Pain Sucks Episode 029 – Ice or Heat? Or Both?
Age old question when it comes to pain. Dr. Justin and I break it down to the most simplistic form for you to know which and when. Ice better on acute (just happened) injuries and best for joints Heat better on muscles (moist heat is better so add a moist towel if you have a dry heating pad) Heat before activity and ice after. Sometimes going back and forth is the answer. And sometimes nothing is best But it’s not one size fits all and everyone is different However, the answers are in this episode. Pain Sucks Episode 024 - 1 Tablespoon of SCT Oil is my secret to handling inflammation from a herniated disc
Oh my goodness This is a lifesaver for inflammation and disc herniation pain and other pains. You have been asking me for some super simple practical things to do. Here is one of my favorites Inflammation is the enemy. Not the disc. I’ll keep preaching that over and over until you get that. Lol Handling inflammation can happen in a variety of ways. One of the ways is getting your body to use fat for energy. Known as ketosis (a video on another day) the body is in a place to make massive amounts of energy by using the fat molecules of food and creating ketones that help heal inflammation. It’s really that cool and simple but it requires healthy fats. And it requires lots of them. Which is hard for people to do. In reality most don’t actually do ketosis diets but are in fact calorie restricting (another video) However, SCT Oil which stands for short chain triglycerides is an amazing technology and with just a small amount can force the body to create and use the ketones and battle inflammation Watch and learn more. If you want to be healthier and handle inflammation click on the website and get yourself some and try it out. Not only is it amazing but it tastes amazing and can take the place of butter and coconut oil and really any oil you would use. Dr Jessy gives a few examples in the video. Here is the website to order. And for the holidays you can get 10% off using the code HOLIDAY10 And thanks for being a loyal watcher.

Pain Sucks Episode 023 – Herniated Disc Pain Gets Crushed in Infrared Sauna
Infrared Sauna uses light frequency to heat up the insides of the body initiating an immune response that triggers killer immune cells to scavenge and get rid of dead and dying and diseased cells like cells of pain and cells of inflammation Unlike regulate heat or saunas infrared saunas can penetrate several inches into the body using special heaters in the walls and floors This is great for chronic pain and back and neck pain. Be prepared to sweat although the first several times people may not sweat the way they think they should. Infrared saunas are also great for liver detox, metabolism, weight loss, pain in general, heart issues, and much much more. My only caution is you choose a sauna and company that can prove to you that their sauna emits the frequency the right way penetrating the body to the right depth and can sustain that through the 40 minute treatment. I use Sunlighten. You can learn more about them in the link below Remember to mention Dr Matt Milonas or even better message me and I’ll set you up with my salesperson. Pain Sucks Episode 022 - Herniated disc people love acupressure mats for pain relief
Acupressure mats are an amazing pain control tool for your toolbox Inflammation and back pain and neck pain from disc herniations can be hard to handle. Acupressure mats help handle that pain in several ways The stimulation for the thousands of points distract the brain from the pain it’s currently processing. So, it acts as a distraction to the pain The points increase blood flow through the entire body and that brings healing and pain relief The points stimulate thousands of meridian points where body energies flow. These can get blocked like an artery and a nerve. This mat stimulated energy flow and can increase healing dramatically These are just 3 of the benefits. You can buy one relatively cheap on amazon. Just remember though Start with clothing or a barrier between the points and your skin and work up to being directly on your skin Start with just a minute or so and then work your way up. This really does work and I use it and recommend it to others. Remember to subscribe and like our channel and share. No one and I mean no one gets to tell you that you can’t heal.

Pain Sucks Episode 020 – The 3 Foundational Pillars of Healing from a Herniated Disc
Most people focus on getting rid of their pain as fast as they can in whatever way they can. Most of those ways don’t fix the cause or the foundation. And then these poor folks are usually left to suffer again in the future. The human body is amazing, and it has the ability to heal. But healing also comes with a price. Pain. Have you ever watched a football game or sporting event where an athlete’s lower leg snaps? You don’t even want to watch the replay because it makes your stomach churn. That type of injury to the athlete is the same as what is happening with your disc. Only it’s in your spine and likely means nerves are involved also. So, the way you heal is not going to be the same as an ankle sprain except that is typically how the medical community handles it. The reason my patients and I have success at the highest levels and for a lifetime is we pay attention to the three foundational pillars. Micro motion Handle Inflammation Be Patient. In this episode I handle Q and A about these 3 pillars. And don’t forget to download my ebook with strategies and techniques to allow you to heal asap. Here is the link. Pain Sucks Episode 019 – Why Focusing on Fixing Your Herniated Disc Is the Wrong Move
Most people who have a bulge or herniation in their intervertebral discs are told and therefore believe that the disc is the problem. Their doctor or therapist or friends even tell them that the piece of disc tissue is the issue, and they should therefore have it removed or do whatever it takes to fix it. I say that’s not true and not only is it not true it is preventing massive of amounts of people from healing and getting out of pain. How do I know? Simple. Dr. John Sarno MD in his book Healing Back Pain talks about how in his years in practice he would see people with the smallest bulge whose lives were turned upside down in pain. He would also see people who had some of the worst herniations he had ever seen, and they had no pain at all. Why? Because the disc isn’t THE PROBLEM. It’s A problem but not THE PROBLEM. In this episode we will explore this phenomenon and set your mind free so you can truly heal! And don’t forget that more strategies and amazing techniques can be found in my e book. Pain Sucks Episode 018 – The role of Toxins in Chronic Pain with Dr. Scott Richmond

Pain Sucks Episode 018 – The role of Toxins in Chronic Pain with Dr. Scott Richmond
Dr. Scott was a lifelong athlete who battled lots of illness and pain. These experiences led him to Athletic Training and eventually on to become a Doctor of Chiropractic. After battling multiple health issues including Mold poisoning and Lyme Disease and healing himself of these naturally Dr. Scott now exclusively works with those whose lives have been affected by Toxins and Toxicity. He addresses many things in his practice but understands and incorporates principles stating that all areas of life must be evaluated for someone to heal. The human body is energy and chemicals! Nowadays Detox is more important that nutrition! Based off studies in 2015 concerning placental blood in the cord the likeliness of every human being toxic is 100% simply from heavy metals from mom and pesticides etc. These toxins can wreak health havoc from birth and show up later in life in the form of symptoms. Toxins especially love fat and nerves, so they bury themselves in the brain and fatty areas of the cells. One growing area is glyphosate or Round Up being found in soft tissue injuries. Pesticides destroying our bodies. Role of Cellular Healing Each cell has an outer membrane made up of 2 layers of fat Toxins bind to the receptors meant for healthy chemicals and cause congestion and cellular inflammation. Inside each cell has organs which also have layers of fat making up their membranes One specific organ is the mitochondria or energy center and needs to be addressed when handling toxin removal. The process of toxin removal is not one size fits all but in general the order is necessary. Remove Toxins Must heal outer cell membranes by eating lots of healthy fats (grass-fed butter, olive oil, coconut oil, avocado oil, www.SCTOIL.com) which will open channels to the inside of the cell Raise Cellular Energy Inside will also benefit from healthy fats but now also adding Selenium, Iodine, Minerals, and Oxygen will help the cells begin to dump toxins out of the cell into the organs of Excretion like the Liver and Gall Bladder and Kidneys and Skin. Get the Toxins out (super important and often left out as toxins will rebind) Coffee enemas and palmitic acid in the coffee force the liver and gall bladder to cleanse and dump so it can bind the toxins in the bile duct and get it in the toilet before they reabsorb into the body. Hydration is a must so the kidneys can process and get rid of toxins. Castor Oil packs are amazing ways of assisting the organs Movement to stimulate Lymphatic System. Rebounding, walking, stretching all get the lymphs to move and help drain. Great nutrition helps the gut health for this process. A typical cleanse is not a detoxification as it likely will only clean outside the cell and not the inside and may likely increase reactions and cause more long-term illness. Again, the order is very important, and each stage is managed and has its own protocols. Dr. Scott 5 recommendations for those in Chronic Pain Bedtime Routine is a must including stretching before bed Lemon Water assists the Kidneys in filtration and binding of toxins Tablespoon or more of Himalayan Sea Salt daily to stimulate the sodium/potassium pump. Sleep Coffee Enemas to get the cleaning going. Pain Sucks Episode 017 – Please stop doing this to people in pain
We have all either been in pain or know someone close to us in intense pain. We want to help but we make the horrible mistake of telling them “it’s going to be ok”. Intense pain actually activates a part of the brain that gets that person in an intense amount of focus to the present. Almost to the point where they can’t see beyond the moment. While we are trying to be supportive, we are actually hurting their healing. It’s better to say something like “it’s ok that you are in pain now”. “It’s ok to feel that pain”. “Sometime in the future it will be ok but for now it’s ok to feel the pain”. We forget that pain is a process of healing. We want them out of it and through it now, but the body has a plan. It can’t be ignored. It can’t be cheated. Now that’s not an excuse to not do the work necessary to healing but a mindset to honor what is happening in the moment. Let’s stop blowing smoke up their butts and trying to make them feel something they can’t and help the healing process in the moment.

Pain Sucks Episode 015 – Have to do the work in the correct order to heal
One of the mistakes I see people make is that they want so desperately to feel better they do the work in the wrong order or they skip steps. When the spine is injured you have to understand it’s a serious trauma and needs to be addressed accordingly and done in the right order. Example: If the spine is stuck you can’t do Physical Therapy and win long term. Not as the first step. Learn about micromotion first. Then handling inflammation. And on and on. A to Z has to be done in the right order!

Pain Sucks Podcast Episode 013 – Coronavirus and My Back Pain
I’ve been dealing with a massive amount of stress just like everyone else has. I’m also freaked out by the new “unnormal” out there and trying to figure out how to make sense of it all as well as my own life, health, and business. And within all of it I’m scared. I’m not going to lie to you. It’s scary from many angles. And that added stress has added massive amounts of stress hormones to my system which has cause inflammation and has now made my back flare up and pissed off my disc and my leg etc.. What I’ve been learning is that our pain is mostly our emotional stress and our emotional state. Dr. Sullivan in an earlier episode told us that after a few days our pain centers in our brain change from the place associated with the area of our body that hurts to the emotional center called the amygdala. Now imagine this area storing all your stress memories and being bombarded now all day by the news and the other things you are dealing with now. Welcome to the flare up as the stress is too much. That’s what I’ve been dealing with. So, here are a few things I’m doing to help myself right now. Gratitude journal Journaling my emotions Reading my Bible Prayer And something I had forgotten to do for a while is EFT (emotional freedom technique) in the form of something called Tapping. Instead of telling you how here a link is to learn how. I promise it will help you dramatically. Enjoy healing and God Bless you all

Pain Sucks Podcast Episode 012 – Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as a Necessity for Pain and Healing with Dr. Lou Hilliard
11/08/2019
Pain Sucks Podcast Episode 012 – Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as a Necessity for Pain and Healing with Dr. Lou Hilliard
Dr. Lou started his career as a chiropractor and was very successful at it. It was on a trip to a seminar in Colorado that he realized that after a strenuous exercise workout he was really struggling for oxygen. It was in this moment he realized that there had to be something that increased the amount of oxygen his body could take in and utilize. This led him to discover a newly emerging technology called Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. And now he runs one of the larges Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy clinics in the nation in Atlanta, Georgia. So, in his clinic he focuses on the following: Nerve Supply (handled through proper chiropractic) Oxygen (Hyperbaric Therapy) Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy works because of two laws of nature Boyle’s Law Henry’s Law Both essentially say that gas (oxygen in this case) under pressure has to dissolve into a fluid The human body being 70% fluid then can under pressure absorb massive amounts of oxygen. Oxygen kills inflammation on contact as well as increases healing of damaged tissues and cells. Oxygen promotes apoptosis (a programmed death of a cell) Under pressure the Oxygen gets pushed into all fluids of the body not just through the lungs Normal respiration the body takes in about 7% oxygen because a normal breath has about 21% oxygen and the rest mostly nitrogen. Hyperbaric can actually take the 7% to 96% Dr. Lou reminded us that the science is new so there are no real “treatment plans” however the body needs time to learn to handle the new levels of oxygen so multiple times per week for a few weeks is a great starting point. Also, treatments can last from 1 hour to several hours. Multiple chambers exist. 1.3ATA is referred to as Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen. Where 1.5 and above is called Hyperbaric and these chambers are found mostly in hospital setting for drastic and serious conditions. As of today, the FDA has only approved about 13 conditions for Hyperbaric Therapy and for Mild Hyperbaric Therapy only acute hypoxia or “altitude sickness”. However, people from all walks of life and backgrounds have found massive healing using Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy so it’s worth a try! Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy actually has its roots back in the 1820’s with mountain climbers learning they could train their body’s under pressure to hold more oxygen as they ascended the mountains. This technology is so amazing that it is now being studied for autism, brain damage and stroke, cancer, viral and bacterial diseases, auto-immune function, athletic performance etc.. For those with pain it works because most pain has inflammation as it’s driving force and the hyperbaric level of oxygen kills the inflammation. Dr. Lou has offered discounts on chambers to all listeners as well as $200 off all chambers for all doctors interested in putting the tech in their clinics. Patients do require a doctor prescription to buy a hyperbaric unit with an oxygen condenser. Talk to your doctor or chiropractor if you are interested. Dr. Lou also offers discounts to our vets and first responders! For local treatment in your area he recommends googleing “hyperbaric oxygen therapy near me” as there is not a database of providers yet. Dr. Lou can be found at Visit for more information

Pain Sucks Episode 011 – Understanding why we feel pain and how to overcome with Dr. Dan Sullivan

Pain Sucks Episode 011 – Understanding why we feel pain and how to overcome with Dr. Dan Sullivan
Dr. Dan had a personal road to chiropractic and then eventually into neurology and speaking. While a track athlete he hurt himself and found chiropractic despite coming from a family of Medical professionals. His amazing results led him on the journey to his future. So, what is pain? It’s a perception that involves and amazing communication between the brain and the body through the central nerve system. It’s not “in your head”. It’s REAL and it serves a purpose Imagine your child with a disease not able to feel pain. Would never know when something needed attention. Before understanding pain, we must understand that the Greatest Doctor in the World is Inside of You! It’s you!!! How does a cut heal? How does mother’s breast milk change based on babies needs figured out from the baby’s saliva? The body is the most amazing thing ever made. Science is now proving each day what we’ve known for 1000’s of years. The body has an intelligence designed to heal itself. 2013 research showed that those in pain had a 43% chance of surgery if seeing a doctor first but only a 1.7% chance if seeing a chiropractor first despite both groups healing! Within the firsts 90 days the brain centers for pain are directly linked to the physical tissue of the body that is injured. After 90 days the brain centers switched to the emotional centers. And once these brain centers changed our perception of pain becomes 500% more sensitive. More proof that we must understand how our emotions influence our healing and pain perception. Think about the Phantom Limb study where someone had their arm amputated yet still felt the pain as if the arm was still there. That’s an emotional area of the brain! Must be addressed along with the physical. So why does chiropractic and the adjustment process (applied correctly following true testing) have to be a part of the healing process? Chiropractic physically alters the structure of the spine and therefore the Central Nerve System The adjustment process instructs the body’s stress hormones to calm down The adjustment process provides nutrition to the discs and the tissues of healing Chiropractic lowers the body’s needs for pain medication Many more reasons Dr. Dan’s suggestions for influencing the brain and nerve system for healing Chiropractic Sleep in a room 66 degrees and blacked out (receptors all over the body will calm and the pain can decrease. Also take a bath with Epsom salt and lavender essential oil before bed for the energetic and neurological healing of the magnesium in the salt and the lavender. Eases the brain centers transmitting pain Do Expressive Writing. Take a piece of paper and write down all of the emotional issues you are dealing with from the most to the least. Then tear the paper apart. 6 to 10 minutes before bed. Rewires pain centers and puts focus back on healing Have an attitude of gratitude. Gratitude turns off those pain centers in the emotional areas of the brain. Simple but not easy to do this. Deep Breathing (episode we did with Dr. Jim Claussen really hit this) Techniques where exhaling is the focus Meditation (also see episode with Dr. Jim) What’s funny is that the people who heal the best from disc injury had spouses and partners who just didn’t ask how the person in pain was feeling. So interesting but asking triggers the pain center in the brain. Have that talk with your significant other or caregiver. 111,000,000 Americans in Chronic pain relying on a broken medical system of medications and surgery and not getting answers when the answers are already in them! Pain Sucks Episode 010 – Pain Management and Massage Therapy with Kate London
Kate London is the founder and owner of London Recover Institute in Geneva, IL. London Recovery is a multi-therapy clinic focused on getting to the root cause of pain. Unlike most Massage Therapy Kate believes that her role is to peel back the layers to get the systems of the body communicating again. Including the Gut, the Immune System, the Nervous System, and the Muscles and Joints Systems. She explained to us that the body is not making mistakes and because of that therapists have to be cautions and thorough in finding out what the true causes of pain are. Generally, she finds that the patterns and muscles that don’t have pain are actually the cause of the pain and need to be addressed. Anytime you do something to the body expect that something else is being undone. Always a push and pull effect so pay attention. She encouraged us to look carefully for a therapist interested in looking from head to toe and not quick to do the same “massage or treatment” on each person. Many times, clients and patients are not ready for treatment because they are too wired with anxiety or emotional imbalance and that needs to handled first. Healing discs that she recommends are adhesives that change the energetic output of the damaged tissues. In fact, they have the ability to lower the energy of the body’s inflammatory and communication systems so that the tissue can be at rest. Kinesiotaping is a big part of her practice and she recommended it to us for the following reasons Inflammatory help due to its pre stretched state that causes osmosis below the skin for healing fluids Slight stability properties Input to the brain from the skin receptors can lower the pain “sensation” YouTube has great videos on self-taping and tape can be bought at the local stores Kate encouraged those in pain to find therapists who also have kinesiology degrees or physical therapy backgrounds including applied kinesiology. Multiple tools also help including the discs and the taping. Call and ask about the therapist’s experience and styles before committing to care. Kate’s website is Her email is

Dr. Mick is in private practice in the Houston, TX area. While dealing with some major life struggles surrounding the health of his wife Tracy Dr. Mick realized that life was too much for him to handle. While adjusting a patient one day a wise man caught on to the fact that Dr. Mick was exhausted in every stage and made the statement that Sarcasm (which Dr. Mick held the gold medal) means to tear the flesh. This statement led him to a journey of understanding that his whole of life he was coming from (as most of us are) a place of “isn’t” defined by fear, anger, and PAIN. We know there are 3 traumas in life Physical Chemical Emotional, this is the one we need to understand as it sets a foundation for our life successes and is engrained and written into our DNA handed from generations previous. Conscious Mind is our Heart’s Desires, our highest choices, and our yes and no Our Unconscious Mind is a place where these emotional experiences written in our DNA play out in a place of co-dependence where our joy is entirely dependent on something outside of ourselves. Symptoms are really Body Signals! Our experience of pain is the sign that we are experiencing the last “emotional feeling” before enthusiasm. It’s the rock bottom of that experience! So, what we say matters. Upgrading our self-talk Trying to “get away” or “get something away” is an illusion These patterns of emotions we have are simply survival techniques we have reinforced over and over! How to Upgrade Faith of a mustard seed. Declare what will be as it has already happened Ask better questions about the experience happening to uncover the pattern Example: Why is this happening to me? Negative What does this pain turn in to for me? Positive Everything we say gets answered “this is typical of my life” will get answered “I’m fully God supported” will get answered too! Understanding how to forgive. All things are forgivable and so are all people Low Back Pain is always about dealing with other people in our lives, codependency of us looking outside of ourselves for ways to be happy. Right leg pain is dad Left leg is mom Dr. Mick does an exercise called Imagination Activation Understanding your miracle (healing in this case) is already done then what is in your life now? How do you feel now? What are people saying about you and what are you saying about yourself? Flare ups was what we were asked about Recognize what pattern came up Flip the pattern. Choose to love it! Pain turns to Ease when it is loved! It’s always an internal job, never external, and always ends with LOVE Email Dr. Mick at or text 281-813-2519 for a free 20-minute discovery call Check out his website www.myhighestchoice.com

Pain Sucks Episode 008 – Stem Cells and Exosomes for Pain and Inflammation with Dr. Derek Ferguson

Pain Sucks Episode 008 – Stem Cells and Exosomes for Pain and Inflammation with Dr. Derek Ferguson
Dr. Derek began working with Stem Cell Therapy in his clinic in 2010. He was very intrigued with this new technology of Genetic Healing for Pain and Healing. Stem Cells are simply young cells with no receptors on them. In particular mesenchymal stem cell. No receptors on them means they have not differentiated into a particular tissue of the body and therefore can become anything. We have stem cells from the day we are born. As children we have 1 stem cell for every 10,000 cells we have. As we age that changes. In our 20’s it is more like 1/100,000 and in our 60’s it’s 1/1,000,000. Meaning as we age, we deplete our stem cells. Harvesting stem cells Amniotic blood assures a very young stem cell From our own bone marrow or fat cells When we harvest our own stem cells, we create damage and inflammation in our body so naturally the stem cell is going to go there first for healing. That means there are less cells for the actual area we really want to heal. Stem cells will work best in a non-inflamed body. So, someone who is eating right and living a very non inflammatory lifestyle will benefit more. Delivery to the body Injected straight into the damaged tissue area Introduced through IV which means cells find their way through the whole body. Not as productive because stem cells will look for inflammation and damage through the whole body and not the intended area as much. Stem cells have a moderate success rate because of the age of the people using the therapy and the status of the person’s inflammation levels. New Technology called Exosomes Exosomes are also stem cells but are communication cells. No receptors as well. These stem cells are communication messengers located outside the cell. Science is finding that one of the primary way’s cells speak to each other is through extracellular messengers like exosomes. So unlike injecting stem cells into a damaged area, introducing exosomes allows them to talk to the cells that are damaged and activate the body’s own healing mechanisms. Unlike stem cells, exosomes provide an ongoing healing as these exosomes keep communicating to the healing tissues and asking them what they need. Then telling the body to provide it. Lifestyle is still very important. Dr. Derek’s own experience was that he was a 20/10 on the pain scale and was given exosomes via IV. Within 3O seconds he said, he could feel the body begin to talk. He said he was lethargic and down for the count for the following 2 days. The exosomes were so busy communicating and calling up healing his body literally was out of energy and he just rested. On day 3 he was pain free and felt like he could take on life normally. Exosomes had asked the cells that were damaged in his spine (and other areas from life) what they needed and called up the healing chemicals. Cartilage rebuilding Tissue rebuilding Inflammation was crushed. Every day is better as the exosomes can continue to work as they create massive reproduction. Lifestyle matters. He kept emphasizing that to us. Most physicians haven’t even heard of this technology so the challenge if finding a provider to offer it. If you live in the Northeast or are willing to travel you can reach out to his office for this treatment. The link to his office is below Spend some time learning about both these great technologies but really focus on exosomes which is the wave of the future.

Pain Sucks Episode 007 – The Power of Rewiring the Mind for Healing with Dr. Jim Claussen

Pain Sucks Episode 007 – The Power of Rewiring the Mind for Healing with Dr. Jim Claussen
Dr. Jim has been in private practice for over 25 years. He has spent decades of learning and understanding how the body gets programmed and how we can re-program our minds and nervous systems and thus our lives to move towards what we want. He has also dealt with 4 herniated discs in his neck along with some other diagnosis this last year but has created amazing healing! We are just energetic beings having a physical experience. The smallest parts of our cells are just energy that vibrate and have frequencies. Our thoughts cause vibrations and frequencies proven through science. Our thoughts can influence our body through vibration and frequency. These thoughts then program our subconscious mind. Science shows the programming of our mind started in the womb with our mothers’ choices. When we were born, we were already pre-programmed to respond to life. How do we get programmed? FEELINGS and EMOTIONS create beliefs. These beliefs then get hardwired. When we hardwire, the neural connections in the brain joining together. The brain is neuroplastic which means it adapts to feelings and emotions and creates pathways which then create physiology. Think of having a police car behind you turn on the lights. How do you feel? Even if it’s not you being pulled over you still create physiology based off beliefs which came from feelings and emotions about speeding and being pulled over. You were wired! All these wirings are like tapes or CD’s playing in the background. So, when you see a stimulus that activates the tape it creates physiology. Playing these tapes over and over strengthens the pathway thus the physiology. Any stimulus can trigger the tape because the body is now hardwired to see that stimulus and play the tape associated with the programming we’ve done in our lives. How do we re-wire this process for healing. Understand the here and now but see the future. That alone confuses the tape playing and can change physiology in the moment. Gratitude, Love, Joy are all emotions of seeing the future and the here and now that can help. The body is always healing. So then how do you create it? By knowing it’s already done even if it’s not present yet! A cut will heal on the hand. We know that. It just may not be done yet! New research shows it takes 80 days to rewire (not the 21 we originally were taught). Where do we start to get out of pain? Find one thing on your body you do like. Love that. Immediately that re directs attention. Understanding the body doesn’t understand or process negatives so to heal you must create a future of gain, not avoidance so you can make new tapes Don’t “lose” 20 pounds. Create a healthy 150 lbs. See the difference? What I’m gaining not losing. Must create many of these “affirmation goals” and make them inspired by repeating them. Remember “I am healing” means I’m not done and is negative. “I am healed” is how we re-program. Also, you may say it but not feel it. But “I am healed” in the little moments of wins creates momentum until it’s actually now in your life. Use a super high-quality frankincense essential oil (listen to podcast 003) while affirming goals. Frankincense is such high frequency energy it can raise your energy quickly. Place a few drops on the hand and cover the nose and mouth and inhale. Quality oils will stimulate the olfactory system and you can then recreate new tapes to play quickly because of the number of receptors in the olfactory system. Use a cross body movement technique after this or during the above. With left hand grab your right ear. Right arm under left arm and grab left ear with your right hand. Now holding this squat down however is best. Sit in a chair then stand if you have to. Even a couple inches are fine. Repeat that squat 10 or 15 times. Doing this ensures each nerve and cell is firing in your body while you are re-programming. This creates new neural pathways quickly. Dr. Jim recommends Transcendental Meditation as it has been proven to rewire quickly. Find a practitioner or training on their website. Belly Breathing With the chest completely still (cannot let chest move out or up) pull air in through the stomach and push out through the stomach. 5 seconds in, 5 seconds hold, 5 seconds out, 5 seconds hold As often as you want. Turns off fight or flight of pain and restarts healing. Find Dr. Jim on his website [email protected] . Put Pain Sucks in the Subject Line so he sees it. His book on Amazon is here for download! He reminded us to own the fact that you are where you are in the right place at the right time having the right experience for right now.

Pain Sucks Episode 006 – Understanding CBD and its application for Pain with Dr. Andrew Kidder

Pain Sucks Episode 006 – Understanding CBD and its application for Pain with Dr. Andrew Kidder
Dr. Andrew Kidder is an expert in the field of functional medicine as well as CBD and all things cannabinoids. We started the discussion with understanding the Hemp vs Marijuana comparison Hemp and Marijuana are both classified under the Cannabis umbrella Marijuana has CBD and THC Hemp is CBD and may or may not have some THC THC is the cannabinoid that effectively activates the “high” in the right amounts. However, research has indicated that a small amount of THC may actually yield a better medicinal affect with no high. Other distinguishing characteristics rise from how and where the plant is grown and harvested etc. There are 100 or so Cannabinoids with CBD and THC being the main 2 studied right now. CBD was discovered as scientists were learning about THC and its interaction in the human body for healing CBD is typically from the Cannabis Sativa plant Endocannabinoid System discovered in the human body in the 1990’s. -It regulates balance in most systems including hormones, pain, and the immune system and well as the gut and even the brain. -It has been shown to have the highest number of receptors in the human body -Which means the human body also produces its own endocannabinoids Anatomized which are neurotransmitters or brain chemical cannabinoids that are responsible for the feel-good happiness pathway. Some describe as the “runner’s high” 2AG which are the body endocannabinoids which are the highest amount in the body and help regulate pain and immune response. Also balances and manages the immune system as well as organs of digestion including appetite and weight loss So, when CBD (an external cannabinoid) is taken in it activates CB1 and CB2 receptors CB1 is brain and spinal cord CB2 is all other tissues So together maintaining the endo (inside occurring) and then taking an external one like CBD we can really balance the body and help with pain. Harvesting is done by CO2 extraction then refining So much happens before it hits the market it’s important to know the manufacturer, the farm, the harvesting machines, the level of quality etc… 3 types of CBD on the market Isolate – everything is removed including all other cannabinoids and the terpenes (smell and taste) chemicals. Typically, people will smoke or vape this. This is the type Big Pharma has latched on to. Full Spectrum – CBD as well as the other cannabinoids and terpenes and may actually contain up to 0.3% of the THC Broad Spectrum – CBD and other cannabinoids and terpenes but no THC Dr. Kidder encouraged us to read the labels for the following Broad or Full or Isolate Amount of CBD (5mg per dropper or 25mg or whatever) He encouraged us to check with the company for data on what their product contains in each dropper. Specifically, for pain he encouraged that we take a quality full spectrum liquid or tincture or gummy or gel cap in the amount of no less than 25mg. So good quality CBD might have all 25mg in the dropper. However, he said that won’t be enough and we should also be taking CBD in through a topical rub or balm applied over the area of injury and inflammation. He explained how the CB1 receptors cannot be activated in pain relief enough with just one way. Look for a bottle with 750mg or so He told us all to email him directly with questions or for a great source for us to use. His email is [email protected]

Pain Sucks Episode 005 – Handling pain mentally and emotionally with Mandy Leonards, MSW
Mandy runs a private psychotherapy clinic in the Indianapolis, In area. She is an age group athlete in running and triathlons so a high level but unpaid athlete In May of 2019 she suffered a ruptured 10mm herniated disc at L5-S1 and it set her up for a journey that she is just now coming out of. We talked about pain causing FEAR, UNCERTAINTY, AND BEING SCARED OF THE FUTURE and how it’s ok to feel all those emotions. She taught us to VALIDATE THOSE FEELINGS but don’t get stuck there as the longer you stay there the harder it is to get out. Knowing that pain is going to be a journey of months to years sometimes allows you to reset and recalibrate to win. One of her tricks she used in her own journey and with her clients is to take inventory of all that is good and be grateful through the pain (not for the pain). The mind body connection is huge, and we talked about several resources documenting emotional states and its link to cortisol leading to more inflammation and thus more pain. “The Body Keeps A Score” and “Healing Back Pain” are two books outlining emotional states and the response the physical body makes and how we can reverse the process and engineer healing. When we feel pain, we need to ground ourselves. She recommends 5-second-deep breaths and just focus on the here and now. Sounds, smells, our own breathing etc. Not to diminish the pain or fix it but to be present to rewire the body. 3 things Mandy recommends Deep breathing and acknowledging the present. Allow yourself to be vulnerable with yourself and honest about how the pain makes you feel. Then ground yourself. Utilize resources. Lean on those who love you and even have connections to practitioners and resources for healing. Don’t do it alone ever. Focus on what you can do right now and JUST DO IT. Get up. Go to a ballgame your kid is playing. Have dinner with the family. Go for a walk. Watch a movie. Understand completely you have to DO THE WORK. Healing wont’ happen with passivity. You must take action. She can be reached at www.mandyleonards.com Her blog site is where you can learn about her journey and work on your own. Some Final thoughts Mandy left us with: Trauma makes your brain go into fight or flight mode. This can me emotional trauma OR physical trauma OR BOTH. You can either be okay in everyday life, or freeze where the past repeats over and over. Make room for BOTH. When people are stuck, two aspects of them are trying to get through a single door. Make a double door and give permission. Remember, anything that will reduce stress is going to be helpful in terms of reducing inflammation.

Pain Sucks Episode 004 – Healing from a Herniated Disc with Dr. Nathan Thompson
Dr. Nate, founder of Dr. Nathan Thompson and Exemplify Health, and author of the book T28 and I sit down and discuss my journey with my herniated disc in January of 2015. We also dive into why movement of the affected area is so vital to the beginning of the process of healing. Micromotion or the smallest motions of the spine are what we lost to begin with in our spine at a young age. So, regaining it is an absolute must. We talked about chiropractic adjustments with the arthrostim, wobble discs, as well as various stretches we both do on our patients to begin the healing process. Understanding the nature of the spine is of utmost importance to those with herniations anywhere in the spine. We then spoke about inflammation and handling it from the 3 angles of physical, chemical, and emotional inflammation control. Dr. Nathan is an expert at testing for inflammation through various blood and other tests and therefore through the healing process it is so important to know how the tissues of the body are responding to healing. Finally, we talked about the future for those who have suffered disc herniations and the importance of retraining the neurological firing patterns. We both agree heavily that retraining movements such as the deadlift and the back squat are vital to prolonged healing and feeling good. We both participate in CrossFit with excellent coaching and instruction and are the most fit we’ve been in our entire lives. Follow him at Order his amazing book about getting into the best shape of your life, T28 as well.

Pain Sucks Episode 002 – My Story
I sequestered L5-S1 18mm on January 10, 2015 I also had L4-L5 Herniation and L3-L4 Bulge All of this was confirmed on MRI on January 27, 2015 I literally hated my life because of the pain. My pain prevented sleep, prevented work, prevented me from being a father and a husband. I did everything I could and over 4 months learned to handle the pain. In April of 2015 Dr. Kris a neurosurgeon my friends got me an appointment with told me no surgery. He said a couple more months and I would be fine. His words were “suck it up buttercup” This gave me hope. The last bit I needed to have victory I’ve now rebuilt my life and health and teach others to do the same.
