Is it beneficial to health as many claim or is it a PUFA that’s bad for your health? Jacob recently published an analysis of various fish oils with the team at Consumer Labs, looking at oxidative toxicity and purity of a wide variety of commercially available fish oils. We discuss omega-3 and health, fish oils and oxidation, the science of seed oils and health, and, as a bonus, the problem with chocolates. Jacob’s Discussion Notes Topics to cover Omega-3 paper – Overall, our results revealed that 68% (23/34) of flavored and 13% (5/38) unflavored consumer Ω3 supplements exceeded the TOTOX upper limit set by the Global Organization for EPA and DHA (GOED) voluntary monograph standard of ≤ 26, with 65% (22/34) flavored supplements and 32% (12/38) unflavored supplements failing the PV upper limit of ≤ 5 and 62% (21/34) flavored supplements exceeding the p-AV upper limit of ≤ 20. What’s important is that peroxide was still significantly different in those with added versus non added extracts (0.04) almost double the PV How does fish oil metabolize? Peroxides, then aldehydes (Ω-3HHE & Ω-6 HNE, etc.) Why do I think it probably doesn't matter? 2 big studies – in the first study, after seven weeks of supplementation with 8 grams of oil per day, the authors found no signs of oxidative stress in any of the groups after looking at nine different measures (4-HHE, 4-HNE, 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α, alpha-tocopherol, total glutathione, glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and C-Reactive Protein) of oxidative stress in the blood and urine 4. This study demonstrated that high dosages of highly oxidized fish oil do not induce oxidative stress in our bodies.” “The second study was conducted by the same group and used the same study design, but looked at four additional markers of oxidative stress related to vascular inflammation (intercellular adhesion molecule 2 (sICAM-2), soluble vascular adhesion molecule 1 (sVCAM-1), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and oxidized LDL cholesterol) 5. Again, no impact on these markers was found with consumption of abnormally oxidized fish oil.” BUT point to consider is that may have adverse effects on lipids Would want to point out that ICAM and VCAM does How should I think more generally about oxidized oils? The hallmark of type 2 diabetes is insulin resistance. While many are unable to answer the question of why a formerly rare disease now afflicts the majority of the population, we go over research dating back to 1964 that makes it clear that we have a pretty good idea of what causes insulin resistance. Scientists can easily induce insulin resistance in humans. How do they do it, and what might it tell us about what has caused our epidemic of diabetes? Ep. 14: How a Common Asian Genetic Mutation Leads to Chronic Disease, and What to Do—with Matt Quinn and Dr. Brian Kerley Introduction We look at a paper enlightening what causes chronic disease, in the context of a huge population of people who suffer from the most common human mutation, to the aldehyde dehydrogenase enzyme that detoxifies both alcohol and seed oil metabolites, the ALDH2*2 mutation. We discuss how this mutation is thought to affect the people who have it through the lens of the paper at hand. This was a difficult video for me to edit, as both Matt and Brian share their experiences with the topic we are discussing in their own families. Ep. 0: What VICE Left Out: Bitcoin and Seed Oils Back in February, Dr. K, the , was contacted by , a reporter for the news website VICE. She had some questions about why the seed oil topic had become a 'big thing' in the bitcoin world. He mentioned me as being knowledgeable about the seed oil and health topic, and suggested I reach out to her. I did, and we had a nice chat, although it probably went on longer than she was expecting. I've often heard it's wise to record conversations with journalists, and we did so via Zoom, to which she agreed. We had a pleasant enough conversation, and she listened to me at length (~48 minutes). I followed up with (see that link for the file I sent her, references below), and offered to send more. She didn't get back to me for any follow-up discussion, and then finally the article came out: "" I'll not editorialize about the many problems with that article, but the major one is they never addressed the research from institutions like the NIH and the AHA showing that there are credible reasons to think that the benefits of seed oils are oversold, and that there are real reasons to fear harmful effects. "Misinformation is a two-edged sword in the seed oil debate, however. Figureheads like Shanahan, after all, believe that most mainstream dietary guidance around fat consumption is built on lies, the kind that have quietly fueled America’s major health epidemics for decades. Like Bitcoin itself, the anti-seed oil stance reflects a skepticism of authority, one that is often not unfounded in the least but which can quickly snowball, echoed and amplified online." It's rather routine at this time for journalists to spread misinformation while pretending to be preventing it, and this is a perfect example of that. So I am presenting here the full discussion I had with VICE, so you can be the judge yourself of the value of what they elected to leave out while claiming that being concerned about seed oils is "misinformation". Journalists have editors, and many publications have clear—often unadmitted—editorial biases. I have no particular reason to think that Audrey wrote the bias into this story, so I won't blame her for it. I appreciate the time that she took to speak to me. I do blame VICE, however, which I think is fair. They printed a biased, misleading article, while ignoring that there are valid scientific reasons to think seed oils are problematic.
