What We Can Do to Help – A Few Easy Steps Welcome to another episode of the Sangyan Podcast! Today, we’ll be discussing a few easy steps that we can all take to help fight Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and ensure that antibiotics remain effective for future generations. First up, take medicines only when needed. One of the easiest ways to combat AMR is to use antibiotics only when they are truly necessary. Remember, antibiotics don’t work for viral infections like the common cold or flu. Using them in these cases doesn’t help and actually gives bacteria a chance to become resistant,...

Welcome to today’s episode of Sangyan Podcast! In this episode, we’ll be discussing how the world is coming together to tackle Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and what steps are being taken globally, especially in India, to fight this growing issue.
First up, let’s talk about global cooperation against AMR. AMR is a worldwide problem, and countries are working together to reduce unnecessary antibiotic use. A key part of this global fight is "World AMR Awareness Week," celebrated every year from 18th to 24th November. The goal of this week is to raise awareness about the correct use of antibiotics and to encourage good practices. The World Health Organization (WHO) and national governments work together to spread awareness, implement strict regulations, and develop national action plans to combat AMR.
Now, let's focus on India. India is playing a crucial role in raising awareness and fighting AMR. The National Action Plan (NAP) for AMR was launched in April 2017 by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The plan focuses on educating the public about the risks of improper antibiotic use and promotes responsible practices like avoiding self-medication and completing prescribed courses of antibiotics. Some key objectives of the NAP include:
- Raising awareness about responsible antibiotic use.
- Monitoring antibiotic resistance through enhanced surveillance.
- Strengthening infection prevention and control.
- Encouraging research and development for new treatments.
- Promoting collaboration between public health bodies, healthcare providers, and the public.
However, there are challenges. The implementation of India’s NAP for AMR has been slow due to limited funding and competing health priorities. To improve the situation, there is a need for better coordination between the central and state governments, as well as a dedicated funding mechanism. Civil society, the private sector, and the media also have important roles to play in supporting AMR efforts. Industries, such as pharmaceuticals and food production, must adopt responsible antibiotic practices.
Once the NAP is fully implemented, we’ll need a greater focus on monitoring, evaluation, and accountability to ensure success. Strong political support and active involvement from the private sector will help guarantee that antibiotics remain effective for future generations.
That’s it for today’s episode! The fight against AMR requires a global effort, and together we can make a difference. This is the final episode, but it's not the end. It's the beginning of our collective efforts toward the responsible use of antibiotics and better health. Spread awareness around you, use medicines responsibly, and be a part of this mission.
