John 1:5 tells us, "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."
Not that the darkness tried and failed once, long ago. Not that the darkness might lose someday. The darkness has not overcome it. Present tense. Ongoing. Undefeated. Right now, in the middle of whatever you are facing, the light is still shining. It has never stopped.
But sometimes we have to reposition ourselves to see it.
When you've been sitting in a dark room long enough, your eyes adjust. The darkness starts to feel normal. Comfortable, even. And when someone cracks the door and lets light pour in, your first instinct isn't relief — it's to squint. To turn away. To shield yourself from something that feels too bright, too exposing, too much. That's what the enemy counts on. Not that you'll reject the light outright, but that you'll get so accustomed to the dark that the light feels foreign.
But God says, come and see. Come closer. Let your eyes adjust to this instead.
The K.I.S.S. ~ Come and see!
When Philip found Nathanael in John 1:46 and told him about Jesus, Nathanael was skeptical. His response was essentially, "Can anything good come from there?" And Philip didn't argue. He didn't debate. He simply said, "Come and see."
That invitation changed everything. Not because Philip had all the answers, but because he knew that encountering Jesus firsthand would do what no argument ever could.
That same invitation is for you today. You don't need to have it all figured out before you step toward the light. You don't need to clean yourself up, sort through your doubts, or muster some superhuman faith. You just need to come. Come tired. Come broken. Come skeptical if that's where you are. But come.
Because here's what the darkness doesn't want you to know — it has no power over the light. None. Darkness is not the opposite of light in some evenly matched battle. Darkness is simply the absence of light. The moment light enters, darkness has to leave. It doesn't get a vote. It doesn't get to negotiate. It flees. Every single time.
And the light that lives inside of you — the Spirit of the living God — is the same light that spoke the universe into existence. The same light that split the Red Sea and walked out of a sealed tomb. That light doesn't flicker because your circumstances are hard. It doesn't dim because your faith feels small.
2 Corinthians 4:6 says, "For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ."
The light isn't just around you. It is in you. Planted there by a God who knew you would face dark seasons and refused to let you walk through them alone.
So stop staring at the darkness, sweet friend. Stop measuring its size, its depth, its reach. It wants your attention because your attention is the only power it has.
Instead, turn your face toward the One who is the Light of the World. Let Him illuminate what the darkness has been trying to hide — that you are loved, that you are held, that your story is not over, and that the very best part is still being written by a God who makes all things new.
Come and see. The light is shining. It always has been. And it always will be.
