info_outlineIn this episode of the Homeopathy 247 podcast, host Mary Greensmith welcomes back homeopath Elisa Joulfaian for an in-depth look at the powerful remedy Lycopodium. Though not always the first remedy that comes to mind for first aid, Lycopodium is surprisingly useful in both acute and chronic situations—especially when digestive issues and anxiety are involved.
Lycopodium and the Digestive System
Elisa begins by highlighting Lycopodium’s strong connection to digestion. It’s her go-to remedy for bloating, gas, and digestive upset—especially when the pain or discomfort is focused on the right side of the body. It’s also helpful when symptoms worsen between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m., a key characteristic of the remedy.
Lycopodium is particularly useful after heavy meals or when someone feels uncomfortably full but still wants to eat more. This paradoxical combination—a big appetite with digestive distress—is typical in Lycopodium cases. It’s even suitable for colicky babies or children with gas.
Confidence, Anxiety, and the Lycopodium Personality
One of Lycopodium’s defining emotional traits is the contrast between outward confidence and inner anxiety. Elisa describes this as someone who may appear bold or controlling but is secretly afraid of failure or rejection. This shows up frequently in children who act bossy or demanding but then hide behind their parent’s leg when confronted.
Adults with a Lycopodium picture may seem confident in public, but suffer from self-doubt internally. This remedy is especially helpful before public speaking or high-pressure situations where nerves take over. It’s also commonly associated with reading difficulties or dyslexia, which often stem from a fear of failure.
Comparing Lycopodium and Nux Vomica
Mary and Elisa compare Lycopodium with another popular remedy—Nux Vomica. While both can treat digestive complaints, the emotional profiles differ. Nux Vomica types are driven, intense, and impatient, often pushing through pain or discomfort to get things done. In contrast, Lycopodium individuals are more laid-back outwardly but deeply affected by anxiety, self-doubt, and the fear of underperforming.
Nux Vomica personalities also tend to overwork and overplan—even during rest or holidays—while Lycopodium people are more inclined to retreat and recover quietly, though they still want to be seen as competent.
Physical and Emotional Clues to Look For
Elisa explains that choosing the right remedy isn’t just about physical symptoms—it’s about matching those with emotional traits and patterns. She recommends looking for at least three strong indicators across physical and emotional areas. For Lycopodium, key clues include:
- Symptoms worse from 4–8 p.m.
- Right-sided issues (like eczema, pain, or throat inflammation)
- Gas, bloating, or overeating
- Anxiety around performance or failure
- Reading or word recall difficulties
Interestingly, Lycopodium can also help with skin conditions like eczema (especially right-sided) and even facial tics or involuntary movements.
A Family Favourite Remedy
Elisa points out that Lycopodium is one of those rare remedies that people often return to again and again. If it suits a person constitutionally, it tends to be effective across multiple situations—whether it’s a physical flare-up or emotional stress. This makes it a strong candidate for your home first aid kit.
Mary adds that Lycopodium often helps clarify the picture and open the door to deeper healing. It’s both versatile and transformative, especially when physical complaints are intertwined with emotional patterns.
