Welcome to another episode of the Sangyan Podcast! Today, we’ll be discussing a few easy steps that we can all take to help fight Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and ensure that antibiotics remain effective for future generations.
First up, take medicines only when needed. One of the easiest ways to combat AMR is to use antibiotics only when they are truly necessary. Remember, antibiotics don’t work for viral infections like the common cold or flu. Using them in these cases doesn’t help and actually gives bacteria a chance to become resistant, making future treatments harder to manage.
Next, it’s crucial to complete the full course of treatment. If your doctor has prescribed antibiotics, make sure you finish the entire course, even if you start feeling better before the treatment is over. Stopping early leaves some bacteria alive, which can then become stronger and resistant to the antibiotic. This makes it much harder to treat infections the next time around.
And here’s an important step we can all take: spread awareness about AMR. The more people understand the risks of misusing antibiotics, the better. Talk to your friends, family, and community about the dangers of AMR and the importance of using antibiotics responsibly. When everyone is aware of the issue, they’re less likely to misuse antibiotics, which helps protect the effectiveness of these essential medicines.
