Bonus Ep.: Emily Chats with Coach Carolyn from Wellness While Walking
Hello from just Emily today. John has had some health complications and was not able to record this week. Don’t worry, he is on the mend and we will hopefully have our wonderful host and editor back soon enough! In the meantime, I wanted to bring you this special interview I did in the Hate to Weight Discussion Group with Health Coach Carolyn Cohen from the podcast Wellness While Walking! She’ll be sharing tips for us on our own health and wellness journeys. Watch the LIVE Recording: New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re and so you can listen to all the back episodes! We try our hardest to link to useful resources we have mentioned. If you have any questions, please email . In This Episode: Hear about Carolyn’s journey to becoming a health coach and why she pivoted her life toward helping others with their wellness journeys. She was so kind to share lots of ways we can all get more veggies into our diets, which is a goal I know many of you in the Hate to Weight Discussion Group put up as a goal for our Sunday Goal Posts. She also debunks the myth of getting 10,000 steps as a guideline for those of us who want to walk. If you haven’t checked out her podcast, Wellness While Walking, yet, definitely check it out! John's Whirlwind Week and Delicious Drive-Thru Options
Another week of quarantine and tensions rising. John ended his last episode recording and the rest of his week was a whirlwind of anxiety, sickness and a death scare! But luckily, everyone is OK. Life isn’t easy for many of us, and while staying healthy is important, there’s a lot we’re all juggling. We want to take this opportunity to remind yourself to have grace for yourself and others. Like drive-through? So do we, but we can still make plenty of healthy choices. Watch the LIVE Recording: New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re and so you can listen to all the back episodes! We try our hardest to link to useful resources we have mentioned. If you have any questions, please email . In This Episode: John had quite a week since we last recorded. He starts off the episode talking about how getting BBQ turns into a death scare! John’s audio drops are superb! Thank you to our listeners who get a kick out of them and voted on which sound drops have been your favorite! Who else is susceptible to the power of suggestion? John and Emily are. John has some anxiety over not feeling well. And this is after the earlier death scare! Isn’t it weird that you don’t wake up while your fever’s breaking? Only after you’re all sweaty. Anger and frustration can be such a confusing emotion, especially in how people release it. Don’t forget to apologize! We apologize for the delay in getting out episodes — we really appreciate your patience with our episode releases. John is doing his own yoga poses now and made his own yoga playpen. Only 10 minutes a day! Emily’s enjoying getting her vegetables from Mexican food and Taco Bell lately. We love our fast food here at Hate to Weight and over the years, we’ve found that’s not the worst drive-thru food we could get! The Power Bowl is really filling and not too bad! Emily loves Amy’s frozen burritos. Let us know if you’ve had them and which ones you enjoy! Pulled pork sliders with coleslaw, everyone! It’s delicious! We’re all in a state of Decision Fatigue pretty much all the time. Emily put out this theory and you’ll see a Rolling Stone article about it below in the links section. It’s funny that we talked about this weeks ago, but the mask debate apparently doesn’t get old. Speaking of takeout, the Burger King Impossible Whopper is pretty good! Shout-out to Connecticut’s Duchess Restaurants — they have a great meatless burger, too! #ICantTwitter and #ICantWichYou Emily is done with current events! Why don’t more fast food places have hot dogs? Great #WinningWednesday posts this week! Emily’s session at Livestream For the Cure went great! Spoiler alert: We didn’t do a huge blowout for Episode 100. There was a busy week for current events and we ended up skipping that episode and coming back the following week. Later, Weighters! DDP Yoga, Making Healthy Choices for Weight-Loss, and Some Very Salty Language!
Watch the LIVE Recording: We are starting to focus on making good choices and John is even trying out yoga! We also got a bit carried away with our discussion and we run a little long in this episode. Also, STRONG LANGUAGE ALERT around 55 minutes in — we mark our podcast as explicit anyway, but we want you to know that the C-word is used quite a bit. While we're comfortable saying it, not everyone is comfortable hearing it. We want to be respectful to listeners by giving you an advanced warning if this offends you. When we record this, we are currently in the midst of the Covid-19/coronavirus pandemic. We strive to be as accurate as possible on our podcast, but we are not experts. Please refer to the for information or any questions you may have. New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re and so you can listen to all the back episodes! We try our hardest to link to useful resources we have mentioned. If you have any questions, please email . In This Episode: John’s feeling just PEACHY! Emily is doing Maintenance Mode and doing her thing in her plateau. She can see her progress but still getting comfortable with her “new” body. We’re transitioning the show to be less about looking at the scale, but more about trying to get healthy. John’s worried about getting “stuffocated” by brisket and corn bread. John’s going back to more compression on his legs and the whooshie pill again. What was the last vegetable you ate? Usually when Emily’s in a funk, she’ll ask herself that. Even though Emily finds she doesn’t have to count calories, she still realizes that eating healthy will make Future-Emily happy. John’s thinking of trying yoga! We have a nice big yoga discussion and Emily geeked out because this is her favorite form of movement. John likes to use this podcast as a form of therapy, Emily uses her journal for the same reason. Being able to hear or see your own words can help you get a lot of clarity into what you truly feel. John’s best form of dealing with the news is to find the humor in it, and then the internet arguments start. We have some great #WinningWednesday posts, and we’re putting some new prompts in the group! Gratitude is the Attitude! Emily became a certified life coach — and will soon be certified in mindfulness, as well! Dut-dut! We talk a bit about podcast editing and our workflows toward the end. If you ever wondered what podcast editors do, you might enjoy it! We talk about being people pleasers, both in our work and in our own heads with our self-esteem. STRONG LANGUAGE ALERT! If you are offended by the C*** word, around the 55:00-56:30 mark we say it quite a bit. Oh, we get so silly when we’re procrastinating the weigh-in, LOL. Later, Weighters! A Question About Sweetener and Intermittent Fasting

A Question About Sweetener and Intermittent Fasting
Watch the LIVE Recording: We got a question before the show we spend some time going through about using sweetener with Intermittent Fasting and we go into it a bit. We also talk about how COVID is affecting our lives — we’re in the Northeast so it’s pretty much all around us. And can you tell our ADHD went a little wild on this show? When we record this, we are currently in the midst of the Covid-19/coronavirus pandemic. We strive to be as accurate as possible on our podcast, but we are not experts. We try our hardest to link to useful resources we have mentioned. If you have any questions, please email . In This Episode: Thanks, Corona! John has been finding a lot of his usual favorites are not available in grocery stores as much, oh no! We got a question in our chat (thanks Don!) before going live that we talk about a lot in this episode about using sweetener during Intermittent Fasting. While we are not experts, we explain some of where our information came from that we go by. Neither of us can do cheat days, so it’s interesting to learn how other people use them. Emily is using IF to feel good and no longer to lose weight. She’s in maintenance mode. Are you a rebel and a rule-breaker like John? (And Emily the rule-breaker comes out every so often.) John talks about his opinion about wearing a mask and gives us a very visual analogy about why using a mask is important, oh my! There is a lot of COVID-Talk in this episode. It’s still on the top of our minds. And a lot of our food choices have also been affected. What if we knew there was an asteroid coming to the earth, what would you go out and buy? Emily thought it would be food, but it turns out, when she really thought about it, it would be a pack of cigarettes (and possibly a cigarette holder?) John is finding his anxiety is driving his eating disorder a bit. And we are now noticing just how prone to germs and infection we really are. We are getting a lot of therapy by doing this podcast, especially when John edits and Emily writes the show notes. What do you think of the virus talk? Do we need to cut back? Let us know! Amazing #WinningWednesday posts! Including some virtual workout ideas! Do you look at your phone as soon as you wake up or do you wait a bit? Watch the LIVE Recording: John is wrestling with Impostor Syndrome when thinking about starting a new podcast and we discuss the reactions to Adele’s stunning weight-loss and the picture she posted on Instagram. In This Episode: John is getting ready to start a new podcast and finds himself with Impostor Syndrome. Adele’s Instagram photo she posted recently for her 32nd birthday showed a dramatic weight-loss and we talk a bit about the reactions. John-spiration — “Just because someone else is praised for losing weight doesn’t mean you should be ashamed for not.” John gets motivated by an Inner Drill Sergeant sometimes. What do you think? Are you more motivated by negativity or positivity? Emily has a lot of Marketing (Conspiracy) Theories if you ever get her started on why something or someone is trending. John’s new organizational system is going well! Emily is re-evaluating her own scheduling system and routine, but she still likes to get everything out of her head on paper and work off of that every day. She has also realized losing weight for her is not a priority. She still enjoys Intermittent Fasting and Yoga, but feels like focusing on other areas in life and putting weight-loss into maintenance mode. This isn’t her breaking up with the podcast, BTW! Maintenance Mode is HARD! Emily looks at pictures of Target aisles because she misses it! LOL! Facebook is just like a scrolling tabloid all the time! Emily closes Facebook as soon as she gets angry. She hasn’t been on very often anymore. You’re never going to change someone’s opinion on the Internet. And the best part is, because we can’t go out, it’s not like we even need to see them! Boosting Productivity and Becoming Mindful
Watch the LIVE Recording: Are we in a “New Normal” yet? For us, we both work at home so the dust is beginning to settle, but there are still a lot of changes we haven’t anticipated. John has started a new organizational program and Emily has been adding more veggies to her meals and trying to be more mindful about why she finds herself in the kitchen. We talk a lot about our current situations, which as you may know if you’re listening to this around the time it comes out, is the COVID-19 social distancing stuff. It’s important to mention, as we do every episode, we are not doctors. Please refer to the for information or any questions you may have. New to Hate to Weight? We’re both staying in as much as possible.) Are you already sick of “New Normal” usage? For us, the dust is starting to settle for us. John has begun an organizational program by Carl Pullein (see links below!) John and Emily both have ADHD and are always learning how to navigate with it, which has been a part of our weight problems, as well. We apologize for the delay in episodes lately. We are fixing it as fast as we can and we thank you so much for your patience with us. There are so many things in our lives that we are trying to optimize to help us become more productive with our time. For some people, productivity can bog them down. But for us, we really appreciate routines and systems. John gives his breakfast frittata recipe! Check it out! Emily loves the idea of being proactive before being reactive. “Everybody has a routine and until your routine becomes a habit, you gotta keep working at it.” — This week’s John-spiration! Sometimes, we just want a Food Hug. “What kind of comfort am I looking for?” — Emily when she finds herself in the kitchen. John will hopefully give us more Geese Updates! Emily has decided this week to add more veggies to her diet this week and getting more mindful with her eating, as well. One routine that’s probably NOT good for us is our cereal-eating routine. We get into a discussion about masks. We’re pro-mask, by the way. Emily’s declarations: No tomatoes as a default and please stay 6 feet away! Woo-hoo for the #WinningWednesday posts! Watch the LIVE Recording: Have you had enough? Yes. The answer for all of us is “yes.” Get ready for some silliness in this episode and getting into some woo with Emily and her Ashwagandha (don’t worry, we’ll explain). Join us as we try to lighten your spirits with us! Anyone else find themselves ordering more shelf-stable food than they normally do? Emily has a problem with Cheesy Puffs! Never get her started on the “Essence.” It’s also our two-year anniversary. One thing we’re not dealing with are the bakers at work anymore. It’s amazing the stuff we do for free food. But we make sure not to be the Office Scavenger in a stealth way. (Or so we think) Do you relate? Have you also had secret tricks to eating? Let us know! Email us at Emily’s Cheesy Puffs are John’s Tapioca Pudding. Now that we have the accountability of the podcast, luckily John and Emily don’t run too far amok. John’s actually finding it easier to get the food he needs and he may be getting into a groove. This has made the anxiety subside. Emily is recording an audiobook version of her book in her other Facebook group to get out of her comfort zone. We really appreciate you listening to our vulnerability. Something about this podcast is the truth serum we have needed as a form of therapy. John goes deep into what he thinks about doing affirmations in the mornings. Emily talks about her morning pages and how she follows the moon cycles! Have you ever looked into the cycles of the moon and how our bodies are attuned with it? Emily takes Ashwagandha every morning and talks about it a bit. Everyone’s a little nuts right now. Spirit Week Challenge is Declared!
We’re in yet another week of Quarantine but we’re grateful we’ve been on this health journey together. At the time of this recording, Emily was finishing up a Spirit Week Challenge where she dressed up for theme days every day for a week. And John has decided he’s going to hunker down once he started reading about how those in the obese/morbidly obese camp are more susceptible. Everyone, stay safe out there! We’re so grateful you choose to spend your time with us and we hope we continue to entertain you right now. We talk a lot about our current situations, which as you may know if you’re listening to this around the time it comes out, is the COVID-19 social distancing stuff. It’s important to mention, as we do every episode, we are not doctors. Please refer to the for information or any questions you may have. New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re and so you can listen to all the back episodes! Don’t forget, you can talk to us and other Weighters while we record by going to the Hate to Weight Discussion Group on Facebook. We try our hardest to link to useful resources we have mentioned. If you have any questions, please email . In This Episode: We are Quarantine Crazy. Emily has enacted a Spirit Week Challenge because she is bored of her current wardrobe. Every day had a theme — Monday: Favorite book or movie character; Tuesday: Retro Day — pick a decade; Wednesday: Disney; Thursday: Sports Jersey; and Friday (the day we recorded): All Dressed Up with No Where to Go. Both Emily and John were dressed up and recording Live in the Hate to Weight Discussion Group! Emily is also doing Spirit Week during Shark Week. Emily makes sure to broadcast to everyone, including her uterus, she is not pregnant! John gets to experience a NSV — his suit is now loose! He wouldn’t have known otherwise. Now that Emily has lost weight, she finds that she only wore certain outfits and dresses once before losing too much weight and swimming in them. John’s trying to work the carbs back out of his system. And it’s very hard right now to get fresh produce right now in stores. We’re also freaked out by the viral videos of people doing gross things in super markets. And the salad bar has always been iffy, ugh! InstaCart is so unpredictable, so one shipment came after two weeks, another came in two days. Emily and her husband also tried Shipt and that worked well, too. John is starting to worry about hunkering down, especially for people who are obese/morbidly obese. But he’s getting in an Intermittent Fasting groove again, doing 16-8. Emily has a problem when it comes to new food in the house where she wants to eat all the new snacks and especially comfort food. Emily even has a little moment discussing all the foods she would have as a last meal. Emily was able to get creative while she was waiting for her grocery order and was able to go through her stockpile of food she would buy and forget about. Emily is missing her WaffleFuls! Hoping Brickbox in Stratford, CT, opens up again soon! We’re both missing our fast-food, but turns out, John knows a lot about preparing squirrel meat. Yay for the #WinningsWednesdays! You are all awesome! It’s not just you — every day seems like it’s a week long to all of us. Later, Weighters! We’d love to hear your scale and non-scale victories! This Quarantine Is Starting to Get to Us
Sorry for the late-releasing episodes! We're still trying to adjust our schedules for our own client work, as well as this podcast. We're both adapting to our quarantines and it's a stressful time, for sure. John is a bit hungover on today's episode and has recently shaved his head. And Emily is dealing with a sick spouse (not COVID, thankfully) but it's still stressful on top of everything else. We talk a lot about our current situations, which as you may know if you’re listening to this around the time it comes out, is related to the COVID-19 crisis. It’s important to mention, as we do every episode, we are not doctors. Please refer to the for information or any questions you may have. New to Hate to Weight? Don’t forget to join the Hate to Weight Discussion Group on Facebook so you can see! John is also a bit hungover while recording. Emily has found herself wanting a cigarette. The stress from this whole thing is real, y’all! Thank goodness we can’t go out. Don’t smoke, kids. Ever. And don’t listen to 18-year-old Emily. She’s missing her college vices and has chosen swearing as her current vice to relieve stress. Please! Stay home! Keep your bubble intact and sing some Police if you need to — “Don’t stand so close to me!” John is ready to hunker down until there is a vaccine. He’s getting back into Intermittent Fasting and eventually keto. Emily’s planning a Spirit Week Challenge! Want to spruce up your daily wardrobe? Check it out! Have you ever eaten a typical food so much that you actually get sick of it and never eat it again? We’re coming up on our Two-Year Anniversary of this show. Be prepared — Emily goes into a segment about Easter Candy and the different varieties she loves. Warning: If you are starting Intermittent Fasting, drinking will be a bit different. Take your time because alcohol usually hits differently. Emily is actually missing crowds. Not people — just crowds. “Mental health comes first … but, Pearl Jam!” Thank you to our listener Deb who described our show as a “clubhouse for those losing weight” on Reddit! Should we rename our Facebook group the Hate to Weight Clubhouse. We’re also featured on Feedspot’s Top 20 Weight Loss Podcasts You Should Follow in 2020! Emily’s husband has a cold this week and is doing the work of two parents, plus trying to work, plus dealing with the world as it is. Suffice to say, it’s been a hard week and the journey to getting one clean knife was enough to throw her into a tizzy. In case anyone needs it, Mobile Smash Rooms are a thing! Even though there’s a lot of stress in Emily’s house, she was able to eat some food she doesn’t normally get because her husband is sick. Silver linings. Awesome Winning Wednesdays, everyone! We’re so glad you’re all still working toward your goals with us! Emily’s PMS/Season of Our Discontent is still going on. No pregnancy on the horizon, just stress. Sorry for the later episodes. PMS, Dieting, and Quarantine AKA The Season of Our Discontent

PMS, Dieting, and Quarantine AKA The Season of Our Discontent
This episode was recorded in the beginning of April 2020 for context. We're still getting used to the temporary new-normal of staying indoors and self-quarantining for our own safety. It requires us to learn more planning skills that, luckily, we have already been working on with our own diets. But not like this. In fact, Emily has taken to calling the combination of this + PMS "The Season of Our Discontent". Good thing we still have our sense of humor, although John has deemed himself an Anxetiy-Riddled Hypochondriac Germaphobe. We talk a lot about our current situations, which as you may know if you’re listening to this around the time it comes out, is the COVID-19 social distancing stuff. It’s important to mention, as we do every episode, we are not doctors. Please refer to the for information or any questions you may have. New to Hate to Weight? We try our hardest to link to useful resources we have mentioned. If you have any questions, please email . In This Episode: John starts off the show with a clip of a toddler upset about how she can’t get all her favorite foods and the tantrum that ensues. And that’s pretty much how John’s reacting. We find our habits have changed from everything that’s going on with the coronavirus pandemic. Don’t take vitamins on an empty stomach! Nope! John now identifies as an Anxiety-Riddled Hypochondriac Germaphobe. Do you have triggers for your eating or other habits? That’s one thing we’ve really worked on identifying. We’re also learning how to plan our shopping and eating so we can make our groceries stretch. Emily is celebrating two years of doing Intermittent Fasting! Two years = 90 pounds down = 8 sizes down! It’s weird that this is starting to become a new normal for everyone. Gross-out alert: Both John and Emily admit we both enjoy pizza that’s been left out over refrigerated. Eek! Emily has some morbid curiosity. We apologize in advance. Thank goodness for the #WinningWednesdays posts! We can always use some good news. Thank you for all the memes and affirmations! Emily has now named her PMS —The Season of Our Discontent. Want to boost your immune system? Exercise! Later, Weighters! We’d love to hear your scale and non-scale victories! Weight Loss in a Time of Coronavirus
Heads up: We normally don’t censor ourselves on the show, but we do talk about a very mature podcast a bit in the beginning. If you want to skip all that, we finish talking about it by the 18:00-minute mark. It’s a Pearl-Clutcher! We talk a lot about our current situations, which as you may know if you’re listening to this around the time it comes out, is the COVID-19 social distancing stuff. It’s important to mention, as we do every episode, we are not doctors. Please refer to the for information or any questions you may have. Even though John and Emily are both naturally homebodies, even they are getting a little restless when it comes to being told to Stay Home. And that leads to some stress eating, unfortunately. But we’re figuring things out as we go along, as per usual. New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re and so you can listen to all the back episodes! Do you like the humor and the memes about Quarantine and COVID-19? John finds himself very undisciplined right now and running amok, but at least he’s aware! Our food planning skills are being tested heavily! Especially when it comes to buying enough to eat and also store. We’re all going to forgive John for not stepping on the scale this week because the batteries were dead. Who’s the mean person in your life? Is it you? But John has decided to get some sunshine and fresh air. (Psst: I talked to him later that day and it was a good experience.) Have you heard about Dying for Sex? What do you think? We’re also looking for distractions — something that has nothing to do with current events. Everyone! Big news! Julie Andrews is OK! (There was nothing wrong with her, but Emily worries if she doesn’t get a Julie Andrews update every so often.) Emily is pulling back and taking a look at her business and how it fits into what’s going on. She also is turning off the phone during the day or putting Do Not Disturb on her phone. Be aware of the Scarcity Mentality that many of us are in. This raises our stress and many of us hold onto weight when our stress is up. Thank goodness for yoga, mindfulness and making plans you look forward to. Want to lure Emily out of her house? Offer her food! Gratitude is the Attitude & Stop Touching Your Face!
Heads up: This episode was recorded on March 19th, so keep that in mind if we’re behind on the current events when you listen to this. We were all this together when we were dieting, and now we’re all in this together when it comes to staying home and stopping the spread of COVID-19. This week, we’re starting to get used to our new life of quarantining ourselves and keeping ourselves separated from others. John goes through his grocery routine now and how he sanitizes what comes into his house. Why is it so hard not to touch our faces?! As if we didn’t have trouble planning our meals before, we are trying to survive a crash course in it now! Emily has a bidet attachment and it’s amazing right now! It saves on toilet paper! Would you buy a Used Bidet? Um, no! Are you still enjoying the quarantine memes? We are! Emily has started streaming her work on Twitch (in fact, she’s streaming right now while writing notes!) Have you found you need more breaks from your phone lately? John refused to go to the doctor’s office and is really taking this seriously! Good for him! GRATITUDE IS THE ATTITUDE! Years ago, both of us would have eaten all the crap and been fine. But NO! We wanted to get healthy. Emily has been working on lowering her expectations of other people, as well as herself right now. Sorry everyone for the sound on my end! It seems I used my computer mic, ugggh! — Emily. Let’s encourage John to do more solo episodes! John explains Discord to Emily. Are you on Discord? What do you think? Emily is having a bit of an identity crisis when it comes to social media, so she’s becoming more introspective and playing with her private Instagram. Would you allow a video of yourself dancing online? Emily loved it! Emily has also found that from her daily yoga, she now enjoys dancing! And pretending to know how to dance. I promise, y’all, I am an Introvert! I take a looong time to warm up to people. Podcasters are the best people! We did stupid stuff when we were 18, right?! Emily left her phone in an Uber. If this has never happened to you, check out how she got it back! Emily used the Hate to Weight Voicemail Line to get her phone back. John talks about an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience with an infectious disease specialist. John’s anxiety is up and we both know for us anxiety is an overeating trigger. How are you when it comes to hearing symptoms? We have both realized we hate cooking. We should have named this podcast Hate to Cook. Seriously! Home Ec taught Emily how to follow a recipe, but she can’t come up with a recipe. Emily is looking forward to watching Salt Fat Acid Heat. Have you seen it? Was the movie Outbreak used in your high school class to talk about viruses and how they spread? That’s how Emily learned. Please do your research, everyone! Great job with everyone’s winning Wednesdays! Keep ‘em coming! Delivery is dangerous! “Give me a carrot? Solo Episode with John
John did a solo episode and he did a great job! Emily wasn’t feeling well that day and had to bail. Sorry, everyone — Emily had a headache and didn’t sleep well that night before and had to skip this week. But John took initiative and stepped up when he gained weight the past few weeks. He and his girlfriend, Samantha, worked together with MyFitnessPal and talk every day about their progress. Yay for the Whooshie Pill! (But also, boo to the constant peeing!) We also do a Winning Wednesday! Great job, everyone! John even does a solo weigh-in! Wow! (Sorry, I’m so impressed while writing these show notes! Great job, John!) Later, Weighters! Dieting on Vacation, Running Amok and Couch Jeans from the Universe

Dieting on Vacation, Running Amok and Couch Jeans from the Universe
What happens when you go on vacation while doing Intermittent Fasting? Well, Emily found out on her big family vacation! In fact, it’s a whirlwind of a story, which includes Emily’s actual ideal vacation of driving for hours in nature, calling on her “boot and rally” days from college to get her through taking too many vitamins on an empty stomach, and Couch Jeans from the Universe. Wow. Are these show notes or the back of a family comedy from the ‘80s VHS? Meanwhile, while Emily was away, John spent time with his girlfriend and then ran amok the rest of the time. But it wasn’t an all-at-once thing. It happened gradually. But now, since he’s had to be accountable on the show, he has decided to create a 5-step plan for himself and can hopefully find some local groups to help out. (Suggestions welcome!) New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re and so you can listen to all the back episodes! Don’t forget, you can talk to us and other Weighters while we record by going to the Hate to Weight Discussion Group on Facebook. We record every Thursday at 11 a.m.! Call in your WINS or RANTS anytime! 760-WINNING -— 760-946-6464 In This Episode: Emily is back from a family vacation and, boy, was it interesting! Disneyland, Universal, California and back and feeling like it was straight out of National Lampoon. (OK, no dead relatives on the car.) Best way to rid yourself of Mom Guilt? Being *those* parents on a plane with a screaming child. Emily and her husband were those parents. Eek! But Diet Guilt? Apparently, that’s a thing, as Emily finds out. But because of sickness going through everyone else, she decided to take Zicam outside of her eating window. Because being healthy on a family vacation is probably the best reason to break a fast. SPOILER ALERT: Turns out, it didn’t deter her weight loss at all! :) Are you a Disney food person? Emily loved the food there! “You’re a mom! Come on! College has trained us for this. Boot & Rally!” — When you tell yourself you don’t have the flu, you just took too many vitamins. Even writing these show notes, our sleep schedules are still wonky! Humans are so weird! Seriously! Another exception to Emily’s eating window. Good hibachi. But not California pizza. Sorry, California. Emily loves her shoes she wore to Disneyland. In case you’re curious, they’re Sketchers with Memory Foam. Would you wear “Couch Jeans”? Seriously. But the Couch Jeans from the Universe did provide a wonderful belt for the jeans Emily brought and found out were too big. Emily also had the win of getting down to her wedding weight! But her dress fit completely differently. Please do not send in your theories “You’re gonna wash that story right out of those jeans.” — John After John’s girlfriend left, he was on a muck and continued. More unhealthy choices fell into the cart, bigger portions were being made, and John knew he was in trouble. John heard a podcast from a YouTuber Bridget Phetasy John’s 5-Step Plan: Get back to Intermittent Fasting Get a good breakfast. Slowly start reducing any sugar and carbs. There has to be more exercise. Be more proactive and accountable. John also noticed that he’s been bullying himself when he got on the scale. But we know if we have one bad week, it’s just a week. It’s not our entire life. John also talks about an article (linked below) about Food Addiction and he’s looking for support in his area. “There’s so much shame in being a food addict, that people don’t go. We suffer in silence.” — John John was doing well, but then started gambling and “had outs” — if you know poker, you’ll love John’s analogy! We’re learning how to make these health changes to work for our lifestyle. But let’s get positive! The #WinningWednesday posts get us back into our silly mood. Thank you to our friend Dave Jackson for shouting us out in Podcast Magazine! Woo-hoo! Let us know where you listen! Take a photo of where you are and post it in the Hate to Weight Discussion Group! Emily really geeks out about Star Wars. Beware, it’s truly geeky. John even gives us some Dude Cooking ideas for eggs! Thanks to everyone who joined us for the live chat! Later, Weighters! Dieting Through Hell Week + Accountability Challenge Success!
Emily’s getting ready for a family vacation, on top of crazy work stuff, on top of the current events —it’s a recipe for the perfect storm in Emily’s world and there’s even a funny story about what happens when you throw a rock in the woods, craving mall pretzels, and prom dresses! OK, I’m building up this story a lot, but I promise this episode will be an interesting side of Emily in Panic Mode. In better news, John’s special lady friend is visiting and he is having a ball, but making sure to weigh the options of good, better or best choices. New to Hate to Weight? Emily is getting ready for a big family trip and there’s been a lot of stress in the house. Internet, you’re mad about a stripper pole?! She finally has the day of the Perfect Storm between current events, Shark Week, vacation planning. Thank you to our wonderful listeners for reaching out to John about last week’s episode and his dreams. We really appreciate it and love you so much. We want to encourage you to seek help if you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts. Please call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-273-8255 Emily gets Woo and has a ridiculous moment in the woods. Emily goes for a mall pretzel outside her window (oh no!), but then makes a better choice! John talks about Good, Better, Best Decisions. If you ever see Emily by a body of water and she’s holding a rock, keep walking (or record it for John to laugh at later). Emily has never been to Disney and doesn’t know what to expect, especially as a parent. Johnspiration —”I know this is stressful, but you’ll look back and it will be so much fun.” Flashback to when Emily broke her monitor while recording live! We’ll have to see how changing the window affects Emily when she gets back. Sorry, TGI Fridays! There’s a good chance the show notes from last week still aren’t written, lol! Great job, everyone, with the Accountability Challenge! How did you feel about the Super Bowl? Go Chiefs! Awesome Winning Wednesdays this week! Emily will be on vacation next week so no show! Sorry I couldn’t record another episode I talked about in this show. My son got a stomach bug that day and had to cancel! Ugh. We’ll see you in two weeks! Later, Weighters! Please call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-273-8255 In This Episode: Emily watched Brittany Runs a Marathon — a fantastic movie for us! If you haven’t checked it out, it’s amazing! Available on Amazon Prime. It’s weird watching these movies with people who haven’t ever had weight problems. We also know those friends who say things like, “I can’t do cardio! I lose too much weight too quickly!” One thing about changing yourself is feeling like our friends want to keep us in their little compartments in their minds and in real life. Sam, John’s girlfriend, is coming into town! Yay! And the Super Bowl is coming up, so let’s talk about that food! Emily’s favorite cupcake place has a Buffalo Chicken Cupcake! Would you try it? Are you ready for the best way to eat a cupcake? Cupcake Sandwich! There’s a new “Biggest Loser!” and we get to hear John’s real thoughts on Jillian Michaels. John Judge-mingo might be another alias for John, lol. If someone can’t find you attractive how you are, they are not the person for you. — Great advice from John. Emily mothers John and tells him he doesn’t have time. You’re welcome, future John! Big shout-out to Wellness While Walking by Coach Carolyn. I loved the tip from the podcast about adding more vegetables and LOVES Everything But the Bagel Seasoning on them! Wow! John gives some Dude Cooking lessons from his InstantPot. But, boy, do we have issues with making eggs sometimes. Emily last time, this time John! Emily has an Ask a Skinny Person moment because she’s not used to having her butt hurt from sitting on a bony/less-fatty butt. Emily has started doing affirmations out loud and they really do make a difference. John makes an appointment to see a neurologist for his concussions from years ago. TRIGGER WARNING: John talks about suicidal dreams around the 37:14 mark. We started a Daily Accountability Challenge! Did you join? So many wins for #WinningWednesday! Emily proves she doesn’t know sports — umps in football! Check out Theresa’s art in our group! “She wants to D — Donuts!” Emily’s old walking shoes are too big and they are flattened from when she was heavier. Dieting Changes versus Lifestyle Changes
We had a great discussion in our Facebook group thinking about the lifestyle changes we make to lose weight versus what we are planning on doing once we hit our goal weight and need to maintain. John also had a bout with food poisoning and Emily has shifted her whole schedule to mornings so we're both a little out of our comfort zone. New to Hate to Weight? We apologize if this podcast isn’t always out on Mondays -— like this week! Emily has moved her eating window earlier because of her changing her sleeping schedule to earlier. We talked on last week’s episode about proactive mode versus reactive mode during the day. Emily exploded an egg in her microwave before coming on the show. Apparently, 25 seconds is too long. When you hear us referring to others, it’s our chat room while we record live in the Hate to Weight Facebook group! Deborah posted a question in our group -— how do you balance what you’ll do with your diet versus what you’ll be doing for the rest of your life? What alcohol can you never have again? Emily got a recipe for Easy Italian Chicken Sandwiches and made sandwiches in the Instant Pot (on the Slow Cooker setting) We have our own little recipe section! Should this be an ongoing thing? Our Hate to Cook segment, lol! If you’re going to drink Coke, get it from McDonald’s! There’s a link below about why it tastes so good. Fantastic Winning Wednesday posts this week! Thanks everyone who contributes! Any win is fun to celebrate! This week’s Johnspiration -— “The worst part is throwing a hissy fit and giving up.” We’ve lost 131 pounds between the two of us! WOW! Planning our "Lifing" Toolkit
We both have planning on the brain this week and talk about Proactive Mode vs. Reactive Mode when it comes to our diets, businesses, and life. John has already had a morning! And he even has a realization halfway through the episode and remembers to breathe. He also wants to create a #Lifing Toolbox. Emily changes her schedule and has some adjusting to do. This may or may not be affecting her weight. We’ll see! We also talk a lot about the importance of planning, including how we plan. Emily walks us through her weekly and daily planning and journaling routine, as well. “I can’t wait to miss my kids!” — Emily New to Hate to Weight? John has adjusted his Eating Window for his Intermittent Fasting to One Meal a Day. Emily’s tip: Follow hashtags for the diet you’re doing on Instagram and Twitter so you get inspiration throughout the day. We can’t do math on a podcast! Our usual joke is 2+2=Chicken (Emily wants you to know she was once a math tutor, she swears!) What is your moment of #ImNotEvenSorry? Post it in the group or tag us if you’re following us on social media. John realizes he’s in Reactive Mode all the time! If you’re reading this, take a deep breath! It’ll feel good, we promise ;) We start talking about how we organize ourselves during the day. Emily is very Writey-Downey, are you? We know we do so much better when we set up a plan, even if we end up having to throw it out the window if something happens. John walks us through how his brain lies to him — can you relate? We talk a lot about planning in this episode and different methods, including writing things down and a deep look at Emily’s weekly and daily writing/planning routines. “Limited Time” gets us every time! Emily has realized that her toddler turns her brain to mush by the end of the day and has to adjust her whole schedule. Emily’s porn is counting down to when preschool begins, for sure. She’s going to bed earlier and waking up earlier, when she can have time to herself to plan before anyone wakes up and puts her in reactive mode. We both realize we need to find a release that’s not food. John needs a Lifing Toolbox! 33:06 Emily breaks down her morning pages and how she plans her day. (Thanks for the question, Craig!) She starts with Morning Pages: 3 pages of freewriting, from the book “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron; Then she does a to-do list in a bullet journal style, but separates it into three sections: Self-Care, Work, and Home & Family. Thanks to the Business Fabulous Podcast for giving me the idea to put stickers in my notebook! - Emily Emily can’t wait to miss her kids! We have some AMAZING #WinningWednesday posts! Do you have an audio drama or storytelling podcast you like? Let John know! John’s therapist says food addiction is the slowest, more painful way to kill yourself. Wow! It’s so sad and true! Emily has been doing daily yoga for more than a year now! John is so quotable! In case you’re new to the show, when Emily refers to Shark Week, she’s referring to her period. Later, Weighters! Emotional Eating Triggers and Schedule Changes
Welcome to our new listeners and our new members in the Hate to Weight Discussion Group on Facebook! We’ve seen a few new faces in the group and we’re always excited when you can join us for the live show. No matter where we are in our weight-loss journey, it seems we are constantly testing and adjusting. John’s schedule plus the diuretic he’s supposed to take wreaks havoc on his eating window with Intermittent Fasting. And Emily had a day of Emotional Triggers that would have sent her into a binge-eating tailspin otherwise. And we had a lot of interaction in the chatroom this week, which we always love and appreciate! “One bad day doesn’t make a bad week.” — Annette from our Facebook Group in the Live Chat! In This Episode: John’s trying to get more steps in and is sore today. Welcome to our new listeners! We kind of throw you into the deep end at the beginning of this episode as we explain why we call Shark Week what it is. So, if you are offended by women’s menstruation, turn away now. And while Emily had a day of a bunch of triggers, she realized that after 80 episodes, she finally has the mindset not to run to food! John is testing and adjusting his eating window when it comes to Intermittent Fasting. BUT! He realizes that he doesn’t have to shame himself anymore. Yay! John had a bad recipe experience and we are determined to find a way to enjoy cooking. Emily tried InstaCart for the first time and we got to avoid the Big Kid Toy Aisle of Aldi. John gives us some more Dude Cooking ideas and we want to know, what is the food you can’t make for yourself? Fun Tip: At the beginning of the year, go through your pantry and it’s easy to find the cans and containers that have expired. John JUST realized that Chia Pets come from Chia Seeds! “You DON’T throw out Ferrero Rocher, you just don’t.” It’s always interesting when we have to explain our diets to people. We both really love the science behind Intermittent Fasting and we talk a bit about it. So many great #WinningWednesday Posts! Holiday Recap
We jump right into today’s show and even had to backtrack to record an intro! But don’t worry, John is a great editor and somehow kept our ADHD a little more understandable in the final edit. We’re back from our holiday break and we are feeling the effects, for sure. A lot has happened and whenever John and Emily skip a week of chatting, there’s usually tangents galore, as with this episode. He started the podcast doing keto and intermittent fasting, but is now gearing up for bariatric surgery (probably) later this summer. Emily Prokop is a from Connecticut. She has been doing Intermittent Fasting since April 2018 and has lost about 70 pounds. She started with 16:8 and is now doing 18:6. In This Episode: We went RIGHT into the episode without meaning to, so our beginning may seem a bit different than usual. Emily’s family gets her one of the best water bottles she’s ever gotten … and we get into a little Podcaster Humor about it. Oh! We have a store for our show! We love being able to give people help from our own resources, but we also want people to expect more than just a simple formula. This is the year John is setting goals! One of the things we beat ourselves up over is knowing how to do all the things … but not doing it. UGH! We went on a tangent about giving kids choices. We’ve been known to succumb to McDonald’s “would you like anything else with that?” Have you gone axe throwing? Emily loves it! Emily has been realizing she’s going to become a Hockey Mom. Nothing wrong with that … except how cold it is! Sorry this episode is so ADHD — John and Emily haven’t talked for two weeks and weren’t fully expecting to record this episode. Emily didn’t put out cookies for Santa — it was outside of his window ;) Check out our friends’ podcast, Talkng Fat! If you like this show, you’ll love them! If You Fail to Prepare, You Prepare to Fail
We’re getting back into the swing of things in this episode. John has a good week, aside from a late-night craving. Emily stops focusing on the scale and instead focuses on the benefits of Intermittent Fasting. We’re asking for a lot of feedback for this episode! In This Episode: John’s having a great week, especially since he doesn’t have to wrap his legs anymore, which was really eating a lot of his time. John’s friend is going for skin removal surgery and he’s following her journey for inspiration. What do you think our Cover Art Mascot’s name should be? Emily + Dilemma = Dilemma-ly. Did you know there was a “hunger hormone”? Emily is loving green tea, but John can’t have it. He gets too jittery, even though the caffeine is much less in green tea than coffee. You can be an AARP member, no matter what your age is! Why do copycat recipes have to be so difficult?! Hey! Thanks for reading our show notes! Are you participating in #NoSugarDecember? Finding Control and HappyLights!

Finding Control and HappyLights!
John had a night where he ordered pizza and wings and is trying to find some of what Janet Jackson sings about, Control! Emily has a list of fun new ideas she’s tried the past week to get happy, get cooking, and get warm. We really go off on some tangents this week, but John has decided to bring more energy to the show, and Emily tries to remember her pun skills. Get ready because this episode is a little off the walls! New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re and so you can listen to all the back episodes! Don’t forget, you can interact with us while we record by going to the Hate to Weight Discussion Group on Facebook and we record every Thursday at 11 a.m.! She has been doing Intermittent Fasting since April 2018 and has lost about 70 pounds. She started with 16:8 and is now doing 18:6. In This Episode: John is shot out of a cannon for this episode! Emily tries so hard for a pun … it does not go well. We refer to Emily’s very first podcast, Classy Little Podcast. John is jamming to Janet. (Miss Jackson, if you’re nasty.) Back in the day, John was Funky Cold Jamingo. Do you have an air fryer? What do you think? Taco Bell, what is going on with your menu? You don’t need chicken! Do you pick a word of the year? John’s for 2020 is CONTROL, Emily’s is BALANCE. Emily cannot rap. Ugh. It’s embarrassing that she tried. Emily is COLD! All the time! Emily thinks she has a fear of success … but is it really fear of failure? Dr. John is in! And he gives some wise words (from the movie “Hope Floats” lol) We had a few members of our group who participated in NaPodPoMo last month. Congratulations, Dave, Adam, and Paul! Emily reads the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder and it’s sounding pretty familiar to us. Emily got a HappyLight to help with SAD. Bed, Bath & Beyond is the best! Emily has also fallen in love with Ready Chef Go bags that are so easy to cook! She has also started enjoying green tea and wait until you find out what “Russian Novel Hour” is and how wonderful it is! If you taste too much fish when you take Fish Oil, drink more water! We went LOOOONG this week, including two weeks’ worth of #WinningWednesdays! Later, Weighters! We’d love to hear your scale and non-scale victories! Come celebrate your wins over in the ! Staying Accountable to Your Diet During the Holidays

Staying Accountable to Your Diet During the Holidays
We couldn’t get on Facebook for the Live Show, bu we still recorded. We actually recorded on Thanksgiving, before the feast, which worked out well for the weigh-in. John has some big news for us —he has been cleared by his therapist for weight-loss surgery! Yay! He also gives us a quick Dude Cooking recipe for vegetable soup and we talk about getting more vegetables in, even though it’s been too cold (for Emily) for a salad lately. From John and Emily, we hope you have a wonderful holiday season and we hope you extend grace to yourself. It’s a very eating-centric time of year and people tend to beat themselves up the most. We want to help keep you accountable to yourself and your health and we are so grateful you’ve joined us for this podcast! New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re and so you can listen to all the back episodes! Don’t forget, you can interact with us while we record by going to the Hate to Weight Discussion Group on Facebook and we record every Thursday at 11 a.m.! In This Episode: We couldn’t get on Facebook for the live show because Facebook and Instagram were down. Sorry! (I couldn’t even upload our video. That kept crashing, too! Sorry! — Emily) What are you thankful for? Also, Emily was not prepared for this question and went right to food. John is grateful for his therapist and has some big news! Big congratulations to John, his mental health has been cleared to get the bariatric surgery! Now it’s just a matter of hitting a goal weight. What is with our kids trying to kill us?! Emily ate more vegetables this week, even though it’s been too cold for salads. Dude Cooking vegetable soup recipe: three bags of frozen vegetables in a crock pot with chicken broth. Do you like playing with food in your teeth? We referred back to Harriet Morris, Emily’s eating coach and her games to avoid binge-eating. Are you an Aldi fan? They have a lot of gluten-free stuff! John is comparing the benefits of Intermittent Fasting vs. Keto. It’s awesome that food manufacturers add more information to the package to help us make easier decisions. But the more we find out about nutrition and food information, the more informed we can be about what we put in our bodies. The memes in our Facebook group are awesome! We love when you post them because they always make us laugh! John plans the next few weeks of weight loss. Have you heard of sous vide cooking? Emily’s husband loves doing it and he’s testing it out on the Thanksgiving turkey. Sorry we couldn’t do our Winning Wednesdays this week because we couldn’t get on Facebook! Just remember, one day of eating will not ruin all your weight-loss. Emily found herself in Two-terville (where the first number on the scale is a 2) but, phew! She goes back to One-derland. Reverb — great for singers, horrible for podcast editors. Did you know Emily can play guitar and juggle? We get into a bit of banter about The Beatles Thanks to our friend Dave Jackson for giving us a shout-out! “Comparison is the thief of joy.” —Theodore Roosevelt Sorry I couldn’t get the video up in our group! It was too big and would not load :( Don’t forget to give yourself some grace! Later, Weighters! We’d love to hear your scale and non-scale victories! Come celebrate your wins over in the ! Mindfulness and Learning to Sit with our Feelings (is hard!)

Mindfulness and Learning to Sit with our Feelings (is hard!)
A big thank you to everyone who nominated and voted for Hate to Weight in the Discover Pods awards. We didn’t win, but we are thrilled to have been nominated! John has been learning to sit with his feelings, at the urging of his therapist who he has been seeing to get ready for bariatric surgery. And we’re finding out that sitting with our feelings and trying not to go into the fight-or-flight response is much harder than just trying to fight them. But it’s necessary for true weight-loss and to keep from sabotaging ourselves. Emily is dealing with Shark Week (what we call the week of her period) on top of weeks of sickness in the house and her weight-loss has been temporarily put on hold. But we have faith that we can make it through and we know it won’t always be like this, even though when we’re in the throes of it all, it can seem overwhelming and never-ending. But luckily, we have some amazing #WinningWednesday posts this week! New to Hate to Weight? Make sure you’re and so you can listen to all the back episodes! Don’t forget, you can interact with us while we record by going to the Hate to Weight Discussion Group on Facebook and we record every Thursday at 11 a.m.! Call in your WINS anytime! 760-WINNING -— 760-946-6464 Meet Your Hosts: John Bukenas is a from New Jersey. In This Episode: Thank you to everyone who nominated and voted for Hate to Weight in the Discover Pods awards! And congratulations to Sex with Emily who won in the Health & Fitness category! Do you love or hate “The Office”? John hates it! John’s learning to sit with his feelings, and this is an important step in our weight-loss journey. Mindfulness sounds “easy,” but when it comes to validating your own feelings and realizing the stories we tell ourselves, it’s incredibly difficult to learn. Both John and Emily have ADHD and there is a side of ADHD that comes with anxiety and possibly spiraling. We are both without our usual vices, so we have to find a whole new way to cope with our feelings. It’s still new to us and we’re still getting used to it. Emily is so sick of the generation wars. Stop it! Sorry we didn’t quite stay on the topic of weight-loss this week. We know how to diet — but we are learning to deal with the emotions and that’s the hard part. Did you know John’s stage name? John Jamingo! How we’re getting out our thoughts: Emily keeps morning pages and has a release jars for scraps of paper of her worries, and John has started recording his thoughts into the microphone. Oh, and it’s Shark Week for Emily and she is in hibernation mode, plus being sick and tired of being sick and tired. In case you need to hear this: You won’t always feel like this. This is only temporary. This is not the rest of your life. Also, no one has it all figured out. Did you know that checking something off your to-do list releases dopamine? How “Emily” is that? Emily gives some of her tips for productivity and chasing that dopamine. Comparison is the thief of joy! We love memes in the Facebook group! Feel free to share ALL your victories over there! Emily’s Weekly Weigh-In summed up: I’m not even sorry! John helps us come back during our Weigh-In! Later, Weighters! From the graphic John talks about for Signs You Need a Break: Losing interest in things you’re usually passionate about and bring you joy. Short temper and east to provoke. Taking everything personally. Constantly overthinking. Emotionally Overwhelmed. Always Exhausted/Tired We’d love to hear your scale and non-scale victories! Come celebrate your wins over in the !
