Did you ever need to get a referral to go to a doctor? We have likely all been through it. Its a real pain some times, but in the grand scheme of things its not a huge deal. The specialist doesn’t want to be bombarded with patients who don’t need to seem them, and the insurance company has decided that its cheaper in the long run to pay a little extra to the general practitioner, to ensure they don’t waste money on the more expensive specialists.

What about other requirements though? How would you feel about being required to take an IQ test in order to qualify for a possibly life saving surgical procedure? Thats exactly what Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee is asking from its patients needing gastric bypass surgery. Many experts decrying this move, and despite assurances from BCBS, the IQ test is definitely a key part of the acceptance of benefits.

• Washington State legislates that anyone who provides any service that may be somehow related to healthcare, cannot date, or even talk about the possibility of a date (or marriage etc) with anyone who is a current patient, former patient, or even relative of a patient. Real issue is that they define healthcare worker so broadly that everyone from the optician to the dental Hygienist. Any more all encompassing and residents will have to start dating outside of the species.
