Championing Change: How Benjamin Gardner Uses Pickleball to Create Kindness and Community

Championing Change: How Benjamin Gardner Uses Pickleball to Create Kindness and Community
At just 11 years old, Benjamin Gardner is proving that kindness, creativity, and purpose can spark powerful change. Alongside his dad, Kyle, Benjamin shares how his love for pickleball led to the creation of Stinger Prints—a small business with a big heart. What started as a 3D-printed bag tag has grown into a ripple of generosity supporting the Kansas City Stingers Youth Foundation. Through entrepreneurship, giving, and community, Benjamin reminds us that no one is too young to make a difference and that the best businesses are built with heart. Key Takeaways: Kindness and creativity can turn a simple idea into something with lasting community impact. Giving back creates joy—not just for others, but for yourself. You’re never too young to lead with purpose and make a difference. Parents play a key role in nurturing curiosity, confidence, and compassion. The most meaningful success comes from doing what you love and sharing it with others. About Benjamin Gardner: Benjamin Gardner is a 5th grader at Brookwood Elementary School. He prefers to go by Benjamin — though some people call him Ben — as he’s currently making the switch. He has three sisters and no brothers, and they’re all very nice to him. Benjamin participates in several activities, including choir, volleyball, and band. He’s also known for his strong tech skills — his classmates often call him “the techy dude,” a nickname he proudly embraces. He is the owner of a small business called Stinger Prints, inspired by the Kansas City Stingers, the National Pickleball League team of Kansas City. Benjamin’s dad plays on the team, which helped spark the connection. Through Stinger Prints, Benjamin 3D-prints pickleball-themed bag tags, such as miniature pickleballs or paddles personalized with names. He sells his creations at SW19 at the stadium during “Stinger Week” and is currently working on launching a website. Benjamin’s business also gives back — 10% of the proceeds made during Stinger Week are donated to the Kansas City Stingers Youth Foundation. In addition, he assists his dad with youth foundation clinics. Occasionally, his sisters help out at his stand when they’re looking for something to do. Stop Emotional Outsourcing: Beatriz Albina on Reclaiming Your Power

Stop Emotional Outsourcing: Beatriz Albina on Reclaiming Your Power
When you learn to anchor into your own worth, the world no longer gets to decide how you feel about yourself. Beatriz Victoria Albina brings powerful insight and clarity to the conversation on nervous system regulation, emotional outsourcing, and the lifelong practice of coming home to yourself. With equal parts warmth and wisdom, she shares how healing begins when we stop chasing external validation and start reconnecting to the safety, belonging, and worth that already live within us. This conversation is a gentle call to shift from survival mode to self-anchored living—where authenticity and inner peace can finally take root. Key Takeaways: Emotional outsourcing happens when you rely on others to define your safety, worth, or sense of belonging. Nervous system dysregulation can show up as anxiety, over-functioning, or emotional numbness—and it’s more common than you think. Healing doesn’t mean eliminating big emotions; it means learning how to feel them without abandoning yourself. Anchoring into your truth requires self-awareness, self-regulation, and a commitment to coming back to center—again and again. Regulation is a daily practice, not a quick fix—and community, nature, and breath are powerful allies in that process. About Beatriz Victoria Albina: Beatriz (Béa) Victoria Albina, NP, MPH, SEP (she/her) is a UCSF-trained Family Nurse Practitioner, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, Master Certified Somatic Life Coach, author of the forthcoming "End Emotional Outsourcing: a Guide to Overcoming Codependent, Perfectionist and People Pleasing Habits" (expected Sept 30, Hachette Balance) and Breathwork Meditation Guide with a passion for helping humans socialized as women to reconnect with their bodies, regulate their nervous systems and rewire their minds, so they can break free from codependency, perfectionism and people pleasing and reclaim their joy. She is the host of the Feminist Wellness Podcast, holds a Masters degree in Public Health from Boston University School of Public Health and a BA in Latin American Studies from Oberlin College. Born in Mar del Plata, Argentina, Béa grew up in the great state of Rhode Island. She has been working in health & wellness for over 20 years and lives with her wife, Billey Albina. Power of Small Steps: Brianna Wiest on Living a Life Aligned with Your Purpose
Change doesn’t always come with a breakthrough—it often begins with a single small step taken with intention. Brianna Wiest shares her wisdom on how micro shifts, emotional awareness, and self-compassion can transform not only your habits but your entire life. With clarity and heart, she explores the power of slowing down, embracing seasons of transition, and building emotional architecture that supports lasting growth. Her perspective reminds us that the life we’re waiting for is already unfolding—one small, consistent choice at a time. Key Takeaways: Small, intentional actions create momentum for long-term transformation without overwhelming your nervous system. Dr. Jill Jenkins on Tongue Ties, Pediatric Oral Health, and Whole-Child Wellness
07/20/2025
Dr. Jill Jenkins on Tongue Ties, Pediatric Oral Health, and Whole-Child Wellness
Healing often begins with the courage to ask questions—and the right guide to walk you through the answers. Dr. Jill Jenkins shares how pediatric oral health connects to far more than teeth, influencing everything from nursing success to sleep, speech, and even a child’s overall development. With warmth and wisdom, she explains how individualized care and a collaborative approach with other practitioners can empower parents to identify tongue ties and make confident decisions. Her passion is a reminder that small interventions early on can create ripple effects of wellness for a lifetime. Key Takeaways: Understanding tongue ties and their subtle symptoms can help parents advocate for their child’s health. A multidisciplinary approach—including dentists, lactation consultants, and bodywork—leads to better outcomes. Early, individualized care builds a foundation for proper oral function and overall well-being. Parents’ instincts are powerful; trusting your gut can lead to answers others might overlook. Restoring oral function can positively impact sleep, feeding, and emotional connection between parent and child. About Dr. Jill Jenkins: With almost 20 years of experience as a pediatric dentist, Dr Jill Jenkins felt like there wasn’t a child she couldn’t help through her pediatric dental practice, Jenkins Dentistry for Kids. That was until 2 of her long term employees had infants with tongue tie restrictions, requiring frenectomy procedures. Without the proper training and equipment, Dr Jenkins had to refer her patients to another practitioner at a vulnerable time for the families who had come to trust her. So, after extensive coursework and in-person observation with one of the most renowned tongue tie pediatric dentists in the field, Dr Richard Baxter, Dr Jenkins is thrilled to now be able to provide frenectomy services to patients through the establishment of Midwest Tongue Tie Professionals. By utilizing the state of the art Lightscalpel CO2 laser and working closely with functional providers, Dr Jenkins is confident that patients receive exceptional care before, during and post-procedure to ensure not only a precise tongue tie release, but also the movement and functionality the release is designed to achieve. Dr Jill Jenkins attended dental school and her pediatric residency at the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Dentistry and Children’s Mercy Hospital. After 15 years in her original partnership, Dr Jenkins pivoted to develop a practice based on her own patient and team centered philosophy to open Jenkins Dentistry for Kids with locations in Lenexa and Shawnee. She is also the owner and founder of Midwest Tongue Tie Professionals. Dr Jenkins has served organized dentistry in many volunteer roles throughout her career, most notably as President of the Fifth District Dental Society of Kansas, President of the State of Kansas Dental Association and currently as Chair of the KDA Membership committee, member of the ADA Council on Membership, and as a Delegate for the State of Kansas to the ADA. Dr Jenkins is a board certified pediatric dentist, and is involved with many professional organizations where she is a diplomate for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy, fellow of the American College of Dentists and fellow of the International College of Dentists. She also received the Women Who Mean Business Award from the Kansas City Business Journal in 2017, where she continues to stay active. She has also been awarded Dentist of the Year both locally and at the state level. Dr Jenkins has been married for over 25 years and is fortunate to have 3 amazing children. The Power of Trusting Your Inner Voice with Dr. Carol Phillips
Healing often begins with listening—not just to your body, but to the quiet guidance within. Dr. Carol Phillips shares a life shaped by intuition, faith, and a deep calling to help others heal. From working with newborns to supporting adults in releasing stored trauma, her journey blends science and spirituality into a practice that empowers others to trust their own inner wisdom. Her stories remind us that when we surrender control and allow space for energy, connection, and faith, profound transformation can unfold in ways we never imagined. Key Takeaways: Trusting your intuition creates space for deeper healing and alignment in your life. The body holds memories of physical and emotional trauma, and releasing them can restore balance. Healing happens most powerfully when practitioners act as guides, not controllers. Even newborns benefit from gentle, energy-based care to support healthy development. Surrendering to your own healing journey allows unexpected wisdom and guidance to surface. About Dr. Carol Phillips: Through the art of storytelling, in Pursuit of Destiny, Dr. Carol Phillips shares many miraculous events that she witnessed throughout her career. Introducing readers to the incredible world of chiropractic care and craniosacral therapy, she also explores the mysterious aspects of entering the world of spirit, which may happen when a provider becomes a clear and open conduit allowing a person's higher power to communicate. Born vaginally as a footling breech baby, Dr. Carol suffered from chronic migraines, complicated pregnancies, and chronic back pain that resulted in a full hysterectomy in her late twenties. Carol was introduced to chiropractic care after her first daughter endured a supposedly incurable condition for the first six years of her life. After watching her daughter's miraculous recovery, Carol began her own journey to find relief for her chronic health issues. After receiving an Associate of Applied Science degree, Bachelor of Art degree, and Doctor of Chiropractic degree, she went on to become a specialist in pediatric and maternal chiropractic and craniosacral therapy. Dr. Carol has shared her accumulated knowledge with thousands of people around the world for more than three decades. The Shift After Impact: Dr. Michelle Robin’s Healing Journey Begins Part 2
Your story has power—but only if you take the time to own it. Dr. Michelle Robin reflects on the decade since her life-altering bike accident, sharing how the real healing happened not just in her body, but in her mindset, her purpose, and her ability to receive. This part of the journey is about slowing down, listening deeper, and choosing to see the experience as something that happened for her, not to her. With honesty and heart, she invites us to ask better questions, embrace our own medicine, and build rhythms of well-being that support us when life shifts unexpectedly. Key Takeaways: Writing your wellness story can reveal patterns, healing gaps, and insights that support future growth. Empathy deepens when you've personally experienced pain, and that shift can transform how you show up for others. Learning to receive—help, support, love—is a skill that strengthens your ability to heal. Comparing your gifts to others only dims your light; your unique “medicine” is exactly what the world needs. Hope is the missing ingredient in many wellness journeys—find it, cultivate it, and protect it. Connect with Dr. Michelle and Bayleigh at: Thanks for listening! The Shift After Impact: Dr. Michelle Robin’s Healing Journey Begins Part 1
Sometimes your greatest shift starts with a moment you never saw coming. Ten years after her bike accident, Dr. Michelle Robin reflects on how that day cracked her wide open—not just physically, but spiritually, emotionally, and professionally. With honesty and grace, she shares how building a foundation of wellness long before the accident became the anchor that supported her healing. This isn’t just a story about recovery—it’s a powerful reminder to know who you are outside your role, to listen when your body speaks, and to surround yourself with a community that lifts you when you can’t stand on your own. Key Takeaways: Consistent wellness habits before a crisis can dramatically influence your ability to heal and recover. Building your support system before you need it makes all the difference in times of uncertainty. Your identity must extend beyond your profession—especially when life forces you to pause. Raising Resilient Kids with Dr. Marion Pierson’s Foundational Wellness Tips
Whole-person health starts with whole-family care—and that begins with a provider who sees you, hears you, and truly walks beside you. Dr. Marion Pierson brings decades of heart-led pediatric experience to the conversation, showing how health is more than check-ups and prescriptions—it’s about relationships, rest, and raising kids in rhythm with both structure and freedom. Her passion for serving her Kansas City community is palpable, and her insight into direct primary care reminds us that when families are empowered with knowledge, time, and trust, they don’t just survive—they thrive. Key Takeaways: Community-based care thrives when families feel seen, supported, and invited into the healthcare process. Simple habits like sleep, hydration, and nutrition can dramatically shift a child’s mood, focus, and overall well-being. Transitions, like summer break, can be both freeing and disruptive—maintaining flexible routines helps children stay grounded. Parents’ self-care directly impacts how children experience structure, safety, and emotional regulation. The right healthcare fit is like a good relationship—it’s built on trust, time, and open communication. Healing Through Honesty: Frank Ferrante’s Journey from Addiction to Authenticity

Healing Through Honesty: Frank Ferrante’s Journey from Addiction to Authenticity
Transformation doesn’t begin in a wellness plan—it starts with one honest moment of saying, “I want more for myself.” Frank Ferrante’s raw and remarkable story is a powerful reminder that healing is rarely linear and never perfect. Through addiction, regret, radical self-awareness, and rediscovery, Frank reveals that the heart of wellness is not about fixing what’s broken—it’s about reconnecting to love, service, and soul-level authenticity. His journey invites us to slow down, stop chasing illusions, and start showing up for ourselves and others with compassion, courage, and a deep sense of gratitude. Key Takeaways: Healing is an emotional and spiritual process that requires honesty, not perfection. Connection—with yourself and with others—is the antidote to addiction, loneliness, and despair. Regret doesn’t have to define you; it can become a teacher when met with grace and accountability. True wellness is simple: kindness, presence, and treating everyone (including yourself) like they matter. Gratitude grounds you in the present and softens even the hardest parts of the past. About Frank Ferrante: At 54 years old, Ferrante was the least likely candidate for a major personal transformation. He weighed close to 300 pounds and suffered from a slew of issues that were his unhappy legacy as an ex-junkie and ex-alcoholic: hepatitis C, chronic fatigue, joint pain, respiratory issues, depression, suicidal thoughts, and a libido that had gone into early retirement. He thought that "vegan" was a planet, "wellness" was not in his vocabulary, and he couldn't be bothered with self-help. He was for those very reasons the best candidate for a major personal transformation. One day, he stumbled into Café Gratitude—a vegan raw food restaurant run by three 20-something hipsters. Unbeknownst to him, they'd been thinking about finding someone to put on a raw food diet and making a documentary that would be the polar opposite of Super Size Me. Ferrante was looking for something, anything, to create a shift in his life. As he says, "Like zillions of people, I was hungry not so much for food, but for love." Never mind that he was old enough to be the boys' father or that he'd ridiculed the New Age herd for years—he accepted them pretty much on the spot as his new "transformational cheerleaders." With the young men's unexpected support and guidance, Ferrante began a redemptive odyssey that included a plant-based diet, yoga, and daily affirmations—but then faced a battle for his life when his underlying addictions rose up to claim him. May I Be Frank chronicles Ferrante’s experience of being the subject of a physical, mental, and spiritual makeover and also describes what happened next, post-transformation: he learned to love again. Breaking Generational Cycles with Love and Language: Vladimir Sainte’s Mission
Healing starts when we give kids the words to express what’s in their hearts. Vladimir Sainte’s journey—from a childhood where emotions were silenced to becoming a powerful voice for emotional literacy—is a testament to the impact of breaking generational cycles with compassion and intention. Through his work as a therapist and children’s book author, he’s helping families create space for real conversations, teaching young minds that their feelings are valid and their voices matter. His story is a moving reminder that when we lead with connection, community, and care, we not only raise resilient kids—we change the future. Key Takeaways: Emotional literacy begins at home—using simple check-ins and daily conversations builds trust and awareness. Storytelling is a powerful tool for helping kids feel seen, heard, and understood, especially during difficult times. Parents and caregivers can shift behavior patterns by choosing connection before correction. Busy doesn’t always mean better—intentional time and boundaries support healthier, happier families. Supporting children’s mental health starts with adults doing their own healing and showing up with grace. About Vladimir Sainte: Vladimir Sainte was born and raised in Queens, New York, to Haitian immigrant parents. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over a decade of experience and has significantly contributed to the Kansas City community as a child therapist and children's book author. In 2022, Mr. Sainte won Best Local Author from The Pitch magazine for his efforts to promote emotional literacy among young children. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Master of Social Work from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Drawing on his experience, he now writes and illustrates children's books that convey messages of resilience and hope. His first book, “Just Like a Hero,” was featured in a video by KCPT – Kansas City PBS, and he has conducted numerous author visits at schools throughout the area. He hopes to share his stories with children nationwide. Connect with Dr. Michelle and Bayleigh at: Thanks for listening! Thanks so much for listening to our podcast! Andrea Nakayama on Why One-Size-Fits-All Health Solutions Don’t Work
The path to healing doesn’t begin with a protocol—it begins with a story. Andrea Nakayama’s powerful journey from caregiver to trailblazing functional nutritionist is a reminder that true wellness is personal, rooted, and deeply interconnected. Through loss, love, and resilience, she discovered that lasting health requires more than symptom management—it calls for curiosity, compassion, and the courage to slow down and truly listen to your body. Her message invites us to stop chasing quick fixes and instead embrace the transformational power of understanding our own biology, one small shift at a time. Key Takeaways: Slowing down your healing process helps you learn what truly works for your unique body. Mental and physical health are inseparable—connection, belonging, and digestion all influence the mind. Food is personal; learning how it interacts with your physiology empowers you to nourish rather than restrict. Chronic conditions aren't your identity—they're signals, and real healing starts at the root. Simple practices like balancing meals with fat, fiber, and protein or tuning into how food makes you feel can create major health breakthroughs. About Andrea Nakayama: Andrea is a Functional Medicine Nutritionist and educator, who has led thousands of clients, and now teaches even more coaches and clinicians around the world in a revolution reclaiming ownership of both their own and their clients’ health. As the host of the 15-Minute Matrix Podcast and the founder and former CEO of Functional Nutrition Alliance, Andrea draws on systems biology, mental models, root cause methodology and the therapeutic partnership to offer long-awaited solutions for the rapidly growing chronic illness epidemic. After losing her young husband to a brain tumor in 2002, she discovered a passion for using food as personalized medicine and is now regularly consulted as the nutrition expert for the toughest clinical cases in the practices of many world-renowned doctors. She trains nearly four thousand practitioners each year in her methodologies so that they too can become the last stop for their clients and patients as well as a trusted referral partner for doctors in their area. Staying Grounded in Chaos: Tools for Mental and Emotional Wellness
Sometimes the most powerful shift you can make is simply choosing to show up—messy, overwhelmed, uncertain—and still commit to your own growth. As Dr. Michelle and Bayleigh navigate their own life transitions, they open up with honesty, humor, and heart about what it really takes to maintain mental and emotional wellness during chaotic seasons. Through reflection, grace, and intentionality, they remind us that well-being isn't about perfection—it's about alignment, commitment, and learning to nourish yourself from the inside out, one small change at a time. Key Takeaways: True mental wellness begins with self-awareness and the courage to meet yourself exactly where you are.
