A Moment with Mart

On this episode of A Moment with Mart, I bring you Jordan Schmaltz. It was an electric show with Jswish 93.1 as we dove into many topics around sports, media, and life identities. I first met Jordan years ago when he played in the National Hockey League. He became a part of the early crowd and a staple in the Mt. Rushmore of professional hockey players I trained.  Jordan has always been witty and intelligent, but what stands out is his unique ability to remain himself as he tries to find new opportunities. He's authentic, and his current awareness has brought him to the media world. He...

Episode 6- The mini-series "The Art of Something" comes to a finish with my good friend Jp Martinez.  It's hard to put into words what this guy means to me. I first met Jp on a phone call near the end of 2020. I was anticipating a role with the San Francisco Giants; he was the assistant pitching coach then. I believe he thought we were having a short introduction, whereas I was under the impression we were having an interview.  Needless to say, he asked me about a specific certification I had on my resume. I had no idea what the certification was, and my heart started to beat so...

A Moment with Mart

Episode 5 of the Mini-Series on The Art of Something is with my friend Alex Easby.    I can't actually recall the moment I was introduced to Alex. I know it was a few years ago from a mutual friend I believe, but I can't give you the moment. To my memory, it was a classic situation where someone I knew wanted me to meet someone they knew. Either way, I ended up going on a podcast with him, and it was that incredible feeling where you felt at home communicating with a stranger.    Alex has a soothing way of communicating about him and an openness that has always intrigued...

Episode 4 - The Art of Something Mini-Series with the deep-thinking, curious brother of mine, Mr. Jake Butt. (@jakebutt) I first got in touch with Jake while he was playing with the Denver Broncos. What was supposed to be a quick phone call turned into a deep-dive conversation about life, the universe, and the reasoning behind our existence. I remember the moment distinctly. As I hung up the phone, I felt invigorated. From that day on, our friendship has only grown as we have shared some of the most profound and fulfilling conversations I’ve experienced on my journey with him.  Jake has...

Episode 3 with Coach Nak! Let's talk about perspective. I had a front-row seat to history over the last few years while watching Alyssa break through the walls of Major League Baseball as the first female coach in the big leagues.  I would never have been able to describe what this experience must have been like from her lens, nor would I ever try. We built a friendship, worked well together, and shared a curiosity for life that instantly gravitated me to her. I constantly asked the coach how she saw the world through the years. I couldn't wrap my head around what a Major League clubhouse...

Episode 2 of The Art of Something Mini-Series is with my good friend Brian Bannister. I was fortunate to coach alongside Banny for a few years in San Francisco, and it was a true honor to pick the brains of a master such as Banny. The first time I saw him, he was hovering over a computer with his hood over his head. He was dialed on a pitcher's mechanics at a level I had never seen before.  At that moment, he addressed me with a genuine smile and a presence that gravitated my soul toward his energy. However, I always wanted to pay respect to his precision and focus. Banny, whom I consider...

A Moment with Mart

Hello friends, I did a mini-series of podcasts nearly a year ago during the fall of 2023. I recorded these with a 40-minute time restraint. The platform I used to record was only allowed for such a time. If you have followed my podcast in the past, you know I love raw, authentic conversation. I've never been one for scripts. These podcasts coming up are short, impactful, and fun.  My friend Tyler Beede and I kicked off the mini-series. Ty and I met in 2021 during spring training with the San Francisco Giants. We bonded over breathwork and human performance. Our friendship was maintained...

On this episode, MindStrong Project founder Harvey Martin and Strength Coach Brian Peters have an amazingly energizing conversation with Rich Hill, the Head Baseball Coach at the University of San Diego.

In our conversation, Coach Hill shares his thoughts on how his success in coaching has been so sustainable.  A few themes stuck out - Relationships and Connection.  Coach Hill leans on influences such as Brené Brown, Nick Saban, and Mike Krzyzewski.  He expresses an approach of treating players with firmness, while also being an authentic human.  Brian and Harvey reflect how their own relationships with their leaders have held similar sentiments.

Furthermore, Coach Hill discusses the importance of cultivating a strong mindset.  He dives into the benefit of having a dynamic mental toolbox, and learning how to interact with fear.  One overarching theme encompassed the entire conversation - Gratitude.  Throughout the entire show, Coach Hill's mindset of abundance and appreciation were both inspiring and contagious.

Coach Hill has built the USD Toreros into one of the premier Division I baseball programs on the West Coast.  In his 33 years as a head coach at the collegiate level (22 at USD), he Coach Hill has amassed 28 winning seasons and is the youngest coach in the West Coast Conference (WCC) with 1,000 wins.  He is also the winningest coach, both active and all-time, in the WCC.  Coach Hill has seen his Toreros win 6 conference championships, and garnered national attention regularly - being ranked or receiving votes in 15 consecutive years.

Hill has coached dozens of All-Americans, a handful of Major Leaguers- highlighted by the Chicago Cubs' Kris Bryant, reached 8 NCAA tournaments, hosted an NCAA regional as a National seed in 2007, and was the U.S. Collegiate National Team Head Coach in 2015.

From our conversation with Coach, we also gathered that he is chasing every competitive edge possible, and leaning on his faith to impact the lives of collegiate players daily.  Coach Hill spends his days surfing, doing breathwork and meditation, speaking, and aiming to connect with others in the most authentic and vulnerable way.  After spending just an hour with Coach Hill, it's no surprise to see the success he's had at USD.

***Special Thanks to our great friend and mentor Logan Gelbrich, a former USD Torero himself, who connected us with Coach Hill.
