301: Justice, Love and Facilitating Organizational Healing
What does it take to create lasting change in an organization that is rooted in dignity, justice, and care? Too often, leadership and consulting focus on quick fixes instead of investing in deeper and necessary cultural shifts. Today, we explore how organizations can foster true transformation by embracing a more holistic approach and prioritizing what truly matters. Our guest, , is a mission-driven consultant and author of the new book . With over 25 years of experience, she helps social justice organizations repair harm, strengthen leadership, and align with their values. Drawing from a unique background in acupuncture, nonprofit management, and organizational development, Ora brings a holistic, human-centered approach to change. In today’s eye-opening conversation, Ora breaks down her approach to transformational consulting. She sees organizations as living systems where true change requires healing, connection, and cultural awareness. Quoting the Talmud, she reminds us: “You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.” This belief guides her work, helping organizations move beyond surface-level fixes to deep, justice-driven transformation. She also explains how dominant cultural forces, including white supremacy, shape workplace dynamics and decision-making, before unpacking how organizations can begin to address and heal from these damaging patterns. By aligning values with action, she helps leaders create workplaces that don’t just function but truly embody justice and care. Tune in for her powerful insights on how to build lasting, meaningful change together! Key Points From This Episode: Ora’s unique background ranging from acupuncture to nonprofit management. [02:40] Insights from a profound quote in the Talmud included Ora’s book. [06:38] Ways that Ora’s background in acupuncture has shaped how she consults. [11:51] The three different types of consulting and the details of transformational consulting. [15:01] How Ora chooses which organizations to partner with: shared values and goals. [18:43] Types of organizations that Ora typically works with and the issues she addresses. [22:00] Where to start in the process of undertaking organizational change. [23:53] The hardest, most intractable problems Ora has come up against. [27:53] Recognizing how the culture of white supremacy has shaped organizational cultures. [31:12] Ora’s holistic understanding of systems, how it differentiates her as a consultant, and the top thing she wants listeners to take from her book. Love mercy, now. Walk humbly, now. You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.” — Ora Grodsky [0:06:40] “That's how I see transformational consulting: [it means] creating spaces within which people can have the kind of process where they deeply connect to self, deeply connect to each other, and see a wider view of the system that they're in and how we got here.” — Ora Grodsky [0:16:51] “Only looking at the single bottom line of ‘Where's profit?’ is what has gotten us to the verge of potential extinction with climate disaster; because we're looking for cheaper and faster. As long as we're [always] looking for cheaper and faster – we are not going to be here for too long.” — Ora Grodsky [0:19:26] “I believe in working with people at all levels of an organization, but I do believe, as the crass saying goes, a fish rots from the head.” — Ora Grodsky [0:24:19] “Urgency is really often something that comes with an attitude of dominance and subjugation, which I think is the root of white supremacy – the idea that some people deserve to ‘have’ and deserve resources and deserve to be human, and some people don't.” — Ora Grodsky [0:28:36] “That dominance and subjugation ideology [at] the root of white supremacy is [often] what drives urgency: ‘We need to be better. We need to accumulate more. We need to do better, faster.’ There's so much pressure – for everyone, that letting go of that urgency is really hard.” — Ora Grodsky [0:28:55] Watch our Finding Brave episodes on YouTube! That is not what sensitive means – Being sensitive means that you take in more information from the environment around you and you do more with it.” – Andre Sólo [0:19:05] “People are a little bit more intuitive than they may even realize. 298: Using a “Flux” Mindset To Better Navigate The Future, with April Rinne
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! Please note: This is an updated “Holiday Selection” re-release of Episode #193. “If the pace of change is ever faster, ever faster, ever faster, and we already feel like we don’t have enough time to keep up or we are overwhelmed or we’re not able to show up fully, then we need a big reset because the future does not play out well if we continue to buy into not just what society says, but also what this pace of change is doing.” – April Rinne With the amount of change happening daily in workplaces around the globe, adopting the right mindset can be key for employees, managers and leaders alike. Today’s deeply inspiring Finding Brave guest breaks down the concept of having a “Flux Mindset,” which helps individuals and organizations consistently view change as an opportunity, not a threat, by being clear and grounded in their values. Ranked one of the world’s “” by Forbes, is a change navigator: she helps individuals and organizations rethink and reshape their relationship with change, uncertainty, and a world in flux. A World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, she is a trusted advisor to organizations ranging from Airbnb, Nike, Intuit, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, NESTA, Trōv, AnyRoad, and Unsettled, as well as governments spanning Singapore to South Africa, Canada to Colombia, Italy to India. April is the author of the inspiring book . A graduate of Harvard Law School, April is a futurist, advisor, global development executive, microfinance lawyer, investor, mental health advocate, certified yoga teacher, globetrotter (100+ countries), and insatiable handstander. She also harnesses very personal experiences with flux, including the death of both of her parents in a car accident when she was 20. Through her travels and tragedy, vision and values, global perspective and grounded sense of purpose, April helps others better understand how we see, think about, struggle with, and ultimately forge positive relationships with change. 297: How To Begin Doing Something That Matters
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! Please note: This is an updated “Holiday Selection” re-release of Episode #210. “Sit with the idea of what it would mean for you to take on a worthy goal, become the best version of yourself, and unlock your greatness by taking on the hard things. I’m asking not just for you, but I’m asking for me and my world, because it’s a chance for all of us to live a better life.” – Michael Bungay Stanier I’m very excited to share my “Holiday Selection” re-release of one of our most popular episodes, featuring the great insights of Michael Bungay Stanier. As an exciting new year is coming, with its fresh energy of possibility, what would it mean for you to find and set a worthy goal, something that is thrilling, important, and daunting at the same time? Today’s special Finding Brave guest reveals the 3 key components of a worthy goal, what it really means to commit to one, and why we don’t have to travel this path alone, because we can ask for support along the way. helps people be a force for change. He’s best known for his book , which has over a million copies and has thousands of 5-star reviews online. His latest book, , helps people find the clarity and courage to take on a Worthy Goal and start something thrilling, important and daunting. He founded , a learning and development company that helps organizations move from advice-driven to curiosity-led. They’ve trained hundreds of thousands of managers to be more coach-like and their clients range from Microsoft to Gucci. Michael left Australia about 30 years ago to be a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, where he shares that his only significant achievement was falling in love with a Canadian. Michael now lives in Toronto, having spent time in London and Boston. Balancing out these moments of success, he was banned from his high school graduation for “the balloon incident,” was sued by one of his Law School professors for defamation, and his first published piece of writing was a Harlequin Romance-esque story involving a misdelivered letter called The Male Delivery. I encourage you to read Michael’s latest (and very enlightening) book and let us know what lessons you glean from it. How has your energy been shifted, and what did you learn? Please feel free to reach out to Michael or me with your feedback and questions about what we discuss in this episode. Here’s to your joyful pursuit of your worthy goal! Highlights from this Episode: The worthy goal that Michael has for his latest book [5:44] Why he is expecting a big shake-up for the coaching industry in the very near future [7:07] What Michael means when he says that we unlock our greatness by taking on the hard things [13:52] How his childhood influences have contributed to the way that he now sees the world [17:36] Some of the ways that Michael “zags” when others “zig” [20:03] His approach to coaching and helping others do the thing that really matters to them [21:33] Where true growth will happen, plus the 3 components that make a worthy goal [23:45] What you can expect to gain by reading Michael’s latest book [25:44] A powerful exercise that shows the importance of getting support from others while pursuing your goals [26:33] A reminder of why we always need to celebrate our victories, no matter how big or small they may be [32:01] For More Information: Michael’s Latest Book, [With Bonuses] His & Michael’s Free Course, by Jacqueline Novogratz Kathy’s Resources Mentioned: STAY TUNED – ‘KATHY AI” IS COMING SOON! Can you rush to action and give advice a little more slowly? [6:10] “Part of why people would hire you if you’re a coach is because you’ve seen stuff, done stuff, and know stuff. It’s kind of rude not to share what you think could be of best service to that client.” [8:11] “I want people to be ambitious for themselves and for the world. I want them to be the best version of themselves, but I also want them to contribute to a better world.” [14:07] “I’m wired in a way that I’ve always been self-confident, and I’ve always had a willingness to zag when other people zag.” [19:58] “I’m just trying to get people started. I can’t take them to the end of the journey, because the journey will evolve and change, but can I get them across the threshold in taking the first steps.” [28:08] “Ask yourself what minimum success looks like, but you’re also allowed to dream about what big success looks like as well.” [31:28] Watch video versions of my interviews on Finding Brave! 295: The 5 Biggest Blunders Career Changers Make
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! Please note: This is an updated re-release of Episode #197. “What you want to understand is that before you leap you need to take action to address what is making you so miserable. If you don’t do that, you are going to wake up two years later in the new career and you’re going to be having the same problems.” – Kathy Caprino I’m very excited to share this solo episode which is my “Editor’s Choice” for this week - one of the most downloaded episodes over the six years of producing this podcast. Today’s show shares important content and advice for professionals from all levels and industries who are ready to make an important career shift but want guidance on how to do it successfully, reducing risk and wasted time. In this episode, I share what I’ve seen are the 5 biggest blunders career changers make, and I have to admit that I have made each one of these mistakes myself, which is why I can speak to how easily they can happen if we’re not aware of them and or we’re not making the right decisions and choices. These blunders are costly, painful and take a tremendous toll on your self-esteem, confidence, and your hopes and visions for the future. And they can hurt your finances, personal relationships, mental and physical health and more. But there is a way to avoid these career change mistakes, and it starts with remembering that you are an amazing individual with many important gifts, talents and capabilities to share and gaining clarity on exactly what those are. The question is how to get on the path to leveraging these talents and abilities in new ways that authentically fit with who you really are, and what you want for your life, and for your family and your livelihood. Listen in for a full look at how to avoid the 5 biggest career change blunders and stay to the end as I reveal the 5 essential steps to take when you want change of any kind, in your career and in any area of your life. As always, thank you for listening, and please let me know if the information I share today helps you navigate these particularly challenging and ever-changing times we find ourselves in right now. Highlights from this Episode: What is “The Pendulum Effect” that creates havoc in our careers, and examples of the ways that I and others have suffered from it [4:20] Why I believe that this is such a common mistake people make, and what to understand before you decide to make a career change [7:50] Why it’s essential to have sound financial transition plan in place before you pivot or change careers [10:50] How having a firm understanding of (and physically “trying on”) the actual work and tasks you’ll be engaged in in the new career will benefit you in the long run [12:30] Why doing functional tasks and work you enjoy is not enough to bring you career happiness and success if you can’t support the strategies, tactics and values of your company and work culture [15:10] Examples of times that I didn’t “dig deep enough” to understand what I really wanted and needed in my own career, and why I want you to avoid this costly blunder [16:46] How the trap of believing that success will be instant and automatic for you will be detrimental to you and your career journey [22:47] A powerful 5-step process to engage in if you wish to make any type of significant change in your career (and life) [27:27] For More Information: and https://kathycaprino.com/career-help Resources Mentioned: AND COMING SOON! Will it make you the money you want, and will this full-time professional directly be what you want, or would it serve better as a hobby?” [20:21] “What I see is that people are often not putting in the work. They’re giving up too quickly. You’re not going to have the success that you want if you just throw in the towel when it gets hard.” [24:04] “Plan for a commitment to making a change, and don’t underestimate that it will take time, money, and energy.” [27:06] “Get that empowered perspective before you try to move forward because if you’re coming from a place of disempowerment, the whole process isn’t going to go well.” [29:16] Watch video versions of my interviews on Finding Brave! The gap between where we are, who we are, and our ability to live up to that ideal [is] the deficiency that creates the Success Wound.” — Brooke Taylor [0:10:00] “We all logically know that our salary isn’t our worth and our job title won’t make us happy, but there’s still something inside of us that is trying to live up to the ‘success ideal’.” — Brooke Taylor [0:13:44] “How we try to live up to [our] success ideal, we all have different strategies for that. We all have different ways that we attempt to work when we’re working from our wounding.” — Brooke Taylor [0:15:15] “I don’t know what the answer is. I wish I did, but it starts with deconditioning, deprogramming, and unlearning cultural myths about success within us first so we don’t pass them on.” — Brooke Taylor [0:27:20] “Once we [understand] what our Success Wound looks like and how it operates within our lives, we then want to say, ‘Okay. How do I go about healing this?’ It requires a shift in how we be, how we work, and how we think.” — Brooke Taylor [0:30:03] “The essential question [to ask yourself] is: am I working from my wounding or – from my wholeness? Am I working from strategies I’m using to try to protect myself and live up to this unachievable ideal or – from a space of collaboration, creativity, and confidence?” — Brooke Taylor [0:32:24] Watch our Finding Brave episodes on YouTube! 282: Power Gap #7: Allowing Past Pain and Challenge To Continue to Shape You
(Part of Kathy’s series The Most Powerful You)
Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Podcasts in Careers! Please note: This is a special rerun of Episode 130. “You are not your past. You are all of it, your past, present, and future. So do the work to release the shame, the humiliation, and the negative judgments you have about yourself. Release yourself.” – Kathy Caprino Over the past several years on Finding Brave, I’ve offered some key information about what I’ve observed are the along with key chapters from my latest book, . Some time back, I offered a series of 7 podcasts dedicated to these gaps that negatively impact 98% of professional women today, and 90% of men, preventing them from reaching their highest potential, and their happiest, most rewarding success and fulfillment. In this 7th installment of that series, I share the power gap that may be closest to my own heart and soul. I’m talking about how we unwittingly allow past trauma, pain and challenges that we’ve experienced to continue to shape and define us. And this unwanted pain and shame often brings to our lives unwanted experiences. I have lived this in such a deep way (and continue to work on it - as you’ll hear in my upcoming interview, Episode #286 with - who helped me right on the show uncover a very painful trauma memory from when I was a teen, and connect that to some mindset (and behavioral) challenges I still have around money, work and safety. I never fully recognized this Power Gap (of how our past continues to shape and define us unless we gain fuller awareness of the trauma and pain events/experiences and work committedly to overcome and release them) until I became a therapist and started doing the work on myself and with others to help us heal. Unfortunately, life can hurt us badly sometimes and leave deep scars, and no one is immune. Every single one of us has experienced some form of pain, suffering, sadness, isolation, rejection, and trauma in our lifetimes. Many have experienced and witnessed things that alter how they see the world and operate within it. Sometimes, pain and hardship make us close down and stop trusting others. Other times, it makes us turn our pain into rage and violence against the world. Yet some people, while crushed by their pain for a time, are able to find a way to become more of who they really are at their core – more loving, compassionate, hopeful, helpful, generous, insightful, brave, committed, and resilient and joy-filled — through all of it. And some are fortunate to know exactly how to turn their emotional challenges into new ways to be of service in the world so they can uplift others while expanding themselves. I sincerely hope that my “The Most Powerful You” series (for content on the other 6 gaps, check out Episodes #124 through #129) is enlightening, and in conjunction with and , can help you uncover any power and confidence gaps that may be holding you back at this very moment. As always, thank you for listening and I would be so happy to hear your feedback on not just this episode, but the entire series and The Most Powerful You book. Remember that tremendous success, joy, and reward aren’t just reserved for a handful of people, but everyone, including you. You are worthy of an amazing life and career, and it’s waiting for you. If you’d like to know which, if any, of the Power Gaps you may be facing today, take my quick . Highlights from this Episode: How trauma appears in our lives, and why it’s so damaging to hold onto [4:10] What trauma really is, and how every single one of us has experienced it [4:45] How becoming aware of your trauma will benefit all aspects of your life including your career [6:50] A powerful example of someone who has transformed her trauma into growth and a life of service to others [8:40] The impact and harm your childhood can continue to have in your life as you get older [17:00] Why insight into our trauma alone isn’t enough to overcome it and what is needed to move forward to healing [18:02] Examples of common workplace trauma that I often see in the people that I work with [18:20] What steps you can take to start getting on what I call “the brave healing path” [20:55] The specific questions to ask yourself as you embark on your own journey to awareness [33:30] For More Information: READY FOR A BIG CHANGE – AND HUGE BOOST – IN WHAT’S POSSIBLE FOR YOU – IN A REWARDING AND THRILLING CAREER YOU LOVE?
