relationship to his Mom & to Attention 0:25:03 Duck’s Connection & Relationship to Attention 0:27:49 Realizations through Therapy 0:29:43 Codependency 0:38:23 Kenny Understanding His Mother’s Depression and Suicide 0:42:24 Moving to the “Everything” Room & Kenny’s Dad’s Addiction 0:49:48 Watching Ryan Becoming a Rock-Star 0:54:48 Watching Ryan Fall into Addiction & Leaving the Band 0:57:24 Emerging on the Other Side & Accountability 1:04:54 The “House of Blues Story” 1:13:24 Wrap Up & Conclusion Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

For today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and former drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for a discussion with Brent Smith, lead singer of the iconic Rock Band “Shinedown”. Active in the music scene for well over 2 decades, Shinedown is known for global smash hits like “Second Chance” and “A Symptom of Being Human” among many others. Similarly to Ryan, Brent has made mental health a focal point of his life and music. Having dealt with his own issues within the world of addiction, Brent has come out on the other side more focused than ever on shifting the discussion of Mental Health not just to awareness, but beyond it into solutions and finding help. Through the very conversational style of the discussion, the trio touch on a wide spectrum of topics, including creating powerful music that maintains its vulnerability, leading a team of people with grace and kindness, and avoiding spending too much time on what others think. Sara Bareilles: Putting on a ‘Brave’ Face | #09
For today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and former drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for a discussion with one of the most accomplished singer/song-writers working in the music industry today. Her reputation speaks for itself, and even if you don’t know her, you have certainly heard her music. It's the iconic Sara Bareilles. Sara has spent years balancing the challenges inherent to finding a space in the music industry, and she goes into generous detail about the anxiety and depression she has faced at different points in her life throughout the process. She is a huge advocate for mental health, and while she remains as aspirational as ever, she has also found the importance of saying “No” and creating a safe space in her mind to avoid burnout. Ryan and Sara have a fascinating shared history that dates back to their early days at UCLA. It culminates in a genuine and heartfelt apology from Ryan that is one of the most touching and truthful moments on the Harder to Breathe Podcast to date. Never to be left out, Duck also gets the chance to put on his “fan” hat for a moment and ask some questions regarding Sara’s musical theater career, including what she’s working on next… including a new Broadway musical adaptation of “The Interestings”, a new album, AND several upcoming performances at the iconic Hollywood Bowl music venue featuring a full orchestra. In just an hour, the three share so many incredible moments, and it’s hard not to come away from the discussion feeling great satisfaction that so much success has come to such a lovely person in Grammy Award Winner, and Tony/Emmy nominee Sara Bareilles. 0:00:00 Introduction & Duck’s New Gear 0:00:57 Today’s Guest: Sara Bareilles 0:03:50 Inspirational AND Aspirational 0:05:00 The value of Sara’s Song “Brave” 0:06:00 Sara’s Life and Impact Outside Her Art —-- 0:09:48 Sara Bareilles Joins the Podcast 0:12:10 Fear is an Indicator 0:13:49 Ryan and Sara’s History at UCLA and Beyond 0:19:38 How Therapy Has Opened Sara Up to Embracing Fear 0:21:00 When the Decision to Start Therapy Came About 0:22:57 The Work & Connecting with Your Partner 0:27:51 What Causes the “Walls” Against Intimacy 0:30:12 Navigating Being a People Pleaser alongside Business 0:33:56 “No” is a Full Sentence 0:35:27 Ryan’s Apology to Sara 0:39:40 Challenges When Shifting From “Aspiring” to “Being” 0:44:27 Duck’s Connection to Musical Theater and “Waitress” 0:45:42 Did Sara Feel the Need to Prove Herself in the Theater Space? 0:49:06 Connections Between the Roles Sara Plays on Stage 0:51:57 Sara’s Next Broadway Project: “The Interestings” 0:53:47 Upcoming Full Orchestra Performances 0:56:32 From Cafes to the Hollywood Bowl 0:58:13 Wrap Up & Conclusion More on Sara Bareilles: https://sarabmusic.com/main/ - Official Website https://tour.sarabmusic.com/ - Upcoming Tour Dates https://www.instagram.com/sarabareilles/ - Official Instagram Ready to Dive Deeper?: BenBella Books Author Page - Amazon Book Page - WWSG Speaker Page - Psychology Today Therapist Profile - Stay Up to Date on the Podcast: Follow Ryan on Social Media: IG - LinkedIn - Facebook - Facebook Author Page - X / Twitter - Follow Duck on Social Media: IG - X / Twitter -

Fighting through the ‘GOOP’ | #08
For today’s episode of “Harder to Breathe'', host and former drummer of “Maroon 5” Ryan Dusick is joined by co-host and actor Brian “Duck” Maillard for a discussion with one of the greatest motivational speakers in the game, Entrepreneur, Daredevil, and Author: Peter Sage. Within the first couple minutes of their discussion it’s easy to tell why Peter has had the chance to encourage thousands of people on enormous stages around the globe. The ease in the way he is able to communicate his own experiences and tap into what makes us “tick” is apparent from the get-go, and the tools that he provides, when implemented properly, truly give us the ability to put things into context in a way that is helpful. In their hour-long conversation, the three discuss Peter’s upcoming fundraiser, in which he aims to raise 1 Million Dollars for mental health by rowing across the Atlantic, his time in prison where he was able to transform the lives of many of the inmates, his personal journey from entrepreneur to speaker, and a brief look into the mindset shaping tools he uses in his speaking and personal coaching. It is incredibly engaging, and no matter where you come from or what you have personally experienced, there is sure to be something Peter mentions that will ring true in your own life. It’s a powerful exercise in adjusting your worldview, and you can easily see just how transformative the effects might be when fully taken to heart. 0:00:00 Introduction & Summer Parenting 0:02:41 Duck’s “Fan” Question: Is Ryan Done With Music? 0:14:47 Turning Your Trauma into Your Superpower 0:17:42 Today’s Guest: Peter Sage —-- 0:19:54 What to Know About Peter Sage 0:21:18 Peter’s Row Across the Atlantic 0:22:41 What is the “Dangerous Sports Club?” (And Why Do It?) 0:28:34 How Peter Got Into High-Stakes Athleticism 0:39:34 “Anxiety is the Emotion of Growth” 0:43:27 Peter’s Game– Which Will You Choose? 0:45:52 The Connection to Ryan’s Therapy Work 0:46:51 Does the “Why” (the past) Matter? 0:56:20 Does this Work for Everyone?
