095: What Public Speakers Can Learn From Actors and Performers With Public Speaking Coach Adriana Baer
Ever been in front of a crowd with your heart racing, palms sweating, and mind in overdrive? Yep, I've been there too. That's why today, I'm excited to take you on a backstage journey into the fascinating world of public speaking. And who better to guide us than Adriana Baer, a stellar coach who equips leaders with powerful speaking skills, drawing from her rich theater background. Adriana opens up about how her theatrical past not only helped her face her own fears but also how it serves as a unique toolkit to empower her clients. She focuses on fostering a genuine connection with the audience, aligning with their goals, and digging deep to find that motivation. We dived deep into how a well-crafted narrative can completely transform your speech, keeping your audience hooked. Adriana graciously shared her method of helping clients achieve the perfect mix of structure and flexibility in their speeches. We also touched on the high-energy Disrupt HR format, where the challenge is to deliver an impactful presentation that's tailored to various events and caters to diverse learners. I also threw in a few of my insights on slide design - a topic that sparks quite a debate. But, a perfectly designed speech can fall flat without authenticity, right? So we plunged into a candid conversation about this crucial element. Adriana shared a hilarious anecdote where she found herself unintentionally mimicking an "NPR personality" on her podcast. We emphasized the importance of voice warm-ups, truly living the words we speak, and ensuring our presentations echo our authentic selves. Addressing the ever-present fear of public speaking, Adriana drew fascinating parallels between speaking and singing, delving into the psychological ties that bind the two. We concluded with practical tips on overcoming stage fright and where to find more of Adriana's incredible resources. Show Highlights: How Adriana's theater background differentiates her from many public speaking coaches who might come from corporate backgrounds or are professional speakers themselves. The framework of crafting a message and delivering it with impact. Why understanding internal roadblocks, like mental and emotional barriers, is key to effective public speaking. How using an acting technique, and creating an "audience character" can provide a clear focus for speakers, and ensure that their message resonates. Why using frameworks and structure can be more powerful and relatable for delivering a message than memorizing a speech. Slides or no slides? Adriana shares her perspective. The science behind the power of storytelling, and how it creates connection. What many popular speakers do wrong, and what great ones do right. 091: Creating High-Impact Presentations and Building a Profitable Speaking Business With Jennifer McClure and Dr. Daniel Crosby [Replay]
I’ve had the best job in the world for over 10 years now - where I have the privilege of speaking on stages and in training rooms to groups of leaders around the world about how to increase their influence, focus strategically, and make a positive impact at work and in life. When I stepped out on my own in 2010 to start my business, I had a little bit of experience, a healthy dose of confidence, and a whole lot of hope that I could build the relationships, and create impactful presentations that would result in a successful speaking business. But like a lot of things in my life where I tend to jump off the cliff first, and then think about my parachute later, I wasn’t fully prepared for what it would take to find my lane, to determine how to set my speaking fees, or how to become a recognized expert. So, queue admission into the school of hard knocks, where I’ve gained quite an education along the way, and as a result, have ultimately managed to build a business and life that I truly love. Last year, my friend Dr. Daniel Crosby - who is a great public speaker himself, and was a also my guest on episode 14 of the Impact Makers Podcast, where he talked about understanding human behavior to do well, do good and do you - asked if I would join him on his Standard Deviations podcast to talk about what it takes to create great presentations -- and if you’re into that kind of thing, how to actually get paid to speak, which is one of the most frequently asked questions we both receive. Over a year later, the content of our conversation is still accurate and timely, and I continue to hear from people in Dr. Crosby’s audience who have found it helpful. So I asked him if I could share it with you today, and if you’re interested in crafting great presentations, and/or getting paid to speak, I think you’ll find it helpful. Topics Discussed In This Episode: My path from HR executive to professional speaker, and why I felt like I needed at least 20 years of work experience before starting. How giving away 10% of my time to help others helped me to get started as a speaker, and discover the work that I truly loved. My personal recipe for crafting a great presentation. What comedians and preachers can teach us about giving great presentations. What adult learning theory tells us about what makes for a good speech. Strategies for determining your speaking fee, what can happen if your price is too low, and how to get paid more. Three books that I recommend for speakers to help with picking a lane, determining your pricing strategy, and building a memorable brand. What Dr. Crosby did that 10x’d his speaking revenue. 3 concrete steps to take to build a profitable speaking business. As an entrepreneur, I’ve also been fascinated by how something that began as an idea became a single podcast – then became a vibrant network of podcasts, web shows, blogs, and more – all while Zach was working full-time in leadership roles in HR, change management, DE&I, and strategy and growth for several large organizations. Listen in as we explore the significance of authentic conversations and the impact that they can have in creating a more inclusive workplace. Plus, Zach will reveal some exciting new plans for his future, which include making Living Corporate his ONE job - instead of a second job. He talks about developing a learning platform using AI technology, providing organizational assessments, and launching the Living Corporate Collective - an online space for those passionate about workplace fairness to collaborate for systemic change. Get ready to be inspired, challenged, and motivated to take action. Whether you're a people leader, a diversity advocate, or an aspirational ally, this episode will leave you better informed to make a positive impact in your own community by creating spaces where all voices are valued and can be shared and heard. Derik founded Bodysights body language training to help leaders and organizations to notice key nonverbals during interviews, client interactions, investigations, performance reviews, and negotiations. In our discussion today, we’ll talk about the importance of reading and understanding body language and the impact it can have in various contexts, as well as how understanding these concepts can help leaders to foster stronger relationships, make better-informed decisions, and navigate complex interpersonal dynamics more effectively. Topics Discussed In Today’s Episode: The power of nonverbal communication and its impact on human interactions. The limitations of relying solely on body language for determining truthfulness and the importance of considering other factors. 076: Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile to Build Your Personal Brand and Grow Your Career
Although social media has changed and evolved over the last couple of decades, it’s still a valuable place to be – to learn from, connect with others, establish your credibility, build your personal brand or business brand, and grow your career. While there are tons of places we can hang out online these days, many of which offer limited value for our work pursuits, there’s no doubt that LinkedIn – the “professional” social network that’s been around since 2002 – is still a place where you need to be visible online. It is worth the investment of your time, especially if you’re looking to grow your career and your business as well as attract opportunities. LinkedIn is pretty straightforward. Simply create a profile, connect with people, post and share your content, etc. However, you may not be getting the most out of it as you would if you were to create an intentional strategy for using LinkedIn. 074: My Mother’s Legacy: What It Means to Be an Impact Maker
Who is the first person that comes to your mind when asked who has made an impact on your life? Well, if you had asked me who has been an impact-maker in my own life, then my answer would be my mother. But her legacy is so much more than the impact she has had on my life. My mother died at the age of 83 in 2020. I don't have any hurt or pain around her passing because I truly believe she was living her best life. She was a woman of faith, who lived a life of service. She was a person who reached out to others and gave something without expecting something in return. This episode includes some personal reflections on my mother’s life and her impact on me and others. Hopefully, this will remind you that you're never too old or too inexperienced to step out in faith. Show Highlights: The three pillars of successful aging The importance of a social network of friends for longevity Writing bible verses on index cards What to do when you find yourself living a life you had not planned Being good stewards of the things we allow into our visual and auditory What it means to impact other people Subscribe and Review We’d appreciate you subscribing to this podcast and leaving an Apple Podcasts review. 073: 10 Activities Leaders Must Embrace to Lead With Impact in the Future of Work
As we close out 2022, I’m focusing this month on how I can best prepare myself – and you – for a successful 2023. In my world, this time of year is typically filled with prediction posts and podcasts, where thought leaders share what they believe will be the challenges and opportunities ahead in the new year, related to the world of work. Since my focus is on preparing leaders – like you – to embrace the future of work, and to develop the skills necessary to lead with impact, instead of making predictions that may or may not come true, I’m sharing with you 10 areas that are critical for leaders to focus on, in order to lead with impact in the future of work. 1. Fight for Flexibility for Your Team Members People want to effortlessly work how, where, when, and for whom they want. 40% of respondents in McKinsey’s published in September 2021, said that Flexibility was the number one reason they accepted their current job. According to Shiftboard’s , scheduling is the #1 complaint of hourly workers and the #1 cause of turnover. 85% of the hourly workers who participated in the survey reported that scheduling affects their overall job satisfaction. 2. Prioritize Career Growth and Development Opportunities for Your People According to , the number one reason given by employees who took a new job as to why they would leave again was the lack of career development opportunities. The same survey revealed that 54% of the employees surveyed reported that their employers either don’t take their future interests and aspirations into consideration enough or not at all. 3. Help Your People to Connect with Meaning and Purpose in Their Work Connect people to something bigger than themselves and help them contribute. , a 10% improvement in employees' connection with the Mission or Purpose of their organization leads to an 8.1% decrease in turnover and a 4.4% increase in profitability. I love this quote from Laszlo Bock – the current CEO & Co-founder of Humu and former Google SVP of People Operations -> “The single biggest thing you can do [as a leader] is make the work feel meaningful.” What is an organization’s Purpose? It’s what we do for our customers. Some good examples: Nourishing families so they can flourish and thrive - Kellogg We fulfill dreams of personal freedom - Harley Davidson We help people get jobs - Indeed.com 4. Commit to Real Change and Action with Your Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Efforts Set meaningful goals Track progress Hold leaders accountable Incentivize leaders To learn more about how to do this, check out 5. Invest in Your Leaders – Specifically Front-Line Supervisors The biggest gains businesses will witness in the future will come from hiring and training the right managers, who care for, develop, and maximize the strengths of every single employee. . (Based on meta-analytics of 100 million employee interviews – Gallup) 6. Focus On Skills Identification and Development Quote from Jonas Prising - Chairman & CEO of ManpowerGroup: “Helping people to pre-skill, upskill and reskill for in-demand roles in this Skills Revolution remains the defining challenge of this decade. It was important before the pandemic and is even more critical now – to create a better workplace where everyone is able to unleash their full human potential and have a more equitable share of the prosperity.” 7. SEE Your People Show Appreciation. Give Recognition. Value Differences. According to the results of a , 63% of employees who are regularly recognized were “very unlikely” to look for a job in the next 6 months, and 89% of employees who are rarely recognized are open to accepting a new job. The number one reason why people left a job without another one in hand was uncaring leaders. - 8. Grow Yourself Own your Personal Development. Set goals, track your progress, and hold yourself accountable. Challenge yourself to learn aspects of business and leadership that are not within your current responsibilities. 9. Develop Your Influence Invest In relationships. Build trust. Share your ideas. “You don’t get influence through control. You get influence through other people’s positive experience of you. You get influence through people wanting you involved - not by telling them you have to be.” — Neil Morrison – Former Group HR Director, Penguin Random House now Group HR Director at Severn Trent Water 10. Embrace (and lead) Disruption. Change is a constant. Stay curious and seek out ways to lead change efforts. Subscribe and Review We’d appreciate you subscribing to this podcast and leaving an review. 069: Prioritizing Self-Care to Ensure Your Best Performance and Highest Impact
Self-care isn’t selfish. It is necessary. We truly can’t pour from an empty cup and we can’t help others if we’re emotionally worn, completely stressed out, or too sick to help. In this episode I’m talking about self-care and the five areas I’ve been trying to improve for the sake of myself, my family and my business. I’ll talk about the importance of sleep, rest and exercise, for our physical and mental well-being. Then I’ll dive into the effects of gratitude on our happiness. I’ll also discuss how caring for others can be a form of self-care. Lastly, I’ll cover caring for your time. Finding balance and reclaiming your time can have a lasting impact on your life and I’m going to share how it changed mine. My goal is to help you understand the importance of self-care and how to practice it, proactively, without feeling guilty. I hope you enjoy today’s show. Show Highlights: What is self-care? I’ll give you my favorite definition and share a great quote to help you remember why it’s so important. I’m going to share the five key areas of self-care and give you tips for each area. I’ll share my stories about those areas too. I can’t stress enough the importance of being proactive with self-care. Our bodies speak to us, sometimes loud and clear. If we don’t listen, the consequences can be devastating. We’re talking about self-care but I’m also going to share how caring for others is a form of self-care. Self-care has a physical, mental and emotional impact on our lives, our bodies and on those around us. Supporting Resources: Workplace from Meta: .
