info_outlineIn this episode of the Homeopathy 247 podcast, host Mary Greensmith welcomes Dr. Devang Shah, a homeopath based in Mumbai, India. Dr. Shah shares his insights into homeopathy training in India, his approach to musculoskeletal conditions, and how homeopathy works holistically to support healing.
Homeopathy Education in India
Dr. Shah explains that homeopaths in India undergo 4.5 years of formal medical study, followed by a one-year internship—similar to mainstream medical doctors. The main difference is that instead of pharmacology, homeopaths study materia medica, which covers homeopathic remedies.
Public Awareness of Homeopathy
Homeopathy is well-known in many parts of India, particularly in cities like Calcutta where people often use remedies like Arnica and Belladonna at home. In more rural areas, awareness is growing. The more skilled homeopaths graduate, the more homeopathy spreads.
Treating Musculoskeletal Conditions
Dr. Shah began treating chronic pain conditions after being invited to consult at a friend’s orthopedic hospital. There, he treated conditions like osteoarthritis and back pain—especially where conventional medicine offered little relief.
The Link Between Stress and Pain
Stress often worsens back pain, whether emotional (grief, anxiety) or physical. Dr. Shah explains that homeopathy addresses both physical and emotional causes of pain, offering more complete and lasting relief than simply masking symptoms with painkillers.
Understanding the Vital Force
In homeopathy, the “vital force” is the body’s innate healing power. When this force is weakened, symptoms appear. Remedies stimulate the vital force to restore balance and activate healing from within.
How Remedies Are Selected
Homeopaths follow the “law of similars”—choosing remedies that produce symptoms similar to the patient’s condition. For example, Apis (made from the honeybee) is used for conditions that mimic a bee sting: swelling, redness, and burning pain relieved by cold.
Proving Remedies and Materia Medica
Homeopathic remedies are “proved” on healthy individuals who record physical, emotional, and mental changes. This data forms the basis of materia medica—the homeopath’s guide to choosing remedies. These records have been collected for over 200 years.
Avoiding Remedy Overuse
Unlike conventional medicine, homeopathic remedies are not meant to be taken continuously. Once symptoms improve, the remedy should be paused. Overuse may lead to “proving” symptoms—new symptoms created by the remedy itself. Proper timing and follow-up are key.
Chronic Illness and Long-Term Benefits
Even long-standing conditions like rheumatoid arthritis can improve significantly. Dr. Shah shares a case where a patient avoided costly injections and painkillers thanks to homeopathy. While early treatment brings the best outcomes, even later stages can benefit.
Homeopathy and Conventional Medicine
Homeopathy can be safely used alongside conventional treatments. Dr. Shah notes that patients on medications like thyroid pills often reduce or even stop them under supervision as homeopathy restores balance and health.
This episode offers a deep and clear explanation of how homeopathy works—especially in treating musculoskeletal issues. Dr. Devang Shah highlights the importance of holistic understanding, symptom matching, and the body’s own ability to heal.
