BONUS - LA Wildfire Relief: How the Jewelry Industry Can Help
Hi, Sparklers! There’s no regular episode this week, but I wanted to take a moment to share how you can support relief efforts for the Los Angeles wildfires. Some of you know I live in Glendale, CA—thankfully, both my family and our home are okay. We evacuated early Wednesday morning and stayed with relatives in San Diego. It was scary to walk into the backyard to pack the car and see the sky pitch-black, with flames glowing on the horizon and palm trees whipped by hurricane-like winds—something I never could have imagined. Looking at the sky and the fire maps, it was clear this was going to be very, very bad. If you’d like to help those who’ve been impacted, there are a few ways to lend your support. Let’s talk about where you can give and how you can make a difference. Jewelers of America & Diamond Council of America Jewelers Relief Fund: Accepting donations to support jewelry retailers and manufacturers affected by the wildfires. Donations are tax-deductible and go directly to those businesses that have suffered damage. Donate here or apply for assistance if your jewelry business has been damaged: Jaime Gellar Jewelry Jamie Gellar Jewelry lost its Pacific Palisades storefront to the fires, along with Jamie’s family home and one of her children’s schools. Her small but dedicated team packed up the safe and evacuated on Tuesday, expecting to return on Wednesday. Jamie has now set up a GoFundMe to support her business and employees—you can find the link in the show notes. California Fire Foundation The California Fire Foundation, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization, provides emotional and financial assistance to families of fallen firefighters, firefighters and the communities they protect. Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation The LAFD Foundation provides vital equipment and funds critical programs to help the LAFD save lives and protect communities. Many jewelry brands are currently donating all or part of their profits to wildfire relief efforts. If you’re in the market for a new piece of jewelry, consider supporting a brand that’s also contributing to this important cause. I’ve lived in Los Angeles for almost nine years, originally moving here to pursue a career in the jewelry industry because it’s such a thriving hub for so many brands I admire. My business started here too. It’s heartbreaking to see our city—already struggling in many ways—face such an unimaginable disaster. And my last thought today - I also want to remind everyone to be thoughtful with marketing during times of crisis, even if the disaster isn’t in your own backyard. Take a moment to consider what others may be experiencing before hitting “send” or posting something; empathy and sensitivity can make a meaningful difference. I know it’s not always easy to stay aware of the challenges people may be facing in our global economy, but it’s part of modern marketing to remain mindful and considerate. In this introduction to the new year, I want to discuss a pressing topic—how social media, especially Instagram, will play a role in jewelry marketing this year. In case you haven’t heard, Meta recently announced that it will fill Facebook and Instagram with AI-generated bots. According to Connor Hayes, Meta’s VP of product for gen AI, "We expect these AIs to actually, over time, exist on our platforms, kind of in the same way that accounts do. They’ll have bios and profile pictures and be able to generate and share content powered by AI on the platform." Meta believes this will offer new ways for users to engage and interact on both platforms. However, I think it’s already frustrating many people who feel that Meta is saturated with AI content and bots. In a May 2024 article, tech writer Jason Koebler says, "Facebook is the zombie internet, where a mix of bots, humans, and accounts that were once humans but aren’t anymore interact to form a disastrous website where there is little social connection at all." I promise this isn’t a doom-and-gloom episode. I’m not thrilled by the news either, and as a marketer, it’s frustrating. At the same time, it motivates me to figure out how to use social media marketing effectively while we still can, and also to find ways to reduce our reliance on it. In this episode, I’ll be talking about what I see coming for Instagram in 2025, and how you can leverage those changes without making yourself crazy. One of my favorite quotes about resistance to change is from Harvard Business Review: "Change is resisted when it makes people feel stupid." It's a powerful reminder of why change can be so challenging. So, how do you navigate change as a business owner and communicate it to your audience and customers? This episode is all about embracing change gracefully and guiding your customers through a smooth transition, so they don't feel lost. Change is uncomfortable, but we're going to tackle it head-on. In today's episode, I want to paint a picture of what it's like to have marketing support in your business because it can feel abstract and nebulous until you experience it. Most of our clients come in with a specific idea of what the journey will look like. However, by the end of six months, they realize it’s nothing like what they had imagined—they really don't know what they don't know. I can totally relate to this feeling. Recently, I had a call with a tax strategist and felt completely out of my depth. Like, it was kind of embarrassing how much I didn't know, but that's life - it's a constant journey of discovering and learning. And it’s incredible how working with an expert can open up a whole new world you didn’t even know existed. There’s a quote by the late writer David Foster Wallace, from a commencement speech he gave called "This Is Water", and I think it sums this up perfectly: "There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says "Morning, boys. How's the water?" And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes "What the hell is water?” And that's what this episode is all about. In today's episode, I want to discuss the importance of quality over quantity in email marketing and how to maintain a healthy subscriber list. This topic arose because I've noticed a significant increase in spam subscribers on my clients' lists recently, and I've heard similar stories from others in the marketing community. This issue, known as "list bombing," is described in Klaviyo's support documentation as "a malicious attack where the attacker exploits a signup form or checkout page by making a large number of fake submissions, filling the associated list with emails and phone numbers that have not consented or are invalid." Although a rise in email subscribers might appear beneficial for your brand at first glance, it only holds true if all the new contacts are genuine. Sending emails to these fake profiles can harm your deliverability, as your emails might get caught in spam traps. You'll also see a decline in your open rates. Later in this episode, I'll delve deeper into list bombing and share ways to protect yourself against it.
