Join Jill this week as she discusses the difference between someone feeling truly heard versus someone hijacking a group setting. She uses the example of a Zoom call in which two participants dominated the conversation, going on lengthy tangents instead of following the facilitator's instructions. Jill offers the possibility that such behavior is not meant to be malicious and discusses some possible reasons for it, including nervous system dysregulation, ego protection, and general lack of self-awareness. As the leader of a group, Jill stresses the importance of politely yet firmly redirecting...

This week on Be YOU, join Jill as she revisits an exercise from in which listeners were asked to do a "brain dump" of their fears and worries and then rewrite/reframe them in positive ways. She encourages listeners to continue doing this exercise, even affirming that many people around the world are participating! The key part of the exercise now? As Jill explains, be aware of when you are speaking your fears and worries out loud, and immediately "flip the script" by saying the positive version out loud instead. Jill gives some examples, like if you find yourself complaining about someone...

Although she is in disbelief that she is finally saying this, welcome to the 300th episode of the Be YOU podcast! This week, Jill shares some highlights from the recent four-hour BeYOULive event where more than 150 women from around the world came together to celebrate 300 episodes and being themselves! At its heart, the event was really all about helping women let go of the “masks” they wear in everyday life - roles, behaviors, and ways that they see themselves that are preventing them from showing up as their true selves. Through a series of exercises, attendants, without shame or...

Jill truly gets profoundly personal in this episode with a heartfelt discussion, sharing her recent and emotionally devastating discovery that her vibrant, health-conscious father has been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. Known for his athleticism, emotional openness, and joyful presence, her father has always been Jill's hero, and she is now facing the stark reality of having to say goodbye.
What Jill shares in this episode of Be YOU, though, is more than a story about illness and grief. She reflects on the experience of witnessing death up close for the first time, despite a long career in nursing where she has comforted others through it. She explores the emotions of loss that she knows is coming, the resurfacing of old wounds, and the pressure that we sometimes feel to minimize our own pain in the face of others’ suffering.
This episode is also an honest and needed look at how we respond to people who are hurting, with Jill challenging some of the well-meaning phrases that we often default to such as “Keep me updated,” “Let me know if you need anything,” and “Thoughts and prayers,” explaining how even well-meaning words can unintentionally shift the burden to the person who is already struggling as it is. Instead, she offers practical, heartfelt alternatives that prioritize sincerity and tangible support.
Listen in for a chance to reflect on how to show up for others and, of course, how to receive care, too. Whether you’re in a season of grief, supporting someone who is, or simply want to communicate with more intention and love, this episode is one that you don't want to miss!
