90 Second Podcast - 3 Amazing Health Transformations
Hello everyone, welcome back to Peak Human. This is a different kind of episode. It's going to be three 90 second podcasts. It's my new idea to fill in the gaps between peak human episodes. I do these short episodes with really interesting people I find around the internet with amazing health stories, valuable stuff in 90 seconds, really cool reels. I put together, put them out on Instagram and also bundle them up and put them out as a little podcast. And so, yeah, in the meantime, go back and listen to the old episodes. Start back at episode one. So many great ones out there. And you may have heard , my company is not selling meat anymore. We gave it a good run, but there's no profit on real food. I learned how the world works. Part 218 - How to Opt Out of the Sickcare System w/ Andy Schoonover
Andy Schoonover is the founder and CEO of CrowdHealth, a company that aims to revolutionize the healthcare payment system through crowdfunding. Schoonover's journey into healthcare innovation was sparked by a personal experience when his daughter needed a simple medical procedure, resulting in an $8,000 bill that their insurance refused to cover. This frustration with the traditional health insurance system led him to create a more transparent and supportive alternative. CrowdHealth operates in all 50 states and offers members a way to manage healthcare costs through a monthly subscription model and crowdfunding for medical expenses. The platform emphasizes transparency, affordability, and personalized support, providing services such as bill negotiation, discounted prescriptions, and access to virtual care. In this episode Andy Schoonover and I talk about the foundation and mission of CrowdHealth, aiming to revolutionize the traditional insurance industry. Schoonover narrates his motivations stemming from personal dissatisfaction with conventional healthcare systems, leading to the creation of an alternative that promotes healthier lifestyles and aligns financial incentives with wise health choices. The discussion broadens to the concept of rationalizing detrimental behaviors by large entities for financial gain, and how such practices negatively impact society's well-being. Part 211 - The #1 Trick To Not Get Fat - From Acclaimed Scientists Raubenheimer & Simpson
Dr. Stephen J. Simpson and Dr. David Raubenheimer are renowned scientists known for their work in the field of nutritional ecology. Their research primarily focuses on understanding how organisms, including humans, regulate their intake of nutrients and how this affects their health and behavior. Dr. Stephen Simpson is an Academic Director of the Charles Perkins Centre and a Professor in the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney. His research has spanned several disciplines, from studying locusts to human obesity, and he has been influential in developing the field of nutritional ecology. Dr. David Raubenheimer, also affiliated with the University of Sydney, holds the Leonard P. Ullmann Chair in Nutritional Ecology. His research involves the study of nutrition and its effects across a wide range of species, including humans. He has worked extensively on the concept of nutritional geometry, which is a framework for understanding how animals and humans make decisions about what and how much to eat. Together, Simpson and Raubenheimer developed the "Protein Leverage Hypothesis," which suggests that the protein content of the diet can strongly influence total energy intake and thus has significant implications for understanding obesity. Their collaborative work has been pivotal in highlighting the complex interactions between diet composition, appetite, and health, making significant contributions to both basic biology and implications for human health and nutrition. BUY THE MEAT Preorder the film here: SHOW NOTES: (08:00) Every species studied in their natural, undisturbed environments thrive in their nutritional balance. (16:32) The protein leverage hypothesis (see study: .) posits that we have a preference for protein over other macronutrients, and that the amount of protein we consume influences our appetite for carbs and fats afterwards. (28:07) Eating more, per se, isn’t the problem. It’s when that food is higher in energy density than fiber that leads to overeating and, by extension, obesity. (38:58) Much of the fruit we eat is not entirely natural due to the modification they go through in farms. (46:02) Over time, our bodies have adapted to thrive in the environment in which human beings find themselves. Today, we continue to adapt, but not necessarily for the better. (54:18) Even our circadian biology has been shaken up through modern sleep patterns and our supplementation with sleep pills and caffeine. Ana Rosa, MD, PhD is a physician, Radiologist, Body fellowship trained, alumni of the University of Minnesota, medical doctor at the VA healthcare system, and assistant professor at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Rosa has done two radiology residencies, one in Brazil, and one in the United States, obtained a doctorate degree, had done a body imaging fellowship, and also has published in medical journals and helped writing Imaging books in Brazil with 25 years of practice in the Imaging field as a Radiologist. Dr. Rosa shares with us her imaging knowledge of visceral fat, the importance of its detection and description in the reports, guiding the patients and the ordering providers by the findings on cross-section imaging such as MRI scans. The podcast intention is to bring awareness on how to detect a simple and easy biomarker such as visceral fat on MRI scans making it easier for patients to advocate for health and follow up for results. Dr. Rosa shares with us how to create quality of care in service for education and interaction between patients, providers and Radiologists in sharing her own story on how to heal from inside out by literally “seeing” a “silent” metabolic active killer that visceral fat represents and taking action to change the presence status quo And move towards optimizing health. SHOW NOTES (06:37) In medical school, healthcare professionals are trained to describe diseases while overlooking how visceral fat and metabolic health contributes to them. (15:52) Visceral fat is a major culprit when it comes to various metabolic issues. (28:04) The first step to prevent disease is to look for signs of inflammation. (31:17) While it’s possible to request your MRI scan from your doctor, most providers won’t know how to make use of it. (44:02) Health is not limited to staying alive. Health is also appearance and performance. (53:58) For doctors, another benefit of learning to deal with patients carrying high amounts of visceral fat is potentially minimizing burnout.
