Grab The Business Opportunities That Present Themselves - Don’t Be Afraid Of Failure
Hello, I’m Granger Forson. Welcome to this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio. This week I’m speaking to John Fisher from Westway IT, who specialise in looking after the IT needs for micro and small businesses. What is interesting is hearing John’s reasons for starting the business. It starts with redundancy, but becomes about working with Core Values, one of which was loyalty. As always, there are some great takeaways from our conversation, including: - Grab the opportunities that present themselves to you. Don’t be afraid of failing. That’s not to say that you should be reckless, but try not to be overcautious The power of peer to peer networking to strengthen your network, and broaden your knowledge base - not just your client base. A business can be built on the values of education, loyalty and quality relationships. What I feel is really fascinating in our conversation is hearing just how the core values of the business are so vital to John and Westway IT. Also, how he doesn’t want the relationship between him and his clients to be purely transactional - he wants a proper working relationship with them. I know that, even if you’re not in the IT industry, you’ll find something of value in this episode. Your Business Is So Much Bigger When You Go Into The Virtual Space
Welcome to this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio. I’m Granger Forson and I’ve been speaking to Clare-Louise Freeman from Zig’s Exercise. Zig’s is a little different from other exercise businesses that you might have seen. They provide a safe, friendly space for people to explore their health, nutrition and wellness. Clare has got a lot of experience of being a business owner after starting on her scale up journey just over 25 years ago. We did cover an awful lot of ground during our conversation, including: - The decision to go with your gut. Just because your family, and those around you say that you should be going in one direction - that doesn’t mean you have to do as they say - The benefit to having the team working remotely - and even taking the entire business into the virtual space! What is so refreshing to hear is Clare’s enthusiasm. Not just for the industry that she’s in, but also the whole concept of running your own business. Enjoy! On this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio I’m speaking to Matthew Parsons from Surftech IT, who provide managed IT services to businesses. Matthew was actually a guest on ScaleUp Radio back in 2019, and it’s fascinating to see just how his company, but also Matthew himself as a leader and business owner have changed and developed in the intervening years. Plenty of ground covered, including: - The benefit of always investing back into the team, so always planning and working towards taking on the next member of staff - How to deal with the challenge of always looking at how to evolve in an industry that is ever-changing - The knowledge that you are always selling, and coming to that realisation whilst also learning how to be a good salesperson - Why you should definitely package up your services - but don’t over package. Keep the options simple - almost make your offering into a product Obviously, there is plenty in this conversation for business owners and leader of any size, any industry and any stage on your scale up journey. Leadership Presentation
On this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio we focus on Leadership. Leadership is a concept that means different things to each of us as business owners, depending on where you are on your scale up journey, and our own leadership style. So, if you’re a solo’preneur, or have a handful of people or have multiple layers of management larger business, the kind of leadership required will be different – but equally important wherever you are on your scaleup journey. To give you a quick flavour of some of the things we cover, we look at aspects of leadership including: - Establishing just what it means to be a Leader within a business. Is it just being The Boss? The Owner? The CEO? Or is there something more to it than that? - How to make sure that you are able to function as a Leader, and don’t keep get dragged back in to the day-to-day- running of the business. - When to change from being the only Leader in a business, to being a Leader of Leaders when it is no longer possible to the be the only one driving the business forward We also hear from Dr Lizzy Bernthal who gives her experienced take on Leadership within a business, talking about the importance of Trust and listing the C’s of Leadership. Once You Understand The Why Of Your Clients, The More Successful You’ll Be
On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, we’ll hear from Simon Washbrook who is the founder of Popcorn CRM, which is a simple to use CRM platform that is designed for small businesses. In basic terms, Simon and his team help small business owners keep track of their leads, referrals and all of their prospects through the development of a CRM program. Simon himself comes from a marketing background, but it was his realisation that small businesses needed a CRM that met their needs and didn’t overcomplicate things, and so the idea of popcorn was born. In the past 9 years the company has grown to 7 employees, which includes 3 developers who are constantly working on the software itself, and it’s progression. Please don’t be put off by the tech nature of Simon. His experience, challenges and advice are applicable to pretty much any industry, and we cover a lot of ground in this episode including: - The realisation that every part of a small business - the beating heart of it - is in sales. - How important it is to have a daily meeting, and for that meeting to be part of a larger rhythmt - making sure that the team are all working to the same timeframe - When it comes to recruitment, find a balance between budget and requirements. If you are led too much by budget, you won’t find the right person for your team. Simon was very honest about his role as a business owner and doesn’t shy away from the mistakes that he’s made, and the challenges he still faces now. Knowing The Difference Between A Good Client & A Bad Client Has Cost Money - But Made Money Too!
On this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio, we’ll hear from Hamish Gill who is the director of F8 Creates. F8 Creates is a creative agency that covers branding, graphic design photography and video. The company actually came out of 3 separate businesses in 2009 which covered the separate elements that we’ve just listed, and it was suggested that they work together - which is what Hamish and Greg - another of the directors - did, with a third businessman, Joe. Joe has since left F8 Creates, but there’s now a solid team of 8 people that have really taken the business to a place where Hamish feels there’s space for major growth. As always, there’s lots of valuable content within our conversation, including: - Running a successful business can’t just be about the money. You have to have a passion for the work, and try to pass that passion onto the team - The benefit of treating all of your clients as retainer clients, meaning that you can apply the same form of planning and system to each client, whilst still retaining the individuality that each client deserves - Knowing the difference between a good client and a bad client, and when to move away from a particular client - even if they’re bringing money into the business You can hear the passion from Hamish about being a business owner and a director of a few companies, radiating throughout our conversation. It’s definitely something to aspire to. Making Communication Work Well In A Small Team
On this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio I’m speaking to Duncan Sutcliffe from Sutcliffe & Co Insurance Brokers. The clue is in the name - it’s a family business that started in the 1980’s and insurance has been in the family well before that. In fact, Duncan is the fourth generation of Sutcliffe’s who work in insurance. The company has experienced some growth since Duncan took over, and even managed to grow during the pandemic. All of this is countered by the fact that the company itself - the people within it, the head count - has shrunk. As you’ll hear Duncan works hard to break the company, and the culture, out of the stereotype of what an Insurance Brokers should be - whilst still striving for excellence for their clients. It really was a wide-ranging conversation, with lots of value for you no matter what level of business owner you are. We discussed: - The power of becoming a virtual team member for many clients, rather than a generic supplier or service provider - The challenge of moving communication from just ‘top to bottom’ within the company, to ‘multi-directional’; wanting the team to have a say in the culture and the direction of the business. - The benefit that an operations director can bring to any business, freeing up you - as the business owner - to make sure that your energies are focused in the right direction. What’s was also noticeable during our conversation is that Duncan is passionate about making sure that the company gives a good, personal level of services to their clients - rather than *just* providing insurance. Duncan can be found here: Who Moved My Cheese? By Dr Spencer Johnson - Winning Minds by Simon Lancaster - Scaling up your business isn't easy, and can be a little daunting. Business Rhythms

Business Rhythms
On this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio we have a great presentation and discussion, all centred around Business Rhythms. First of all, you’ll hear from Granger Forson explaining a little more about Business Rhythms; what they are, how we should approach them and the benefit that implementing them can bring to your business. Arguably, the Business Rhythm, alongside the 90 Day Planning that you will have heard us talk about before, is the most important part of running your business. Essentially, a Business Rhythm is a structure of daily, weekly and monthly meetings carefully put together to ensure that you bridge the gap between strategy and execution consistently well – ensuring that you do the right things and that they are done well. Of course, most of you may already have a rhythm of sorts within your business – but we find that most rhythms are focused on the day to day and miss some really important aspects. We cover some of those and others, including: - What you need to do to get the rhythm right. Maybe the rhythm you’ve already got isn’t the right one for your business? - Why you should still create a rhythm, even if you’re a solo business owner. - How casual encounters can ruin a good Business Rhythm Of course, as always, there is so much more in the episode. Also you’ll hear a panel discussion where a group of business owners talk about their Business Rhythm; how they incorporate and maintain their own rhythm - and how you should go about creating and maintaining your own. A full list of the business owners featured in the panel discussion will be in the show notes. On this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio, I’m speaking to Ahmad Qayyum from Bluewater Accounting. Bluewater Accounting specialise in the property sector, working with all aspects of the industry - landlords, property investors, construction and trade businesses. Ahmad started the business in 2017 after working in the corporate sector, and now has a team of 9 serving 140 clients. As you listen to Ahmad’s scale up journey so far you’ll hear that he’s no stranger to risk, but it’s a risk that has definitely paid off. We covered an awful lot in our conversation including: - The process of determining your niche within your industry, and how much networking can solidify your place in that niche. - How to react to the realisation that the staff you have isn’t the right one for the business - and how that expensive lesson helps you with future recruitment. - With a team that is working remotely, and in different countries, how do you keep everyone working as one, to the same values and the same goals. What I think you’ll find interesting in our conversation is that Ahmad is unlike any other accountant that we’ve spoken to. He’s passionate about being a business owner and a business leader - rather than only being an accountant. It’ll be interesting to get Ahmad back on in a few years time to see how he’s progressed from where he is now. I Knew Only A Little About Business - But A Lot About Sales
On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, I’ve gone back into the archives to look again at one of the great guests that we had. The respected author, speaker and expert on the subject of scaling up Jan Cavelle appeared on ScaleUp Radio. She is someone who definitely speaks from a place of experience, having run and scaled up a furniture business which started as purely a sales business - but ended up with 2 factories and 40 employees. The conversation is, without doubt, the most value-filled one that we’ve ever done on ScaleUp Radio. If you’re someone who is looking to scale up your business, there is so much in this episode for you. Amongst the subjects we cover are: - The importance of focus to the scaling up of your business. You need to be committed to it. - What is the difference between growth and scaling up? Aren’t they just two sides of the same coin? - The benefit of putting a system for scaling up in place - and understanding that a system is only a part of the solution. - The power of the phrase ‘Hire Slow, Fire Fast’ and how that can fit into the culture of your business These are really just the brief highlights. There is so much covered in this episode, and it was great to have someone like Jan sharing her expertise and knowledge. The Happiness & Wellbeing of My Staff Come First - Even Before My Clients!
On this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio, I speak to Helen Bower from Adder Bookkeeping. If you listen to some of the panel discussions that we’ve had in the past you might already be familiar with Helen’s voice - but we’ve never heard about her particular journey before. Helen started Adder Bookkeeping after doing a degree in Languages and found herself working in Exports. In 2000, life took a hand and she discovered a love of bookkeeping - and Adder Bookkeeping was born. It’s clear from our conversation that Helen is such a fun, lively character - but that doesn’t detract from the fact that she is a passionate, committed business owner who has her clients and her team at the heart of everything that she does. As always, there is plenty to take away from this episode, and we covered an awful lot of subjects including: - What the one question is that you should ask yourself before setting up your own business. - The difference between doing a profession as part of a company - and making that profession, that role, the root of your own business - The process that changed the business into one that works only in cloud accounting. - How social media isn’t just there for marketing, it can be used for successful recruitment too! Don’t worry if you’re not a bookkeeper, an accountant or work in finance - there’s an awful lot in this conversation with Helen that will help you and your business, no matter what industry you’re in. Cash Panel Discussion
Hello and welcome to this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio. I’m Granger Forson and I’ve been listening back to the 150 or so episodes of ScaleUp Radio - and I wanted to bring you one that really caught my attention. I’m taking you back to February of 2020 to hear again from a couple of business owners discussing something that is pretty much the lifeblood of all businesses - cash. You’ll hear from two business owners who will bring their own unique take, along with their experiences and lessons learned, to talk about cash and it’s relationships with their business. You’ll hear from: Helen Bower from Adder Bookkeeping Matthew Jackson from Jackson Family Funeral Directors They talked about: - Why it’s important to look at the cash flow in your company - What is more important to the future of your business, cash or profitability? - What is a cash conversion cycle - and how often should we look at it? - Should we have a cash reserve and, if so, how much should it be? - What are the numbers we should be looking at when it comes to our cashflow. As you can imagine, they cover many more things along the way, with plenty for you to take away no matter what business you’re in - or where you are on your own scale up journey. The 7 Financial Levers
On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, we have a great presentation and panel discussion, all centred around The 7 Financial Levers. You will have heard us talking about the Power Of Small Change in previous episodes. In fact, there’s a link to the episode all about the Power Of Small Change in the show notes. Briefly, the Power of Small Change is focusing on marginal improvement within your business; small and simple actions over a period of time, having a cumulative effect. The 7 Financial Levers are one of the tools that we use to identify a small change that we can enact, specifically within the cash or financial area of the business. The good thing, you don’t need to be a financial expert to understand these levers, they’re very simple concepts that you can discuss them with your team, or trusted network. I’ll explain more about this during the episode. We’ll also be covering: - The process of deciding which cash lever to pull, and at what time - and what benefit, or small improvement that will bring about in your business - Why the length of time that it takes for clients to pay us - or how long we give for the clients to pay us - should be reviewed regularly. - Why discounting is generally only a good thing for the client, rather than benefitting the business owner in the long term. You’ll also hear from Dave Perrigo from Perrigo Consultants, who will give some insights into the power of the 7 Financial Levers, and the effect that they have had on his business. Finally, there’s a panel discussion with a group of business owners about the 7 Financial Levers and the way that they all use it within their own businesses; the challenges that they’ve faced implementing the 7 Levers - and how they’ve overcome them. This is an incredibly valuable episode for any small business owner, and I know that you’ll find something here that you can immediately put into practise in your own scale up journey. It's All Bout Keeping Your Own Identity Within A Franchise
On this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio we want to give you a chance to listen to some of the great content from the back catalogue of the podcast. Back in August of 2019, I spoke to Ian Priest from the Independent Banking Consultancy. It was a fascinating conversation, so we thought that we would give you a chance to hear it again. Ian has got incredible banking experience through his many years in the industry, and it was fascinating to hear about that transition from working for a big company, to working for a franchise. In this episode, we’ll cover: - How to make the decision between a franchise and working as a sole trader - The way to utilise power of the group of a franchise, which you might not have as a one man business - If you’ve built up a business as part of a franchise, is there anything there that you can sell on? - What goes into the decision as to whether or not you’re going to take on any employees This is a fascinating look at what it means to have your own identity as part of a franchise, which Ian has carved out for himself very well. It’s a worthwhile listen if you’ve ever thought about buying into a franchise yourself - or creating one for others to buy into. How Scalable is Your Business?
On this weeks episode we join the latest ScaleUp club with the panel discussion and presentation around the theme of scalability and the TVR test. This is a great litmus test of business scalability! By learning what you should be prioritising in your business by applying the TVR test to your key products and services you can start to scale and accelerate your growth. Most of us get caught in what has been described as the owner's trap, essentially where we create a business that is over reliant on us. In this episode, Louise explains how to use the TVR framework to help break the cycle and reduce the dependency of the business on you. The information presented by Louise is a brilliant eye opener in terms of where your business is and how you can begin to create a more resilient and scalable business. In addition to a Q&A session we also hear from various business owners in this episode as they talk about where their businesses are and how using the TVR test has given them ideas of how to grow and scale up appropriately. It’s The Set Of Your Sails Rather Than The Direction Of The Wind That Determines Where You End Up
Welcome to this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio, where I’ll be talking to Angela Podmore the founder and CEO of Kinetic PR. They are a PR consultancy that specialise in helping organisations to scale and have grown from local to international since they started in 2004. Angela is a real powerhouse of a business owner, and that comes across in this conversation as we cover so many subjects in just the first few minutes! Within this episode, though, is some genuine advice that you can put into practise on your business straight away. Just some of the highlights from our conversation are: - How to identify your competitive edge, and be passionate about your difference within the marketplace. And how knowing your difference will also help you with values and culture within the business. - The importance of ‘putting your heart’ into your business, and not always letting your head make the decisions. - Instilling in your team that their ideas and solutions to client problems are just as valid as anyone else's. You can hear Angela’s passion right throughout this episode, and it’s a passion that is, hopefully, infectious and helps you with your own scale up journey. A Chance Conversation Led Me To Buy The Business. Let Me Tell You What I Did Wrong
On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, we hear from Simon O Gorman, the owner of Adapt IT. Adapt IT have been running since 2001, but Simon only took over the business in 2021, after family circumstances put him in touch with the owner, Martin, which led to a conversation about the business being for sale. In fact, one of the aspects of the conversation is talking to Simon about the process of acquiring Adept IT, which only happened during 2021. It’s a fascinating look at what goes into an acquisition, and some of the challenges that Simon faced. There’s also quite a bit else that we covered in our conversation, including: - Ensuring that every client feels unique to your business. They should feel that they aren’t treated like ‘just another client’ - Why acquiring a business is not something that you should just decide to do - do your homework, and make sure you have a good network of people around you who have experience, especially lawyers! - How you go about pushing your team in their work - without pushing them too far, or not far enough! This is a great conversation, and it was good to hear Simon be so open and honest about acquiring Adept IT, and talk about some of the things that didn’t quite go to plan, as well as the things that went well. It won’t matter how long you’ve been a business owner, which industry you’re in or where you are on your scale up journey - you’ll definitely find some value in this episode. You Can’t Be Great At Everything - Know Your Skills
On this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio, I’m speaking to Rachel Taplin, CEO of Media Matchmaker. It’s a unique business, certainly for ScaleUp Radio, in that it connects organisations and entrepreneurs with journalists, who are looking for help with a specific story or subject. Rachel’s career trajectory is a fascinating one, including an incredibly successful franchise called Mums In Control, but it’s great to hear Rachel’s drive to help SME’s right across her career. This is undoubtedly her passion, and it’s refreshing to see that she’s managed to turn it into a successful business. As always, there’s is a lot of ground covered in our conversation including: - The very distinct difference between PR and Marketing, and what the power of the two is when it comes to your business - Just because you might think that the story about your business isn’t of interest to anyone, doesn’t mean that a journalist won’t want to speak to you about it. - Structure your business in a way that you can still survive, even if you lose your biggest client. Essentially, don’t put all your eggs in one basket. - Sales and marketing is all rooted in relationships. Talking to one person, being the only contact for a client is so powerful. Don’t think that this episode is only for people who work in the media, or are looking to be an ‘influencer’ - there are some genuinely practical pieces of advice from Rachel in our conversation that can be used in the marketing strategy of any sized business, no matter where they are in their scale up journey. I’m Not Motivated By Money - I Just Want To Serve My Customers In A World Class Way!
Hello, Granger Forson here again with this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio, where I’m speaking to Tom Hughes co-founder of GembaDocs and 3rd Digital and partner of Lumen Electronics. Tom’s journey was already a fascinating one before he even started GembaDocs, but his scale up journey since then is a great story, and definitely one that all other business owners can learn from. The conversation was pretty wide-ranging, and we covered a lot of ground including: - You need to experience failure, to make you realise how great the successes are - Follow the advice that an experienced business owner gives you, and don’t let pride get in the way - The best marketing is making an incredible product that your clients want; they talk about it and do the marketing for you, meaning that you don’t have to spend money marketing it! As you’ll hear, Tom is a great talker and has so much value and experience to pass on to you, whatever industry your in - and whatever stage of the scale up journey you’re at. Franchising, You're Allowed To Make Mistakes
On this weeks episode of Scale Up Radio I’m joined by Lynsey Le Keux. Lynsey is the owner of Le Keux Vintage, a specialist vintage event company. They offer experience events themed around the 1950s from make up and hairstyles to full blown time-warp experience packages that embody everything we love about 1950’s America – think American diners, Happy Days, Greece, rock and roll. Lynsey started Le Keux Vintage back in 2007 and like many startup businesses this was supported initially by a full time day job and working evenings taking backdrops and various props to clients houses and other venues before Lynsey took the plunge and went full time with her business. Over the years Lynsey has extended the business model to include their own venues for themed parties and events, full makeovers, a range of vintage cosmetic products on a subscription basis and latterly into offering Le Keux franchises. Join myself and Lynsey as we explore the highs and lows of her scaleup journey so far. We discuss the key milestones and challenges along the way, and where she got things right and where she feels she didn’t – including a discussion around the decision to franchise the business. Every business owner’s story is different and Lysney speaks so candidly and eloquently about her Scale Up journey and offers some real insight into the opportunities and challenges that we face along the way, and there are some great takeaways for all of us whatever the stage we are at. Checklists For Your Business - InFlight Checks

Checklists For Your Business - InFlight Checks
On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, we have a presentation and a panel discussion around the idea of checklists. Now, this may sound pretty simple and straightforward, but we look at a different aspect and a different way of looking at them, and the power of how they can be used really effectively. And we also look specifically at some checks that we have developed to help businesses that are scaling up to make sure that they are doing the right things and keeping a check on things. We call those the InFlight Checks. If the term is a little alien to you, In Flight Checks is a process that business owners should be doing, to make sure that they are thinking about the right things as they scale up and that they’r not missing things. This presentation looks at the benefits of having In Flight Checks, and checklists in general; the power of them to help shape the present and future of your business. We also talk about how the checklist isn’t necessarily just for the business owner; it’s something that you could use throughout the team, and we can see how different people have different perspectives on aspects of the business. In the airline industry it’s often the co-pilot that is reading out the checks, and the pilot that is performing them, so that there is that balance. There’s also some great practical advice about how often you should be performing the InFlight Checks - and where might checklists be appropriate within your business. As well as the presentation, there is a panel discussion of business owners around using InFlight Checks, and other checklists, within their businesses. You’ll also hear a lot of talk about tools for InFlight Checks. If you’d like to find out more about getting access to any of those tools, you can email Sam Bailey from The SL Shop: Matt Busby from The Name Label Company: Faith Guest from Tools of the Trade: Matthew Parsons from SurfTech IT: Peter Chatterley from The Talent Hackers: Stu Avis from Audacious Creative: Louise Blunt from BizSmart: Clare Vale from Sign Solutions: Hannah Haffield from Make More Noise: Nigel Busby from Incontrol Marketing Group: Resources: Atomic Habits by James Clear - The Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande -

There’s No Such Thing As The Perfect Leader - You Can’t Know Everything
On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, I’m talking with Jake Bailey from Toord. Toord are unlike almost any other business that we’ve ever had on ScaleUp Radio; they are marketing experts that work exclusively with estate agents. So, that’s property photographs, floorpans and virtual tours. As you’ll hear, Jake is quite young, but has already gained some great experience as a business owner, and his enthusiasm is infectious. As always, there is a great range of areas covered in our conversation, including: - The fact that not only has business gone more digital, but selling, or prospecting, has been more successful in a digital world - How living with ADHD can affect your decision-making and creative process as a business owner. - Being very definite in what separates you from your competition, and sticking with that principal - A lot of working with other people comes down to expectations. Expectations of your staff - and yourself Jake is a fascinating person and it was a real joy to speak to him. Aside from him as a person, his scale up journey, and the lessons and challenges he’s experienced so far mean that you’ll definitely have plenty to take away from this episode. Sales Is Hard Work - And Hard Work Leads To More Luck In Your Business
Welcome to ScaleUp Radio. I’m Granger Forson and this week I’ve been speaking to Jonathan Viney from JV Consultancy Group which specialises in helping organisations with their sale performance. As we’ve said on previous episodes, there are so many people who don’t fully realise the potential of selling within their business. Of course, they understand sales - but the actual selling is something that is a little too complex for them. Jonathan and JV Consultancy aim to help with all of that. Just like all other episodes of ScaleUp Radio, there is a lot of value in this conversation with Jonathan. We cover a lot of ground, including: - How the culture of your business can affect the sales, far more than you would think - The power of referrals when it comes to growing your base of clients, which comes from extensive networking. - The power of focussing on what the customer needs, not what you think they want As you’ll hear, Jonathan has used his 17 years at JV Consultancy well. He’s created a successful international business that is scaling up very well. I know that you’ll get something from this conversation that you can put into practise straight away in your own scale up journey. Nurturing Staff To Develop The Team
Hello and welcome to Scale Up Radio, I'm Granger Forson and this week I'm talking to Steve Ackroyd from The Job Guru. A recruitment firm based in Gloucester, where they have been helping various companies recruit staff to cope with the new challenges of a growing business. The Job Guru has been running for just over three years now and experienced the milestone of running for one year when the first Covid lockdown kicked in. Since then this recruitment firm has managed to scale up several business and bring the appropriate people to make up the key framework of many great businesses. After the Covid 19 pandemic many businesses have found that they are in need of more staff to deal with the demand of a re-emerging world. Steve has been right there, helping to bring those best suited to those roles and to show how nurturing staff can develop amazing team members and colleagues that can last a lot longer than you might expect." Steve talks about his experiences with recruitment, and how sometimes the role that a business thinks it needs isn't necessarily the role they should be advertising for. Steve also goes on to explain how unique The Job Guru is, and the benefits of taking the time to get to know each client and lay out a roadmap for future success when they go on to scale up their business. Thinking of future growth and how to create the best team possible in your business, Steve explains some of the intricacies of The Job Guru's methods and how they can save employers valuable time by providing all of the information required before they go onto make the decision of bringing in someone new. Always Be Recruiting

Always Be Recruiting
On this episode of ScaleUp Radio we have a presentation and discussion for you. This time, we are looking at Recruitment, or Hiring, within your business. It’s a subject that so many business owners *think* they understand, but then end up getting burned when they arrive at the point of taking on the first member of their team. So, what we have in this episode is a presentation, which will cover: - Just how much a ‘bad hire’ can affect the business, and how long that effect can last - What it means to ‘Always Be Recruiting’ - what does that look like? What is a ‘People Bank’? - When does it make sense to go from outsourcing to recruitment; to actually take someone in as staff? - The power of referrals, and whether or not you should be using recruitment agencies Within the presentation, you’ll also hear from David Lynes from Unique IQ who talks about the process he uses when it comes to recruiting, and why, if you see him on LinkedIn, he will constantly have the phrase ‘We’re Hiring’ on his profile. Following the presentation, there is a panel discussion with a group of business owners around the subject of recruitment, looking specifically at the idea of ‘Always Be Recruiting’, and they will share their experiences, thoughts and lessons surrounding that subject. One of the things to point out is that we really only touch on one particular aspect of recruiting for your business. Don’t worry, though, we’ll be looking at other areas in future episodes of ScaleUp Radio. As always, there is an awful lot of value in this episode; no matter what industry you’re in, or where you are on your scale up journey. You Can Be A Local Business, Backed By A National Company
Hello, I’m Granger Forson, here with this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio. I’m speaking with Richard Hubble from It’seeze Web Design Gloucester. The company does pretty much what it says on the tin; helping small business grow by building them a professional looking website and efficient digital marketing. Richard has been involved in the world of digital marketing and design for quite some time, even though this business is only a few years old. And it’s this experience that we get to hear about - and you get to benefit from! We cover an awful lot of ground during our conversation, including: - How shifting the thinking, as a business owner, to a a digital model, can help you deal with extreme situations like the recent pandemic - The process of making a franchise *feel* like your very own business - The importance of having a criteria when it comes to new clients; are THEY a good fit for YOU? If not - why are you doing business with them? Richard, as you’ll hear, is incredibly passionate about his business, and his industry; so there is quite a bit of a value to pick up from listening to this conversation. Amazing People Do Amazing Things
On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, I’m speaking to Julie Kent MBE. As you’ll hear, Julie has quite a few roles - and we do touch on a few of them - but she’s mainly here to talk about the role she has with the Pied Piper Appeal, which is a charity that works to make a difference to sick and disabled children in Gloucestershire. I’ll let Julie tell the story as to how she became involved with the charity, but she’s changed from fundraiser, to Trustee - to where she is now; which sees her helping out at the shop, overseeing fundraising - and being involved in so many aspects of running the charity. As well as talking through Julie’s involvement with the charity, we also cover: - the benefit to a business in choosing a Charity Of The Year; and making the decision as soon as possible - working to your strengths is best. Know what you do well, and outsource the rest - how to use your own life experience to help whichever charity you decide to help out. The work that Julie does is incredible, and it’s clear to hear the passion that she has for the charity and the work that it does. Think Big And Believe In Yourself. You Deserve Your Great Success
On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, we’ve got something a little special. As part of a BizSmart meeting, we had a presentation from Mark Wright. Mark is the CEO of Climb Online, a very successful digital marketing agency. You may also know him, however, from the TV show The Apprentice, which he won in 2014. As a result of that Lord Sugar invested in his business and is on the board of directors. In this presentation from a couple of months ago, Mark talks us through his business journey and the challenges he’s faced and overcome along the way. As you can imagine, there is an awful lot of value in this episode. Mark talks about the process of appearing on, and winning, The Apprentice, as well as also covering: - How luck and having ‘famous’ friends isn’t as important as being an industry expert. Know your sector - and be known for knowing your sector - The adage ‘Hire slow, fire fast’ is so true. We’ve talked about it before on ScaleUp Radio - but Mark’s take on *why* it’s so true is worth a listen - What the *real* key to a successful business is. - The best relationship to have with your employees; how to get the best out of them, for good and bad There’s also a section at the end of the presentation where other business owners get to ask him a few questions. Mark is an incredibly successful entrepreneur, and it’s clear how passionate he is about not only his own business - but helping other business owners to succeed also. You’ll definitely find something in this episode that will go towards your own scale up journey and help to make youmake you a better business owner. Planning Presentation
On this week’s episode of ScaleUp Radio, we have another presentation. If you’re a regular listener to ScaleUp Radio you’ll know that every month we look at another aspect of scaling up your business and there’ll be links to a couple of the previous presentations in the show notes. This time around we’re talking about planning. There’s a great quote “Plans are essentially worthless, but planning is everything” that is perfect for business planning, because it’s not the plan that is the important thing here - but the process of planning and thinking about your business. So, in this episode there’s a lot of valuable content. Amongst it, we’ll cover: - The benefit of planning; and that’s outside the obvious aspect of ‘knowing what the next step is for your business’ - The process of beginning to shape the plan, and bringing the team along with you As well as the presentation, there is also a panel discussion with a group of business owners where we dive a little deeper into the subject of strategy and planning for your business, and how it fits into your scale up journey. There’ll be a full list of the business owners in the show notes. Just a quick note, too, about the fact that you’ll hear me talking about tools and illustrations which we use at Biz Smart to illustrate some of the points that I was making. My Role Is Setting The Direction, And Making Sure That We’re All On The Same Journey!
On this episode of ScaleUp Radio, we hear from Katy Raines who is the founder and CEO of Indigo Limited. They are a small consultancy business who work solely in the cultural and heritage sectors across the UK and Ireland Initially, Katy started out in the creative arts - as a performer and musician - but the realisation of the life of a freelancer meant that she wanted more order, more structure to her career. After a couple of other job moves, which Katy talks about in our conversation, she decided to go into consultancy, back in 2003. As you can imagine, the past 18 years has seen huge changes in the cultural and heritage sectors; social media, arts funding structures - but that hasn’t stopped Indigo from growing. They now have a staff of four, and have greatly increased the income of the business during that time. Also, Indigo run a number of research programmes, which proved invaluable for clients, and the sector as a whole, when it came to understanding the next steps to make during the pandemic. It’s an incredibly interesting aspect to the work that Katy and Indigo do. This is fascinating conversation about an industry that we rarely cover on ScaleUp Radio and, as always, we cover a lot of ground, including: - How to compete with companies that are much larger than yours - Dealing with opposition and suspicion when offering something for free - The challenge of structuring the business so that it will, eventually, go on without you Don’t worry if you’re not in the arts, culture or heritage sector - this episode contains a lot of value for all business owners. It’s also worth pointing out too, that this was recorded at the tail end of 2021. Obviously, the situation regarding live performances and theatres has changed since then - and will be different again outside the UK. Always best to check with the venue that you’re due to be attending.
