info_outlineYour genes may not determine your destiny as much as you think. Your lifestyle, environment, and even your ancestors' experiences can shape your genetic expression.
In this episode, Kashif Khan dives into the fascinating world of genetics and functional genomics, shedding light on how both our genes and our environment influence our health. Recognizing this interplay is crucial if you want to live a long, healthy life.
Episode Notes
According to epigenetics, our genes are not our destiny but can be influenced by various factors. In fact, we can modify gene expression through our choices and experiences, even with transgenerational effects.
Genetics vs Functional Genomics
Genetics studies individual genes and their risks, while functional genomics takes a holistic view of the body's systems. Understanding genetics helps identify predispositions, but functional genomics considers how the body's pathways interact for a more comprehensive health perspective.
Role of the Environment in Epigenetics
Epigenetics shows that our environment and lifestyle impacts how our genes are expressed. Modern changes in agriculture and industrialization, as well as our stressed have shifted from our genetically adapted conditions.
Lifestyle Impact on Health Risks
Our lifestyle choices, such as diet and exercise, can influence how our genes are expressed. Epigenetics reveals that genes are not fixed destinies, but their expression is modifiable by our lifestyle choices.
